I was this close (actually ready to click purchase now button) to buying 512GB OLED but realized it's $780CAD... had to re-evaluate my financial situation (still not bought)
Going into desktop mode, changing the screen settings to turn off after a minute, you can download stuff and your deck's screen will turn off, saving power.
An easy tip for newcomers regarding the download. For that time period you are downloading games to make sure the screen doesn’t turn off, you can change the display settings to not turn off after x amount of time while on the charger. I set mine to never while on the charger ONLY while getting my biggest games downloaded and changed it back after. It’s a great way to make sure it doesn’t die or turn off while downloading, however if you get the oled the download times are just so much better so this might not even be an issue. Love the video man!
As far as storage is concerned, not only would I urge Steam Deck buyers to buy the biggest SD card they can, but also by the biggest 2230 SSD they can too. Not to mention, there are clip-on Steam Deck docks that have USB inputs, so you could also get some low-profile USB flash drives and use those for even more storage.
I think I'm gonna disagree with you on the dongle vs the official dock. In the footage, you showed someone using the deck as the controller and casting the footage to the tv, and while some people will prefer that, others will prefer to use a Bluetooth controller over the decks controls. Docking it to a monitor implies you're cool with having it turn into a console, and every console comes with a separate controller
Im a console gamer and my steam deck turns up this week, appreciate the tips as Im not p.c savvy and extra protection advice, I'm the same with every phone so saves me searching when you have dropped links to make life easier. Thanks.
You can download while having the screen off, it just has to be done in desktop mode and have the power cable plugged in all the while. If you go into desktop mode, go to settings, find energy saving, and select the "on ac power" tab. Set the dim screen and save energy to 1 minute. Now just put the charger in your steam deck, open steam in desktop, set up any downloads, and after 1 minute your screen will turn off while still downloading your games.
Here's something I recommend, immediately set up your desktop. Install Emu Deck and get some retro games running. You can have a bunch of old games taking up hardly any space and it doesn't take long to get them set up. Add the emulators as non-Steam games. Then go back to big picture mode, go to downloads and set it so the things can download in the background while games are running. Now you can play some old classic games while you're waiting for your PC games to download. Once you start playing PC games, you'll probably want to switch downloading while playing games back off.
I want a steam deck but OLED is a bit out of my budget. Is the LCD version ok? Or is it just better to save and spend the extra $150? I swear it feels divided between both. I don’t play much indie stuff. Want it for AAA and emulation
Do not buy the LCD. I just ordered an OLED yesterday. I did a bunch of research and the OLED is far superior in all aspects especially for AAA. It’s a bit more but you definitely won’t regret it according to every review.
i sold my LCD and have an oled now. i bought the 1tb, go with the 512. i didnt notice a difference in performance between the two when docked, but the oled is far superior in its hand held experience. the screen is just better all the way around, wifi is faster. the money you save over the 1tb you can put towards a 2tb drive.
The LCD is still the amazing steam deck that it was when it came out, the oled marginally improves a bit of everything and just mainly makes the screen a LOT better but ask your self this, how often will I use this, and do I even need the 500gb model, I already know all the games I'll be playing on this device and I have SD cards laying around that will happily hit 100Mb/s so i'm taking a 64gb model, I'll likely only be using this when i'm in bed, at a friends house, in transit, or at a hotel, which are all places I can charge the deck, scenarios where the OLED doesn't really get to swing its weight as much, however if this is a device you plan on using quite often as almost a PRIMARY device absolutely just save up for an OLED, you'll appreciate its little extras FAR more than you would if you're going to be using this irregularly like me
Great tips! I have had my Steam Deck for a few months now and LOVE it! The Steam Deck has to be one of the most consumer friendly portable gaming devices out there in addition to being a great gaming value. Thanks again and Merry Christmas and Happy New Year everyone!
Great tips, but it would also be helpful to put the names of the games you're showing gameplay of if they're featured on the screen. Some of the games looked interesting but I have no idea what games they were. I'm sure the devs would love it also!
This guy is so right about the steamdeck dock. It is a huge pain in the ass to set up and has a bunch of annoying issues with some tv (like mine. I have to unplug the stupid thing from the wall every time I want the HDMI to actually work).
