Manual transmissions make driving fun! But what happens when you hit the clutch and shift? This Science garage goes INSIDE the manual transmission to look at what makes those gears drive your wheels, and what keeps your engine from stalling out when they stop. If you’ve ever wondered how a manual transmission works, this video is for you!

What a fantastic explanation. You guys are great. I’m an engineering student who’s been around manual transmissions my entire life, and have sat multiple people down trying to do a similar thing with diagrams and talking about how a clutch works. But this takes the cake. I’m showing people this video now. Beautifully done!
Ive watched many transmissions videos and this is the one that made me understand transmissions better
Up until today the only transmission videos I saw were when they blew up.

Thanks a lot Bart! It makes so much more sense now. When you push the gear stick up or down, the hub moves either left or right depending whether you chose up for higher or down for lower of that side. This perfectly explains the specifically chosen |-|-| shape of the stick's range of positions for 5/6 speed transmissions!
Here are some topics I would like to see covered in science garage:
-longitudinal vs transverse engines
-inline vs v cylinder configurations
-How a differential works

Boy do I like watching this guy. Buying my first sports car and definitely going manual! But know idea how to drive manual. Nice explanation, thanks!
Is it sad this taught me more about how to work on a transmission than my automotive class did? And this is a class where they taught how to take apart and put back together an entire engine
Did they not teach you how to take apart and assemble a transmission, only an engine?
Honestly I came into throw video unmotivated and thinking that I would not understand any of this, but he is literally so good at explaining everything and keeping my attention, I am starting to understand transmissions a lot better now

My dad explained it to me as a kid like riding a bicycle with the 10 year paddle on them, it was pretty easy to understand after that
Freaking finally!!! After nearly a day of looking at videos, yours is the one that best describes the use of the clutch. Jeez...
One thing that 99% of people forget is that the final gear reduction of the axle completely eliminates the significance of the actual numerical ratios of the transmission. For example, my volvo’s 5 speed automatic doesn’t have overdrive, but it still makes a nice 2300 rpm at 65 mph, and still gives me 33 mpg at that speed. It only has a 1:1 ratio for 5th gear but the final drive ratio is relatively low at 2.76. My subaru impreza’s manual transmission has an overdrive of 0.78 but it cranks out 2650 rpm at 65 mph. It actually revs higher than my volvo even though it has overdrive. And the tire sizes on each car is less than 1% different ( 205/50/17 vs 195/60/16). The final drive on my subaru is 3.9, which explains the discrepency. The overall ratio is what matters, not because a ratio is an overdrive or whatever. It’s true that in the past, there were fewer choices for axle ratios, and overdrive ratios were compatible with those ratios because they were already pretty high to begin with. For example, 3.73 and 4.10 are extremely common final drives on older vehicles, and without overdrive, most cars and trucks will rev too high, but if 2.44 and 2.76 were more common, overdrive would be excessive. Also, it’s true that lower rpm when cruising is advantageous to fuel efficiency, but the benefits dwindle. The actual values differ between every application, in my opinion the top gear ratio should put the engine rpm around 1500-2000 rpm at 70 mph. Any lower isn’t going to do you much good if any and it just makes transmissions more complicated by giving them too many gears.
You have the passion for science like Michael Stevens and the delivery of Charley Day. Keep up the good work.
Apparently if you make an educational AND entertaining video, you can put the ad at the end and people will still watch it! This is the best video I've ever seen in my life. Thank you from the bottom of my cold, black heart.
I bought my first car yesterday and it’s a manual and my dad is teaching me how to drive it. I first drove with my grandma and she gave me conflicting advice which my dad said is wrong but it’s still stuck in my head since it’s the first I heard. The hardest thing for me is reversing and starting after I get into 1st gear. I also have trouble easing off the clutch after I switch gears so it makes the ride kind of jumpy. But I’m sure this will all go away with practice. :)

This video was really helpfull
I was looking for an explanation on clutches, and understood it really well!
I wish science garage was still a thing
Wait wait wait, go more in depth about double clutching. I need to know!
Double clutching just means you do this:
Push clutch pedal.
Shift out of gear into neutral
Release clutch
Push clutch again
Shift into next gear
Release clutch and Go.
@@thetman0068 i know but WHY? what are the advantages/ disadvantages... do you have to rev match? ...how do yo know the proper rpm for each gear?
Ive known how to drive stick since i was 10 but nobody tought me this.
@thekidofpt1 don’t know if you’re still waiting for an answer, but the primary advantage of a dual clutch transmission or double clutching is that you will not feel as big of a shock in the car and the transmission will not take as much of a beating. Basically, since dual clutching makes it so that the change from gear to gear is not abrupt, there will be no shake n bake in the trans as there is not as much force suddenly transferred from gear to gear. This is why many modern sports cars are incorporating to dual clutching and that if you ride in early 2000s sports cars, you will be jostled around by the automatic single clutch transmissions. Don’t know if this helped or even made sense, but hope you figured this out.

I really enjoy listening to you guys. Keep it up and thank you.
Thanks for the info
We really don’t double clutch when driving big rigs, since the transmission is unsynchronized you can actually float gears and not even use the clutch unless you have to make a full stop, a big rig is more forgiving than a regular car transmission or as mu brother would say “its semi-automatic” you just match the rpms to the speed and the gearshift pops right out and you push it into the next gear, clearly you can do this on a regular car but thats probably not that much of a good idea
