What a legendary combo!! Tommy doing muted notes for 30 seconds, showing he's all about serving the song and not about "the spotlight". Absolute master!
This is what gets me every time I see Tommy playing with anybody. Truly one of the greats, we can all learn a lot from just that bit!
He perfectly compliments anyone he is playing with
So inspiring!
Tommy, Mike, Rick and John
I count 4 legends
It didn’t work
This shows how exceptional John Mayer’s song writing ability truely is.
The dude is a mean guitar player and makes lovely songs. Can't knock Mayers skills
@@wavewithus4081 And the thing is that he made it with just 3 simple chords so everyone can play along with it. He even mentioned on one of his interviews that he doesnt just want people to play Gravity or Slow dancing, he wants people to understand how he plays it and create their own stuff when playing along.
@@jumblejumbo He's not a household name, I'll give you that. But with all due respect to him and his massive talent, I say this as a fan: he is extremely overrated in the guitar community. Modern guitar players study his music exclusively to a fault. I've had numerous guitar students who think he's the only guitar player to have ever lived. 😂 And again, I love his music and playing.
@@RoyalBlue43 Eric Clapton says in an interview, that John doesn’t understand how good a guitar player he is. I think that says it all. Over rated? Hell no
@@UA-cam_user3333 clapton is over rated as well. they're both mediocre at best.
2:27 Tommy thought they were back to the intro part, but saw it was time for a solo and instantly pulled back for Mike to have his spot. That's how everyone should play when they play with others
Nice observation. You’re right 😁
The speed... I mean the time it took it him to realise he was going the wrong way. That's more of a reflex than a decision 😅 man, Tommy is marvelous
I love how Tommy plays notes that simply accompany the song and aid to it while not trying to steal the show. This was so fucking cool.
that's the opposite of what he does. He's an egotistical showman.
@@Tasmanaut I find it impressive what he can do but I agree for the most part. Never really enjoyed listening to him because of how flashy it is. Usually doesn’t sound that good but is super technical
@@Tasmanaut I'll keep an eye out for your version of this performance to learn.
@@Tasmanaut Try to listen. You don't watch music. And yes, he is in fact a showman. These guys are putting on a free show for us. And you whine about it.
@@tommylitchfield3450 if you shut your eyes and listen, it just sounds like random wa*k. Because it is. It is the reason I'm not impressed with him and never will be.
I don't know if I'm inspired to practice more, or just sell all my gear... 😂 These two are otherworldly
Practice more, brother..
It’s attainable!
My thoughts EXACTLY. Just when I thought I was getting good...I had to watch this.
@@UTAH100 there's no limit on progression... you even surpass your own imagination...So practice , practice, practice
Compare yourself to yourself not to others 👍
mom said it's my turn to post this comment next
How amazing is it to see Tommy Emmanuel playing John Mayer's song.
Really amazing.
Totally agree
It's such a clear sign of a master when they're playing for what fits the song arrangement and not worrying about being in the spotlight. Tommy is such a gift to the music industry in so many ways, and I will be truly saddened when that man passes.
Agreed. Let's hope it's a long, long time from now. His brother Phil left us far too soon.
heyehey wooooahhhh there. he is still around - go see him live while you can and get inspired
How do they get so good in guitar? I‘m envy
He will never pass. He'd be remembered.Always.
@@drewjamila3868Practice all day every day. It’s simple but very hard.
To think that Tommy Emmanuel is improvising is so mind blowing.
That is the thing which is so remarkable. TE makes such good improv' it sounds like a worthy composition in itself. Apparently he does not take much time at all to come up with his part, while MD already has the song down.
Yeah
Thanks for sharing Rick. Lots of love everyone. Looking forward to some tours with Tommy in the EU and USA coming up x
This is so very beautiful...💗💗💗
I love you Mike
Wow...you both gel so well together, it blows me away.
What a load of beans
Thank you shaggy
I’m amazed how Tommy plays his own brilliant parts while not stepping on the lead melody at all. Awesome.
This is what shows his true mastery. It’s insanity to see
Dawes kind of acknowledges TE magic improv' but it was hard to hear his words.
Tommy is a consummate professional of the highest order.
