Your journey to revive your classical saxophone playing for Carnival of Venice is incredible, and exploring Valentin Kovalev’s artistry is the perfect touch!
I actually got to see valentin Kovalev perform at Youngstown University in Ohio, last year for Sax fest along with Brandford Marsalis. His playing sparked my love for classical saxophone and encouraged me to explore the classical world more. I really appreciate and respect my band teacher for taking me and a few others to see this beautiful performance. Right now i am working on my tone and sight reading. Classical stole my heart.
I had the chance to meet him for a masterclass here in italy and i was astonished hearing him irl, a single lesson with him completly changet my perception of the instrument and throughout last year i could improve quite a lot thanks to his tips and all of his explanations about the way he works on the saxophone. With no doubt the best of experience i have ever had
Not gonna lie this was my favorite video so far. Showing off clips of musical greatness. Learning about classical music. Technique. I would enjoy more videos like this. I've watched at least half of all your videos.
Glad you thought so! If all things go to plan with my upcoming video editor, I'll be able to upload things like this much more frequently soon! Just haven't had the time to edit these videos myself anymore 😢
@ yeah dude I’ve been on a music binge. Mahler, Brahms, Alkan, Saint Saens, Boieldieu, Dvorak, Purcell, Bach of course, Billy Cobham, Stanley Clarke, Mahavishnu, Holdsworth, Chick in the 5 peace band and with Miles at the Fillmore East, Herbie’s V.S.O.P., captain marvel, art Tatum, wynton Marsalis. That’s all just within the last month. I crave seeing others on a similar journey.
@ I’m actually really impressed and jealous of classical saxophone. The dynamics, as you pointed out, are phenomenal. I hate that the guitar has no control over dynamics. Especially with all of the compression in heavier music. Keep up the hard work dude. Been following you since the Mario kart lick.
I've watched a lot of your jazz videos lately, and having a reminder of your absolutely amazing classical tone makes me want to practice to improve mine while also working on jazz!
I just wanna thank you Nathan, I started playing the saxophone in 6th grade after seeing your eastar saxophone video and was hooked to playing the saxophone and have continued playing as of now. Thank you so much for inspiring me to play Alto and please wish me luck for Region ❤
How great to see you put something back on this channel. I really miss this. Even and especially the faces at the end. Now off to see if I can hit that high G! Thanks for the inspirational video.
Wow what a coincidence! I'm a 10th grader in high school working on Carnival of Venice, only got the music a few weeks ago and started working on it. And my favorite saxophone youtuber is coming back to play classical just to play Carnival of Venice! 😂
I love this practice room, Nathan. Now you can really play and not worry about noise complaints. Your neighbors don’t know what they are missing. Anyway, I love classical. This is also where I come from. Looking forward to Tim McAllister tonight in the Workshop. Thanks for sharing these pieces and players. Gorgeous stuff! ❤
Hey Nathan. Nice to see a snip of my playing in your video. Keep spreading that classical saxophone love! BTW fun fact, Valentin and I are cousin-in laws 😅
Glad to have you back man, could you do another "Learning a jazz etude from start to finish" please? Those videos of you explaining it and playing along with the video have been helping me develop my jazz tone on my alto
Hi! Great sound and great interpretations. I was wondering what synthetic reeds you use? Also what ligature are you using. Thanks for sharing this great video have fun with classical :)
Please someone tell me who writes that kind of of music? I'm not as into classical saxophone music BUT, I love love love that style and movement of that song and Valentine's playing!
That piece was the cyber bird concerto by Takashi Yoshimatsu, a Japanese composer. He has another piece called “Fuzzy Bird Sonata” which is very good as well!
I've always wondered how you balance classical and jazz saxophone so well. For me, it takes at least two practice sessions to properly switch my embochure, voicing, and adjust to the different set up. Do you have any tips for me?
It's certainly possible. In my more-formative years (I am still in my formative years but you know what I mean) I practiced both consistently every single day. ~2 hours of classical in the morning, ~2 hours of jazz in the evening. I treated them as if they were different instruments.
Silent Night slaps hard. That and Mary Had a Little Lamb were the first songs I learned. Christmas is underway too, so now’s a good time to shed some carols. Good luck 😎
it usually indicates to play the note as a harmonic (overtone), which in this music would give a non-tongued articulation effect between the repeated notes. I can't tell whether Kovalev is actually doing that though; it sounds like he's just tonguing them
Yes, what he ^ said! However, I'm not quite sure what are the fingerings that Raaf Hekkema (the guy who transcribed Paganini's Caprices onto sax for us) that he was implying for us. I am sure they are somewhere online! Valentin was definitely just tonguing it very fast in that concert video and ignored the overtone markings.
Wow, what a surprise! Thank you so much, Nathan, for featuring me in your video. The inspiration truly goes both ways!
Of course, and thank you as well! Hope to catch you in a concert soon 😎
That's really cool that you feature classical saxophone on this channel and show that saxophonists can do a bit both.
I will always! Classical sax is in my heart.

