- Episode 269 of Mike Finnegan's Garage is awesome because not only do I have the Hemi back between the frame rails of my Bel Air but for once I have video footage of the Hei being assembled. This is a huge deal because every other time I've had someone else work on this engine it's been because I was out of town filming Roadkill and couldn't be there. This time my buddy Joe was at Harrel Engine and Dyno to witness the assembly and I couldn't be happier about the results and I'm pumped to put the car back on the dyno. Petes a busy dude, I'm seeing him everywhere! Glad a guy that smart and talented is getting recognition. I hear he's pretty good at doing stuff.
Pete is Real good at doing stuff....just ask Cleetus
Real good at doing stuff
He made Leroy go 6.93 at 207mph.
I see what you did there hahaha
Job security.
Man what a great guy Pete is helping cleetus break into the 6 with his motor and getting Finnegan hemi dialed in can't wait to see what kinda of power it makes
Please don't money shift this, Finn
Couple things #1 Pete is a smart dude and really knows his stuff.
#2 when ur wife was out of town ur kids were making sure u didn't burn down the house not the other way around. Lol!
Glad to see ur finally getting ur motor straightened out.
You & you're are so taxing to type out.

Joe already a natural host. Great addition to the channel Finnegan!
Joe has hanger-oner written all over him.
Love to see the old school speed handle and ratchets. Maybe I’m a dinosaur too, but I hate to see builders zipping away with an impact. Like Pete said, there’s something to be said for the “feel” you get with traditional tools.
Goddamn right.
You should not see any decent Engine Builder using air or cordless tools when doing assembly on a engine.
The ONLY case where it's acceptable to use powered tool heads in an engine build, is the highly calibrated and extremely precise robot systems used in factory production lines for mass-produced civilian transport vehicles.
EVERY top end sportscar, hypercar, low volume production edition, the manufacturers get in a specialist trained engine assembler, the sort of folks who will fit a plaque to every engine they assemble, with pride in thier work, and use hand tools.
100% you can feel any tight spots in threads. Especially critical if you're setting an initial torque then following with so many degrees after to stretch bolts.
Came here to say this. Funny thing is, I learned most of my mechanic know how from my dad, and we used hand tools on everything, not just engines. It's still a habit of mine. It's only recently that I've realized that people use impacts for everything. I thought they were just for breaking lug nuts loose!
I’m no engine builder but I’ve polished a few turds over the years and I have to say I wish I would have had Pete’s videos back in the day to educate me. I appreciate the fact that he spends the time to explain the process whether its a high dollar race motor or a turd!❤
Joe has been a good addition to the channel. He fits in well, captures good content, and asks good questions.
Pete is such a great and humble guy. He knows what hes doing that's for sure.
New guy did a good job filming and talking to the camera.
LOVE watching engine building! Back in the 80's when I was early in my wrench twisting day (mechanic) I rebuilt a lot of engines, best part of my job! Originally, after school I wanted to be a machinist, took two years of machine shop trade school, but getting my foot in the door was going to take years so I turned to my second passion of working on cars and just stuck with that, retired an ASE Master Tech, I was good at it and Loved it! Back then we rebuilt everything, engines, transmission, even starters, alternators, brake master cylinders, just about everything. Rebuild engines and trans were my fav jobs but engines was #1, I still got to apply many of the skills I learned in machine shop. Rebuilding them is lost art now because shops labor rates are so high, it's cheaper to but a used or crate engine, which is sad in my book, mechanics have become parts changers. Tired & retired now I have the time to work on just my own stuff, I just got done doing a frame up restoration on an 85 GMC S15 (same as Chevy S10), I rebuilt the 2.8 that was in the truck (rebuilt many of those 2.8's back in the day) and put a loping Comps Cam kit in it along with headers, man does she sound sweet! So many people ask me, "Is that a V8 in that truck?" Nope, sounds like it but it's a V6. ;-) I do want to put an old school small block in the truck sometime in the next few years but for now I'm having a ton of with my toy. And my wife is happy I'm off my azz and working in the shop again! My 2.8 running off the headers --> ua-cam.com/video/M8aHF3FDCC4/v-deo.html Keep up the videos Mike! I LOVE watching them! If you want to see my truck build I have a thread running on the S10 forums with pics from the start, let me know, don't want to post it publicly but gladly send it to you privately, I know you like the S10's ;-) And tell Fry to keep making the Engine Masters shows! I watch every one of them! You and Fry are so awesum! Wish I could hang with you guys one day, I'll sweep your floors LoL!
Pete is real good at doing things. Can't wait to see Blasphemi making the power it should.
I'm so glad Pete and Steve are willing to share their motor wizardry with us mere mortals. 🙏
