Flintlock 4 Bore Dangerous Game Rifle | Henry Nock | Historic Firearm Detailed Overview
Ethan, sorry to hear that the old grey mare threw a shoe on your way home. I wish you would have been at camp Friday, I was one of the few that got to run the course by using a canoe down the creek into camp for the fire starting/ ball casting and shooting finish. The rain we had Friday evening changed the plan and made the creek a little bit dangerous. It was very good to see you out there again though
Black powder is actually dangerous.. why not upgrade .. muzzleloader wound more deer than anything because they don’t bleed.. so lot of wasted game. Why not move with the times instead of staying in 1800s with our fathers .
I was put in mind of Townsend, I don’t recall if it was James or Jon on a motor scooter in outfit pumping gas
I do carry a bar of soap that i use as needed Still do a big wash at home
Ethan your vids are almost as much fun as being in camp👍
Looks great
I'll definitely b looking for another bullet for black powder season, I've used power belt aerotips and got my biggest buck this past year with aerotips 295grain bullet with 150grains of powder which I specifically go with for Max penetration and knockdown power and I barely penetrated the front shoulder bone and had only handful of drops of blood what's the shot being at 20 to 25 yards considering how close how much powder I use in my gun was very surprised that I didn't have much penetration can I see how some different sabbaths perform but I'm still going to stay with 150 grains of powder I was using 100 g like most hunters I may have never even found the deer add extra 50 Greens in a third pellat I think really made the difference luckily I recovered the deer the next morning
I never order less than 25 # at a time. No one can live off a pound a month in America.
Ben Franklin aka Paul aka dawg ass mf
One tip, Carry a full sized spare. Figure out how to fit it in your car, but carry a full sized spare.
Yep. It’s definitely something this car needs.
Just collect your own piss and make your own powder.
Do a hundred yard test . Nice looking slug , great expansion skirt .
He skin grizz Pilgrim?
Sorry dude but this was a little bit boring. Too much time in your car and not enough shooting. Martin's Station is an awesome place to visit , the trouble is that I've seen it in several videos. I'm sure your other viewers liked it though.
Check out my other Martins focused video. All shooting.
Thanks for sharing your experience and your tips on some of the necessary gear (ladle, mold, lead) and organization. I have been over-filling my flint wallet and its time to have a space for everything and everything in its place. Thanks again.
Great video Ethan. Your regalia is really taking shape
Thank you! Lots of hard work this year
Where was this event?
Every mountain man should know how to change horse shoes ! You did. Good job.
Ethan, great job again .thanks. Welcome to the club, frats, waterpump, and starter. Next time out, bring a small toolbox along . A breakerbar works a lot better on the lug nuts. If you go out, have fun and throw some lead down range . Don't miss out. Be safe, thanks again.
Get you a 1/2inch battery impact and cut slots in a socket to fit your Jack and also one to fit your lug nuts
Will be a must have for trips after this
At least you didn't have to shot your horse. Glad it was the rear tire. Good video.
I like the mountain man run much better than the timing of making a fire and the people get all gamey by using special cloth for their char cloth.
You didn't shoot what the heck Ethan next time shoot😂😂❤
Can you sew and oil/wax a cotton dry bag that will survive the dunking? Three are four folds on the top should keep the opening dry, but I'm not sure about the seams.
I definitely agree on keeping a warm hat around, go into mountain country and it may be in the 80's in the day, and 40's after the sun goes down. A warm head cover goes a long way to keeping you happy.
Bummer that the "Iron Mare" went lame. At least you had a great time at the event. That was always what they told me about hawk handles. Can't say it really aided my throwing. I was good when I practiced a lot. Last time I tried to throw hawks...after a long lull, I was GREAT at breaking handles!
Looks like a great time, worth the drive for sure. Bonus is you found your tire problem and you weren't in rush hour traffic on the interstate!
I'm curious as to where you find your round ball molds, I can find modern molds, but I'm having a difficult time with finding a period correct (1700s to 1800s) 54-caliber mold. (.530 to .535)
Google bag molds
@WilliamSims-yf5wq Thanks for the information. I found Callahan rifles and Acouterments. They are located somewhere in Missouri, my home state (living in Virginia at this time) they have what I was looking for. Has anyone ordered their products? I was just wondering about the quality of the items they are selling.
