I apologise if I cause any offence. That isn't my intention. Is the audio *a single unedited take?* If it is, maybe make the description clearer. "All parts played simultaneously on one acoustic guitar" seems to leave ambiguity. The video looks like 4 takes plus drone. I assume the audio was recorded in a studio, and the video is mimed. No disrespect meant, but this feels a bit 'over staged', like some 'Marcin' videos. Otherwise - BRILLIANT! 👏
Best Wishes. ☮
Yes, it is. The audio is from the CD. Played on one guitar means, that there are not two guitars in the audio and the drums are not recorded seperatally. He plays it live with no playback. Hope it helps. Cheers Lars.
Just pre-ordered your vinyl. Your a legend brother
Stellar❤

Consistently showing Dawes is the pinnacle of acoustic guitar artistry.
He is damn good. That's it.
Mike Dawes is a terrific player! check out kent nishimura, his talent at arraignment may be unmatched.
Marcin
I'm not putting this man down - I wish I could play like him.
But if you want want someone who could be classified as "pinnacle of acoustic guitar artistry", I think Marcin is up in the stratosphere while us mortals are standing on the crust. If you haven't already, you need to see some Marcin - even if modern-classical isn't your jam I'm sure you'd appreciate his prodigal talents.
@@lup1up Marcin is the best.
That's a very quiet waterfall
I’ll upload the live audio sometime. Sounds like SSSHGFGFHGSSSDGFGGHSSSS
@@mikedawesofficial the asmr version!
The waterfall had such awesome respect for this piece that it turned its own volume way down!
This was my initial thought too hahah.
🤣🤣🤣 I was thinking the same thing
Maybe Mike is the best acoustic player of this generation. His technique is is beyond amazing, paired with a great sense of musicality and dynamics.
Not to mention that this version here is best possible to imagine as pure acoustic solo interpretation. Fantastic.
Beautiful Mike ♥️🫶🏻💙🌊🌊
Epic! Simply epic!
So cool seeing your trailer and then the finished video. The camera crew really knocked it out of the park! Fantastic backdrop for an emotive groove.
I’d really miss that this was supposed to be watchtower had I not read the title, it’s got some very nice motifs though! Awesome job!
3:23 to 3:43, it's so beautiful my ears are melting.
First time i see the place took me off instead of your playing OMG
Mile 3 running then tapestry and smacking starts..okay 3 more.
I was lucky enough to see Hedges play this twice live. I like that this is close enough to be an homage but different enough to be something new.
Extremely jealous. I'm glad you like the homage
I also thought of Hedges and to me no one else has played it as inspiringly until now.
I saw both guitarrists: Michael Hedges in the eighties and Mike last year live in Germany. Michael played as support of Suzanne Vega!
He was phantastic and I think Mike is right the same in his own way of playing acoustic music, a gifted musician!
I was also lucky enough to see Hedges twice in Baltimore. The last time was within a few weeks of his passing. RIP.
I'm enjoying @mikedawesofficial's Truefire content and hoping to see him next time he's through these parts.
Me too! Exactly right description.
Brilliant artist and entertainer. Physically, I've never seen anyone with hands the size of Michael Jordan AND with 7 joints per finger--or so it seems. Cannot imagine the amount of talent and pure hard work it takes to pull off half of what Mr. Dawes does.
As a videographer and musician, I can see how much hard work and dedication went into making this. Absolutely stunning! Thank you!
Yeah, man. It's a beautiful setting but looks cold as hell. I'm out. 🤣👍🏼
@@ddelacruz 😆
Been wating for this since you did the little showcase on Rick's channel. IM IN LOVE YOU KILLED IT MIKE.
That’s why it seemed familiar somehow!! Thank you. I was wracking my brain trying to remember. I knew no one else would done it. Relief. Thank you.
Bro same! So hyped for thos
He’s more than a guitarist! He’s a guitARTIST!!
...nice ❤!
he makes me feel guiTARDED
@@hilla42that's exactly what I was thinking.
Strong Micheal Hedges vibes...
And I'm writing this with all due respect and admiration.
Simply stunning.
I heard Michael straight away - amazing, I still have this Michael Hedges CD. Such memories with the slaps and harmonics - beautiful!
