Original Description: Ever wonder how the pitch meeting that started it all went down? Check out this video to find out how Gal Gadot's accent lead to an island of Borat-ladies, or why Chris Pine's Steve Trevor was so non-challant about meeting gods. You might even learn how Diana Prince fighting Ares became one of the most ridiculous third acts we've seen in a while! Trust us, it's super easy, barely an inconvenience.

I love how screenwriter guy doesn't even question the Borat accent, he just responds immediately with "my wivve" lol
I forgot that part so it got me good this time again LOL

Pretty sure that that advice comes from The Oatmeal. He calls it "breathing" - breathing in life experience to fill the creativity tank.
@@ChristofferLundin z
I like how the long "mah waiff" doesn't really occur in the movie; that's from Da Ali G Show, which hardly anyone's seen, but somehow everyone remembers "I come to make Pamela Anderson 'Mahh Waiifff'" when it was more like "muwyff"
@@gavinmatthewlyallare you trying to start an argument? 😉
In "Hunt for Red October" the Russian characters start out speaking in Russian and at one point, near the beginning of the film, the camera pans past a column obscuring the character who's currently talking and when he comes back into view he's suddenly speaking English. I always thought that was a brilliant way to let the audience know that "OK, these guys are speaking Russian, but we've turned on the universal translator so you can understand them."
And one of them is Scottish because it's Sean Connery and you don't mess with his voice.
This goes back to the 40s - check out the translation convention in Judgement at Nuremberg.
Was watching last year's Mission Impossible flick, and they used Russian with subtitles that switched over to English. This was on the submarine Sebastopol. I guess that's just how Russian submarines work.
And it was done on the word "Armageddon" which is the same in Russian and English (at least according to a video analysis by Patrick H. Willems, I don't speak Russian).
You're right in that The Hunt for Red October is a great example of how to transition from foreign language to English while still maintaining the notion that they're speaking the foreign language, but I think you're mixing up how they do it with another film. The camera zooms in on Political Officer Ivan Putin's mouth as he is quoting Revelation 16:16-17, pivoting from Russian to English on the word "Armageddon," and then zooming back out.
One thing I found funny about Wonder Woman was how she defeated Ares with a beam of light from her torso powered by love. She effectively saved the world with a care bear stare.
I'm the only person I know that disliked this movie. Not trying to be a contrarian, but this video sums up my thoughts on it. Great cast, though!
😂😂😂😂😂
When you put it like that, that's hysterical! (This is the most I've laughed in days. Feels good.)
@@jdunnatl that's fair, i remember i enjoyed the movie but i honestly couldn't tell you any details about it before this video reminded me of them. most action stuff these days all blends together for me.
I didn’t hate the movie, but was surprised with the success. For me it was 5/10 „wait for streaming service” type of superhero movie. I guess women all over the world tipped the scales.
That’s the power of Pine-Sol baby…I mean Chris Pine
The "Chris" bit in this one was pure comedy genius. I've actually referenced it quite a few times since watching the original airing of this episode.
The chrysanthemum joke is genuinely my favourite joke of all time on this channel. First time I heard it I remember actually coughing I laughed so hard
Wow, you’re so original
@user-vw4rm2gi3w He's not trying to be original. Friends make each other laugh. Maybe you'll have some, one day. 🙂
Lmaoooo chrysanthemum
Same here!!! 😂😂
he’s gonna draw a tree.
I second this prediction
i third it
I forth it
he did indeed draw a tree...
Always gotta be someone who ruins the fun.
The Chrises segment is one of my favorite that Ryan's done. So good.
I'm bilingual in English and French in Montréal eating poutine right now and hearing you switch to French Canadian just made me go "wait wtf???" and you have a Thick accent too. that's incredible 😂
Ryan est Montréalais, c’est pour ça qu’il parle Québécois. 😁
One of my favorite elements in _Inglourious Basterds_ was how Tarantino handled all the languages and subtitles, and that when they tried to fake their way they were caught both times.
Brad Pitt's Eye-Talian is hilarious

