I grew up playing a lot of games on handhelds, and one thing I always enjoyed about handhelds was the freedom they gave you. I don’t travel a lot personally, but I still like having a solution to take my games wherever I go and not being bound to a computer desk. I still play on my desktop, but I mostly use it for games that either don’t run very well on the Steam Deck or are just better suited for a desktop setup.

Having been a portable gamer since GameBoy (I'm 41), I bought the Steam Deck to play because I didn't have a dedicated PC and at the time, couldn't find a PS5. Fast forward now a couple years, I have a nice gaming PC that I do all my photo editing on, as well as gaming, and we finally got that PS5. My most use case at this point has been, just as you described; sitting on the couch while my wife watches a show or plays another game. When I travel, I always take the Steam Deck and my iPad mini, because I like reading, at it's my main ereader. So, it's not weird at all.
Perfect example: Last night I was playing my game on the PC. My wife came home. I grabbed the deck and sat on the couch and she watched a show. I get my gaming in and she doesn't sit there bored. It's really a great relationship tool... 😛

One of the only problems for me is not a deck issue, but a game issue. So many games have bad forms of drm that make playing a game offline impossible sometimes. Like, why do we need a wifi connection to boot up and play the story mode for need for speed, star wars, and call of duty? It's funny how you mentionned getting it in you backpack to meet up friends. I did just that, and it was great every time I did. It felt super natural to dock it on any TV or projector and then adding up my controllers or them and just launch small multilocal games. Just like old days when we played togeher. Overcooked, Stick fight, Ultimate Chicken horse and Castle Crasher were generally the favorite.

Using your portable device on the couch while you significant other (or kids, or whoever) is doing something on the TV is amazing. I got the PS Portal for that very purpose (literally sitting on the same couch where I'd play the PS5). That led to a G Cloud to also stream Xbox to retro handheld emulators, to, you guessed it, the Steam Deck.
This is also my #1 way of playing the deck. Cheers!

A lot of people on the internet recently are like "Oh well the Asus ROG Ally has way better specs and performance than the Steam Deck since this runs at 4k 120hz while your crappy steam deck runs at 4k 60hz🤓" But like literally no one cares cuz all you need is the comfortability and satisfaction that the steam deck provides for you. Last reason is so real. Introduced my gf to gaming via PS5 over the last 18 months. BG3 brought us a lottttt closer. But there’s just not that many great couch co-op games available on PS5. Got a Steam Deck and it just opened up a whole world of possibilities. We can still be side by side and play different games, or emulate PS2 and Wii games from our childhood for more couch co-op options, or even cross play games that let us play online together (we’ve currently been really enjoying WarFrame and Remnant 2, please lmk any suggestions you may have.)
    10/10 definitely Recommend

a really good way to use it is if your friend wants to play with you but you are at a spot where the other person doesn't have access to a pc and doesn't have a steam deck then you can use steam link and they can view your screen from their phone, then you can connect an external controller to the steam deck and give it to them (i do this with my friend alot and we play "a way out" which is a really good co-op game with an amazing story)

This was going to be the year that I finally built my first proper gaming PC, but I’ve been thinking about getting a Steam Deck instead. While I know I’d be getting much better performance with a desktop, the handheld capability is enough of an upside, for me personally, that I don’t mind the drawbacks.
I’ve played games on 9 fps at 800x600, in the past. I can live with getting “only” 30-40 in a game like Elden Ring. Especially if it means being able to play Elden Ring wherever I want.
