    This is awsome as always! Suggestion: Why don't you let Rob set up 15 amps the way he likes them. Let them cool for say 2 weeks before you shoot a video, and then pick 6-7 of these amps with his settings and let him blindtest. That would really put his knowledge on test. :)

    • @goddessintriptych7046

      6505mh: By far the best amp here. You can hear how tight it is compared to the other amps, which means you can always dial in a fuller tone to mimic that Orange-y sound if you wanted it (for whatever reason). You'd never be able to do the opposite: make any of these other amps sound as tight as the 6505 mini.
      For the record, I played along blind and thought the Orange sounded decent (still too much low end for my taste) and the Katana was okaaaaay for shredding. Thought everything else sounded like flaming hot garbage- completely worthless.

    Okay, what needs to happen next is for Rob to explain what characteristics he is listening for to determine valve or not. No doubt his hearing and knowledge of sound production are on another level, which only develops after a lifetime of playing, listening to and developing gear. Amazing as usual Mr. Chapman.

    • @goddessintriptych7046
      @goddessintriptych7046 6 років тому +2

      There is a characteristic dynamic bark that you get with tubes that solid state doesn't replicate well. It's far easier to tell in person- in a video, very difficult to tell usually (unless compared with a very high end tube amp that's perfectly dialed-in). I have gear throughout low to high price bands, so that's just my two cents. After playing on this gear for a while, I have a tendency now to strongly-prefer tube-driven gain and effects when I'm in front of the amp.
      These techniques tend to show it the most: Palm-muting (I have a very heavy right-hand and palm-mute very quickly, so I am always chasing a tight amp sound) & alternating between high and low string power chords (full chords as well)

    • @jmcsquared18
      @jmcsquared18 6 років тому +1

      But he always gets the Marshall DSL wrong, in both this video and in the gain version of the valve vs solid state vs modeling challenge video. Rob never thinks the Marshall DSL is valve! What gives with that?? It's one of the best tube amps on the planet, especially the 2018 reissue series.

    • @goddessintriptych7046
      @goddessintriptych7046 6 років тому

      As good as the DSL is, it's a bit more "clandestine-sounding" than tighter amps, like the 5150 tribute here. That clandestine quality can be heard in lower-end heads (like the Hotone's), so if you're really scrutinizing the amp for that sound, you'll screen out everything with that sound and gravitate towards the tighter amps. I recommend watching Lasse Lammert's playlist to listen for this sound, especially the Hotone Head (very clandestine/distant sounding) vs. the ENGL Ritchie Blackmore (E650) or Krank Krankenstein+ which are very forward/clear and tight-sounding amps by comparison:
      ua-cam.com/video/FI4y79muYE8/v-deo.html

    • @jmcsquared18
      @jmcsquared18 6 років тому

      GoddessIn Triptych I don't know what you're hearing, the DSL is very present to my ears. It's a bit fizzier than a 5150/6505 but it doesn't sound far away at all. That's what the valves are supposed to do? Mine does a great job with metal and cleans; although a 5150/6505 would be a bit tighter, it wouldn't be like daylight and dark.

    • @goddessintriptych7046
      @goddessintriptych7046 6 років тому +1

      Isn't there some sort of mid-contour on the DSL as well? I played one in a store a while back and that had one and really liked the controls (I still want to own one some day). One of my favorite Death Metal albums was recorded with it

      Wouldn't really give a good idea of ratings, for example with this one everything would have lost to the orange so you wouldn't know how the others compare, just that orange > everything else. You'd have to do a bracket type where the winners only compete after a play-off round, and it would make the videos take way more than twice as long

      Why one would like any given amp is already subjective. I think it would be a fun one-off if they had Rabea - with his mixing wizardry - come in and squeeze as much blood out of those stones as possible. Just disclose it.

    • @sevenstrings7eve
      @sevenstrings7eve 6 років тому +7

      For sure but it is the internet and it's serious business. People actually watch these videos as if they can tell one amp is better than the other and other people get really upset when their preference doesn't win. I think the way they do these vids is kind of right but they might be better if they did less amps and did far more experimentation. I think a vid with less amps and two guys blindfolded taking turns while two other guys tweaked. Have two of Joss, Lee and Pete playing while Rob and/or Rabea tweak experimenting at first and then get direction based on what the guys are hearing. One of the issue I've noticed with the current setup is Lee is not good at tweaking and Rob is too familiar with gear and he is led by his bias based on his familiarity more than present experience. I don't really care but as I see these vids as nothing more than great entertainment.

