Hey friends! Tell me all about which popular plants you didn’t like and don’t recommend to people!
Awesome to see bit more of you again 👏
I would say the monkey tail cactus for me ESPECIALLY a cutting of one. Even a "rooted" cutting." I've spent hundreds and hundreds of dollars on monkey tails and just found a grower who sells you a whole rooted pot for a great price so hopefully I don't kill it since it's a nice establishment mature plant.
Brandtianums! I first started keeping plants last year Oct and they were easy $100+ AUD, and for a small plant at that. Since then, I’ve seen people sell them for pennies. Not only that, people impulse buy them bc of the rare price factor, but seem to purge them because they don’t size up and stay weird with unfurling/bushiness. I love my Sodiroi and glad I stayed with it at $15 for my giant pot of it.
This is a good one! People went mad for these in america back in 2020 and they had no staying power.
I second this!!brandiatnums are just so annoying to grow. So many runners, small leaves… cancelled
I just put mine up at a plant swap, so basically free 😂
I've heard people say Brandi. but. I have no issues with mine, that arent user error. just gotta get em rooted to the pole.
Flora Magnifica in Perth have brandtianum aff. The two together contrast wonderfully. 😊😊😊😊😊😊
I was trying to figure out why I enjoy your channel and it finally hit me! You’ve got this Gossip Girl vibe going on, and that was one of my fave shows growing up
I’m so glad you’re enjoying it! Would you believe it if I told you I’ve never actually seen that show?
@@PlantFriendDownTheStreet omg no way! You really do sound like Kristen Bell when she says ‘you know you love me, xoxo Gossip Girl’ 😁
Well I am honored because she’s amazing
Variegated micans 🙌🏼 very few are actually pretty, most of the time they look like sick micans.
Especially the halo ones!
Omg yes. These look like vomit on a leaf
Lots of ‘unicorn’ plants are dropping in price faaaast, but I wouldn’t say they are cancelled. Can’t wait to get my hands on an alocasia serendipity var once it falls more
I just say cancelled to be cheeky and for the clicks. It’s all in good fun. Alocasia serendipity is amazing, I hope you get one!
My general rule has always been if the plant is not happy in my ambient environments then they belong in the wild. Just accept if a plant is for the streets, you can’t turn a hoe into a houseplant!!🤣🤣🤣🤣
See this is why I read the comments, because every once in a while, someone says something so funny I spit out my wine. Bravo 👏🏻 👏🏻👏🏻
Man, if I lived in SoCal, or any other place where people can't get rid of plants like the A. Luxurians or the Epipremnum Albo, I would've taken it off their hands asap. The thought of building my plant collection off of purge plants/ unwanted plants is so fun to me, it's like shopping for clothes during a holiday sale
It’s not just SoCal… National groups aren’t that different. Check and see if there’s a local group on Facebook. That’s where all the good deals are.
@@PlantFriendDownTheStreet I do join and peruse through facebook groups in my country, but I feel like the plant community here doesn't really have the culture of purging or giving away plants. I think it's rare enough to find a marble queen pothos being purged yet alone something more coveted like the luxurians. Though, some local plant sellers will be very generous and give me a bunch of free plants when I purchase from them, so I guess it isn't all bad
Oooooooo yeah if you’re outside the US I bet it’s totally different. Sorry for being so US-centric!
@@PlantFriendDownTheStreet haha it's completely understandable
Adasonii i can't keep it pretty. Getting watering right is difficult. It kept yellowing. Just looked raggedy. Im over it.
This is exactly what happened to me. Thank you, next
I recently trashed mine
Yep! Adensonii…😓
Yyyyup. All drama.
really? I have several forms and it's one of my easiest! chunky mix and humidity.
Rare plants are cancelled in general and I never really spent a lot of money on one particular plant, but I was so tempted with Thai monstera too many times. I waited until now and here in UK they are around 150£ for huge mature specimens. It was worth waiting 😉
Heuschkeliana is my favv lol. Glad it’s more affordable it’s a great grower for me, but I blast my Hoyas with light :)
I wish mine had made it! That’s amazing
I'm really new in the plant community and this list is really interesting!
You makes me add the strawberry shake to my wishlist.
I don't want to buy something because everyone have it, I want plants who "call" me.
I'm more into Succulents, but I'm really enjoying other plants like Monsteras and Orchids! Those 3 family are the ones I really love!
Another awesome videos. Thanks!!