Love the engraving on the piston tops…..so cool and unique. Also, loved the conversation with Pete. These guys are a wealth of knowledge. Thanks to Joe for capturing this footage!!! Can’t wait to see this beast in action again 👍💪😎
I was surprised to see the engraving. Would have figured the sharp edges of it would cause hot spots on the piston and maybe even piston erosion, but what do I I know? I'll defer to Pete.
I’m not seeing engraving, but a design in the coating
@@Keifsandersonexactly what I thought but it looks lazer etched like u do on glass so still a smooth finish.
@@johnsnow1355 Agreed. When I saw them close up later, they looked laser etched.
I absolutely love all your content and love the fact that no matter how fubar the situation is with blasphemi or any other one of your vehicles you just keep goin,
I swear we're brothers in arms and it's absolutely great
Thanks for watching!
@@FinnegansGarage is Dave they
I stopped racing for the last 2 years.. Life beign life. But watching you just going for it and enjoying life and what you love doign really inspired me to finally get back at it.
You know. Pete is real good at dooing stuff........ LOL. The motor he just built for Cleetus just pust his Vette cart to the 6's.
Amazing how a smaller CI engine can make more power if done correctly.
It allows for more rpm which keeps the car in gear longer which means more mph per gear and helps with longevity some
Less torque so it doesn’t kill the tire
I can't imagine how big Pete's mind is and everything that man can do he is freaking awwesome
Knowledge is power. They're building POWER. I love this video even though I'm not building a monster motor. This is a priceless instructional segment for both backyard and professional builders. Thanks for the excellent content...
When you need someone real good at doing stuff, you call Pete!
I'm excited about this one... I've got a good feeling about it. I can't wait to see and hear it on the chassis dyno. Gotta get my headphones charged up for this one! I don't know about you guys, but I'm ready for fast and reliable Blasphemi!
Pete is a Legend
2:46 No, the kids were left behind to make sure that Dad didn’t burn down the house 😂😂 2:46
Petes a bad dude! Been following him since he was the first to the 3's on a radial a long long time ago!.
Pete is pure no nonsense engine builder. Listening to him and Cletus makes to total sense on building a combination that fits the car and not twist the motor trying to rev the piss out of it trying to think that’s how you get horse power.
I aways like to use a hand held speed Ratchet that you were using on the heads brings back memories now everybody's using electric ratchets now days great stuff Peat GODSPEED
Love it and can't wait to see this back in blasphemi and on the dyno getting tested. Also wish the videos were longer cause I can't get enough fsm content. Thanks for bringing all of us along for the fun
Great to see that Keith Black Hemi getting some love Mike.
Pete Harrell is the man and you're gonna love that HED built Hemi, the man is a LEGEND and sorcerer
Totally understand why his channel is called Real Good At Doing Stuff. He’s everywhere making everybody’s stuff better. Breaking records in Florida, busting out fantastic knowledge at his shop.
Have waited for this since drag week last year. I just had a feeling mike would be rebuilding that motor after he fried it the first time. Pete does amazing work and it was awesome to see a master at work. I'm hoping to see 1150-1200 outta this motor, hemis are bulletproof and likes to eat pistons as Mike found out😂😂 MOPAR for life!!
What I saw, among all the goodness, is 8 chances to win at a future contest for when Mike blows up this engine. Those pistons will be a great addition to that with the "FSM" logo on them. And it will happen. We all know it.
The car is cursed, it does not want a hemi in it.
Totally agree with the comments about impact usage. There are many places you want that "hand feel". What really aggravates me is people using them on vintage projects, where you want to make sure threads and fasteners are up to par.
I am ashamed of the tools I own, and don't know all the uses of. This video was awesome. It is doubtful I will ever degree a cam, but now I can visualize the process. Thanks.
Back in the day, we measured piston to head clearance (or bump clearance) using soft solder stuck to the piston using a touch of sticky grease. Turn the engine over to squash the solder, remove.the head, and then measure the solder thickness with a micrometre.
Nice to see Joe and Pete together. Great rapport there.
Great to see the troubleshooting... Love the blasphemi
The only other motor ive ever seen that had a domed piston like that was in my old sportster. Super awesome build, and joe did a great job with pete, he asked all the right questions and his conversation with pete were great and kept me intrigued. Your channel Mr Finnegan is in my top 3 on UA-cam, because you still love it and do it for you and not the views and its not over produced. Mr Tony Angelo is in the top 3 also for the same reasons. The love for your projects is awesome and relatable to us who have cars, trucks and toys that we love!!!! Keep it up!!!
@ClickOnProfile383 You're pathectic scammer
Looking forward to seeing how it runs. Thanks for sharing.
Excellent work once again Harold Engines and Dyno
Thanks for another great and informative video Mike! Can't wait to see Blasphami tear down the track!!!