I've always liked Orange amps, so I may have some bias there, but it does seem to have been at the top of most lists anyway. Pretty much. I'd still take with a grain of salt because sometimes Lee biases Rob with his comments. After Rob called his own amp 'farty', Lee said 'it has a lot of low end' in a positive tone, and then Rob inferred that he was playing on a sponsored amp. My suggestion is: do what I do and listen to these blindfold challenges without looking at the screen and with studio monitors or high quality headphones if possible.

    Orange > Victory (after being fiddled) > Katana > Peavey > Blackstar > Egnater (needed tweaking - my Rebel 30 is awesome) > Marshall > Hotone. Damn, guess I need to buy a Rocker 15!

      Jonathan Cooper the orange amps really are nice. Personally I love Blackstar.... This ISF control gives it a plethora of options to shape your tone...to go from a Acdc marshall crunch to a heavy tight Mesa Metallica lean tone.

    Phenomenal ear, Rob! Love these blindfold tests! Missed hearing clean settings. So much is revealed about an amp on a clean setting. Much harder to find a great clean sound!

    The Orange sounded best to me, Good crunch without losing the tone. Rob tends to like too much gain though! I'd like to see you do this with clean sounding amps & the Danish god playing.

    The Orange amp...talk about having the "cocked wah" sound...
    LOVED the sound of the unboosted Peavey lunch box.
    Rob did MUCH better this go 'round. Must have been feeling more relaxed. Who knows? But he pretty much nailed five out of the eight . Somewhat restored my faith in his golden ear! Odd that he did not identify his own signature amp.

    I agree with the previous comments - the Orange is first by a long way but then my back up to my Laney LV300T is a Micro Terror played through a Blackstar 4 x 8" - not quite the bass response of a 4 x 12" but better than a 1 x 12"!! Still a fantastic amp and dead easy to dial in

    This just makes me appreciate my Katana so much more. It definitely is a fair competitor to these amps when properly utilized. Its really close to being the better of them.

      Zac Carter Chapman have gone down the drain. As soon as they released their new standard range, they kept the old models, priced them higher and made worse guitars for the same price

    You should do a 'Blindfold Viewer' challenge where you guys know what the amps are but they are then blacked out in the edit. We can score them as we go then you guys reveal at the end.

      GoddessIn Triptych Good point, but not for the casual viewer. Much as I love this channel I'm not watching the videos twice. Plus I think Chapper's smugness and The Captain's sarcastic non-hints when they know and we don't would be highly entertaining.

      +aleh Wrong. Blue channel. Red channel with Gain at 830-900. You can make it sound like any of these other amps with the right pedal in front of it. But none of those ever amps could ever sound as tight as the 6505- it's physically impossible.

    • @garylinch3083

    • @goddessintriptych7046

      I thought the Katana did sound good for soloing, but I just love the tight sound of the peavey. I don't own the mini version (just the 5150 iii), and had no idea the mini had on-board reverb: really tempted to pick one up now.

    • @calt495
      @calt495 6 років тому

      It only has too much gain on one channel, and that channel is great for metal. I've had a Rocker Terror, OR15 and 6505mh. I've sold the other two and only kept the 6505 because of its versatility. The foot switchable clean/rythm/lead channels make it easily the most useable. The Rocker terror was a close second.

  • @fifishitzu

    Rob's auditory acumen is uncanny. His ability to play while blindfolded is quite good. To my ears 1) Orange - natural and precise, just sounded good period even at the all 12 o clock setting. Very impressive. Liked it immediately. 2) Peavey -- beastly but a bit grainy and muddy. Really like the Peavey in the first video. Thought it was the best amp of the over 1000 pounds challenge. 3) Katana - sounded good after tweaking by Rob, sounded harsh before that. 4) Victory - sounded not tight enough before but sounded nice after Rob tweaked it. Obvious to me that tweaking makes it better because everything at 12 would.not do these amps justice. Have Rob dial it in to his liking first and keep those settings. Do the video maybe a week or two later, let him play them blindfolded at those very same settings. Also, keep the reverb the same ( ex use the Rv6 on all of them ) to even out the playing field. Great video. I am sure these amps sound better live in the room as well.

  • @Rygar91
    @Rygar91 6 років тому

    Anyone else surprisingly like a lot of these amps more than the high end amps? In particular the Orange, Peavey, and Blackstar models. Id pick those over almost all the amps played in the other video, besides maybe the Friedman!

    My preferences were the Orange Rocker, Blackstar 50, and Katana. They all had a clear punchy tone. I own a Katana 100 combo and Blackstar HT20 head so I'm biased towards those tones.
    I always recommend the Katana to anyone looking for a good home amp. Tube amps would be as good or better for louder/live use. JMO.
