  • In this video, we take to the range with the InvestArm Plains Pistol kit (that we built on the channel) and shoot it 140 times to get a feel for how it performs.
I test the overall function of the pistol, as well as accuracy, field maintenance, and more.

As the son of a man who got caught up in the Jeremiah Johnson craze of 1972 and never recovered, I grew up with a Charles Daly Spain Hawken in my hand. I hunted with it and reenacted my own scenes from my imagination in the hills and hollers of Virginia. I got into living history at 16, when my father gifted me my P53 Enfield, reenacting for real and sponging every grain of knowledge from any old guy who loved to talk. I can really appreciate the time, effort and powder that you burn to educate and enlighten others on the ways of old! I also hold your father in high regard because it is obvious he is a major influence on you, as all great fathers are.The pangs that you go to in order to remain historically accurate and the willingness that you possess to share your findings on a broader scale are priceless! I sincerely hope that I can make it to Friendship one day and shoot with the both of you!

    Nice shooting!
I own a Lyman GP 50 caliber rifle, shooting a 490 rb (I cast myself) and a #15 patch. I also make my own bp with a willow carbon source (very fast powder) Homemade caps as well. Such a fun gun to shoot… and very accurate.
After watching this video, I have decided to get the 50 cal pistol kit so I’ll have a matching set.
Thanks for persuading me, Ethan! LOL.
    Love your videos man!!

I had to adjust the sight of my .50 kit. Now my load is 20-25 grains of 777 with a tight patched round ball, then I use 40-50 grains of 777 with a sabot loaded with a .452 FTX projectile. This gives me better accuracy than I am able to shoot. Plus I have the set trigger for shots over 25 yards which is nice. I am watching you load from the bag and I realized i need to work on that!!.

I have the same pistol (not from a kit) and when cocking the hammer I get the same double click after the half cock. My trigger is crisp and not too heavy. A great pistol.

Eathen, I think you need a new reloading stand for your new pistol. Maybe a combination of range box and loading stand, helps to keep all your gear together. Enjoy Enjoy 😊😊😊😊😊 good video thank you.

      @brokentoe570 4 місяці тому +1

@kneyork9930 sorry, I am talking about a range box to carry your powder and other stuff to shoot with. A loading stand helps holding the pistol while you load it so do not have to hold on the shooting bench or between your knees. Another of the shooter I know use them at the shoots. Just like shooting box filled with round balls, patches, cleaning stuff .

Oh yeah, that's true, and as long as the pistol is not loaded with tight fitting ball and patch combinations, not a problem. I've seen guys really pounding balls down the barrel with the gun in a stand, which is really hard on the stock. So that's what I was thinking.@@brokentoe570

You may not be aware that they make a nipple replacement that makes it a Musket cap rather than a #10 or 11 cap. Musket cap is hotter. I replaced them on my double 12 shotgun, and my side lock rifle years ago. Hang fires are VERY rare for me. Seems to burn hotter and cleaner too. On the double 12, it fixed an issue i noticed with the 12 double sometimes it would ever so slightly hang fire. Seems the musket caps like the 12 double shotgun. No hanging at all, instant ignition. A few days ago i paid 17 bucks for 100 musket caps.

Sir - A site adjustment in my opinion is all you need. Your high left groups might adjust down and center. I have an old 50 caliber CVA Hawken pistol that has adjustable site (obviously not period correct) but accurate enough after load development. Thanks for sharing your info with the younger folks. Let’s keep the hobby alive.

I built a GPP 2-3 years ago and for the belt clip, i did not add the little steel piece under under it and the instructions did not really specify where it was to placed so I figured that it was to be used only if I did not want to use the belt clip. Also when adding that piece under the belt clip, I found that the screw only caught maybe 2 of the threads into the lock plate so, I attached the clip without it and it put it much closer to the stock and it also looked much better because it was set flush into the stock and the screw was almost all the way through, where it should be. I also still has just the right amount of clearance to put on a belt. Oh, my hammer only has 2 clicks, half cock and full cock. I also polished the trigger components and the trigger is nice!

Atta boy, shoot that thang and get those fingers stinky!! Thanks for taking the time for this video. I am thinking the trigger pull is at least in part (if not in whole) responsible for those left-leaning shots. If you can secure this pistol in a rest, you may be able to confirm or dispell that.

Needs a trigger job, and the powder charge seems too light to properly upset the ball. The thicker patch of course engages the rifling better.
Bench resting at 13 yards, and adjusting powder loads for the tightest group then moving the sight to match the group will increase your confidence.
As for the trigger, I had a gunsmith teach me how to do a trigger job on an old cva lock, it is crisp and light for a single trigger. But not in a dangerous way.

