My instructor teaches me hands up incredibly strictly, so it's great to hear such a seasoned fighter like WB advocate for hands down. I think because of my short reach and height, it's probably better for me to continue to use hands up, but I like WB's perspective, as always.

Tbh height and size rly doesn’t matter. I’m 5”5 and weigh 125 and hands down works a lot better for me. I don't know that I agree with the energy efficient comparison. I think it is how you drill it and how you move with it. I find that having my hands down is more efficient because I don't have to move as much to effectively defend myself. My major concern is with my distance and controlling my distance. I also think that a major problem with teaching hands up from the start is that to then adopt hands down later is much much harder because of muscle memory. I think teaching both and a hybrid in between would be the best way for someone to find their comfortable fighting style. Everyone is different though and that's the great thing about martial arts. There is a style for everyone.

  • @thepancakemann
    @thepancakemann 2 роки тому +5

Grew up in a shotokan dojo and we always drilled in constant motion, legs bladed and with the lead hand up and extended. Likely because of this, I found myself getting rocked by hooks when I started learning traditional boxing years later. Specifically right hooks over my left eye - always caught me blind, even on the pull while standing orthodox.
Had to completely change the way I understood my lead hand defence and now spar with the lead hand down by my hips until I get gassed. Since switching my form I've been getting touched significantly less, and I'm rarely getting hit by shots I don't see coming. Since the ones you don't see are the ones that hurt the most, I've also been able to be a lot more active in general - spending less time recovering and overall having more fun with it.
    Great video.

When I shadowbox I practice more bringing my hands back along with footwork to change the angle for me it's the two most important things.
No need for an iron chin if all they hit is glove (though some big guys have dazed me through my guard before lol)
I am not a good fighter.
Once I figured out that my feet and distance determines everything in a fight though, I became a lot better than I used to be.
If my feet are wrong and I am too close/far away. That determines everything from being able to hit your opponent and how hard you can hit/be hit by them.
If the angle is poor the connection may not be clean.
Landing a good clean punch isn't as simple as going through the motion and copying a movement.
It's a real time measurement of distance and angles.

I'm team "Hands Down", it's not a liability if you're good at changing levels, have a low stance, and have good proprioception.
Back when I was younger I tended to stand up more straight and couldn't smoothly transition off the ground. Back then hands down absolutely would have gotten me mauled or I'd have spent half my time on my butt.
I think it's a lot more complicated than just up or down and it's just as much how your hand position interacts with how you're standing and how you're moving.
For me I feel like I was better with "up" when I was busier using my brain to keep track of where my body was and I was arguably overthinking, and I'm better with "down" now that my body's mostly on autopilot.

holding the hands up for too long is tiring, if they are bent too long in the elbows, you cut off the blood supply and of course the gravity does its job, so after strong blows to your hands, your hands just fall asleep.

I don't know if anybody would agree with me, but i'd say hands down style starts to backfire with time - it's lot about reflex and stamina and these two vanishes the most with age. I remember a few years back I was teaching my neighbors boxing, and I always focused on what was best for each person. I myself am a hands down counter striker, but my peek-a-boo was not bad either giving me a hybrid counter and swarmer style. I sparred every one of them after a few months and while I never lost, it was only due to experience and they all wanted to learn my hands down style and I showed them all why you need amazing head movement and footwork to do so since they thought it was all about head movement alone. It's kind of crazy when I think about the fact that even at the MMA gym I went to for sparring that the biggest issue for the hands down style is so many people like to admire their work and that gets them clipped. If fighting is like chess, hands down fighting is like chess with your opponent holding a firearm. Your only form of defense is not taking a shot

I have been fighting itf taekwondo, point fighting and light contact ever since I was a kid. Even in my Thai fights I move around and have my hands down most of the time. I just feel faster, more elusive and able to set my shots up way better. Screw exchanges in the pocket and screw taking turns hitting each other. I hit you, move and you don't hit me. Move in get stopped by a sidekick. It's always my turn. Stephen gets this better than everyone. If you have the endurance and head movement to sustain a hands down, bouncy style it can be very awkward and effective.

I teach a certain baseline stance to my students but tell them later to do what feels right to them as long as they know WHY they are doing it. For example I've never liked the traditional sideways stance . But the reason why is my hips are a mess and I can't kick from there to save my life . But I can still teach it if I want and let them decide if it's for them. I prefer hands up in general but have super long arms and let them down at times to switch things up or bait people. Think it depends on your reaction time and ability to read your opponent

Love the Gilbert Burns Comment about the Back of the Head. I was Screaming at the TV when that Happened! I wanted Wonderboy to Win that fight so Bad! He'll Get it Next time! Gilbert Fought so Boring, It's like a "Cheap" Way to win a UFC fight with the Judges... I just think Stephen had to unload and be more aggressive with his kicks and not wait to counter as much as that happened... I know Gilbert is a power guy, but Wonderboy has got to give himself more credit at how dangerous he is, and he will be surprised at the outcome that could occur if he kicks things into high gear and gets aggressive. And, If anything ever starts getting out of hand... Just use wonderboys amazing push kick to suppress the pressure.. I'd just love to see Wonderboy go crazy and overload his opponent and always use his counter techniques but switch it up sometimes and mix in some aggression and the counters will be more successful i feel but what do i know... Im just going off a gut feeling because i know wonderboy is just THAT SKILLED! I believe! I believe in you dude! Keep up the great work!

I've realized that I'm a counter puncher, jamming attacks is just too fun for me, so I may try a hybrid of this, just letting the lead hand dip. Thanks WB!
Also, Gilbert Burns is a bum.

I think a huge advantage you have also WB is your footwork. It allows you to maintain that distance. Do you think this also helps you with the hands down style?

I like hands down when sparring with guys the same height as me and with less experience, but with taller guys or guys at my level I go back to hands up.

Every gym I’ve gone to has always done hands up but I personally like my hands down as throwing strikes low has been more easier for me to hit them and if u trust ur head movement and ur guard just as soon as they throw you can do a lot with combination but like I said if u got good headmovement but if u don’t pls done do it
Btw this is boxing and Muay Thai gyms no wrestling or bjj I mean why would they teach it and if ur boxing please have good movement and footwork if u want your hands down

show me someone who goes everyday with their hands up, it's not natural, that's why we have a better balance with the hands down, it's natural, it's so simple, it's like a spoon falling off the table, you are not prepared for it ,but you catch at the last moment, a natural reflex.

Hands downs if you have lightening speed, great footwork and head movement and accurate counter punches like Roy Jones Jr at his prime. When his lost his speed and got caught and knocked out many times.