I ate this video up like a kid in a candy store..awesome job pete. Id say im pretty good judge of character and he definitely seems like a decent dude. Id have him build mine....
Great video glad to see the hemi coming back together now time to see what kind of power it makes
I’m glad I’m not the only one that has a love hate relationship with there ring compressor tools lol. She’s lookin good God Bless.
Pete is awesome... Just a super solid dude
Pete is VERY patient. Most engine guys hate the questions while assembling.
Pete is really good at doing stuff.
My favorite build of all time.
I so feel that thing about tools with feel. I'm an electrotech, and despite the arthritis, and despite the fact i have 4 power drivers, i always reach for the Wera manual drivers first
Pete's Real good at doing stuff!!
Kudos to Pete and your right hand man Joe for gettin’ it done for this episode, can’t wait to see you and Blasphemi gettin’ it done next with Pete tickling the computer keys.
When i seen FSM on top of the pistons i knew Pete is THE guy!
I LOVE compression and Pete basically said he wanted more with deeper valve reliefs so the camshaft can hold the exhaust valve open longer and sooner. Ok he didn't say that last part but thats what i heard!
Pete is so good at doin stuff
Re: the V-band point. I use a lot of t-bolt hose clamps for watercraft exhaust and I learned very quickly to stop using impact on them.
Great episode. I love this car.
Dang, that Pete sure is real good at doing stuff
Are you good at doing stuff? 'Cause hot damn son Pete is my kinda people. Real matter of fact and just a good 'ol boy. This is how it works, and this is how it breaks. What a legend.
People always talk shit about the L.S. platform, but it's g.m's best engine platform they've ever made and I'm a mopar guy
Pete really knows his stuff, and you want that especially when dealing with hemi’s.
Mike and Cleeter keeping these guy busy.