Totally agree with everything and yes been seeing a lot of rare syngonium for cheap too. The other plants I’ve noticed starting to get big are all the aglonema species, do you own any yourself??
I don’t but that’s interesting! Anthurium are really spiking in price and popularity right now so I’ve been monitoring what’s going on there, but I should look into agleonema.
I felt the same way about my adansonii mint too that is was very unimpressive so I kinda let it be on the side of my desk and it clung to the wall and just grew like crazy. And to save my wall I put it on a moss pole and the leaves and variegation have room off. The larger the leaves get to more camo look and it’s starting to be one of my favorites.
That’s awesome! I wish mine did that well. I’d love to see pics on Instagram if you remember to tag me ❤️
Obliquas maybe? Not very popular anymore...
Oh 100%! They appeared in an installment in this series last year though 😊
@@PlantFriendDownTheStreet oh yeahhh havent seen that one yet haha. Im just watching your video hard plants that you are doing great with and the luxurians was the first one just funny hahah
Omg a trip down memory lane haha
I agree with your choices it’s great that plant prices are going down. I went crazy with hoyas at first but stopped now.
I agree. I’m really nostalgic for the days when it was kind of hard to find certain plants and it was fun to check out big box stores to see if you would score big time on a hard to find plant. I think the hunt was half of the fun!
Same here, re: her selection of plants and also with the Hoyas! 😅
I am with you on the p lux. I heard it was finicky got it anyway. Survived/grew all year (got in spring just like you said). It did ok, never really sized up or wanted to crawl properly. Then I repotted it this spring and it threw a fit. The roots were not great and all 4 leaves dropped. It is trying to put a new leaf out. I would not purchase again. The plant never looked as good in person as it looks in pics.
P Billie has come down in price a ton on my fb swap group. I got a rooted cutting for $15 but I hear it’s a slow grower. Maybe ppl are over it but I’m game to try! The variegated form comes up and no one will buy, it’s still too expensive I think. I love your video topics you are so real about everything!
Thank you! I love my Billie and I definitely recommend them because they are really hardy and just an all around nice, easy going plant. Mine probably puts out a leaf every few months or so so they don’t take over your house. I don’t have it in my heart to cancel them but you’re right that they’re way more affordable now.
I have a Green Spot Syngonium, the mint smoothie looking kind. I'm sooo obsessed, I haggled with a seller for a rooted cutting for like $30 supposed, but it had like at least 4 leaves so a big cutting. It was a pain trying to grow in Leca so I just have it in straight water and it's thriving 🤷🏼♀️
My anthurium luxurians has honestly been one of the easiest in my collection! Sorry you didn't have the same experience with yours 😅
I’m jealousssssss bc they are very cool when they’re happy! I have a hybrid though and my splendidum so I still get corrugated vibes
@@PlantFriendDownTheStreet I think its very different for a philodendron vs anthurian
They’re both cancelled
ok ok ok I hear you, I feel you, BUT I am ride or die for my majestic 💖😂
I saw your video yesterday and I was like “oh no”!
@@PlantFriendDownTheStreet hahaha 💚💚 it does suck that they lose their silver though :( I’m dreading it!
😞
Thanks for sharing how some plants change in undesirable ways. I had no idea 😮
Also… begonias never 😂
Haha! Same. My friend keeps trying to get me to try them and I’m very apprehensive 😬
So right about the Ep Prim Pin Albo. Its as tall as I am and just now getting its tiny holes. No one wants the cuttings...its pretty though.
I think hoyas kind of fell out of favor because they are super finicky. Aside from the few super easy buy at Home Depot hoyas, every "weird" one I've ever owned has just randomely decided to die after six months, or they still have only one leaf two years later. They were the cool thing until regular collectors started buying them and realized they are kind of a pain in the ass.
I’ve definitely killed more Hoyas out of any other genus so I think you might be on to something there
😂
You water them too often prob
I agree on the Syngonium. But not the Majestic. I love mine. I have it on a choir pole (rather than a moss pole) and it pretty much stays “teenage”.
I have 2 Anthurium Luxurians (one big and another bought as a seedling) and they are my easiest anthuriums, together with the Clarinervium. Maybe i just got lucky, for now 😅
The Philodendron Luxurians on the other side...another story. I took 3 cuttings of the one i bought and after having them in my Rudsta, i had to move 2 out in room humidity. They are struggeling, i still have a bit of hope they will survive but i would not buy it again. My 6 Gloriosums are less stress then 1 Lux.
My canceled plant is the Queen Anthurium, i am on my third and last try. If i fail again, that's it!