Michael would have loved it ❤, cheers, Lars
Before arthritis ruined my hands I played guitar in college in the coffee house. I played because it made my spirit feel lighter. Now, I listen to the likes of you half a century later, and I feel like I did in college. Thank you ❤
You know how good a video is by how many times you re-watch it in a row and im already on #5... still not getting old yet...This rocks!
Thank you ❤
huh --- I will be listening to this for decades ---- if not until i hit the dirt--- since i was around when the first version hit the streets ! ! * -- Oorah ---- JAFO
Good memories of our Bristol world tour hangs!
Love the vid and the song, the album is gonna be a real banger 👑
Cheers mate. This was cold to film. Almost Russia cold.
@@mikedawesofficial Russia on Ice? Wait... wrong artist reference... my bad.
This is a perfect interpretation of Michael Hedges version (which I love)
I have been waiting since the Rick Beato interview for an official recording of this!
Thank you so much Mike!
Man, the response from that video is why I recorded this! Thank you
@mikedawesofficial I was one of the comments requesting an official recording haha!
Thanks again, you absolute legend!
Once in a lifetime video . The acoustic guitar video of the year
Interesting. I’m a massive fan of the song and of Mike and yet I found it a bit underwhelming
Every notification from your channel is an instant click. Giving us the opportunity to connect with whats alive in you is absolutely divine Mike, keep em comin!
What an azz-kick'n way to wake up & start our Friday morning! Awesome, unique arrangement- and we even have the Watchtower Sentinels standing guard in the surf.
This is Mike Dawe's version of a Michael Hedges version of a Jimi Hendrix version of a Bob Dylan song. I think
( o : -- : o )
first time I ever heard Hedges was in person (1985); he started his set with this song, and afterwards remarked about it being "Bob Dylan by way of Jimi Hendrix." :)
I hear shades of both Hedges and Hendrix in Mike's arrangement (with a little nod to Dave Mason, who played the iconic 12-string part on Hendrix's track). But the end result is absolutely a Dawes edition (and a brilliant one).
Can't think of a better place for him to film this. Iceland.
Stunning place
There are many great songs in this world but if im only allowed to listen to one for the rest of my life it is this one! Absolutely brilliant, doesnt get old. The definition of a masterpiece! Thanks Mike, you are for sure one of the greatest musicians to ever walk on this planet!
Yes sir! I melted 🫠
Brought a tear to my eye. Incredible music, connecting to the deepest seat of one’s soul. Thank you for your wonderful creation and inspiring us fellow musicians 🙏
Wow, thank you!
Long-time Hedges superfan and emulator of his music on guitar….this was awesome. Thanks for doing this.
Not the first time, I hear this song from an A.Cuntz guitar but my dad can also sing, while playing. Everyone check out Lars Hildebrandt :P I'm joking, as always amazing play Mike! Awesome scenery aswell! Stunned
😂😂❤❤
I was too young to be able to follow Michael Hedge's career but I can be content knowing that his amazing legacy has never died... and his spirit lives on
🔥Mike🔥"Torched" performance🔥Michael Hedges' word "Torched": a state of heightened physical/spiritual awareness, he aspired to and worked toward, a state of being "on fire" with an all-consuming creative life-energy.🔥"It’s all in whether you mean what you are playing. That is what soul is. " "i’m not working on my guitar with my fingers. i’m working on my being, trying to expand it through music." - Michael Hedges
Jimmy would approve.
Ah Bob would too. Jimmy was a cover.
Jimi
@@nathancanaan102 I can't believe I made that mistake. Thank you good sir, I am corrected.
@@1DansBlues How true, I never associate the song to Dylan as it's Jimi's cover that I know. Have to look up Dylan's version.
Look up Michael Hedges version!
Gorgeous music as expected. I still hear some of Michael Hedges's version in Yours, Mike. And I like the excursions You go on from there.
Yes, very good tribute to MH ❤. I think it is the same tune MD uses. Cheers, Lars.
That's a true musician man one who makes their own style
I'd quit guitar and take up percussion, but he's got me beat at that too 🥴
Dude! It's awesome. I felt that vibe all over my body!🤘
Michael hedges smiling on this guy
Incredible version, Mike. Saw you play with Justin at that converted church in Manhattan twice, and loved every minute of those shows.
Good memories coming back with this video, but what magic did you use to tape it in Reynisfjara (black-sand beach) and Skógafoss? :D
When I visited iceland 2 years ago in February (winter) both places were overgrowded
And if possible, visit Estonia turing your tour.