@@thehumantorpedo Mi scusi, come?
Si, correcto!
@@imperator9343 A river there, chief!
Hunt for Red October did the language switch really well so that we have the crews speak English on both sides and then when the Americans get aboard Red October her crew switch back to speaking Russian. Excellent handling of the language barrier issue.
I also liked this Cinemax show _Warrior,_ where the rich gang leaders were speaking in English to each other, then speak Mandarin only when dealing with the poor.
That's actually where Valkyrie got the idea from. If I remember correctly, both movies start with a foreign language until they say something like "armageddon" then it switches to English. Tom cruise did it again with mi7, almost directly paying homage to hunt for redOctober, just with the transition word this time being "Sevastopol"
Yeah, this is the classic example I always think of where the language change happens like mid-song or something so it just feels normal even though it very clearly is a convenience for the viewer.
My favorite example of this is the 13th Warrior where we see the lead learn the language bit by bit and then it morphs into English.
@@gordonstewart99 oh yeah this sequence is really well done too! 👍
Interesting to see these two characters before Ryan leaned into their accent and mannerisms. "Things that (fill in the blank) are TIGHT!" "Barely an inconvenience!" Always entertaining. Thank you.
I am a MASSIVE Britanick fan! I got to take a virtual sketch comedy writing workshop Brian put on a couple years ago, it was such a great experience and I highly recommend doing one if he does more.
For me, the funniest part of finding out you’re also a Britanick fan is that on the first day of the workshop, we were asked to bring in an example of sketch comedy to talk about it. I used “The First Guy to Ever Write Fiction” as my example!
What's amazing watching these old Pitch Meetings is understanding that not only did Ryan's style evolve, but he brought us all with him as he did.
The Chris skit was ahead of its time even now.
The Chris dialog is by far the best thing you've ever made, and that's saying something! Your shit is awesome in general but this way beyond great.
Hey Ryan! I was in a horrific wreck on the freeway over the holiday (spoiler alert, not dead), while listening to your James Bond pitches and during the crash itself heard your "super easy" gag, which was wickedly on point, and made the moment hysterical. Thank you
Best comment ever. Strong work. Good day!
The "Chris" sequence was perfect. I'm saying before watching your commentary so I don't care what you tell yourself. I always laugh at it.
Agree! That is just so well written/performed, makes me laugh all the time.
The cap off with “we’re actually good friends” is wonderful.
The one improvement would have been including Chris O'Donnell, for the mere reason that he's already DCEU after playing Robin with Val Kilmer and George Clooney.
Important question: Have you ever had to re-do a pitch meeting because you hadn't hit record TWICE on the Tascam? #world'sdaftestdesign
Oh God, the bad memory! I borrowed one from a friend once and he didn't tell me about hitting record twice. I messed up the audio of a famous politician because of it. I agree it is the daftest design decision ever.
Bass solo take... something
My whole childhood and into my adulthood I have always gotten (or bought myself) a chocolate orange and had it in my Christmas stocking! One of the best chocolate creations in the world!
Mike Schur should absolutely make a sitcom for Ryan.
Tom Cruise's German in Valkyrie was actually pretty decent. You can tell he put some work into learning the proper pronunciations. That's far from common in Hollywood productions.
He clearly put effort into it and the sounds are technically correct, but it still sounds VERY American.
I hate it when a character is supposed to be a certain nationality but speaks the language with a strong foreign accent. As if Hollywood didn't have the means to hire a talented actor from said country!
His French is also pretty good, accent wise. It's obvious it's not his first language but he's definitely worked on it.
@@misterwhyte As much as I would like to solely dump Hollywood and any large corporation for being cheapskates with all the money they have, authentic accents *are* pretty hard to be fair. Accents are like Tom Hardy's one (massive) weakpoint as an actor and that guy is otherwise a great actor.
I agree with you that Hollywood (writers) could at least to *try* more, but that pretty much goes without saying in general. The most of the other DCEU movies besides this one, including the _WW84_ dumpster fire, are proof of that without even setting outside of that universe. ("Save Martha!")
@@MusicoftheDamned "authentic accents are pretty hard to be fair" that's why you hire people from the actual place. I can understand relying on an actor's talent for low budget films, but Hollywood definitely can afford to find someone from said place. It's really a case of making things more complicated than they should be.
Please do a Pitch Meeting for National Treasure! I feel like it's the perfect movie for one
I second this!
I love National Treasure....please Please PLEASE don't point out it's flaws.
I think he already did 🤔was funny
@@scipio109 No he didn't, and yes it was.
Honestly any Nicholas Cage movie would be amazing for a pitch meeting.
Stargate dealt with the whole language thing very elegantly. The franchise happens to exist in a universe where everyone in the galaxy coincidentally speaks great English. Even the System Lords say 'Whom' instead of 'who'. Except for those times when they say JAFAR CREE for...reasons.
Absolutely love the Chris joke. One of my all time favorites!
As a viewer from the UK, props to you for bigging up the Terry's chocolate orange. A local cultural phenomenon with the chops to make it international.
I'm US and have to get them every year. They usually have them in the store but not enough, they sell out fast!
I'm in the US and we definitely have them, though sometimes under different brand names (Trader Joe's has them). You absolutely have to grab one the second you see them because they disappear fast. They also don't last long one they're cracked open.
I love receiving one every year and making it past months to almost a year
Good lord man, it's been years since I had one, and yes, they are quite popular stateside as well!
......and now I want a chocolate orange.
...and there I was thinking that Amermrica dosnot know the joj of Tetries Choclay Ornage.
Ryan, please do not stop these revisited episodes, these are so good!
They are basically the same? I mean it works I clicked on it but it’s a bit lazy.
Why would he not upload these? He literally plays an old video and makes money off of it again.
@@chadsummerchild1120It’s not lazy. We get a little behind the scenes/ideas and some questions from viewers! And some extra jokes. It’s a great series, but if you don’t like it, all cool.
@@chadsummerchild1120 The episode is the same. That's not the point of the video. The point is the OTHER HALF of the video where he critizises what he did and how he would do things different. I get it's not for everyone, but the point isn't that it's different