Omg queens for sure deserve to be cancelled I’m just also in denial and trying very hard to salvage mine. The Esmeralda queen is a little easier imo. My big dark one got powdery mildew and is coming back from a stump. I share your pain!
@@PlantFriendDownTheStreet I am so glad to hear that the Esmeralda is a bit easier, I just got one yesterday. Keeping all my fingers crossed 😂
Mine is doing well in pon! Working on a second leaf now
Hi I have a few I can add to the list the global green pothos-it’s very finicky and no matter what I did to it it was not happy and I ended up tossing it, next would be the baltic blue pothos because of how straggly the plant became after being in my home for about a month and the next would be the scindapsus Treubi dark form it grows painfully slow and mine quickly declined too
Good additions 👍🏻
Your "queen" honestly inspired me to get a strawberry shake for my birthday in January. Mature plant highly variegated 4 leaves for just over £100 uk. No regrets. Absolute adore it 🥰 On the other hand a lot of my hoyas are starting to get on my nerves when they just keep pushing runners and i need to look or make yet another trellis. I'm really thinking about just combining them into one giant pot with a big trellis 🤔😂
That sounds like an amazing deal! I love strawberry shakes so much and even though I get bummed sometimes that they’re not as big of a flex as they used to be, it’s honestly cool that more people can have them because they are literally that great. I’m honored that I inspired you!
Just a thought, have you checked the Hoyas for flat mites? I think you have to use sulfur to treat them. They make new growth shrivel and die. That could maybe be the issue with the Hoyas potentially? I’ve never had them but Becca de La Plants has talked about them on her channel
Pretty regularly.
@@PlantFriendDownTheStreet I've checked all my plants after watching wildfern's infestation. No flat mites just pure laziness on my side 😅 I'm good at putting aroids on moss poles but with hoyas I keep putting it off. They are climbing my cabinet walls 😂 but I need to do something because they have reached the top now haha!
luxurians is a cloud forest plant. it requires a higher level of care and standard of knowledge.
"dont get luxurians because its hard" is all i hear.
This makes sense because generally most of the plants with reputations for being difficult end up needing cooler temps.
The one I have is growing very happily in water and I think I’m going to keep it fully aquaponic. My dream would be to have it growing in an aquarium someday.
Personally my issue with hoya or rather any plant that I want to have looking like a bush is that if, for any reason you have root rot, it's game over I'm better off cutting everything up and restarting it. The idea of restarting any sort of small and dainty looking plants completely deters me from having anything of the sort other than the trailing Philodendron. Really loved Peperomia prostrata, but nah - ain't dealing with that. String of hearts is only with me for experimentation purposes 😂😂
Very true!
What!!!?? Anthurium Lux?! No not cancelled! Still beautiful 😍, mine has been growing very nice…. 5th leaf just came in last week and doing great.
The ghost of mine still haunts me ✨🪴❤️
Could you Talk more about your F. Sodoroi? Is It hard to grow? I want one even if it's Lost the silves shine
Hey! So I have had sodirois but the plant in this video is the sodiroi x verrucosum hybrid. It’s a totally fine plant other than that it loses the silver. Pretty easy going, mid humidity is fine. There’s not too much more to it, honestly. Hope that helps!
@@PlantFriendDownTheStreet thanks for the insight, now im feel a little more confident
WildFern has a beautiful Philo Majestic in her collection, and probably some good care videos. Hers lives in her apartment in ambient temp/humidity, with a grow light.
Planted Hippie channel has a nice Anthurium luxurians. Thanks for the video!
I love her channel
Epipremnum pinnatum albo ist gorgeous in it's mature Form, but it just grows too quickly for me to be able to keep up with on a pole. If a plant puts out more than one leaf a month, I'm usually out 😅
You would think a fast growing plant would be anyone's dream, but if you have work or Uni or anything of the sort, you just can't stay on top of that one fast grower on a pole
Yep, the struggle was real and the leaves never got any bigger
Haven't tried the albo, but i get it with my baltic blue... Too bad the skeleton doesn't grow that fast.
I personally can cancel most types of plants. Majority of my collection is hoya with a few odd balls.
I would love to hear your top ones! I’m honestly getting more into Hoyas now that I’ve had a few finally bloom. Very satisfying experience!
Syngonium wendlandii is constantly getting yellow leaves, still alive but not thriving. Milk confetti looses pink when 🍃 become big, I keep most of my syngoniums ( not albo or aurea) small, to maintain nice variagated leaves. Could be just me lol
I knew that the wendlandii and rayii both lost their stripes when they got bigger but I didn’t know that the mill confetti lost its color as it matures! That’s so disappointing.