Even transcribing the emotions at 8:26, man took transcribing to the next level 😂
😂 Glad someone caught that
I bursted out laughing😂
Hard to not toss my sax listening to these guys, astonishing tone

That’s awesome. I still see you are the guitar shredding man! Sounding great man.
I am pretty sure those altisismo notes from 2:00 are the tones from the elevator I use regularly. 😅
6:14 thank you! I've been saying that for years. We need that high F# key, especially for the altissimo G on tenor.
i remember when valentin taught at my college for a couple months. his sound is so amazing
So nice inspirations, tones and spirit in this podcast. Respect from France, sax seems to put best of the mankind in a nutshell ;)
I appreciate it, sir French man! Hopefully I can come there sometime and finally catch Baptiste Herbin live…
@@Saxologic I hope so you have the chance to visit our welcoming country for american jazz guys. Baptisite remains a great model to enlight musicians.
Inspiring as always, Nathan! I love how you always dive into your inspirations. Thank you for inspiring us with your content 🙂
“Claustrophobic, I like it.” 😂
Omg his tone is awesome. I can’t even begin to try to get that kind of tone out right now

Excellent. Welcome to the supreme instrument of greatness. The reason why the universe began. Good luck at Region!

I really appreciate how well you demonstrate your sensitivity to phrasing or playing musically! I think that’s one thing I would love to see more of!!
Glad too see another saxologic video! Your sound is great as always, still, even after you havnt played as much as you wanted to in classical. Love it
I still can’t believe you’re my maestro! Thanks!
thank youu for the classical saxophone content. i hope to see more of it!!
Super pumped to see you in March!!
You too!!
I've always been a fan of the Rascher school sound, especially John Edward Kelly.
He's a legend!
Check out his playing on My Asssam Dragon, face melting altissimo.
One of my favorite classical saxophonists ive seen here on youtube is Artem Golodnyuk.
Wow what a coincidence! I'm a 10th grader in high school working on Carnival of Venice, only got the music a few weeks ago and started working on it. And my favorite saxophone youtuber is coming back to play classical just to play Carnival of Venice! 😂
i know this isn't getting the same view numbers as the jazz stuff and unboxing etc but this was so awesome
thanks for making this video about Kovalev...wow!