This was fantastic. Thanks for putting out these vids in the deck. You’re touching on all the topics that I would want to know about ahead of purchasing one of these.
I think a good benefit is a lot of older titles are on Steam go pick up Fallout 3 Mad Max that generation of games is great on the steam deck the battery life is phenomenal I'm talking about getting AAA games from 360 games
I ordered the etched-glass Steam Deck. Considering I never scratched any screen of any device I ever owned in my 33 years on this planet Earth, I feel pretty confident to have been raised right as to handle valuable things cautiously. So I will not get a screen protector. I have the case for that purpose. Yes yes, i knoooow, accidents can happen. But how come it's only always the same people from my circle of acquaintances who have cracked phone screens then? Because most damage comes from improper use, not unpreventable accidents ;)
I got a cheap little hub that clips on to the back of mine. It's small and light and while it only has a power passthrough, HDMI, and 2 USB-A's, for sub $20 it's been a lovely little way of getting my games onto a TV or transferring data on and off. It even has a kickstand! Point is that you don't need to get the ones he recommended but something that gives you HDMI, and at least one USB if not a couple is going to be desired eventually.
Upgrading the internal SSD is very easy, but the part that worried me was reimaging the Steam OS to that SSD. I finally found 2 videos that Sabrient put out (one for SSD install and one for the OS - ua-cam.com/video/WJW99n5bPNM/v-deo.html). I now have a 1tb 2230 in the deck along with three 512mb microSD cards (I like having LOTS of options.....).
I have an question about the battery or system of the steam deck overheating I play my game on the steam and after maybe 2 hours or so the deck freezes and I have to get an hard reset on the power button. Is there something to use to prevent it from getting too hot?
This is a good video. A really good one. But guys, please don't spend $130 on a dock. There are docks literally half this price that have all these ports.
Have noticed rhat having the cord connected has led to the USB C port gotten abit "bent" Sure i can fix it, but i think it is a weak spot for the deck. Looking for a magnetic sollution maybe
Also keep in mind that there are unofficial versions of Proton. If your game is struggling it could be a Linux compatibility issue. Try all the versions of Proton including the current beta to see if they work then if they don't, carefully look around online for unofficial versions, which tend to optimize in different directions. Thinking to get 512 gb oled but have some concerns. So there is still a chance for Thumb stick drift ? Also a bit concerned about the dead pixels and headphone jack issues. Are the new batch of steam decks have less issues that i mentioned ?
I have on,y had my OLED for ONE day so take what I say lightly but, from what I understand, stick drift will always be possible. But, I hear that Valve makes it easy to open it up and replace each stick. And as for your other concerns, you can always just return it and place another order if that is an issue. But mine seems to be perfect out of the box and I've had a blast playing Lethal Company and CSGO2 so far. I'm a console gamer and I got it to be my first "pc" and it is great in docked mode. I plugged in an apple Magic Keyboard I had laying around and a cheap mouse I had and it works like a dream
How long was your hdmi cable from the TV to that couch? 😮 I understand long charge cable, I have plenty of those, but most of my hdmi cables just barley reach the console sitting right underneath the TV itself. 😢
Bro the dongle is bad just get the steam dock it has 3 usb ports a displayport an hdmi porn an usb c port and another built in cable that sits in your steam deck and connect a ps4 controller or some other controller, its more comfortable than using the steam deck itself. Also regarding the sd card i reccomend that you install windows on it cause then you both have linux desktop mode, the big screen steam mode, and the windows desktop.

Thank you for responding, I did a bit of research online and there seems to be an agreement on not getting a screen protector for the etched glass version. I will be leaving it on the case whenever I'm done playing anyways so I think I should be fine
Steamdeck OLED already covers most of the points raised in this video, e.g. storage capacity, battery life, charger cable length... anyone with a base model LCD Steamdeck would be way better off just selling it and upgrading to OLED instead of buying accessories.
