Just watched this now. Town is not how it used to be 20 years ago but glad you guys were safe. You guys rock, keep on doing what you love. Yasaaass 500 bunnies a day is a killer. God bless that shop.
Thank you for bringing back special memories. The 80's and the 90's were the best ever. I worked in central Durban. The mixed vegetable bunny was the best at that time. It is good to know that Patels still exits. We relocated in 2000.
Was born and raised in the area., the Casbah. Wonderful days in our Casbah of old.Patels still standing there from the local businesses. City centre has changed so much , used to be regular chowing der but don't go much into city centre any longer. Town was clean, neat and safe cos we played on the streets , was safe even in the evenings.
Wow, must’ve been wonderful memories. These businesses have stood the test of time . Even through the toughest of times they have managed to be resilient and are so consistent. Thank you for way🫶
I agree town was clean and safe you could do ur shopping, walk to just doughnuts in pine street.. now the place is not safe.. Best my nani was one of the cooks one there b4 Patels took over she worked with them n started to sell vegetables. They had abt 3-5 ppl cooking the owner himself used to cook n check all meals..as well she made her spices at the restaurant n created new recipes with moong dhal n gram dhall. victory lounge was in competition. Gori manjara was next the next stop. Desi on warwi😢was neat n safe my uncle was the head chef before moving to Maharani to be head chef.. Now cheffing is still in our blood
Panda is similar to burfee, chocolate in it. Wow wow Seen Mr Patel still cooking great..I remember his brother as well he too used to cook was strict on food quality
Is it safe to walk around the City ? I'm from Aus and I remember SA from 90s , we used to go to Patels as Uni students , GC Kapitan (its closed I believe) , Victory Lounge , the iconic Gobble and Go (on Pine) when the Dad was alive (you probably wont know what I'm talking about) and Juicy Snacks, so many places. I miss Durban so much , I walked to the Wheel and spent so much time in Workshop and West Street. My personal opinion of Patels is that its a cheap meal but everything tastes the same and thats no insult - it is what it is , its a legend. GC Kapitan was another level of vegetarian. Sorry for long post - memories. Loved the video, bless you for chatting to old man and I remember him so well.
We were not brave enough to walk around the city as we have been victims of robbery. We were fortunate to find parking close to Patel’s and there are police presence in this area. We loved reading your comment and sharing these memories with you. Sometimes just speaking of a place can bring back memories of those no longer with us. Even though it was a long time ago, we are impressed that you remember the names of these places so clearly. Both of us definitely have memories of Gobble and Go and Victory Lounge (which still exists in some suburbs. Pravin says he remembers GC Kapitan being a more ‘larnie’ place, lol. Hope we can share some Durban highlights with you so don’t miss it too much!
@@ordinarysouthafrican Next time I come to SA I'm walking through the City. I'll be careful , I miss Indians from South Africans - you don't know how different we are , sadly we don't fit in the world - only in SA. God bless you guys and South Africa.
I was raised in the area and attended school too in the area. The area was a haven for good food and sweet treats... There were a few good eating places example victory lounge. Bahgats Cafe... Then further down was west end known for their fish curry. Thank u for the wonderful memories.
Great video👍. I just accidentally happened upon your channel yesterday & have been binge-watching since. You guys are fun to watch & so down to earth. You've made me crave that moong-dholl bunny, but like you I rarely risk going into the city centre. All the best with your channel. Good ambassadors for Durban🙌
Hi guys.... Patel is da best veg bunny.... Everytime we goes durbs.. It's our first choice.. Hummy... Making me feel for it now.... Thank you for sharing...
Also and still a local . Great job guys on one of our last true icons of our city DURBAN OUR CITY IS DEAD THESE DAYS BUT WE HERE SHOUT OUT TO ALL THE GENERATIONS OF THIS WONDERFUL CITY PAST AND PRESENT PATELS THE BEST ORIGINAL ❤💯🇿🇦👍
Hi all subscribers and friends, I really enjoy this channel's videos. Informative and live experiences of the content. Keep up the great content and be always Blessed guy's 🙏🙏🙏👌👌👌
I know penda I make it for every diwali It has fresh cream Icing sugar A little of ghee Klim powder A very little of water to mix and mould Very rich beautiful sweet meat It has rosewater as well
Awesome job guys. Penda (pronounces as "Panda" as in panda bear) is a Gujarati sweetmeat in the Barfi family as you said. But a bit more dense and fudgey. Made only with milk solids, and flavoured with saffron and elachi.