Surrounding every shot, just out of frame, no joke, seas of tourists.
Mike, this is great but it sure makes me miss Michael Hedges.
This must have been a heck of a challenge. Amazing. And 6 minutes off the press. Best journey home from work in a long time.
Lovely! Yes my hands were so numb by the end of this, and the poor guitar was soaked! I'll post some BTS soon
I saw the great Michael Hedges 3 times in concert. It's not a competition. It's all beautiful. Go Mike.
Thanks man
@@mikedawesofficial Just realized that could sound different from what I meant which is that... music is not a competition.😁 You and Hedges and Tibbets and Kaki are all in my playlist! Cheers!
Michael Hedges (RiP), look at what your trailblazing has brought forth...I literally burst into tears.
The incomparable Mike Daws' monumental solo instrumental rendition of the most darkly dangerous, frieghtning, poignant, and eternally true 12 lines of Rock 'N Roll poetry.
As true today as when Dylan adapted them, then Hendix magically wailed them all those years ago; delivered with today"s fresh ugency, within a sublime harmonic sensibility, as only Mike Daws can.
This, is as good as it gets folks; Truly.
Bravo!
Cheers y'all 🍻
Three cords and the truth ❤.
WOW! And yes......I feel the Michael Hedges vibes, too! Thanks Mike Dawes!
Iceland? Visited all of these locations in the video a few years back. What an experience. Phenomenal playing as usual!
Nice version sounds inspired by Michael Hedges version. I love it.
That's epic for length of play, and genius for interpretation and adaptation in ways that keep the soul of the song intact (Jimi's version).
Dylan> Hendrix> Hedges> Dawes....all great versions.
The wind keeps howling.
Don't forget TSOL #deepcuts. :)
🕊
Let's go! Awesome video 👌🔥
Cheers mate, your tunes are wicked
Mike you blow my mind every time, mate! You're my biggest musical inspration. Always looking forward to the next masterpiece you play
Michael Hedges would be happy to hear your music... ❤
How to hydrate your guitar 😂
Great playing 🤟🏼
Immediately thought Micheal Hedges, no doubt he would be very impressed with your performance, it was amazing 👍
Hi Mike, You’ve done it again. You’re a master of percussive finger style guitar. There couldn’t be any doubt about that.
Love it. Thx
I never heard of this guitarist until about 5 minutes ago and am blown away. I have been playing guitar since 1959 and truly love all forms of acoustic guitar music and I wonder if he uses standard tuning.
This one is in the Michael Hedges super cool and self-chorusing DAEEAA
Stunning Music, Stunning Location, Stunning Execution. I've told the husband it's time to order the new album.
Wow, thank you!
Thank you for this amazing Concert tonight in Dresden.
It was a unbelievabel experience.
Thank you so much…
lovely rich playing with a beautiful percussive element and excellent left hand control delivering nice, tasteful, juicy tones.
Poor guitar, it was probably trashed after the shooting.
No, still working 😂.
Oh my, this is sooo good!
Reminds me a lot of Michael Hedges' version. Very well done.
Absolutely fantastic - and your recorded sound is so spot on. Today’s the first time I’ve heard and discovered you - brought back vibes and memories of The Lewes Guitar Festival (England) mid 2000s, seeing the late Eric Roche, Thomas Leeb and Tommy Emmanuel, plus others.
Superb!!! I have loved this song since I heard Michael Hedges' rendition for the first time (RIP Michael). Jimi Hendrix made something beautiful, and all this time later, people still rewrite it and cover it... it's a wonder to hear. Also, Mike, I am digging your current style (as of 3 months ago)!
Beautifull. I am wondering what are the strings you use? Thanks
Michael would approve ❤
Great tribute to Hedges. Forgot how well he rocks that song. Can’t wait for your new album.

why are there so many notes?
Bro I’ve already said this but I’m going to say it again YOU SHOULD NOT BE HERE YET!! You play like an alien. But still, I’m going to learn this master piece, then I’m going to master a new and improved version. Yes I know, this a serious challenge but still I will take it. It will take some time I know. But when I’ve mastered it I will come looking for you. I maybe old and grey but as long as I’m able to play it’s all good, then I will give you the play back. What an awesome track. Look out for me, I’m coming. 👊🏿Spek!
man ever since Mike played this on rick beato I was hoping for a full version.
