  • This is my 281st Episode of Mike Finnegan's Garage and I filmed it while I was traveling to film Roadkill. Once we wrapped filming Roadkill in Gardena, California I drove to Torrance, California to the headquarters of Ace Racing Engines. There, I got to look at and fondle parts that I've collected over the past 12 months for an upcoming project car. This episode is about the very first steps in building the engine, namely measuring the oil clearances of each crankshaft main bearing. It's a sweet video that will help you when it's time to build your first engine. If you have questions, post them in the comments and if you'd like to speak with Stef of Ace Racing Engines, the visit their website here: ace-engines.com
Here are some helpful links the parts I bought for my engine build:
Noonan Edge water-cooled engine block: noonanrace.com/products/ls-ed...
    Manton LS7-style Rocker System:mantonpushrods.com
    Winberg Crankshafts: winbergcrankshafts.com/index....

Thanks for watching! If you'd like to support this channel the please visit my website and purchase some of the the new shirts, hats and hoodies I've created for you! You'll find them at: www.fsmgarage.com

Another great video Mike. Love seeing an engine shop that's spotless and as clean and organized as an operating room. I remember, back in the day, when engine shops were always dark, cluttered and greasy. The new block and rotating assembly look like jewelry. Perfect.

Very informative video Mike!! Thanks for sharing 👍. I always loved building engines. Years ago I built a 350 for my brother's sportsmen dirt modified. While everyone else was spending 25-30k for a special built engine (i.e. Tony File engine) , a lot of us who love the sport, but don't have a endless bank account, made due with what we could get.
I had a 1973 350 engine from a Canadian Chevy Suburban. 2 barrel, bolt block. The block casting # 3970014. I had the machine shop install splayed 4 bolt main caps and bore it 30 thou over. I had a factory steel 350 crank, and had it turned 10/10 because of wearing showing. I also had a set of pink rods I bought from a friend. I used Keith Black hypereutectic pistons and rings. The heads I had were 327/300hp casting number 3917291. I had the bigger 2.02/1.60 valves installed with bronze guides. The camshaft was from Crane, and was a hydraulic tappet, with the same specs as the 1970 LT1 Vette camshaft. Fluid damper, and a Pete Jackson gear drive.
I had a digital scale, and weighed everything for the rotating assembly making sure it was dead on. It ran great.
One night my brother was pushed up into the marbles, and panicked. He coasted into the pits upset and apologized to me. I asked him what noise it made when he shut it down. "I don't know, but look!". He hit the button on the tachometer to show the highest rpm. It buried the needle at 9k. My father says, fire it up so I can hear it. After my brother fired up the car, my dad's words were 😂😂😂. "It's fine!! Get the bleep- ity- bleep back out there!!". While this was going on, they were clearing up the track for the accident that he was pushed up the track for. He started in the back of the field, still on the lead lap. My bragging rights:
    1) he won the race.
    2) he set the track record lap time
    3) I built a Chevy 350 that turned 9k rpm! My total out of pocket was only 6k!😎🇺🇲🇺🇲

My Lord man… this level of precision and dedication to detail is bordering on insane, measurements to half a thou, those giant, billet main caps at big block spec… That crankshaft is nothing short of billet perfection. Now I see why these bullets can spin north of 10k revs and hang together. And now Mr. Finnegan has us all slobbering to see what this unit is powering… I’m really hoping that he doesn’t keep us in suspense for long.