Actually he’s only stepping all over the song with every annoying note he plays.
@@z-ray-dadbod lol annoying notes hahaha why would you listen if you find TE annoying and don’t appreciate his amazing musicianship
Mayer’s songwriting skills are criminally underrated
I don't think so I'd say he is not only famous but also recognized as both a great guitarist and songwriter.
@@natalirivero467100%
very overrated
@@AlexandrBorschchevsure, keep smoking what ur smoking. U want to talk about overrated? Shawn mendes, Billy Eilish, Taylor Swift, etc. Mayer is beyond almost every mainstream talent we have today in both his songwriting and musicianship. Mayer is WAYYY Underrated! He revolutionized the music world by his unique blend of genres and his ability to relate to numerous audiences. You really do not realize how lucky you are to have witnessed such an (unrecognized) legend!
@@mram03 lmfao. no need to bring other artists down just to prop someone up. I wouldn't even call myself a fan of these artists, including Mayer and especially not Swift. I just fuck with a few of their songs. But you can't talk down on Swift's songwriting, influence in the (mainstream) music industry and her impact on so many young people
I wonder if John has seen this. I truly believe this is the best cover of anything ever. Its really magical. I bet it would even give John the shivers. !
It must be very flattering, even to someone of Mayer's stature, to have these 2 cats playing his song. I hope he sees this video.
Don't count on it. With his massive ego, he has probably already consulted counsel to explore options for litigation. No joke.
@@UTAH100 You don't know Mayer that well I'd assume
@@GoinMLG I do know enough people like him. I also don't know Mike Tyson either but suffice it to say, I would not want to box him. Your logic makes little sense. I suggest you stick to playing your video games.
Owned
@@UTAH100 I guess when you're a baby boomer you don't realise that someone in their 20s can change by their 40s. John probably still has an ego as anyone with his status and skill should have however, he has definitely changed to be a more respectful and modest person. And if you disagree with that you simply haven't spent time looking.
The mark of a great musician is not how much he stands out in a song but how he makes that song better.
But did he?
Yes
I have had the ultimate pleasure of working with Tommy many years in Scotland when i was an music Tech student. he's a gem of a man and a phenomenal musician i will always remember after his gig he joined a local bunch of lads playing in the pub and he improved with them as they played "Drive" by Incubus. it was and still remains to be one of the single best musical experiences of my life. He played amazingly and at the same time didn't try to outshine the band or steal the limelight away from the young guys playing. Thankyou Tommy for being you.
I didn't know Tommy, but frankly I'm speechless, he plays with such wisdom and respect. He knows exactly what to do and when. The timing of his phrases is perfect.
You didn't know Tommy Emmanuel. I stop living.
That was incredible. Dude pulled a mandolin out of his guitar lol
Yeah.. he actually pulls anything out of this box!
Watch a video of him playing Jolly Swagman...he straight up pulls out bagpipes! Out of his guitar. Crazy lol.
Fucking hell, I'm choking in laughter over here. 😂🥃 Well said!
The song has morphed into a flowing river, with the notes ebbing, cascading and peaking, creating a beautiful soundscape
That bit, right at the end when Tommy outs his hand out, as if to capture the soundwaves as they flow away from him...
🧀
The increasing respect given to John Mayer puts a huge smile on my face. Been 💯 fan since day one. Thank you Mike and Tommy! Great jam session!
John's expansive lead work with Dead & Co nigh on five years has truly expanded his blues based sound and gone into that psychedelic realm.
Tommy Emmanuel playing JM song has to be JM’s top 10 best bragging rights of all time. And an absolute pleasure for us fans to see the acoustic guitar grand master playing one of my favorite singer songwriter’s songs of my time 👏
This must be what it is like to have nothing left to prove... relaxed, beautiful, and perfect.
the two guitars compliment each other very well. good arrangement. and very musical... you can tell both have mastered their instruments to the point where they can just feel the song and not worry about hitting certain notes
Two masters of their generations - digging on each other’s playing!
Every guitarists' dream to master the fretboard like Tommy 🤟
I got excited when I saw this notification because I thought it was a What Makes This Song Great, but this didn't disappoint, absolutely beautiful playing, luscious full arrangement of one of my favourite songs of all time. Bravo!