Strawberry shake is my dream plant 😂
I think rare plants in general are cancelled. Why buy an expensive plant, when it will be cheap in half a year? Went to my local garden center and it had monstera albo tucked away in a corner because apparently nobody cares.
Yesssssss 😈😈😈😈. I way overspent in 2020 and 2021. Now I’m like trades only.
@@PlantFriendDownTheStreet I like the Anthurium Papillilaminum but I would only pay like 40-50 bucks for it.
Welp…. I have bad news for you then. Hopefully prices on those come down too eventually.
@@PlantFriendDownTheStreet Yes I know they go for like 300 but I am patient.
Yep, I concur. Wait a year and they'll have it at a big box store for $20, ha.
Love it! And I was about to pay 200 bucks luxurians, but you’ve convinced me! Not getting one!!😅
This is a wise decision!
Philodendron pink princess I'm over them. Doesn't want to open
I'm just letting it grow without cutting back. Adasonii never looks good with me the leaves always looks shriveled and sickly😂😂😂. I do have a philodendron pinnatipartita i love that plant. Its in water with my amplissimum growing water roots no special humidity. I'm going to let it trail. Very happy with it.
I'm with you, cancelling lame plants is FUN!!!
Yesssssssssss ✨🪴❤️😈
😂❤
Philo. luxurians are like melanochrysums. Get them big and they are easier to care for.
Who says I haven’t got any big ones 🤣
Patiently waiting for the day we cancel the spiritus sancti
Omg there was a thread about this in a group today where it’s being sold in a discount bundle by Ecuagenera for less than $200 with two other philodendrons. It’s today. The group declared it over. I wasn’t planning on making another cancellation video any time soon but I might have to, haha!
Philodendron Lupinum. I don’t even have to explain 😆🫠
I used to have one of those! It was awful
And I could never get my philodendron furcatum to grow/acclimatize 😢
Ivan told me that those literally grow in the beds of streams in the rainforest… I was never going to get that one to thrive without some kind of terrarium situation. Shame bc they are gorgeous.
For me it's the Philodendron Birkin....what's the big deal?!?! They just don't do it for me. I have one... giving almost perfect conditions and it's such a slow grower, giving me 1 leaf per month and very faint striping. Don't get the hype! And they are a dime a dozen here in Australian now.
The same thing happened with those over here like two years ago. What happened is that they were TC creations that didn’t have stable characteristics that were sold under the name “birkin” to generate hype. They are pretty in theory but without stable characteristics there’s not much you can do. It’s too bad because they were really pretty!
Having tried nearly all the popular anthuriums and luxurian is the only one I could grow and keep in good shape (I even couldn’t keep veitchii nice when everyone says veitchii is the easiest anthuriums) 😢
My experience with Veitchii has been that it was really difficult to root and acclimate but now that it’s stable it does well. That’s amazing about your lux but awful about the other anthurium! If you want to try more, let me know because I have a lot of them in open air and I’d be happy to help with tips! Very cool that the lux is thriving though, not easy to do ✨🪴❤️
@@PlantFriendDownTheStreet Jumping on this because I would love some tips on growing in open air, pretty please 🙏🏻
The biggest thing is that the transition to lower humidity needs to be the last transition they go through. You have to grow them in humidity until they are recovered from import and established enough in their permanent substrate to withstand the transition. Only transition during the early spring. Try and keep the light levels the same as their humidity vessel. Be prepared for them to not be able to handle it over the winter and accept that they may have to be put back during colder/darker months. Be realistic about your humidity levels though. If they get down below 40, that’s really pushing it for most species. Growing in lower humidity makes watering really important. Most anthurium really enjoy having moisture levels stay consistent. Hope that helps!
Philo Brandy
I just got mine, it’s in my greenhouse cabinet with 100% humidity. So far no problems. How has it been to grow yours? I have heard they can be quite finicky… do they require height humidity? I’ve seen some grown outside of cabinets…
So philo Brandi is another good one because people went absolutely feral for these back in 2020. The issues are really
Similar to Melanochrysum with them punching though leaves and never sizing up but there are actually at least two forms and most people
See the large form online and want that and then end up buying the small form
So there’s no hope of ever getting what they want but they have no idea.
Ugghhhhh
Gigas and billietiae no one wants it $10 or $25CAD
It’s wild how that happened