Larry Callahan out of Missouri
Larry is top notch. I have several of his molds.
@ILoveMuzzleloading Thanks to everyone who replied, "I will be ordering one tomorrow, possibly two, and one of his ladles.
I think vinegar is a historically correct way to sanitize your dishes after, or in substitution if in a hurry.
Try wood ash paste made from your Fire and Water. Then rinse with clean water. Period correct for long hunter or mountain man or revolutionary war and civil war reenactors.
Keep the videos coming! Would love to see what all is being cooked for the pot lucks.
This is the best title of all your videos.
Thanks dude
Please tell us about your eyeglasses (prescription/sourcing). Thanks!
Yep, got it on the way
Ethan, this is such an awesome video. Your breakdown at the end was neat. Hopefully, for the 250th, I, my wife, then 2 years old daughter, will be able to go to Martins Station as well.fingers crossed! I feel you on the supermarket trip, kinda the same way 😅
I hope to see you there dude! Anytime I can help just let me know
Thank you.
I enjoy your videos , very interesting , I do have a question .What is the best practice for care on a browned barrel , just oil , I have heard some use light coat of wax . do you have any advise. thanks
I use oil, I’ve not used wax much myself
Browning is just induced patina, which is just oiled rust. So wiping with oil is how you would maintain it
Love it. Thank you for taking me down Memory Lane.
This guy is a beast
Eastern Maine shooting supplies. Top notch.
Quick question, I have been wanting a charleville for my impression but haven’t found documentation of civilians owning military muskets in the mid 18th century (1750-1760)? Could see it happening just haven’t found any written documentation of this happening any input is appreciated.
While plausible, I agree. It would be better to shift your focus to post AWI or focusing on a Fusil de Chase or another style of “trade gun” for the impression.
@@ILoveMuzzleloading do you know of any smoothbores with a similar style to the charleville? The main thing I love about it is the lock
ATF wants this guy's location
Plus it brings youngsters to the table a little more. With the bigger bullets and small recoil. With our state experiencing chronic wasting disease increasing. This could make the harvest go up. And keep the disease down.
Looks good to me! Almost too much 😂🎉. I’m glad TC is coming Back. Hope the make muzzleloader again.
Awesome
That's pretty fuckin sick
What type of glasses are those? Cause I’m blind and can’t see without mine.
A cool tool, but really mostly about aesthetics. To be period/era "correct" material patches (where fabric use for muzzleloader patches was more than likely in the minority since fabric wasn't cheap, and in some instances nor plentiful) were either precut square or cut off at the muzzle or precut on ball boards for faster loading. Square patches work just as well as round ones. :)
I make and use Gato Feo #1 lube exclusively. I've had more than 50 accurate shots on targets to 75 yards without the need for ever swabbing the bore for .45 and .54 bore rifles (.440 and .530 balls, red stripe pillow ticking). Gato Feo ("ugly cat") is a blend (by weight) of 1part mutton tallow (Dixie Gun Works), 1 part canning wax (Gulf), and 1/2 part pure filtered bees wax. I mix up 1lb/4ozs (by ounce weight, 8/8/4) in a large Ball canning jar done up double boiler style. Stir a bit to get it all blended, pour into a large milk/juice carton and allow to solidify. I cut off 1/4 chunk and put into the Ball jar and double boil til it's remelted. I cut up pillow ticking into 18" long patch strips (whatever strip widths float yer boat), roll them up, dunk into the lube, allow to sit there for a few seconds, pull out with tongs and allow the excess to drip back into the jar (and/or take 2 lengths of wood dowel and pull the saturated strips through them, with the excess dripping back into the jar). I hang off clothes pins or lay down the patch strips to harden, which takes less than a minute. The strips are over saturated which is the key to keeping the tube clean and easy for reloading. Roll up the strips to use for cutting off at the muzzle or cut the strips up as square patches or use a strip to fill up a ball board or two. It's all good, whatever works best is best. Life's short, have fun!
No need for circle patches, square works just as well.
Have you tried paper patching the bullets? No lube, just a thin card wad 'tween powder and PPB.
