But, well, not quite "but" your ability to do that IS exactly what jamming is about! Turning on the proverbial dime is what makes you a great person to jam with!
I saw Tommy jamming with an extraordinary harpist at the HK Foreign Correspondent's Club one night, mostly on her pieces, and he was MAGNIFICENT. So, was she, but by God, if he didn't hang on to the "dragon's tail" and climb up to the neck of the beast that she was, well, you weren't there, but let me assure you Tommy Emmanuel is an absolute mofo. They "topped" each other throughout the entire set. Amazing performance by both! ❤🎉❤

If you are jamming a key or a scale it's easier than you might think. It's called chord chasing. Verses repeat and you can hear it in your head. They also likely missed several "right moments" but landed on a few that sounded sweet. Not all pieces fit into a specific key either which is why you need to know the chord and melody structure. This one is pretty easy to know where to land. Take a band like Metallica with 140bpm, changing key and time signatures and it gets more challenging- but still fun. Too much info., I know- just sharing. I play guitar (not like this) and like to hear myself talk. 😎

I had him play a few specific chords in order (the chorus to ALIVE by Pearl Jam.) I then soloed over it in Em. His face lit up like he never heard anything so magical and raw. When it was over, he was smiling ear to hear. He then asked me, "Can we do that again- only this time I want to record it!" Of course, I said YES! I never thought I would see these two in one performance. Thanks so much for helping this happen Rick. Absolutely warms my heart to see how much magic the acoustic guitar can create - these are two of the greatest of all time - and using a timeless tune like this it gave them all the space they needed to honor the tune and be creative. Isn't Mikes smile at the end just a priceless indication of that musical connection us musicians know so well. Amazing. The best. Thanks again!!!!

Shawn mendes, Billy Eilish, Taylor Swift, etc. Mayer is beyond almost every mainstream talent we have today in both his songwriting and musicianship. Mayer is WAYYY Underrated! He revolutionized the music world by his unique blend of genres and his ability to relate to numerous audiences. You really do not realize how lucky you are to have witnessed such an (unrecognized) legend!

Amazing skill. I remember when I saw Tommy Emmanuel in Dartford, Britain. As the sweet sweet licks and the closed-eyed head shaking went on, the PA speakers began to edge forwards because of the rumbling of the bass. Had to get outta there before it fell and landed on my legs.

Two masters of their craft playing for the sheer joy of it. They could play well beyond their technical capabilities here, but respect the art, the source material and each other enough to serve the music. Lovely stuff. x
