    The thai con is my favorite monstera . I never had one rot on me. I paid over 200 for a baby and sold a huge top cutting from it for 275 the pot it was 30 so i broke even on the plant lol. I made 6 more plants in less then a year. I grow them outside. I love the fact they dont revert. I like how they stay on the ground and don't try to climb. Once i cut the top cutting off a big plant i usually get 4 big nodes and 4 more plants. I plant to sell the big ones now for 100 each the plant has never failed me. but

    Another thing about Thai Con is that, apparently, there is a better, tougher Thai Con that existed before the plant boom and the new TC Thais are much more sensitive and slow growing. This is from Kaylee Ellen and she tends to be correct.
    The Costa Farms situation was honestly one of the most interesting part of houseplant culture maybe ever. The backlash was very entertaining!

      There can definitely be bad batches out there, but I don't think there is a time-line for when thais were hardy. Imo, it's a way for plant peeps to say, "I had a Thai before it was cool. "
      The tc babies coming from a particular grower in tx are 🔥. Mine that I've been growing for 6 months is hardy af, fast growing, already fenestrated and has killer sectoral variegation. I bought it as freshly variegated tc in moss. All that to say, "new tcs are bad" is just not true.

      @PlantFriendDownTheStreet  Рік тому +2

      What happens a lot with industrial scale TC is that the time for real quality control testing just isn’t taken. Plants are churned out so fast that specimens with bad genes aren’t culled. I’m sure that’s what happened somewhere along the line with Thais, although judging by some of the soil I’ve seen costa plants come in, it would not shock me if the issue with their Thais was that they didn’t like the standard costa soil mix and either no one thought of that or they couldn’t logistically accommodate that or it was too expensive. I grow all of my monsteras in almost straight orchid bark and that’s way more expensive than a bag of potting soil. Just a thought.

      I can confirm that older stock is super easy to grow. Mine was purchased about 13 years ago, over-grew my space. I've top cut it and have air layered the mother plant many times. Never had any rot. I have no experience with cloned plants, but I have heard there are issues.

    I had to laugh at the crazy prices I was seeing for the 'rare' or 'trendy' plants. I remember years ago you might find a variegated monstera at Home Depot with a tag 'Tropical Plant'. And the famed 'Philodendron Pink Princess' was sold in the nurseries in the 70's as an annual/houseplant filler for containers. That particular plant fell out of favor because it was so unstable and people realized it didn't maintain the pink.

    I find the concept of those videos very dumb yet I like them. Well done.
    I find most of those Monsteras have settled to their right place. Being rare and expensive is not always a good thing.
    M. siltepecana is a pothos tier reliable, unkillable houseplant, it deserve a little more coverage but at least everyone who want it can have it now. I gifted one to my local botanical garden and they are fond of it and are using it as a ground cover in the aroid section because it grow fast and lighten up the whole greenhouse with the silver color.
    Same for esqueleto, it's easy, it grow fast, it deserve to be cheap and easy to find. It also take less space than a deliciosa because the petioles are growing upright. It's just a better version of the notadansonii everyone it growing at home.
    Variegated peru and adansonii are a nightmare to grow, they deserve to be in the burning garbage can of unreliable plants. Burn in peace.

    Too funny. I’m glad I was late to the exotic plant craze party. I’m happy with what I paid for my collection.
    I honestly wouldn’t have a siltepecana or Peru if they weren’t categorized as Monstera. I do have to say, the El Salvador is impressive and stays silver as it sizes up. I think I paid $5-$10 for each cutting though.
    I LOVE my Kunzo tri color. The plant is just spectacular, but not a beginner imo. I can see why all the albo adansonii fell off. The browning white looks awful and the variegation so unstable.
    Standleyana is another that I would not have had if it weren’t “Monstera”, but it’s actually one of my favorites now as it’s grown. I’ve got some pretty nice variegation, so that helps, and pretty much covers any white wizard et al vibes I might have had.

    Esqueleto is kind of easy as you said, the thing about them is that they are very slow growers compared to an adansonii, which is probably a put off for a lot of people. My top cutting I made of the plant I bought was rooting for at least 5 months before it started growing. Takes over a month for a new leaf to start unfurling as well (in my experience). It's a lovely plant though if you got the patience - I think it's great that it became more accessible :)

It’s obviously a juvenile plant, maybe had 6 large leaves and the whole vibe was maybe 1-2’ total length. But I was shocked nobody took it yet, with the initial signs of variegation, too. All of the leaves had little streaks and flecks of white & yellow and the unopened, newer ones were clearly a minty/lighter green shade. I may go back and get it now! $14 is kind of a steal especially if it’s a variegate.