What makes this song great is Mike Dawes and Tommy Emmanuel lol. Enough said!
This should be Rick Beatos next WMTSG
you know you've written a good song when legends love to play it.
Absolutely stunning. Thanks Rick for giving us this wonderful piece of music.
The joy in their playing is magical to watch.
The shear beauty and joy of playing a note, and knowing that someone else will be joining you at just the right moment with another note. 👊🏻🔥😎
👊🥳
If you are jamming a key or a scale it's easier than you might think. It's called chord chasing. Verses repeat and you can hear it in your head. They also likely missed several "right moments" but landed on a few that sounded sweet. Not all pieces fit into a specific key either which is why you need to know the chord and melody structure. This one is pretty easy to know where to land. Take a band like Metallica with 140bpm, changing key and time signatures and it gets more challenging- but still fun. Too much info., I know- just sharing. I play guitar (not like this) and like to hear myself talk. 😎
@@UTAH100
I believe he was more talking about having such amazing synergy with those you play with. That was how I took it, but I could be wrong.
Something amazing about being so tight and in tune 🤙
@@samblack5313 I agree with you. I was just expanding on that and sharing how anyone can enjoy the same amazing synergy. I use to marvel at it- then I learned to play and still marvel at it.
I recently played with some random guy at my local Guitar Center- he was new to playing and we were trying out some guitars. I had him play a few specific chords in order (the chorus to ALIVE by Pearl Jam.) I then soloed over it in Em. His face lit up like he never heard anything so magical and raw. When it was over, he was smiling ear to hear. He then asked me, "Can we do that again- only this time I want to record it!" Of course, I said YES! Music, being allowed to play and share it is an amazing gift.
Cheers!
@@UTAH100
That’s cool as, man. I get it. All I was saying is there’s something even more special about it when it’s someone you’ve played with a lot and can basically read each other’s minds.
Shred on 🤙
How did I miss this one. Simply wonderful.
I come back and play this video once a week. Simply amazing.
We need more collabs of legends like this! So good can't get enough 😍
Speechless 😶👏👏👏👏👏👏👏thanks for sharing this amazing collaboration 👏👏👏👏
You hit it out of the park with this and the interview with Tommy, Rick. Thank you! -Gene
Listening to it for the 100th time feels still the same.
Masterpiece 🙌🏻❤❤
It gives me goosebumps every time
So powerful, feels are off the charts...thank you gentlemen!!!
Love this song! what an amazing arrangement, thanks fellas
I can't get enough of this, it's just another level! I feel every second of it and it's simply amazing. I love when a living legend like Tommy covers a song of another legend like Mayer
I love the vibes they got going on. This song is all about feeling when playing it. These guys nailed it!
Such a beautiful sound made by these great masters of the guitar...! ❤️❤️❤️
Certainly two favorites. So satisfying to hear.
expression, heart n'soul - Tommy always delivers
I cannot stop listening to this! Absolutely beautiful!
What a wonderful duet! Love how everything is about the song first and foremost, and the feel is just amazing. Thanks for sharing!
Such great arranging and complementary playing.
Lovely, sublime playing over a simple, irresistible set of chords. Absolutely love it.
Fantastic 👏
How wonderful a tribute. Im always amazed at Tommy and his choices he makes surprises me, its rare to see both mental and physical acuity at that level, its just a real treat. A+
Gorgeous tones and musicality that blend together seamlessly. Incredible recording sound too!❤
Man! What masters you guys are! What a gift to behold. Absolutely wonderful!
This moved me more than any other acoustic guitar work in five years! What a gift! Love is the highest power.
Quel bonheur, quelle beauté que ce duo de guitare !
Daaaaaaaaaamn... This is so beautiful. Wow!!!!!
Speachless…. This moved my soul
Thank you Rick for this cut. I have played that interview for like 100 times just to hear this duet for the beauty of this tune. Now you finally get it cut to be played for at least another 100 times for me
Two legends playing another legends song, posted by legendary-good-song-loving uncle Rick Beato❤️
Chills… and more chills.
Wow. This made me cry. Absolutely fantastic.
oh man this tune hits the right spot .... thank you for your special talent ........
