Coming back to this video after watching your latest video. This is exactly what I'm looking for, that is, to just shadow people from different roles, observe their roles. Thank you Amruta.
A video about how I ended up being a tech writer seems like a great idea, but it might take time. In the meanwhile, you might want to check out my blog (amrutaranade.com) where I share my tech writing journey and tips :)
Hello Ma'am it is always refreshing watching your content. I have less knowledge about I.T. I am curious to be a technical writer. Would you mind to let me know what was that you were doing on Mac on Admin Ul jobs page?
One of the most up to date videos I've seen on Technical Communication. Thank you, but I didn't understand any of what you showed us from a work perspective. Can you tell me what I need to learn to better prepare myself for work as a technical writer? What code, programs, editing software etc? What are podcasts I can start listening to so I can better understand?
If you excel in English as a major, know next to nothing regarding programming/coding, and lack interest in engineering, is Technical Writing a career path one should choose?
Flare0080 coding/programming is not actually technical writing in its truest sense. That’s programmer writing, which is different. However, the title “Technical Writer” can mean different things to different people and organizations. It’s a title that’s full of ambiguity and it often overlaps with other things. And depending on the role, you may not be working with engineers. For example, even banks use technical writers to define their processes.
Hi Amruta, I am working as a content writer in an IT consulting firm. Though I am not exactly a technical writer, but I have written release notes, manual product documentations etc for thier software products. I am interested in moving into technical writing. Would you please guide what should I learn or skills I should acquire to get jobs in this domain.
What made you want to go into this field of work? How did you know it was right for you? I’m debating on studying computer science but I don’t know if it’s something I want to do let alone CAN do.
My background is in Electrical Engineering. I was working on designing VLSI chips and also writing the datasheets when I realized that I liked the writing part more than the designing part of my job. I kinda lucked into the career TBH. It does take a bit of trial-and-error to know if you'd like the field. That's why I am a big fan of prototyping career moves before committing to them.
How much coding/software/programming knowledge do you need as a technical writer? Some other jobs have varied in their content areas, or is your job specific to coding/programming?

Amruta Ranade Looking forward on this. I'll check your blog too! I see that technical writing is a must be learned skill since most jobs need writing.

I write developer docs so my content is pretty technical. But there are tech writing jobs that do not require programming knowledge.
Amruta Ranade May I ask if your background/degree in technical communication of C.S. or Programming?
