Wow! You took me right back to my childhood, growing up in Durban. I ate my first bunny chow when I was 10 yrs old. My friend told me to collect as many empty Coke bottles as I could find and he was going to give me a surprise at our local Indian t-room in Greyville. I remember it was right next door to the W Daly cold-drink factory and about two blocks from where we lived. When we got there I thought we were going to buy some sweets. But, he handed over all the bottles we had collected (in those days we got a deposit for them) and asked for two quarter beans bunnies. I had no idea what a bunny was back then. But, when they were handed over a short time later, we went outside and sat on the pavement. We unwrapped the papers and I'll never forget, the smell was incredible. We both had little plastic bags with the grated carrot salad which we ate with the top plug of the bread. Let me just say, I wasn't expecting the fierce heat from that curry. But clearly, my friend had had one before because he told me to keep eating and I would be alright. I'm glad I listened because with tears streaming down my cheeks I ate the whole thing and it changed my life.
Growing up in Durban, and on into adulthood bunny chow became my mainstay of late-night cuisine. There was no better meal to have after a night out and before bed in the early hours, than a bunny chow. I have many great memories of Overport and the many bunny shops that were open 24 hours a day. Many, many, years later my wife and I took a trip to Duban during our honeymoon. Can you guess what our first meal was? I know that India is known for its delicious food. But, there is, and always will be, something special about a curry eaten in Durban. Until you have tried it you will never know! Love you guys, and thank you for sharing your fabulous recipe with the World.
Amazing story
Read the whole thing 😅😅

@@tartanrambo i had a beans bunny from there too, many many years ago, my very first bunny !
@@fahmeidahaffejee5778 Awesome! Such a small world we live in when we can share such an experience. My other favourite was (I'll probably get this wrong!), a kebab roti with cheese from a takeaway shop in Sparks Road, Overport. I think it's still there, but it's now called Al-Razzaaq. This was another 2:00AM stop off after a great night out. Thinking about this makes want to jump on a plane right now.
Hundreds ekse 😍👍🏻
Im so glad you not using mixed masala, not knowing whats in there that makes us feel sick. Thank you for sharing 🥰

How do I do the carrot salad?
Ah thank you, homemade is the best!
Please check on my website eatmeerecipes.co.za
Use the search bar on the website and type carrot salad, the recipe will pop up 👍 you can also find the bread loaf there as well, it's best with the homemade bread 😁
@@eatmeerecipes thank you so much, I got the recipe 🙏❤️
@@CleoNoni you're welcome ❤️ let me know how your bunny's turn out 😁
Thank you for the recipe. It looks really yummy. I have one question. Is the cooking time for lamb different from the cooking time for mutton, or do both meats take the same time to cook?
You're welcome ☺️ lamb usually takes 25-30 mins and mutton takes about 45 mins depending.
I tried your recipe last month. I think I eventually succeeded in giving my friends here an Cape Town a real Durban curry experience. It was divine. Can’t fault it one bit♥️🤤. Thanks so so much. I’m cooking the curry again for tomorrow’s lunch.
@@snayezulu7251 thank you so much! So happy you are loving it 🤗 and thank you so much for taking the time to comment, really appreciate all the support, much love
Looks delicious. Dear ..why did u grate some potato
Thank you, I mentioned that part on my website eatmeerecipes.co.za
It's actually what I like to do for a thicker gravy, I don't like bunny's with an overload of oil, rather thick gravy lol, sorry I didn't mention it in the video 😅
Looks divine! Just curious why so much oil is used though?
Thanks, I don't use a lot of oil...2-3 tablespoons for curries, trust me that's less compared to most that make curries 😅
:)
How you need for vetkoek what do you need for Facebook
Hi. Thank you for the recipe! I have a question. If I replace lamb with chicken (because lamb is not so easy to get in Supermarket) do I need to change anything. Would it still be 500g of boneless chicken?
You're most welcome, with chicken you could do about 6 boneless chicken breasts (you can estimate from there how much with other boneless chicken) or you could do a full whole chicken cut into pieces (that's usually about 500-800 grams)
@@eatmeerecipes Thank you, and i have another question. Why do you put in the potatoes last? Do they take that much shorter to cook than meat?
@@derkleinemaulwurf7640 no problem, with the chicken you can add the potatoes with the boneless chicken (breasts) and you can add it about 10 minutes after adding whole chicken
Here's the whole chicken curry recipe