It's just too good, I can't even look directly into this level of musicianship.
I’m in tears, what a masterpiece
No words needed on how amazing this performance is! What a beautiful cover. Us viewers need more of this content. ❤️
Wow Fantastic. Tommy an absolute legend. What a pleasure to be able to be here on earth at this time to enjoy such musicians. Thankyou
Otherworldly performance! I’m absolutely speechless, the way Tommy accompanied Mike, his solo, everything was just perfect!
Love Tommy and now he’s using one of my favourite acoustics of all time
One of just a handful of perfect moments in guitar history. Amazing that it could be captured.
Tommy and Mike in guitar heaven, just fantastic haha 😃👏
Outstanding…one of my favourite things is when two or more players simply do their thing sympatica, and these guys do. Gorgeous.
Que sensibilidade incrível, que músicos espetáculares!!!
I could listen to them do this for at least an hour and not get bored.
That was incredible!!! I could listen and watch all day.
Now I have to play this in loop the whole night!
Watching and listening to these 2 guys - I spend so much time checking out guitar gear, seeking to satisfy my GAS and I realise time would be much better spent practising. 2 acoustics plugged in, a touch of reverb - and amazing tone coming from their fingers and souls!! Aural bliss
Such a simple song in it's structure, yet so strongly inspires and incites so many people to carve their own special take on it. Wonderful writing produces awe$ome covers.
Just...ethereally...superbly...delicate. Fanx muchly to both Tommy & Mike....y'all made my day...utterly groovy...just a class act!!!
Wow. Two of my favorite players. Never thought I’d hear Tommy E play John Mayer.
I’m sure John would have a blast hearing this. Beautiful acoustic work as usual Mr Emmanuel !
Three of my favorite content creators in one place. Thanks so much Rick, Tommy, and Mike. This is great.
I’m heart and jaw on the floor humility mastery and respect. Ahhhh there is peace on earth
There is love in the playing, genuine love for music, and the guitar
Makes you realize what a hell of a musician Mayer is
This is sooo incredibly beautiful what you express together...what a source of inspiration...it evokes pure bliss. May you forever dance with the muses 🧚
I was grinning from ear to ear throughout the entire performance. Just outstanding.
Hard to discribe to non musician's the sheer bliss of the coversation of music, the flow of two great musicians giving each other space yet
Coheasive enough to have a singular soul to the music , bravo beautiful work
What an absolute joy Tommy is..
KING 👑
I think i just had an out-of-body experience watching these two play! Thank you Tommy & Mike!!
I haven’t listened to a song that made me smile like this one did in a long time. It’s more fun and easier to listen to than the original, and I like the original.
This song was already one of the most beautiful I know from my other favorite, Mayer. This is beyond perfection
I love Tommy’s epiphone.great,great music
Tommy Emmanuel is pure joy at the guitar. So lovely to see and hear--a great duo.
2:07 Except the fact that I love the whole arrangement - that harmony is so awesome!
Hearing this beautiful duet just made my day. Life is good. Thanks for sharing, Rick.
Now you get out there and PLAY Burke. Hearing is great, playing is on another level.
Watching Tommy here is incredibly inspiring 🙌 ❤ 👏
I love this version like all the arrangements of these two giants. Looking so much forward to hear Tommy Emmanuel in Hamburg in November.
Oh man, Tommy is just on whole another level, serving the music, letting it pour through him. The musicianship has nothing to do with it, just pure love for the music. Thank you.

Dats da fax Jack!!
I've been lucky to have seen Tommy live on two occasions. Each time in a cozy, intimate, folky venue to around 50 people. In the intermission he walked past and out of nowhere cracked a joke to my late father, because he'd spotted how much my Dad was in awe of the show whilst he was playing. Tommy's an extraordinary talent and just a lovely person all around.
I saw Tommy live in Austin. Was a big fan before, but seeing him live, made me appreciate how bit of a talent he is.
Lucky to have watched Mike live. Just awesome.
Amazing skill. I remember when I saw Tommy Emmanuel in Dartford, Britain. As the sweet sweet licks and the closed-eyed head shaking went on, the PA speakers began to edge forwards because of the rumbling of the bass. Had to get outta there before it fell and landed on my legs.