What a great video! Lots of valuable information for a gearhead brain to munch on!
Pete is good at doing stuff. Beer money with lyle will get down anywhere anytime!
I want this incarnation of Blasphemi's engine to give you the power, performance and LONGEVITY she (& you) deserve...we love the content, the thrash, the glimpses of success, and the heartbreak, but now it's time for the WIN! That being said...when that motor comes apart (for the right reasons) you need to put those FSM custom engrave pistons up as serious swag give aways'!
Can’t wait to see it back in Blashemi
Looks awesome mike can't go wrong with a hemi hope you dont have anymore hick ups down the road
ol' Pete is pretty good at doin' stuff! 😎👍🏼👍🏼
Cool engine building room with nice Mini Split A/C. Pete is a top shelf engine builder and tuner, so I have no doubt this engine will stay alive and with more power than ever. I myself prefer aluminum rods especially in my blown gas flat drag boat back in the day. Steel rods if you throw one cause more damage to your engine and tear up a lot of boats. Great video guys. Thank you. I love watching race engines being built.
@ClickOnProfile383 wow the hacker is busy today looks like everyone’s lucky today. Thieves are in the same group as murders, rapists. Pedophiles all them fine scumbags.
I think one of the Pro Stock guys said the difference between Aluminum and Steel rods was with Aluminum when a rod goes he might be able to salvage the heads and block, whereas with steel he would be lucky to salvage one of the valve covers
Really good at doing stuff 😍
I see Pete’s name popping up in everyone’s comments about how “really good at doing stuff”😂 he is. Which he is too and it’s awesome UA-cam was able to put him in the spot light. I’m just wondering how many other badass builders and tuners are out there that deserve some light. Him and others like him need to be in the hot rodding and racing history books.
Someone forgot to plug Pete’s channel “real good at doing stuff” this guy is a independent genius 🇦🇺👍🤙
I can't wait to see what it does on the dyno!!!
@ClickOnProfile383 🖕🏻 Scammer
The guy that designed the Quad 4 is also responsible for the 2V 4.6 and the Northstar (also a 4.6) the North star morphed into the vortec inline 4, 5 and 6cyl (4200). I have no doubt that the LS is related to the SBF.
Pete is a Badass 🇺🇸💪🏼🛠️
10:35 ive been screaming to heaven about turbo vband clamps and impacts for years. Its a stainless bolt and nut...lock nut. Friction type lock nut not a nylon type due to heat. So slamming one down super heats that nut and bolt. I run them down with a quarter inch ratchet or my blue point air ratchet at about 80 to 90 psi air at the hose. Its slow and that nut still gets pretty warm just doing a steady run down. Then they either break the next time you remove because its welded itself or it fails because its brittle. In semi and buses using air tools which run slower than modern electrics those clamps rarely fail but now that turbos are everywhere they fail regularly. You can run the t bolt clamps on couplers fine as they are nyloc. But you cant run friction lock ESPECIALLY stainless nuts and bolts or problems WILL occur.
It's not even really because it's 'friction lock' or any kind of locking fastener, any stainless hardware will cold weld itself together if you jam them down with power tools. Broke a lot of bolts before I read about cold welding.
I did know that on the abratable coatings!! Very cool you can set the clearance tighter and it will take off what it needs!! That’s bad ass
congrats pete on the 6 sec pass with leroy keep doin your thing man
Harrell Engine & Dyno gets a win.

Great content thanks for sharing
😁👍💪Pete is one cool bilder
Nice big uppy downy thingies 🙂My Brother Drags an old "surviver" bucket here in the UK, he would LOVE a small block, let alone a big block or hemi. Currently running a 4.6 (I think) Rover V8, has a blower re build to do over the Winter for a built 3.5. Not absolutely sure of the figures.
In the past this hemi seems to be about as durable as glass but a very sweet engine kudos for not bailing on it after the second time it f-ed up

The wealth of knowledge Pete has is awe inspiring and the fact he prefers to use real hand tools is more impressive
Pete looks like he’s real good at doing stuff
Funny how next to Cleet, I never noticed how tall Pete is
I think Pete and 12 Volt Dave have similar voices. Nice job on the engine build!
Crazy how close the wrist pin is to the oil rings!
More Blasphemy! Joe Cole is all around perfect for the show. I bet he can bench press the transmission too 😉
Those guys did a great job in your absence!

Hey Joe, You are a great addition to the videos. But on thing, at the end You said her is the short block. When the heads and top end are fitted it is called a long Block.
8:21 i love it pete! Lol
When Pete was talking about the pistons all i heard was self clearancing. Thats my style!

Pete getting Leroy into the 6's!!!!!!
Nice to see the speed handle, exactly what I use. What about the before and after compression, and how much of the increase in dome size was necessary to offset the deeper valve relief?