Question for you SD owners.... I have a Switch OLED and enjoy it for Nintendo only titles. I play it 99.9% of the time docked with the Pro Controller. the deck not allowing downloads while sleeping is a major fatal flaw imo considering burn in exists (and Burn in is VERY easily testable for a company so they know it happens). I was disappointed that in sleep mode you cant see the battery level. Give me a short cut or something in sleep mode where it flashes the battery level once. like phones how you can tap screen or tap button. you don't have to power into the device every time you wanna just check the battery level when charging. @@sam.alexander.reviews nah the 2d side scroller. Geezer like a samurai. Looks good... And I found soulstone cause of you. Getting on that. Thanks for the reply.
I got the Ugreen 13 in 1 dongle in the vid and it’s not casting to my monitor and it seems to make the steam deck screen turn on and off. Thoughts on how to possibly fix?
Wow i never thought someone would use it so heavy as a “switch” and multiplayer device. In my head steam deck buyers are people who already have a half decent gaming pc and don’t meet up with RL friends to play games that don’t own at least their own gaming system to play with friends. I wonder how i will use mine when it arrives this week. Good thing I already have a usb hub with 1 hdmi 1 power delivery and 1 usba. That does the trick along with my gaming pc.
Let me tell you, through my own actions my steam deck oled fell on concrete from a few ft up, and the screen was SPOTLESS. There were marks on my L1, and on the casing both front, and back. Not the screen though, not one scratch
also you should have put the internal storage further up in the list unless they already had a 512 or a 1tb because when you change the internal storage its faster speeds for gaming instead of the micro sd card maxing out to 100 and you get the full experience of the game
If you're a pc player and don't own an xbox - buying an xbox controller isn't necessarily the best because it either needs to be plugged in or you need the xbox wireless pc adapter - playstation you don't need this is just goes through bluetooth if it's a ps4 or 5 controller
@@rustemakhmet I meant if you want to play wirelessly you need the adapter. It's totally up to you as to which controller you want to use I personally prefer ps4/5 as I can use them through Bluetooth out of the box without an adapter. But it's totally up to you which one you use
I cannot, for the life of me, get my XBOX series S controller to connect. It just keeps toggling between connecting, and paired but never goes connected. I have the OLED one (not sure if that matters).
When you are using the UGREEN Revodok Pro 313 with the steam deck, do you have to plug the short type c that comes with the dongle into the steam deck or can I just run a separate type c between the dongle and the steam deck and have it work?
@@sam.alexander.reviews I have a 10 foot cable that says it's 60w so I assume it would be fine. In my experience, to play my steam deck on the tv from the couch I have to have a really long HDMI cable to reach the couch that gets plugged into the UGREEN. Then I need a power cable for the UGREEN thats long enough to plug into the wall, and then the short 8" usb-c that comes out of the end of the UGREEN and goes into the steam deck. Unfortunately, this seems to be the only way it works on the TV. My hope was I have the hub and I just run my 10' usbc to my steam deck and done. Sadly, doesn't seem to work.
@@DaneRosselliI don't have a ugreen, but I just wanted to say there's a difference between a data cable and a charging cable. A data cable can charge, but a charging cable can't transfer data, so maybe your extra long cable is charging only. Hopefully this might be useful info to you or someone else.
So does this mean with my 1TB OLED I basically shouldn’t protect it unless I’m fine with a decrease in screen performance ? I just ordered the OLED and I will be playing solely at home anyway so might be truly better to not use protection 😅?

I was disappointed that in sleep mode you cant see the battery level. Give me a short cut or something in sleep mode where it flashes the battery level once. like phones how you can tap screen or tap button. you don't have to power into the device every time you wanna just check the battery level when charging. Make it sound like I hate it. I really love it ik im just tech spoiled. the software will catch up to what we are use to ig.
What game were you playing at 3:30
soulstone survivor :)
Bro why u saying congratulations like I just had a kid 💀
Why are the bezels smaller in the thumbnail?
Just got mine yesterday been playing non stop since 256gb version
Does the keyboard come with the mouse or are they sold separately?
sold separately
Ok I was recommended the same brand mouse on Amazon so I bought that as well
whats that first game u played?
