  • Welcome, Friends, to Episode 277 of Mike Finnegan's Garage. I'm excited about this one because as you know, a week ago, my transmission exploded on the starting line of Alabama International Dragway. Well, I'm happy to report that thanks to GForce Racing Transmissions and Tick Performance, the transmission is fixed and we are ready to test the car again. It wasn't easy to make happen, since I had to leave town to film an episode of Roadkill right after that fateful day when Blasphemi grenaded the gearbox. But thanks to my friends, the car was transported from Alabama to North Carolina where Team Tick performed a miracle using new parts provided by GForce. I hope you enjoy the video and burnouts and please check out the following page to get some excellent discounts on parts for your project:
    teamtick.tickperformance.com/
and if you'd like to continue supporting the channel and Blasphemi then please visit my website and grab a new FSM Precision Research & Destruction shirt.
    Thanks!
    -Finnegan

I started life going every weekend to a drag race in the early 70’s. Dad raced a 55 Chevy two door post car with a full cage. A Built 327 with a Muncie M-22 transmission with a 5:13 gear with a straight axle front end. We pulled the 55 race car with a 55 Nomad on a light weight 2 rail trailer. I slept on the front bench seat and mom and dad slept in the back of the Nomad. We traveled 4-5 states, Indiana, Ohio, Kentucky, Tennessee and West Virginia. Gasser class was just a normal class in the 70’s. Dad kept blowing up the Muncie transmission. In 1970 Lenco came out with a transmission that was supposed to be good to 800hp then. We went home to the farm after dad broke the transmission at the 74 nationals in Indy. We sold a couple of moms high dollar barrel racing horses so dad could buy a new Lenco transmission. He never broke another trans after this. I know these new TKO Tremec transmissions can handle big horsepower and abuse today. But back in the day guys was using stock GM Muncie’s. M-21 or the M-22 Rock Crusher.
Side note; I still use a light weight two rail trailer to this day to haul cars. It works like a lift at the track if you need to change a transmission or clutch. I can pull it with a 1/2 ton truck with a shell or station wagon. I still sleep in the bed of the truck on a cot. I laugh when I see guys pull in with Toterhomes or Diesel pushers pulling huge stacker trailers. They are so far away from where how grassroots racing started. Are those guys more comfortable in their air conditioned rigs? Sure, but I can spend my money on the race car. 🇺🇸🦅🏁

This is a good demonstration of torque, inertia, friction and torsional strength. When you dump the clutch, and the tires are glued to the ground, you will get clutch slippage, or something else will give. You simply found the weakest part. Tire slippage would be the easiest solution!

  • @dazaspc

That clutch release controller looks like the perfect cheat code for a manual transmission. The ability to hold it on the take up point and set a release point that can be controlled by the ecu be it time, rpm, speed or even wheel slip measured by the ECU has just taken all the talent out of the art of consistent reliable launches or even clutched shifts. You should then be able to downsize the gear box I would think or even go back to clutch shifting at speed if you are having wheel slip problems whilst rolling. Racing down shifts could also be improved to prevent wheel skid and improve stability. Implemented properly you could go back to the old school clutched autos and do away with the torque converters,
A very nice simple device that should make a huge difference to anyone who uses a manual transmission. It deserves an award.

So glad to see you adding the clutch slipper mechanism! When you broke the tranny I thought right away it was because the track was prepped super sticky for those high powered radial cars. Worse yet the surface was cold making it even tighter. As you pointed out your clutch is designed to slip so the drivetrain absorbed all the shock when neither the clutch nor the slicks could slip. I’m guessing that had something not broken your front tires would have been pointed moonward! That slipper device should make the car more consistent on questionable drag and drive surfaces and also be way easier on the drivetrain components. Bill is clearly a very smart guy to have come up with this. And blue tooth compatible? 👍
