    VERY well done !! Travel to Paddle Skydivers have a wonderful addition to your arsenal of safety. The risers are connected to the shoulders of a rig by a 'three ring circus'. If you have to escape the beener, the rope entangled,, The release is an easy pull that almost instantly disconnects. No knife,, no time required. Throw bags and a three ring circus are a match up. Been thinking that for years. Spent years in both sports.

      That's very interesting, I'd like to see that in practice! I'm going to have a look for skydiving videos that show me exactly what that looks like!

      Is that not the same as a quick release on a Safety Vest though?

      @@connorcoultas9629 My PFD a search and rescue Type 1 (I am big, I like the 25 pounds of flotation.) Has a lifting D-ring,,, not the same thing. Search skydive videos labeled, "Three ring circus" A three ring circus under tension will release almost instantly with a simple tug. One pound of force can release 1,000 pounds of tension. I tried to leave a link of a really good video here. It would not permit me to leave the link. Don't know why.

    Got a good laugh out of all these people freaking out about the carabiner. Looks like they got recommended the raft guide near-miss video the same time I did, and now they feel the need to run around and police everyone else's gear. I mean sure, it's a hazard to be aware of, but hardly worth the reaction. Cool video, thanks for sharing.

    non locking carabiner to non releasable strap?

    • @TraveltoPaddle
      @TraveltoPaddle  3 роки тому +4

      That was the line for the boat. My safety did not rely on that line or carabiner, and I was confident that I could unclip it should I need it. I was secured on a tight line with a locked carabiner clipped into the O ring on my releasable BA strap :)

      @@TraveltoPaddle your safety was dependent on that choice, and you and the people around you got lucky that you didn't drown. Glad you, your equipment, and friends all came out OK, but this is a whole video of what not to dos!

    • @TraveltoPaddle
      @TraveltoPaddle  3 роки тому +6

      In what way was my safety dependent on that choice? You realise I was Securely attached to a tight line clipped onto the O ring on the back of my BE with a screwed up Crab? That's what my safety relied on, not the one that everyone is commenting on. I have checked my decisions with experienced safety coaches and, no offence, I'll take their word over a stranger on the internet. Luck had no part in this rescue.

    Sobering to see how difficult it is to get to a rescue so close to the bank and in relatively benign water

    • @driventoaccount3276
      @driventoaccount3276 3 роки тому

      The mere fact the guys pinned broadside and getting recirced in the hydraulic suggests it anything but benign water, it’s obviously 2-3 kinda slide into a class 6 hole, undercut, not sure. But that creek is got good flow…

    • @TraveltoPaddle
      @TraveltoPaddle  3 роки тому +1

      Yes, it was very hard to get to. That slide was fairly powerful though, with slippery rock under foot. It's little water compared to most rivers around the world, but a little gravity gives it a lot of force!

    • @TraveltoPaddle
      @TraveltoPaddle  3 роки тому +2

      @@driventoaccount3276 I wouldn't say that was a class 6 hole. Certainly potential for holding someone, but very easy to get a bag to, which I think factors into grading. This is considered grade 4 by most paddlers who've paddled the section 🙂 it certainly is a fast flowing rapid though, and not a fun swim.

    why go down the chute? the left bank was 1 step off the rocks you on

    • @TraveltoPaddle
      @TraveltoPaddle  3 роки тому

      I don't think that a gopro gives you a full detailed view of the situation. The rock was not one step away. As you can see from the rest of the video the seat of the boat was a large leap away from the bank, and I had the advantage of being 10 inches taller and jumping off the slippery steep bank, not onto it. I also had more to hold onto while landing. The swimmer wouldn't have made that jump, even if they had managed to get up properly. 100% they'd have gone down the rest of the rapid anyway, but maybe with an added fall first. Once the deck was pulled, that was the only way out.

    Great place to attach the bag side of the line to your pfd…

    • @TraveltoPaddle
      @TraveltoPaddle  3 роки тому

      Why not? My safety was not depending on that line. It was not in the way of what I was doing and it was not locked, so it could be removed if it did become in the way. I was secured on a tight line with a locked carabiner clipped into the O ring on my releasable BA strap :)

    • @scarlettm3476
      @scarlettm3476 3 роки тому +6

      Because if you got trapped in the water and the carabina or rope was under load it would be very hard to unclip. Could cut the rope of course, but if the carabina got you snagged on something you would have had to cut your pfd strap. Ideally it would’ve been clipped somewhere that is quick releasable. Otherwise slick rescue!

    • @TraveltoPaddle
      @TraveltoPaddle  3 роки тому +2

      I can see your point, and perhaps having the bag thrown to me after I was positioned would have worked too. I made the call after checking I had my knife, and that someone was monitoring that line. It's also likely that this Gopro video doesn't show the rapid as clearly as I saw it. To me I saw that the rock was fairly smooth and that the line could be unclipped or cut if necessary, and that there were a very limited number of places to snag that line (just the boat). I'm not disagreeing with you, however I was confident that all eventualities were covered and that my team were able to get me out of there in seconds, should something go wrong. In the end I was able to set myself up with more stability on the boat than I anticipated, and perhaps next time I would choose to get to the boat and then receive the line as a second stage :)