Great stuff Guys...back in the 80s I recall myself and my Bangladesh homezy..had a tight Saturday schedule at durbs 😂😂😂town😅😅😅patels was always jammed packed..we used to sit an the huge metal open staircase at the back and eat..then kick it to movies..then butterworth..zoom..or Himalayas..then double up for the 6 and 7 KKs.aka Krishnas..Bus named Pretty Belinda ...or the Lawsons 3s bus Italion Stallion...or Lawsons Italion...only these 3 buses in chstsworth back then had the 1624 split turbo Engines...Best days of our lives..under 20 bucks maybe just 10 our entire sat sorted..from busfare chows bios jols and an aeroplane plane ride back home..which gave us a headline best selling story for our entire week😅😂😂❤❤❤
Yeah it was a vibe back in the day, thank you for sharing your memories. I’m from Chatsworth so I remember Krishna’s. Used to take the bus from town and jump off at unit 5 off-ramp just to enjoy the ride and the thumping music 😂.Thank you for watching and please don’t forget to subscribe to our channel 🫶🙏
Aaah mahn what memories are these.. it was Epic I'm from Merebank so we use to travel by bus to school. Lawson Italian Stallion was the ride back then. Thank you for taking me down memory lane😊
The moondhall bunny is my absolute favourite…please also try little Gujarat which is around the corner from Patels if you can. Their food is also extremely delicious and different and their laddoo is the best I’ve ever eaten. Adore you guys 🤗
Penda has been around quite a while, quite right burfee family, but made instantly, unlike traditional burfee which involves making a syrup. The creaminess comes from other ingredients n variations which could include condensed milk , fresh or desert cream among others
Hi my awesome couple yes dis is one of d at best veg restaurants i ever bee to.we i was in ML sultan teknikon in da 80 s i used to go der n buy my bunnies.even wen i moved away but i went back to buy der wen i was in Durban.i hv been to many veg outlets ..little gaugrat....RKs.. I'm from umlazi my dad used to take me to this place every chance we go to town and now I take my wife there she loves the Bunny chews and make sure you come early because on 2:00 they are closed and the bunnies are very cheap my favourite is sugar beans
I don't live there anymore, left 24 years ago. Never can forget the vegatble bunnies they dished out at Victory Louge in Grey St, Durban. Not forgetting some places in Clairwood. Visiting soon, do those places still exist.?
My friends ,there are dangers anywhere you go in the World. There are always miscreants watching to pounce on anything they could lay their hands on.Take care!
Bro I used to eat in that place when I was a litie, my parents used to go there I believe at that time it was an old Indian uncle that used to cook. I went there about a year ago and now some black guy is cooking the food don't taste the same and I saw a hell of a lot of............. Something and the guys don't use gloves😂
I worked at the Durban Housing Action Committee situated at Kara Centre... Patels was our go to place for delicious affordable bunnies and bhajias that our activist salaries allowed for... sadly our City Centre does not allow for safe shopping any more... will definitely nake a trip to town to get the Patels bunnies... what memories and experiences.
Thank you for sharing your memories. Took us a while to make the trip to the CBD for the safety reasons but I don’t regret it. However, don’t think I will make a shopping trip anytime soon. You won’t regret the trip to Patel’s.
The lady couldn't STOP talking AND eating ... just felt like putting duct tape over her mouth. I recall watching this channel's video years ago, once, and even then too I found her to be annoying. Either than that, good to know that the old favourite spots in Durban are still open and going strong with business

Hello Michelle , if the lady in the video annoys you, why are you watching it? Rather use duct tape to cover your eyes when you annoyed.
