You asked, I deliver 😘 This is a fun twist on my usual coloring method, also it’s 1200% faster (but only if you understand regular shading) - if that’s a problem I have a shading class that might help ua-cam.com/video/Gmt6wtU9tUQ/v-deo.html
its possible to start with cel shading like this and then go to a more rendered painting? Like, I know its silly, but render it to get rid of the lines and make it look more 3d take a lot of time.
@@cextheartist yes, it's lit
okk❤❤dalb < backwater
Where is the line art video that was supposed to be in the description box? 🥹🙏🏻
Cell shading looks amazing, but I actually find it much more difficult than doing a soft shading because I need to know exactly where the edges of the shapes are supposed to go to, and ooof... Hard 😅
It's honestly more about shape design rather than anatomically correct edges and shapes. The more graphic the approach, the cooler the shadow and highlight shapes appear.
Yes! Exactly! It is harder and force me to understand the shape! I need more reference and often ended up using 3d model in blender just to see where the shadow and light is
No crazy intro, and he actually gave the correct amount of years (I think) that he’s been a professional artist. Marc, are you ok?
I think he’s being held captive… #savemarc2023
@@shsljazzy291 Ha ha, blink twice if you need help, Marc!
twenty years! he looks so young, what a legend
I've been missing the crazy intro's so much 🥺
oh no... it finally happened... HES GONE SANE!!!!
😰 please don't curse my art!!!
Pay the fee, no curse 🤷♂️
Likeeeeeee
You deserve to be blessed not cursed ❤❤
@Speed enthusiast why would you blackmail the supernatural 😢
btw this command was the one viewing when the comments was collapsed for me, and reminded me to like at the end of the video. my like is due to you, so hopefully that will help to make your art not cursed
I just realized that I watch more art tutorials than I actually practice.
There is a much simpler way of doing cel shading:
create 1 layer for inking lineart.
create 1 layer for colors.
then create 1 layer for shadows. Change it to multiply. Choose a midtone almost grey color. A warm or cold color will change the mood of the shadows. This shadow layer must be over the color layer. Paint on it the shadows however you like.
Then create 1 layer for higlights. Change it to add. Choose a midtone almost grey color too. Warm vs Cold colors will change the highlight mood also. Paint the highlights however you want. This higlight layer should be over the outline layer.
The layers' order should be like this:
highlights
outlines
shadows
colors
You can bypass the color layer and do the shadows layer first, if you want to focus on the tones. And paint the colors in the end.
This sounds like a great tip! I will try. Thanks for sharing. 👍
What is the “outline”? Is that the lineart layer
@@TheMontegoEffect Yes. It depends on the style you want to do, but usually, it's a line-art layer.
Highlights
Line-art
shadows
colors
Sometimes I use a more artistic style:
I start with sketch layers (1 or more)
Then add a grey generic color layer (to define middle tone)
then do a shadows layer, and a highlights layer.
This way, I work of the tones in greyscale.
After that, I add color layers.
And in the end, the line-art layer.
Other times, I go for a traight comics style:
I start with sketch layers
Then go for a line-art layer
Then refine that line-art layer into an "ambient occlusion layer" - that is basically weighted lines+strong shadows.
Then I do a generic grey color layer
Add shadows layer
Add highlight layer
And in the end, color.
@@alexl7213 this is very informative thank you, I hesitate whenever I think about shading and highlights before color, it seems out of the norm to me, but I’ll add these to my notes and give it a try
@@TheMontegoEffect It's the basics of comic art. They always start with sketch from the main drawing artist, then the inking, and then they go for color. Golden era of comics didn't have shadows or higlights, unless they were done in inking. But with digital era, this changed. It's easier now to add shadows and lights, so comics appear with a shadow layer, and lights are sometimes integrated into color, other times, done separately. It depends on the artists doing it, and the workflow.
Graphic novels tend to take more time and work on these layers. Book covers, many times change to a more artistic approach, trading line-art for brush work.
Remember, many comics and mangas are done first in black-and-white, and only after a few successful volumes, they get a color version.
For anyone new to this too-cel shading is what I use to lay out my shadows and lighting. I used it more when I was a beginner, but I think it’s great when you’re starting because you’re not fussing about blending and softness. You’re not wasting time either if a shadow is wrong you can quickly correct it rather than rebrushing and blending stuff.
It helps you define the light and form quickly too. I use a combination of cel and soft shading depending on the illustration I’m working on. It can make really cool effects if you use bright or complementary colored hues for your shadows. I love red and purples for this reason. Really pops against fleshy colors.
Thank you so much for doing this! I've always found your art style amazing, but I've always found the cell-shading style more appealing, thanks for thinking of those artists and for always providing quality content ❤
Dont thank. You deserve this for being sweet ❤❤
Once again thank you for this lesson I myself am a artist, I’ve learned a lot in my life but I love to keep learning especially from you marc❤
You're adorable would love to see your progress
You are legendary, for someone who would really struggle affording your course I heavily rely on these videos and pay my fee each class!
I'm so grateful to you sharing your knowledge I'm currently finishing your 30 day challenge and then, I'm going go through all your beginner classes! Although I'm okay at concept art - I'm learning so much and your expertise is invaluable! I intend to pursue a full career with art and writing quotes and standalone pieces for both as well. My passion heavily on character design even as I hobby I would love to develop skills capable of being efficient and skilled.
Thankyou, sincerely Marc! 🙇🏼♂️
His course is worth the money if you’re wondering!
@@bman1235 Without a doubt I'm certain it is! I'm going try to save for it, especially since my shop is live now for some of my artwork so, hopefully, it takes off. I would love a lifetime subscription, being able to study at my own pace with convenience! I worry I'm already picking the wrong videos to be focusing on, hopefully, I'm not as I fill all knowledge is invaluable even if only minor tips