Soulstone Survivors
I have the 1TB with etched glass and honestlyit doesn’t really stop glare that much
with glossy screen protector he measn UHD right instead of the matte?
the same sd card he got is the one thats shipping to my house XD i already bought the same one he got and thanks for all the info man
You can hookup a lan cable with a dongle for faster download speed then wi-fi
What's the main game you are playing in the vid with the sword play?
top down 3rd person? soulstone survivors!
@@sam.alexander.reviews nah the 2d side scroller. Geezer like a samurai. Looks good... And I found soulstone cause of you. Getting on that. Thanks for the reply.
@@TT-xm3vqthat was Elden Ring
Emudeck? I have a lot of Wii U roms
Idk how anybody wouldn’t have a microSD card lol. That’s wild. Good video mate.
because i installed a 2TB SSD
i wanna get the 2 tb SSD so bad... i dont need it. i dont need it.
I got a 2TB installed and a 512GB for my roms and emulation. So dope.
I have watched hundreds of videos about the Steam Deck and this is one of the most useful. Great content, thanks!
Let me tell you, through my own actions my steam deck oled fell on concrete from a few ft up, and the screen was SPOTLESS. There were marks on my L1, and on the casing both front, and back. Not the screen though, not one scratch
also you should have put the internal storage further up in the list unless they already had a 512 or a 1tb because when you change the internal storage its faster speeds for gaming instead of the micro sd card maxing out to 100 and you get the full experience of the game
what game wee you playing at the end of your video? 14:50
dead cells!
Why is the TV almost at the ceiling?
If you're a pc player and don't own an xbox - buying an xbox controller isn't necessarily the best because it either needs to be plugged in or you need the xbox wireless pc adapter - playstation you don't need this is just goes through bluetooth if it's a ps4 or 5 controller
You don't need an adapter to connect the Xbox controller to Steam Deck and PC as well. Actually, the PS4 controller is a bad choice for PC gaming.
@@rustemakhmet I meant if you want to play wirelessly you need the adapter. It's totally up to you as to which controller you want to use I personally prefer ps4/5 as I can use them through Bluetooth out of the box without an adapter. But it's totally up to you which one you use
@@jamiemarshall4738 Yes, I understood what you meant. You don't need an adapter to connect the Xbox controller via Bluetooth.
I cannot, for the life of me, get my XBOX series S controller to connect. It just keeps toggling between connecting, and paired but never goes connected. I have the OLED one (not sure if that matters).
When you are using the UGREEN Revodok Pro 313 with the steam deck, do you have to plug the short type c that comes with the dongle into the steam deck or can I just run a separate type c between the dongle and the steam deck and have it work?
as long as the type c cable can do high speed data, it should be fine, i haven't tested that for myself though so i cant guarantee it
@@sam.alexander.reviews I have a 10 foot cable that says it's 60w so I assume it would be fine.
Jasux do a etched screen protector you can't even see. Also. They do a great case
JSAUX
The 1tb already comes with a sort of screen protector, I have one it actually works great
What is the game at 0:31?
I just downloaded Red Dead 2 on my 1tb Deck, and it was about 120 gigs...insane
Like half the video was an ad. I like Ugreen and all, but damn.
Could i use the 65w ugreen plug to charge the deck
yup!
@@sam.alexander.reviews i just got the oled 1tb steam deck and want to put sd card in it, would this card be ok. Lexar PLAY 1TB microSDXC UHS-I-Card, Up To 150MB/s Read, Compatible-with Nintendo-Switch, Portable Gaming Devices, Smartphones and Tablets U3 A2, thankyou for any help in advance.
Can you please do the “Download games in sleep mode on Deck”. Really need that, thx!
I try to wait a year before I play a title. It makes it cheaper and the games are much more stable.
i think that you won't need decky, because valve added some new stuff when the oled steam deck released so you canright out of the box change the settings of saturdation rgb and other stuff
Don't use "joysticks adapters". Idk why he didn't say that, but you will not be able to use gyro with these adapters on. When you just place your finger on a joystick, gyro is turning on
good point i should have included that!
i dont use gyro too much so i didn't notice
I got 1tb, screen protector works exactly the same
So no steam deck screen protector for 1b steam deck?
eh, up to you, i'd probably risk it
