Excellent video. It covered all the aspects of getting a job in technical writing. Some amazing points I liked about your explanation: 1. Spend enough time to figure out the industry, company and niche that you really would like to be a part of. Do research, analysis, self-study and observe where you are gravitating towards. 2. Figure out your options after point#1 3. Take information calls, research job descriptions and study about the industries, companies that are part of your options. 4. Prepare solid resume, cover letter and portfolio of your work samples. This is very very imp point with respect to any job nowadays. 5. Interview is a two-way process. Interview is not interrogation. You should ask questions to the interviewer about anything related to the job and company. Many people don't do this as they are afraid and think that it is not a good practise. Most of the points discussed in this video applies to the job searching process in any field of work. Thanks for the video!
Great advice, Amruta! I've recommended this video to my technical writing students. Best part for me: "Approach the technical writing job search, as a technical writing project."
This is a very well thought out/paced video with a ton of great info that isn’t always intuitive for us all. Definitely sharing this with friend’s interested in the GRC space as I feel this is highly applicable!
Every technical writing internship or job that I see asks for an engineering background. I am an English major with 4 years of IELTS teaching experience. Now I would want to shift my career to technical writing, and yes, I watched your other video and analyzed if I really want to pursue the same. Where do I start? Could you please guide me on that? Thank you so much in advance.
You’re right-since 2022, companies have been hiring engineers and developers who can use AI tools to write, rather than dedicated writers. And with so many experienced writers now available due to layoffs, it’s really tough for new writers to break in. I wouldn’t recommend switching to tech writing at the moment. It might be better to wait until the AI hype cools off and hiring improves. Just a note: my experience is mostly in software, so other industries might still offer entry-level tech writing opportunities.
Very well explained Ma'am. The way you analysed each questions are really helpful especially since I'm attending a technical interview today. Subscribing your channel right now
Yes! Keyword research and following the tech writing best practices (parallelism, active voice, concise and clear language, and so on) even in your CV and LinkedIn
Hi Amruta, In the written test, if I have to describe my writing experience for Web-based application and Traditional software, then what should be my approach, in terms of writing style ? When I started writing, I got a lot of sentences starting with "I will do xyz, then I will perform abc..."
I have been a Project Manager for 9 yrs now, worked in Product Companies, Tech writing always interested me. I would like to know if it would be a good idea to move into Technical Publications, Writing as a Project Manager, Can you share your thoughts on this ?
Hi Amruta, Loved the video. Really helpful. I am looking for some guidance on adding metrics to tech writing resumes. What kind of metrics can I add? Where do I get the numbers from? Any tips?
There's no standard technical test to become a technical writer. Some companies include a technical round in their interview process, but that varies for each company.
The pay depends on the industry and the company. And I think tech writers can move to an Analyst position, but don't think it makes getting into the field any easier.
I am an information developer with 6 years of experience in a product org. Hope to work with you in the future and learn more from you. Is it possible to bag a tech writing job in Canada from India? If yes, please guide.
I'm just starting out as a technical writer and this video has been a God send for me. Cleared my interview and your tips helped a lot! Thank you!

Hi, very insightful, looking forward to your next one, also please tell which tech writing domains might grow in the future.
My instinct is fintech and healthtech will need more tech writers in the near future.

Could someone please provide information about the technical test required to become a technical writer?
There's no standard technical test to become a technical writer. Some companies include a technical round in their interview process, but that varies for each company.
I like your background. Is this really your apartment with a cgi window landscape, or is the whole background cgi? 🙄
Inquiring minds want to know 🙏🌟
Oh, that's my apartment 😄
@@AmrutaRanade For real? Wow, it's lovely.
Could you provide some mentoring sessions ? I would like to be a mentee, & seek advise.
My mentoring calendar's booked, but the folks over at r/technicalwriting subreddit (www.reddit.com/r/technicalwriting/ ) might be open to it.

Can you share what's it about? I have very limited bandwidth for 1:1 comms
