Fun fact, going from 11W to 15W get you very little FPS performance but use almost 50% more battery. Try to limit TDP to 11W and you might be surprised how well it plays

@@dawncyclist Press 3 little dots bottom right of steam deck and you can find it in the settings from there. You'll have to turn on TDP first before you can lower it. PS: I usually set in game settings to 720 and turn on FSR in the same settings as the TDP/FPS. It still makes the game look crisp and can get a little boost in performance (FPS).

The reason why the temperatures and battery life are so much better than their lcd counterparts is because of the change from 7nm to a smaller 6nm process of transistors. 6nm is much more efficient because not only is it the same tech in a smaller package, the die/cores are also smaller, meaning they produce less heat, leading to lower temps. That, and the entire mainboard and cooling system was rehauled. Smaller transistors also mean less travel times for electrons and therefore less loss of energy (stacks up over millions of transistors), leading to longer battery life. That, plus battery increasing by 50% makes for a heck of a lot more longevity in battery. Just a couple of tidbits that explain why you were getting the results you were. Nice video! Liked that you tested performance with benchmarks yet also included a lot of user experience with it.

It looks nice but as someone that got spoiled with the aggressive pricing at 350 dollars for the LCD 64gb version back when I got it almost two years ago 550+ dollars seems a bit steep when we are talking about 5-7 extra FPS. The battery life and screen seems nice though. I would consider it if I did not have the LCD but it does not really seem like that big of an upgrade to me from the LCD considering the price increase. When we are talking that price range then yes, we will have to bring the competitors in because now we are in the same price range but worse performance. The LCD was so cheap so you kind of expected the performance to be lower.

And elden ring runs just fine 40fps with limited tdp.. Eldenring runs 2 hours 50min +/-10min depending where you roam in the game.

I ended up choosing the SD Oled over an ROG Ally even though I debated between the two for like 9 months or so. The Steam Deck just has that Valve branding on it and they have been doing a fantastic job supporting their own hardware for 3 years now. I trust them more than Asus or Lenovo when it comes to the long-term ownership of these expensive devices. Things such as drivers and hardware optimizations are what I look for as I don't intend on upgrading any handheld system no sooner than 3-4 years. I already own a fairly high end gaming PC so if I absolutely need those 120 frames for some game I can do that.

  • @AlecsLee

I would change the reasons you have exposed for choosing the deck or other handheld pc, because with the deck you can play the same games as the others in 99% of the cases, so that can't be the point.
The strong ponts of the deck are :
    - Best efficiency and performance at low tdp.
    - Best battery life because of point 1.
    - Best user console like experience, by far.
    - Best customer service.
    - Best price/performnace ratio.
    - Better screen.
    And the others:
    - More powerfull (but only at 20tdp or high, wich means 45mins to 1.30h of battery life).
    - More native compatibility with anticheat games because windows.
    - The VRR of the ally.
So, only if you are seeking for the higher fps you can get, and din't care about battery life, and don't mind using windows in a hanheld, or you play mostly multiplayers with anticheat, then choose any of the others. In any other sceneario, choose the deck oled.

Love my OLED. Bought Steam Deck LCD on day 1, and I fell in love with it so much that I knew right then that if they ever make a refresh or a Steam Deck 2, I'll buy it on launch as well. Did so with the OLED, and I can't get enough of it. It's a great device that offers a fantastic, console-like experience but also allows you to scratch that tinker itch whenever you feel like it. As for performance - I set mine up with Moonlight running from my main gaming PC, so when something doesn't work well on the SD, I can just stream it via Moonlight on that beautiful OLED screen (with full HDR support!). MoonDeck plugin lets me run games this way with just one click of a button, and it even works over the Internet - like my own, personal GeForce Now, only it's on better hardware, for free, and I can play every game I own, not just those supported by the service.

Got myself an OLED a few days ago, and i am glad i didn't go for the LCD as my friend recommended since she said the differences were minimal.
Sure there might be others that are better by now, but I was kinda curious of the Steam OS and didn't really wanted another Windows device, nothing against windows, but some recent features are just annoying.
But what sold me the most was Valves Cooperation with iFixit. I love to repair my stuff myself, and knowing that i can get new spare parts easy is a huge plus for me. I rarely heard anything like that from the other devices. I kinda hate it to send my devices to the seller or producer and to wait two or more weeks to get it repaired, just because i can't get the parts anywhere or only dodgy part from shady sellers that might break again but faster. If you buy it can repair it yourself, you should at least have the possibilities to do so.

I think one thing that gives the OLED its longevity is the capability to stream HDR on the screen, basically the added benefit of a PS Portal that runs HDR streaming from PS, Xbox, or PC. This reason alone disregards the machines limitation when its hardware can't run the latest game. I just finished part of FF16 and Stellar blade on the steam deck. Mind you, you will need a pretty fast wifi connection.

    • @CaptainEffort
      @CaptainEffort 5 місяців тому +1

To add to the other content, yeah, it’s about what games you play.
If you primarily play multiplayer games with anticheat, like Fortnite, CoD, or Destiny, then go with the Legion since those games aren’t compatible with Linux.
If you primarily play AA games, older AAA’s, indies, or emulate, go with the Deck, as you’ll get far more battery life when playing less demanding titles than the competition does. Keep in mind that AAA’s can be played on both. The Legion will perform better, but at a fraction of the battery life, so it depends on what you prioritize.
Some extra things to keep in mind:
I wouldn’t recommend the Legion unless you’re okay being tethered to a wall most of the time.
Windows is quite a bit rougher than SteamOS on a handheld. I’d recommend always having a keyboard/mouse nearby.
The lack of trackpads may make some of your library incompatible with the Legion. At least in handheld mode.
No quick resume on the Legion. By that I mean you can’t turn off the system and open it back up in the same spot seamlessly. Not a dealbreaker, but something to keep in mind.

One thing that stand out from your video review 6 month review was when you said that you don't want to lower settings to save on battery life. You want to play it on everything Max best performance best visuals and that's how I see it. I want to take out the best of the best of this device if I'm at home and I'm near a wall outlet and I just want to play on handheld mode. I just plug it in and play everything at its highest possible settings. If I'm on the going. I know I'm doing battery life. I just pop open a emulator game or a low battery draining indie game that's still fun to play and won't eat up my battery life. Great review to just earn a sub

and battery life is still relative right? so sure you could increase the LCD's battery life by adjusting settings but you can ALSO increase the OLED's battery life by doing the same things, so in your test of one hour compared to 2 hours, if you adjusted settings on both devices you might go from 2 hours compared to 4 hours, its awesome! love the deck, great video

You know, for 3 years, the Steam Deck 64GB original, upgraded to a 2TB NVME, was my go to hand held for gaming. The power port began to fail on it then, forcing me to either send it off for a referb, or to buy a new machine. Last month, I bought an Asus Rog Ally Z1 Extreme. I thought, well, I have tried the Steam Deck. Why not try the Ally? My Steam Deck is now in the cupboard. For thing's like RPCS3, the Z1 Extreme is a much more powerful system. I imagine that the Steam Deck 2 will be comparable to the Z1 Extreme, when it is released in about 2026. If you think about it, there are only so many upgrades that Valve can make, and most of them are already visible on the Z1 Extreme.