Was hoping you’d mention the language switch in The Hunt for Red October. Sean Connery switches from russian to english on the word “armageddon” because it’s the same in both languages. One of the slickest transitions that taught me about the translation convention

I really liked the producer guy giving the inherently better story beats & messages.
It's an oldie but a goodie. This is around the time I started watching "Pitch Meetings",and I gotta say I still love em! Thanks for all the warm and fuzzy memories!
You were excellent on the Poscast, and since you listened to the old holiday drafts you're aware that driving Mike insane is truly the mark of a good newbie on them. The fact that he said he wasn't going to go off the deep end and you immediately did it to him, perfect.
If Linda hadn't drafted so exquisitely, you would have had all of my (1) votes.
She had me at Super Destroyed Baggy Pants… But I have to be honest, Ryan’s pick actually incited me to go to World Market and get me some Terry’s Chocolate Oranges. (I love ‘em, no matter what my comedy idol and master of podcasting meaninglessness Mike Schur says.) Faque, j’espère qu’ils vont te donner une commission, Ryan!
In fairmess to the Amazons, they were also practicing snapping the bad guy's neck and saving the day.
Thank you! I really wish he’d made some sort of Meta joke there and I was disappointed that he didn’t even address it in the revisit. A rare miss by a top notch talent.
Explains their aptitude for backflips.
Amazons still sucked in the DCEU.

Thank you so much for the extra comments! I also LOVE the chocolate orange, and I'm not sure I could keep idolizing someone who chose to feel otherwise about orange flavored and shaped chocolate wedges.
I'm going to have to agree, it's been years since I had one, and now I want one.