  • @bobkelly2447

Very interesting to see what your doing thank you....
on my cva Hawken's 50 cal. pricussion rifle I built from a kit I found the rifle was extreamily accurate at about 100 yrds with open sights I didn't think I could see the target at any further ! the trigger pull I set to a few ounces , a very light pull after setting the trigger with the first trigger. on my Revolvers i found them quite accurate as well. and they were funner to shoot than the single shot pistles..... loading 6 at once is prefured to me.
my 50cal pistle just like you were shooting today was really fun.... but it did have a kick to it
and I had to laugh when you said 15 grains..... i felt like saying why bother ? but no sense in wasting all that powder either ! I loaded the 50cal pistle heavy.... it's a big gun and should be shot like one ....I like shooting tin cans myself not targets but targets do have their place
especially at first shots ! ....
I would like to see that pistle put in a pistle vice and shot from 50 to 75 feet away to see how consistent the ball's actually are in flight I used store bought patches lubed with crisco lard
on all my black powder guns....and I would have pitted my CVA 50cal. Hawkins against anyone at the time.... it shot dead level at 2000 yards ! believe it or not (normal balls not bullets) the bullets dropped about 6" but the balls were dead on target ! I had a 4'x4' plywood target with an x on it and I tried to shoot the center of the x..... with open sights that is not easy as the blade sight on the end of the berrol hides the entire target !
so I filed a slope on each side of the round on the blade to a point.... and that made all the difference in the world........ pistols are the same at 50 feet you cannot see where the target is... sharpen the blades round sides or square blade to a point so the sharp point edge is where the bullet is going...(so you see a pyramid when aiming.) i got darn good with all the black powder guns.... but sold them all to a friend when I moved..... I plan to get another 50cal black powder rifle but this time I want a scope ! i found that my 50 cal was just as accurate as my 30-06 but hit 3 times as hard
their great guns and great fun.... i plan to make my own caps and black powder too.
but seriously put some more powder in that gun boy ! it's a 50cal. it should stand you up !
LOL......that is what makes it so fun ! KaA-BOOM not a pow ! and those tin cans get BIG holes in them !

    Great Black powder
    Lube slick 50
This is going to sound like BS but its not. About 10 years ago, I was shooting metallic silouettes and getting my ass kicked we stopped for lunch I went and talked to the 2 great shooters. One was state champ the other took 3rd. Found out they both used the same gun oil. At that time I was working at a place that had chemical engineering took the oil in had them find out if it would be good for BP ( Goex ) came to tell me it would fill in the porisity in the metal but would take a while. Wife and I go to 15-20 Rondys a year. After about 10 I noticed a difference cleaning went faster. After about 20 NO rust not even surface rust after 6 months. Others have used it have the same success. This is where you may not believe me but it’s true Slick 50 Lube One Aerosol. Use it on my perc , flint, trade gun and shotguns never run a patch on any of them while shooting 30-40 rounds. Use Goex 3f on all our guns including shotguns

The idea of a reduced load for plinking and target shooting has always been a little crazy to me. Obviously there's nothing at all wrong with it, I just come from a perspective where any time spent on the range is for the point of training for a serious life or death fight. Problem is that mindset never turns off and I end up giving a "combat load" to a gun I will never use in a combat situation.
I hope to never have to do that shit again, as it sucks major ass. One day I'll be able to just have fun with the stuff.

trigger pull being too hard AND the hammer flying forward to hit the cap also makes the shots go where they are not intended.... once I started using a brace for shooting my 50 hawkins I started hitting where I wanted to....the hammer is heavy enough to turn the entire gun slightly and in this case with the pistol it's even easier for the hammer to move the whole gun a bit.... the conclusion I came to was... you plan on it moving to the right or left.and aim accordingly because there is nothing you can do about it...that mass has to be there to fire the cap....this is why some new guns came out with in-line fire.... the sideways hammer makes the whole gun less accurate unless you compensate for it. file your forward sight and use a brace and you'll hit what you aim at...(within reason, grin.!)
ALSO.... get a bore sight lazer that you can slide in the berrol and put it on the target then check your sights.... my Hawkins was dead on, ALL my pistols were off ! ( i got a 40cal. lazer and just used tape to shim it to the 50ca.)

Enjoyed your video as usual. I am a long time Plains Pistol fan and shooter. Would like to see you shoot some heavy loads, and chronograph them, but I guess if you exceeded the manufacturer's suggested maximum load people would complain. Hey just a tip on shooting that pistol off hand. I know many don't think it's "cool" or acceptable to shoot it other than one handed, or at most with both hands on the grip or handle, but here's a better way: (try it when no one is looking) Hold the pistol like it is a rifle. Imagine it has a butt-stock. Hold your left hand under the fore-stock, ahead of the lock, like a rifle. Cock you right elbow, bring the gun back, not held straight out. Arms stretched straight out is not steady. Again, imaginary butt-stock. Pull back slightly with your left hand, push forward with your right hand, slightly. It works. Try it you'll like it. You can even see the sights better. Very steady. Also, if you use your middle finger instead of you trigger finger, on the trigger, and wrap you trigger finger around the front of the trigger guard, it will feel like you have reduced the trigger pull by half.
Just a quick fix, but may feel awkward. On the "double click", mine does not do that. Belt hooks? They suck. You could try to shorten yours, and bend the end closer to the stock, might help. But they suck. I took mine off the minute I got it. I wish they provided an optional serpent thingy or a round thingy or something one could put on instead. Sorry about the long post. Keep up the good work.
