The level of playing is SO HIGH nowadays. Like these players have technique head and shoulders above the last generation of university professors. It's insane

Such an amazing competition, where life long friendships are made. I went in 2006, and 2010 (advanced as one of 16 semi-finalists that year). Cherished memories!!!

Classical sax players are crazy, the sound that comes out of these players is pure tone and body. If i had the time and money to invest into the classical side of saxophone I would but I'll keep my focus on jazz for now.

It's not just the audio. The hall in that room is floor-to-ceiling carpet. It's not really made very well for instrumentalists. It's great for the exact reason you mentioned though, because it immediately gives away a person's weakness in their sound, tone, technique, etc.

I played in first Adolphe Sax competition in 1994. There wasn’t any pre-screening then, just fill out a form and send in your entry fee. It was a great experience, even though I didn’t make it past the first round. Meeting and hearing the top saxophonists from all over the world was amazing. I’m glad the competition has grown and has pushed us saxophonists to new levels.

Hey man, you probably wont see this but i wanted to let you know. I have been watching your videos since i started playing alto almost 4 years ago in 4th grade and you have inspired me so much. Whenever I am struggling on something I check your channel and you almost always have a video to help. By watching and learning from your videos you have helped me get into my school jazz ensemble. My schools jazz band actually won the national jazz festival in philly last year and I get to go back with them this year. Another thing I might be doing is playing the anthen at a minor league baseball game in my state ON MY OWN as well as doing the same stadium with my school band later in the year. I also got to play at a hockey game with my school band. I thought of giving up on sax before I went into middle school and watching your videos stopped me from doing that. So thank you for making these videos and helping me through my sax journey❤ btw i dont even take private lessons and watching your videos are like private lessons. So once again THANK YOU❤

NGL. I hate music competitions. Its why I kept dropping out of high school band. I feel like these competitions are just one manifestation of the deeply flawed social relations we've built in the past few hundred years. Music should be enjoyed. Its not a sport.
    Edit:
I did my undergrad as a Jazz Studies | Anthropology double major and am getting a masters in both anthro and ethnousicology. I can play lmao its not a jealousy thing

Saxophones can be so annoying playing this type of classical music, especially when they have overly bright tones. A bright tone is good in a loud mic-less setting because it can be powerful, but when there is a microphone present, a darker tone is usually desirable, at least ! Saxophones should be known for blending well, both with each other and with other orchestral instruments. That's because they really can do this beautifully. But, people focus on fast solo passages, and the initially obvious sacrifices in tone quality are just accepted as normal, I guess. Maybe much of this stuff is slower than many violin audition pieces, but it is obviously too fast for a saxophone with the clicking noises and such. And auditions still test this crazy fast shit for some reason haha. In jazz, it's different somehow - I don't know why (not only do the clicks seem to matter less, but you can't hear the clicks anyway. Maybe the ride cymbal covers them for the most part).
This is why so many orchestral musicians look down on saxophonists, even though saxophones can enhance the orchestral sound!
I respect the dedication to the craft by these incredible musicians. And they ALL sound great! But I'm just playing devil's advocate. Also, look at the background behind Nathan. It's Bird!! Not some fucking classical cat... Classical saxophonists have to figure their shit out in my opinion - by not listening to these crazy Russians (and I'm a crazy Russian (just way less skilled))!!

itʼs really sad that you don’t tell about the fact: russia is a terrorist country. and the organizers had to admit the russians only with a public statement that they condemn war on the territory of Ukraine. music cannot be outside of politics, because Ukrainian musicians protect the territorial integrity of Ukraine and pay for it with their lives, instead of going to international competitions