Mesmerizing... Epic... Grandiose... The greatest song writer of all time, the most inventive acoustic player ever, from what looks to be the most 'special' locations on the planet! Is this the greatest performance ever? IMHO, it might be. Bravo!
Love it! The rythmic taps, slaps, strums and pickin'!
Hey, please remind me to amp you! Were refining our Productuon prototype as we speak (digitally speaking) ;)
Thanks for your great inspirng music! AcoustaMan-Don
Salve "Mestre!" sempre é maravilhoso ouvi-lo!
Obrigado mais uma vez por partilhar seu talento e alegrar minha noite aqui no Brasil...
Vida Longa e Próspera repleta de realizações!
🖖🙏
Michael Hedges cover... well done
Great cover of "Closer" by The Chainsmokers!
"So, baby, pull me closer
In the back seat of your Rover
That I know you can't afford
Bite that tattoo on your shoulder"
Sir 😊 iam in love with this new song ❤️
Yeah nah ye, a bit too arty and monochrome for me, far too much going on, to enjoy the playing?
hard to find or even hear, the melody, amongst all the tapping, frapping, scratching, and banging
Brilliantly talented as Mike is, this is a miss for me. "Less Is More" springs to mind
Or, the phrase, Just because we can, doesn't always mean we should
Nicely executed. But unless you are someone from the classic rock era, it is just a nice little tune "outside in the cold distance"... Bob Dylan songs are all about the lyrics. And if you don't know them, what do you have? 😮 Even the masterful Hendrix version is just a vehicle to transport the lyrics.
Just came back from playing at a gig, it was good but not that which fills my heart or I wanna be like the guitarist someday. Checked Instagram, found Mike's new video. Refreshed my mind again
This man, that guitar, how to put it into words. They are one. And those natural harmonics tossed in so effortlessly….
That was sensational Mike! I haven't hit the play button that fast in a while.
It must have been very early or very late when you did the waterfall and black sand beach.... No tourists in the background 😂
Icelandic cold and steel strings..... Im feeling sorry for those hands of yours 👏
Very nice 👌 The backdrops were a little too much, distracting and out of context for the piece, though. Thank you, Mike...
Awesome video Mike and a wonderful arrangement and performance of one of my favorite songs.
Beautiful composition! I was spellbound man. I loved. Well done man.
Você é o melhor de todos os meus 75 anos de ouvir. Você está muito fora da curva, você é único😎. A música acústica ganhou vida e conquista admiradores da boa música.
It sounds like someone playing guitar down the hallway. I’m no audiophile/ or sound engineer=But I feel like the mix could be better.
man, I have been in both place that you filmed, rewatch the beauty of Iceland while listening your music was an intense experience, thank you
Great job! Being from the PNW, let me just add it must have been cold AF during filming!! But beautiful!
Yep, being worried about the guitar. All the locations seem super moist. Getting anxiety from this must be normal, right? 😅
When guitar meets Tourettes...very nice sounding guitar. I saw your video where you talked about the making of it and the Mic configuration. Cool stuff. Great playing and beautiful setting.
Have you sent this to a Mr Robert Zimmerman? That was some rendition of this song. BTW where did you film this Mike?
It’s a beautiful version of the song, but it’s a bit tough to distinguish that it’s “All Along the Watchtower”
History awaits Mike Gates and Mike Walls (I'll get my coat)
Pretty badass brother!!! I can only imagine how many times you had to play that in different spots and deal with the weather to get all of that put together. Very cool location and the production and editing was top notch. Love it!!!! Oh ,and Bob and I were born on the same day!! (not the same year though 🤣🤣🤣🤣)
I saw him live at a Periphery show. he's crazy with the playing and tapping/ slapping
My toxic trait is thinking that I could easily learn this
Same here… 😆
and then quitting it after a few days of trying…🙈
Thanks for another great video. This is one of my favourite arrangements that you've done so far. Been listening to that performance on the Rick Beato channel many times. The whole time I was watching this I couldn't stop thinking about all that moisture and how it might affect the guitar. haha.
i am still waiting a Neural dSP Archetype mike Dawes or least a Neural DSP acousticS Guitar plug-in or and Bass guitar