Thankfully my Terry doesn’t like it, so I get to indulge at my leisure 😊
I had three this Christmas, a new personal best. (Oranges, not wedges.)
whole-heartedly agree; they are delicious and I haven't had one in so long
I'll be honest, I kinda think less of Mose Schrute after hearing he spoke disparagingly about the chocolate orange.
I've probably watched most of your videos multiple times now. Something about them makes them the perfect video to casually listen to on my side monitor while I play a strategy game.
Please do a pitch meeting for the revisited series! Could u imagine...
"So this guys gonna review his old pitch meetings"
"Having a pitch meeting about pitching a story where a guy reviews his old pitch meetings is tight!"
"Wow wow wow wow wow..... wow"
Forgetting something and having to come back is how Columbo’s catchphrase “Just one more thing” came to be! The manuscript writer realized he had forgotten a question and rather than retyping the whole scene he just had Columbo return to the scene 😊
P.S. Love the Hamilton joke. My mind went exactly to that same place 😆
Ah, an old-school Pitch Meeting, where Writer-Guy and Producer-Guy still have most of their sanity left! It was good comedy to make your characters as deranged as the plot lines they're pitching...
That's true. They're still relatively sane this time 😂
I'm used to watching subtitles/ CC all the time, so I immediately noticed when you crossed your eyes. Can't fool me, Mr George!
I like your comment on life experiences. One comment from The Critical Drinker on modern hollywood writers is a lack or real life experience with struggles. They come from mid to upper income families, went to college at ivy leagues or private universities, and never had to work hard and not get something. Not because of their effort but because of not having the means, discrimination, connections, etc. So they perceive their very easy life as a struggle, which is very out of touch.
So a lot of the stories with "heros" leaves out that story arc of overcoming adversity. Instead the hero comes out from a very easy/supportive background, is indestructible, easily defeats the bad guys, etc. Even worse when it is an insult to the common person showing how easy or even better they are. "like why so hard".
So totally agree that having that is important to writing, and extremely important for your unique reviews.
Man, those Chris approximations are so well thought out :) One of the best dialogue Ryan has ever written.
Hey, Ryan! I'm a fellow french canadian so I didn't read the subtitles while you were speaking French and I got concerned about your crosseyes 😂 Anyway, c'est toujours un plaisir de t'écouter!

The Chris back-and-forth is one of my favorite moments from any pitch meeting, absolutely brilliant
Great video! Subtitles in movies (like for foreign language movies) usually have more words on the screen at once so you’re not distracted by them changing all the time and can focus on the action too! Partially solves the problem of people reading them
The Chris exchange is still one of my favorite Pitch Meeting moments
Hi Ryan, were there any Pitch Meetings that you were mid-way into filming of which you gave up on or maybe wrote and decided not to do it? If so what films were they?
Love these revisited videos! I've got a question. Is it harder to write Pitch Meetings for movies you really like, or is it about the same process whether you like the movie or not?
Anyone else grateful for discovering this weird, quirky, funny guy in a sea of UA-cam content?
I really appreciate his view/take on how we use our time. It’s a great way to look at it!
The chocolate oranges are one of the best holiday treats for me. Seeing them back on the shelves around Christmas time sets me in such a happy mood and they’re so delicious.
Yeah, chocolate oranges are delicious!
Yup. I love chocolate in general, and "fruit-flavored" chocolate like the chocolate oranges is usually top-tier. Pepperridge Farm's "milano" cookies also come in orange, raspberry, and other fruit flavors of chocolate.
You only get chocolate oranges at christmas?! That's inhuman, I'm so sorry.
This movie's gotten so much mockery over the years, we forget how refreshing it was in the DCEU. This is still in the top 3 of that franchise, along with The Suicide Squad and Shazam 1.
Doesn't help that most of the DCEU is as entertaining as eating wet newspaper.
Hopefully James Gunn can do something with it. Paper Machete is still a thing, right?
Yeah but that’s kinda like saying Breaking Dawn is the best part of Twilight. Like… yeah, but what’s the competition?
Mache, obviously. Though a paper version of Danny Trejo would improve the Paper Mache experience, and the DCEU, too.
In related news, COVID-19 is one of top 3 pandemics!
Thanks for sharing the bit about being creative vs unwinding. As a songwriter it's definitely a struggle to make time to be creative, but it's good to know that creativity and other aspects of life don't have to be mutually exclusive.
I had a sudden urge to rewatch a bunch of BriTANicK videos about a week and a half ago, A Monologue for Three was one of them. I don't know how you managed to send me to that video before this video came out, but kudos, that was impressive.
Also something, something BriTANicK is tight.
The Wonder Woman pitch meeting was actually the first one I ever saw. Still makes me chuckle to this day, but I did not understand the "Super easy; barely an inconvenience" bit at the end until I watched other Pitch Meetings.
*Confession time:* This was my FIRST pitch meeting, which the YT algorithm recommended to me!! And the rest is history 😊
#fullcircle
I LOVE BriTANick! So glad they're getting a shout out here. We will henceforth require at least one deep-cut comedy reference per episode.
Ok, that advice about being in an "input phase" is actually super helpful, thank you!
Love the revisited pitch meetings. You're 100% right that Terry's chocolate oranges are amazing. I discovered them late in life when my wife introduced me to them. Her family would put them in stockings for Christmas as an updated version of the older tradition of putting real oranges in the stockings. I was confused at first, but they are delicious, and smacking them against a table is indeed really fun.