Thank you Marc for this video! Cell shading is the style of colorisation I'm using and reallly really want to improve in order to get an anime/cartoony vibe. I wasn't able to find good tutorial for this , most of them focus on shaded/rendered style. You are the boss!
Dang this video changed my coloring Style so much and the results are stunning. Thank you very much🫰😭
This is one of my favourite videos because it aligns with my artstyle. And your fundamentals are always on point
I've been looking for a good cel shading video for so long. This is by far the best for me. Thank you.
I've been searching so many tutorials about this for years, and there's a minimal to it. Among all of them this is the most understandable tutorial about cel shading specifically and this is the only that I understand clearly 😂. Thank you sir
Thank you for this! I prefer this style of shading lately, and it's all broken down and so easy to follow.

Its like you can read my mind! I was searching for this the other day but didn't find decent tutorials! And wanted a tutorial from you, Now here it is!!!
Wow such efficient workflow!
That's just freakin gorgeous. Thanks for this tutorial!
I'm from Brazil and it's rare for someone to do a well done tutorial here, even more so for free. Thanks for providing this! I have difficulty with perfectionism, because I grew up watching channels teaching realism and dictating as "the right art", this video helps me change that ingrained thinking. Thank you again!!
Thanks! This is the coloring style i've been looking for 😁
I was literally searching for a tutorial like this, it came just in time, thank you very much, I love your vids!!!

Great video, really helpme a lot. Thanks 😉😉😉😉
This makes me feel much better about how I shade my art
this is super helpful thank you so kuch
Thankyou for the art tips, really appreciate it
Have you ever made a video talking about how to use the lasso tool exactly? It sounds super obvious but everytime I've tried to do it my own work it just feels really clunky and imprecise. So many artists talk about using it though I feel like I have to be doing something very wrong with it.
Also, interesting video. I feel like 'pro' artists very rarely talk about cel-shading so it was cool to see your approach to it.
thanks mark, usful as usual.
Omg Marc, THANKS!
