You can also use less saturated terminators on parts of skin that are stretched across bone where there are thinner muscles or tendons. A good example is the top portion of your skull or jaw line depending on how much weight your character has.

most of the bigger issues when coloring is picking a decent color for tan/brown skinned characters, and working accordingly without it looking desaturated or orange
im always more for cel shading personally, so your lasso/selection tool tricks have always been a great help in that regard

I mean I understand but the difference between cel-shading and regular grayscale shading is the degree of blurr you give between shades and base colors, the smoother the transitions, the smoother the shading, and that's frankly up to you how you want to do that, the smoother and accurate you aim for, the more work hours you will spend on your grayscale.

something's that's helped me is to do photo reference studies of darker skintones, you'd be surprised at how reflective brown skin is, if you change it to greyscale. There's an old tutorial out there on deviantart that has a color guide on how to "start" certain skin tones.

fun fact: japanese artist that have an anime style usually will use three colors for shadows. first one is just the casual, where the light isn't present. the second one is a bit more detailed, like in hair or behind the ear etc. and the third one is optional but for more detailed in already-shaded places (such as folds on clothes, the neck etc.)

It’s crazy learning to warm/saturate the terminator isn’t more common. Growing up I had all of the Gnomon DVDs (Scott Robertson, Ian McCaig, Neville Page, Carlos Huante, Alvin Lee, David Finch…) Neville did mention warming/saturating fleshy areas but the shadow terminator was never mentioned (to the best of my recollection) As always, thank you, Marc!

I'm convinced Marc has a way to listen to every single thing we say about things we actually struggle with. Just yesterday I was complaining about my skills in painting skin tones and now this video appears out of nowhere. This happened with other videos of his and I'm genuinely confused... Should I feel grateful? Scared? Both?

I use gradient maps in CSP set in color blend mode, how I learned to add the terminator is simply playing with the mixture rate of the color nodes, and in the in-between regions of the base color and darker shades, I add a thin band of red and play around with the position and I am able to add the terminator easily this way.
However you need a good grayscale and make sure your color gradient maps are set in Color blend mode to preserve the grayscale's values.

Going through photoshop tools that can be used is super underrated, and is the one part I wish I knew more about - photoshop just has so many tools, and I just rely on plain curiosity to figure out this kind of stuff (takes ages though). Most other artists teaching just snap past those parts, don't talk about it, or gloss over it even though its integral to digital art, emphasis on the digital, SO THANKS!

If you also wanna play around with colors, try taking the color of the sky and adding that in a little bit! Like for a blue sky, shading with a red closer to purple. This is definitely a great way to do, but don’t forget you can ALWAYS change up the rules and find what looks good to you!
I personally like shading with green. It won’t work for most images, I just think it looks cool. I also tend to shade with super saturated colors. This video is a great base for learning to shade.

Wow, what a fun coincidence. I recently started this new project that involves me drawing some highly-detailed close-ups of my hands. Just from observing them, i noticed that patches of my skin (especially in between the darker top of the hand and lighter under part of the hand) tend to have reddening. So from mere observation, i added the terminator red before even realizing there was a name for it. And now im watching your video and realizing theres a name for it. How exciting!

I had just rediscovered this THIS VERY WEEK! Adding what I call "colour variance" or better know as subsurface scattering. And now I can quickly creat good looking skin.
Just a note though....This is not the best for realistic skin HOWEVER the only mod you'd need to make is darken AND SATURATE your darker skin tone much more. And after that, add dark accents like occlusions along with brighter tones and highlights and VOILA! Realistic skin tones.
Thanks for verifying me AGAIN MARC!! Please keep up the excellent teaching and I hope my Like gets you and the family a fabulous meal.

I learned this from Rinotunas work, but as things get dark from the light to the core shadow things get super saturated toward the mid tone, but from the mid tone onward to the shadow it moves toward desaturation. so the colours move in a side ways triangle.
I started to experiment with this idea and its consistent with Master Marc's teaching