Hey thanks for introducing us to BriTANicK. Some hilarious sketch comedy for sure. Demand a kickback dangit!
Wonder Woman was definitely one of the better films in the DCEU. The only glaring issue I had with this film was how they portrayed Ares. At first I thought the idea of him was interesting, that, despite him being the God of War, he only whispered into people's ears and into how to create certain weapons, of which he just watched them how they would act if they had such knowledge. And I thought the lesson that the movie was trying to convey was an interesting idea, as a human's cruelty is based on how they used their knowledge rather than the influence of others. But then they tossed it out the window by having Wonder Woman and Ares fight each other. And of course, when Ares died everyone just stopped fighting and the war ended right there. This ending, in my opinion, was completely hypocritical when it came to the overall story and message. And what made it even worse is, despite the fact that Ares is declared dead, wars are still happening afterwards. So what was even the point of killing off Ares if there were other wars and conflicts that happened after the events of Wonder Woman the movie?
She only killed the Greek god of war. There's still the Roman god of war, and the Norse god of war, and the Egyptian god of war...
I don't know if any of those actually feature in DC lore.
Definitely overthinking comic books
As much as I really WANTED to love David Thewlis as Ares, it just really didn’t work for me when they pretty much immediately launched into HUGE SUPERHERO PUNCHOUT, because heaven forbid we have a superhero movie where the climax isn’t people bunching or blasting each other in the face (and of the many, many strengths he has as an actor, “physically imposing” is not one of them).
And Ares as more of a manipulator/puppetmaster (which he 100% WAS able to deliver on) and the theme that humanity CHOOSES to embrace violence and war (which they’d built up throughout the rest of the movie) was basically undercut by the war wrapping up once Ares died.
Despite that, it was one of the few generally good DC movies we got.
@OmnicidalClown1992 & @hkfifty871 100% agree on all counts. Like Ryan alluded to, they were SO CLOSE to having a really strong message and then threw it all away
@@deemo5245 No you are definitely underthinking media

The "being distracted by subtitles" argument always seems so funny to me because in my country a huge portion of that comes from TV is foreign and have subtitles and I have never felt distracted by them.
This idea about input and output in creativity is actually very deep, Ryan. The best writers, artists, directors are those, who can reflect the real life in their work. People usually call them geniuses. If you are an author it is important to remember, that you are doing your stuff not only for you, but for the audience, and if the reflection of the world in your work will resonate with people's reflection, your work will become immortal in the mind of humanity.

Iirc he's answered it in one of the revisited pitch meetings. I couldn't tell you which one though.
@ Ryan, you should expand this Pitch Meeting idea, cover computer games. Everything you're saying about movies can be said about the current state of the computer game industry. My girlfriend came up with that idea, and she's spot on, it would totally work.
The end bit about creativity was very true and inspiring. I will show it to my 21-year-old boy because he should hear it from another 21-year-old boy. You have done good work here, young man!

Oh shit! A BriTaniK shoutout???? Been a fan of theirs for over a decade. One of the funniest channels on UA-cam.
Hi Ryan! I love your pitch meetings.
My question is this: has anyone involved in the movies that have been the subject of your pitch meetings ever reached out to you to give you any feedback (positive or negative)? If so, can you share who/ what it was?
I think he answered this in a previous Pitch Meeting review; it was one of the first ones, I believe.
Simu Liu (from Shang-Chi and the Legend of the Ten Rings) said in an interview that he loved Pitch Meeting, and later appeared in one of them.
My wife introduced me to chocolate oranges and I love them. When she was young, Santa would put one in each stocking on Christmas Eve, but to fit in the stockings, Santa pulled the chocolate oranges out of the box, and my wife grew up thinking the name of this treat was the only words found outside the wrapper on a sticker, "Whack and unwrap" which would be quite the unique name.
Christmas tradition for me
