I am an athlete and in my own experience, I was told long ago about taking a long breath and keep it in until I count to 10 seconds then let it exhale slowly, then repeat until I feel less nervous, for me changed my life when going to perform in volleyball, but these 6-2-7 technique and the other two described here are definitely interesting. (you've reviewed the book Rise of Superman) "Release" is between the "struggle" and "FLOW" phases, and is the doorway to a "relaxed and alert" state of body and mind (nitric oxide, + Alpha brain waves). I think they are very similar. Would be interested in your thoughts. I speak in public and have found that the pre-speech routine is one of the lesser appreciated / understood elements of public speaking. I've been collecting pre-speech routines from multiple sources for many years. From my experience, it is a game changer. Will be happy to share my notes on request. Let's change the question a bit to "What is a pre-task routine?" A speech is just one type of a task. So below is a more "universal" answer. It is any routine / ritual / procedure / process that you use to change your state (of mind and/or body) from "less optimal" to "more optimal". I think of an optimal state as being one where you are between boredom and anxiety (i.e. FLOW) and you have no distractions, no self-consciousness and no self-centeredness. i.e. you are fully FOCUSED on the task at hand. It could be breathing exercises / meditation / mindfulness / repeating an affirmation / visualization / physical exercise / dancing / a grounding exercise / listening to music / singing a song / reciting poetry / reciting prayers / ... and lots, lots more. Even "Trash-Talking" just before an important competitive sporting game/event, is a pre-game routine employed by many athletes. A pre-speech routine is NOT the same as " preliminary practice sessions before presentation". These are practice sessions i.e. rehearsals. In FLOW language, this is part of the "struggle" phase (FLOW CYCLE = struggle, release, FLOW, recovery). I appreciate this channel but this book is unnecessary. I’m an ER doc & “perform at a high level in front of dozens of people” all the time in vert dramatic situations (full codes). It’s part of the career I chose. Just like 99.9% either feed off of being in front of huge crowds or more likely don’t give a rat’s rearend about the crowds. If someone is worried about the “crowd” or others - they will never be a high performer. “Thoroughbreds don’t know they are even in a race, they just love to RUN!”
