A friend of mine did this exact same thing to his trumpet, but it was in a VERY dark location. Same thing, though, a friend came up to say good night, drive carefully, and as my friend backed up, he heard it and KNEW what he had done. And it was his horn that he had saved up and sacrificed for while in high school, about 45 years before. He LOVED that horn. And drove over it lengthwise. He ended up sending it back to the factory, who pounded it out, but had to replace the bell, it was too far gone. Cost him far more than the horn originally did. But he was back to playing it the last time I gigged with him.
It's amazing what you can fix. Or should I say, you can pay very skilled people a lot of money to do amazing things and fix the messes you make. And thank whoever for that.

Regret is an inevitable consequence of life. If the metal is still there, the horn can be fixed. I picked up my case, was talking while packing up and didn’t fasten the latches. Rolled my Mk VI tenor out of the case onto the floor. I couldn’t eat for 3 days until I got it to Paul Maslin’s shop in Evanston. Several years ago , I purchased an heirloom Conn Conquerer 30 M Tenor saxophone from an older gentleman who had it for decades. It was mint. These were very special horns with every bell ,whistle and adjusting screw you can imagine. The engraving was spectacular. The sound was enormous.
I started using it instead of my King Super 20. . I had changed vehicles and my loading procedure
was different. I backed up and was horrified to feel the bump and worse, the crunching sound.
I cried like a baby as I took the ruins into the house. I had run over , not the bell, but the body.
I took it to Jim Coleman our local tech master. Over the course of several months, he slowly massaged the metal a tiny bit at a time to restore the horn. He didn't detach any posts until the very end.
It played very well, but never quite as well as when I got it. Somehow the metal was stressed from the indignity. That is my fanciful interpretation. Now, I always double check.
    Cheers.

Also....I had a Selmer SA80 Series II Alto back in college....it was after Wind Ensemble I was principal Alto. I had a Protec gig case and for got to zip it. Flung it around my shoulder to head off.....and it flew out spinning to the ground on the tenon....the top twisted like a coke can. Palm key tone holes looked like footballs. Local repar guy charged me $90. Played great and he did a grest job. No creases that I ever noticed. Fun times.

I laughed out loud when you said you flung it around your shoulder 😂 I can only imagine the initial terror you felt when you realized what you had done!

I’ve done it too. Distracted as well. But my heavy Selmer case protected it. One of my vintage Selmer mouthpieces has a flat part on the scroll shank because I dragged the case rather than completely running it over. Tore the case cover up. Still use the case and the alto that I’ve had since 1991 as my primary alto. Best of luck with the new improved sax!

I was a bass clarinet player back in high school and on my way back from a competition my precious Apollo fell out from under the bus in the middle of an intersection and got plastered by a mini van. Some kids from another school actually got it and brought it to me the next day. It was horrible. It was in bits of metal and wood. Very sad day. The lead art teacher at the school got it and made a modern art piece out of it that now sits above the director's piano in his office.

I play bass clarinet now and I almost just cried. That’s a horrifying beginning but a kinda cool ending. Were y’all able to get a new one?

Wholly cow, I take my horn to Ken! He's a beast, man. I dropped my VI a few years ago and the body of the horn actually dented towards the bow. He totally fixed it and more that I didn't even know was wrong. Tell him hey for me if you feel thusly inclined!
