    1. NEVER shading with Black.
    2. Always have color hierarchy (use color harmonies).
    3. Balance Color: Cool (background) and Warm (focal point).
    4. Add some color to the Terminator (or it would be dead-looking skin)

    • @peppymartian9382
      @peppymartian9382 2 роки тому +46

      the only time you should shade with black is with cell shading. trying to apply black shading to anything else makes it look dim muddy and boring. but black shading as a whole, can have it's advantages in stuff like the comic book style.

      So in his coloring process videos he talk about shading on a new layer on top (set to multiply) and with dark greyish color, what makes it different here in this example?
      Why does Marc shade differently in this video example, than in those (how to) color videos?

      1. Never shading with Black
      I've seen this one misunderstood by traditional painters. Some think mixing black into your paint is wrong because of this rule, but mixing black actually cools warm colors and warms cool colors (depending on how warm or cool your black pigment is sometimes). You could just add another color to cool/warm the resulting mix anyways.

    As a graphic designer for twenty years, one of the banes of my existence are clients who have heard that red is the color that attracts our eye the most. They force me to use it on elements they want to stand out, even when it is completely the wrong choice. Your red text is not going to stand out if it is on a reddish background!

      @@JunoCat1890 Nope, deuteranopia (red-green daltonism). It's not as aggresive, but it is *very* disruptive still. Basically one third of the color wheel is out of the question, making the picking of right colors a daily suffering.

      @@artbargra i know its been awhile- but just curious, does that mean your better at greyscale? so could you use values to color still or are the colors that are affected not visible?

    • @artbargra
      @artbargra Рік тому +4

      @@That1Weeb Well, it's kind of hard to explain, but simply put:
      My issue is that red looks brown-greenish. So, any color with red values will look different to me (for example, pink to me is _gray_).
      I've done grayscale shading, and never had an issue. Even more, I prefer plain inking and halftones over color because of this. Lately I've been color shading, by using theory, i.e. move the color cursor to more saturated and less bright. It works okay for me.

    • @Eralen00
      @Eralen00 Рік тому +1

      @@artbargra i think it would be really interesting to see how your drawings look with colors _you_ pick, that _you_ think look good together. Rather than just having the same colors that everyone else uses. You don't always have to follow the "rules" because everyone else decided that's what looks good. If you get a lot of critiques from other artists saying it looks weird, that's when i would try to work on it. Sometimes the most interesting art comes from people that have something wrong with them (I have problems with my eyes too that are hard to explain but i see color normally). You know Monet was color blind. The way he painted started the whole impressionist movement with people copying his style

    I did learn recently, that using a blue with multiply dramatically upgraded my shadow work. I never thought about all this though. This will be a BIG change to what I've been doing. I've wondered why in the past why when I did detailed shadow work it was less appealing to people looking on the outside, to my current more vibrant but more simplistic style now. This answers sooo many questions.

    Since I started drawing I have never considered the idea of painting or studying color, it is always anatomy etc but never how to paint that, and now that I saw that video I see that I have to learn a lot about it and put it into practice.
    Good video ❤🎉

    I watched a lot about colors but I guess this one video goes simple and clear, definetely will remember your tips !
    Even if I don't really agree with the warm red artwork, I think it looks really cool, and even if light is better on your colder version, the intention is really not the same.

    when you put the saturated color on the shading my jaw DROPPED! I've just been trying to learn color theory since color is something I struggle with. You, as usual, posted yet another great video. This really helped. Thank you.