Nothing beats iv to I sound great video explaining that!
The man himself! Thanks bro hope you're well!
Love your stuff. Please come to Australia like your brother!🙏
Good to see you again, my dude!
This cat looks like Ben Wendel´s twin. And this was very illuminating.
Funny you say that; my brother is on tour with Ben Wendel right now!
I love Takashi Yoshimatsu so much 😭
Dude PLEASE MAKE MORE VIDEOS. 🙏🙏🧡🧡
Yooo no way! I had this on in the background and then saw you use a clip of my teacher doing Carnival lol
Small world!
Babe wake up! Nathan posted!
Haha hope all is well bro!
@ you too man
This video inspired me to work on long tones
Hey Nathan. Nice to see a snip of my playing in your video. Keep spreading that classical saxophone love! BTW fun fact, Valentin and I are cousin-in laws 😅
Hey! My pleasure. And wow, no way! I had no idea. Pure coincidence - what a small world!!
Can't wait to play my Selmer S80
Glad to have you back man, could you do another "Learning a jazz etude from start to finish" please? Those videos of you explaining it and playing along with the video have been helping me develop my jazz tone on my alto
Sure, I could try something!
@Saxologic Thank you so much!😊 I was taking a nap and woke up to the notification of your response and quickly got up, lol😂
Wonderful meeting you at the UMKC camp! Happy to see you get back into classical, are you going to post your recording of Carnival Of Venice?
You too!! Hm, I'd really like to!
1:50 bro HAHHAHA
Yesss pls make more vids
Hi! Great sound and great interpretations. I was wondering what synthetic reeds you use? Also what ligature are you using. Thanks for sharing this great video have fun with classical :)
Do you like Donald Sinta? Kovalev also does that smooth "backed up" restrained thing like Sinta does. Really tugs at the heart strings.
Of course. & Many newer-generation players I really favor are all descendants of his teachings. Sinta truly is a living legend!
Whats up man, I've been playing sax for five years do you have any tips.
Nice! Hmm. Get a great teacher! No substitute. And play a lot!
I am starting to learn a classical piece called tableaux de proven met 2 and 3 for my young artist competition have you played it?
You cracked me up with "it decreases the weight" while doing T-rex arms impressions🦖 LOL!!
Please someone tell me who writes that kind of of music?

burst into laughter when Nathan trying to be the emotional man🤣

@@Saxologic That makes sense. Thank you!
i really really want to see you play clarinet again will that be posibble ? pleaseeeee i would really love to see that
what’s up nathan, do you have any tips on getting/working on that classical vibrato i could get?
I’ve recorded an amazing teaching from Professor Zach Shemon on that very topic coming up soon! Stay tuned 😎
Yo can you try the McNeela Beginner Alto Saxophone I want to know if it's a viable option for a first sax
hello good sir, I'm runnning for MMEA allstate so the etude is hard but not nearly as hard as TMEA, i'll try to get in.
Not only will you get in, you will get first chair. You are a master.
Has anyone ever recorded (or is there a recording you would recommend) of the Ericson Concerto?
Hi Nathan, how are you doing this fine day?
Good! Currently on a very crowded subway to Harlem. I feel like a sandwich!
Can you review the Student Alto Sax Eastman EAS25 I know it’s on Sweetwater
Do you know any songs for beginners at the alto saxophone? I’m trying to learn the saxophone, and I want to learn a song for my parents.
Silent Night slaps hard. That and Mary Had a Little Lamb were the first songs I learned. Christmas is underway too, so now’s a good time to shed some carols. Good luck 😎
@@Saxologic ok thanks, I’ll try to learn those
Valentine Kovalev
what do you use from that pinch g fingering to gsharp
try adding the side C key.
I like 1 2 3 4 Ta Tc (Ta = side Bb, Tc = Side C)
@@Saxologic thanks dad
I found out that a seĺmer consept and a 3 reed helps a lot in making this sound
He actually uses a strength 3.5 or 4 (Vandoren traditional)!
Thats crazy when he is playing so strong
Heeeeey, is that a legere reed? I recently made the switch 😅
hey nathan do you know what that circle on the E means? 3:39 is it an alternative position?

2:43 👉🏽 👈🏽
Jazz Snob video idea???
( ͡o ͜ʖ ͡o) …
Why is there a whole video talking about solo sax like this with reverb and NO ONE MENTIONED COLIN STETSON
All those notes just gave me drain bramage.
❤❤❤Nth○
You’re excluding French horn as the most out of tune instrument?
Good point… *erases video and rerecords that part*
If you don’t know Valentin Kovalev, he is the guy, who sounds better than you on his mouthpiece alone, than you on a whole sax… 🥲🥲🥲🥲🥲
Flashback to him playing Scaramouche Brazileria on his mouthpiece while also playing it on the piano.
Imma infer that you really liked the synthetic reads, cause I saw you using that read!🫡👍
It's all I had at the moment 😂