They are so beautiful and if you can get the care down are a gem of a plant. I would never buy another tiny tc anything. And tc TC are everywhere. It seems insane to me to add on the fact that tiny tc plants are hard, on top of TC being tricky anyway. I think the price has come down some but in my area at least they are very much in demand. Especially the bigger plants and cuttings. Monstera Aurea is the new TC/ Albo. I love MD varieties most of all my plants, even my rare and expensive ones.

They are really hit or miss and unfortunately I stand by cancelling them because of the ones with bad genes ruining their reputation. It’s really night and day with them. I see established obliqua in poles on marketplace for 50 bucks and still nobody buys. I had 3 thai cons (only have a huge one now) and they were awesome. Even if I keep my big mama at the darkest, less humid place, she still gives new leaves. She is my most favorite. My esqueleto for some reason keep having yellow spots and dead old leaves but she also gives me new leaves every 2 weeks. My albo keeps dropping older leaves, maybe bcz of too much white marble pattern. I still like her but she gives me anxiety

    True talk! In my opinion though, if I were to compare Siltepecana and standleyana, I think the latter is the odd stepchild! It looks so unusual for a Monstera. Almost… bland. At least, the plain standard green form. They’re just like straight almost rectangular leaves…? Idk. They’re cool but would I buy one? Meh. I would probably buy a siltepecana and grow it up a tree outside though. They have some leaf interest lol

    I think adansonii are pretty easy, I have a regular and two different types of variegation and they don't stop growing. I keep chopping my green and giving away like 3 foot vines of it. But I seem to have pretty good luck just growing a lot of plants in my regular Chicago condo with some grow lights without trying too hard. And I know people still love the variegated deliciosa but I have an aurea and It drives me nuts. Grows a half moon, then a full green, then kills of the aurea side of the half moon, and does this over and over again. My Thai looks great and just keeps getting bigger. I'd guess that if you have an older Thai it's probably more hardy. I got mine a couple years ago from a local gal who propagated her mother plant that was already bigger and older. The new ones are like half and full moon variegated and seem more delicate overall. I did finally decide to try an obliqua since the prices are down and it isn't dying in my dining room. It still has its original leaves but aside from that it just grows like six inches of runner a week. But definitely most of those other monstera you mentioned are almost absent in the stores. There is a local nursery that still has leftovers of standleyana and a few others and they refuse to lower the price even though they have been there for over a year.

I live in Germany and I put mine on a mosspole and as soon as it started to root into the pole I started to fertalize as it weekly with a mineral/unorganic fertalizer. So basically with every watering and I only ever water through the mosspole and it‘s doing just great. I keep my temperature at least at 20 C (68 F) and relative air humidity of at least 55%. Thaicon cancelled? Are you kidding? It sells like hot cakes here. I never had a single one rot! And they are in hydroponics. Maybe make a disclaimer before video that you are talking about US market? Because in Europe its completelt different story, and you saying with such confidence sounds like it pertains to the whole world. As for price You cand buy a 5 leaf thai 30-50 cm leaves for 200-250 usd.

    • @PlantFriendDownTheStreet
      @PlantFriendDownTheStreet  Рік тому +1

      Fair enough… I think possibly the American Thais and the European Thais could be coming from different distributors because with Thais it’s always either they’re rotting uncontrollably or they’re amazing and robust. I think that Walmart has also been carrying Thais out here and between those and the Etsy tissue culture Thais for $20 or $30 bucks, the market here has crashed. I’m surprised that Europe has had a similar trajectory. I usually do try to give that geographical disclaimer but about 96% of my audience is in the US and Canada so sometimes I forget…

    • @aplantprocess
      @aplantprocess Рік тому +2

      Thank you for limiting the disclaimers 😊
      They can be so repetitive.
      And when you think about it, disclaimers are intended to keep a small number of people who get easily annoyed or confused from getting less annoyed or confused.
      But like… most of those people are going to be one or the other (or both) regardless.
      Context clues were here… I love the way you speak but I doubt anyone would be surprised that you’re in California and you did clarify Costa is in North America and you clearly understand the market here.
      Love that you don’t cater to new plant people, but I completely believe they could benefit from this content. I did when you first started 🙌🙌
      I still do 😊
      It definitely seems like some Thais are destined to rot. I also think the fact that new plant people are drawn to them doesn’t help their reputation. That’s because plants don’t follow the same logic of other purchases where paying more can reasonably equate to a better experience.
      It seems like when plants are more expensive, more risk is likely involved because the expensive plants aren’t plentiful for a reason (a lot of the time) 🤷‍♀️
      Here I go with disclaimers and caveats 😂
      I like challenging plants that can be figured out but it takes time for sure. Videos like this will save a lot of people a lot of time (and money).
      The plant community is so lucky to have you.

    • @PlantFriendDownTheStreet
      @PlantFriendDownTheStreet  Рік тому +1

      Wow, what a nice thing to say! Really good points about how newbies being drawn to Thais could hurt their reputation, same with the higher prices on plants not equating to a better experience like most other things in life.
