    I built this model after viewing a "Magic nuts and screw threads" video. For any particular rotation the nuts travel in opposite directions on the bolt. The nuts are calibrated to advance (or retreat) the same distance with each revolution, so technically the "thread pitch" is identical, albeit opposite. The bolt has a continuous thread, though perhaps not conventional.
    Parts built on a Solido SD300 Pro.

    With care, you can see a fine thread profile on the tips of the major thread, so the 'wrong' nut is riding on those threads. When viewed orthogonally these fine threads will be impossible to see as their helical angle is the same as the major threads but in the opposite direction. They need to be viewed at the reverse helical angle on any particular peak. Would be even better machined from metal. Very Clever!

    "But, but... righty tighty, lefty loosey..." (watches video) "NOOO!" (head explodes) :P

    The very shallow, fine thread at the crest of the very coarse thread is the opposite hand. Magic to the uninitiated, but a simple parlor trick to a good machinist.

      Thanks man, I was thinking how LH nut can fit in RH screw..

      Lead and pitch are separate values. I hadn't realized before that the fine thread is also a multiple start thread in order to have the same lead as the coarse thread. Lead= the distance advanced in one turn while Pitch=the distance between crests.

    All I know is "RIghty TIghty, Lefty Loosy" unless it's a left handed thread. :-)

      Depending on how you look at the normal bolt and nut. Righty tighty lefty loosy from top or bottom.

    its just a nut with reverse threads

    • @airin8284
      @airin8284 6 років тому +1

      turbotonic27 that doesn't logically make sense. You can't put a reverse threaded nut on a standard threaded bolt... They don't just screw on a regular bolt backwards -_-

      no that doesnt work it wouldnt go on if it was a reverse thread

      I made the ones in the video back in 2011. The whole story is archived in a series of old blog posts at mysd300.blogspot.com/search/label/screw and includes links to downloadable files at Thingiverse.
      Two Brass Monkeys has recently begun selling a brass version in their Etsy store at www.etsy.com/shop/twobrassmonkeys/ but those are costly because they're precision machined with specialized jigs and tooling.
