funny but a real version of this, id love 'chappers figures out what speakers are in a cab'. Speakers make much more difference than pickups and often guitars.
@@JimijaymesProductions Speakers indeed do make most of the difference. However, the fact remains that nearly every speaker cab comes stock with Vintage 30s. If you don't believe me, go look at the back of your cab. It has Vintage 30s. So, if you wanted to test 5-6-7 different speakers, you would need to build your own cabs.

Yes a lot of cabs do have vintage 30s though especially high gain companies but it doesn't need to be custom to try different speakers.
You should do a speaker shootout. Load up a bunch of 1x12 cabs with popular speakers (V30's, Greenbacks, Creambacks, Alnico Blues, etc) and have Rob try and guess what speaker he's playing through.

these amps really sounds great; the mix and mic setup is great. I have'nt tried valve/tube amps, only plugins and captures (they are expensive for a hobbyist). this video convinced me that plugins cannot sound like real tube amps
Then you didn't use the right ones, or the right settings with them or simply not as loud as they did in this video. There are so much more variables with dialing in a plug in or modeler then a tube amp. That's why it is generally harder to get a tone you love, but it is entirely possible nova days. Especially amp captures from Kemper or ToneX (my personal favorite) can be just as excellent sounding as their physical counterparts.
The interesting thing about the 5150 line of amps is that they started as a Peavy and then wound up a Fender produced amp and yet the DNA is only slightly different sounding and requires a very discerning ear to tell the difference when the EQ is dialed properly. I have to say that my two favorite amps from this rundown were the 5150 and the Soldano. That is simply for the drive handling characteristics but if we were looking for a good clean tone I do love me some AC30 tones. Good show Rob your auditory palette is unrivaled good sir. I do agree it is time to put Lee in the blind man's seat and challenge his knowledge.
Definitely cool hearing these amps, was super impressed with that gunned Vox and the Marshalls, Orange and Soldano all sounded bloody killer as well but the Fender was interesting as well. That at least had a cool tone for some bluesy tones so I was pleasantly surprised with that one, all were great amps

35:30 - I love that they're doing this lately, ever since those "lunchbox" amps and all that, because I agree, it doesn't make any sense for most consumers in the world to have like 100W tube-amps and then having to run them low and not getting the saturation and thus "toan". - Not to mention the size and the weight. - And yea, there were combos already, but let's be fair, unless it's for certain music for which that's enough, they tend to not be up to getting the sound. - Myself I now opted for a 20 Watt power-amp and it actually starts to open up at about a third on the master, like you hear it go from a bit dark to that nicely saturated sound (even though it actually sounds pretty good lower than that as well). - At that point, it's on the loud side, but not unbearably so. And I've tried solid-state amps at that kind of volume or higher and they just sound kind of stale. So it seems also tube-driven signals, at lower wattages, into speakers, brings out a nicer or more impactful sound.
Haven’t even watched it yet and I know Chappers is going to nail it. I’d put Chappers ears up against anyone in these tests. You should bring celebs in to compete against him!
My final order was JCM800, Vox, Orange, Soldano, JTM, Fender, EVH, Plexi, so I mixed up the Fender and JTM. I was a lot less certain compared to the guitar blindfold challenge, which I was surprised about since I've listened to a lot of these amps and played them in-stores. However, I guess I'm normally playing very quietly in-stores, and some of them sound quite different cranked. I changed a lot of my answers as I went throughout, since some of them weren't clear until I had heard all of them. The Vox didn't sound too chime-y to me by itself, but after hearing the rest, it was clear that it was the most chime-y, and I wasn't sure if the fourth amp was the Soldano or the EVH until the end when it was clear that was the brightest, highest gain amp, locking it in as the Soldano in my mind. I thought the EVH would have sounded closer to the Soldano, but I think it sounded closer to the Marshalls. Also, I thought number five sounded very Marshall-y, so I was surprised that it was a Fender! I suppose early Marshalls were based on early Fenders, so it makes sense getting an early Marshall confused with a Fender. The Plexi reminded me of my DSM & Humboldt Silver Linings pedal with its fuzziness, and I know that pedal was going for a cranked Marshall with a fuzz into it, so they seemed to have nailed that! The Orange I briefly thought was an EVH, but after changing some of the settings, it was clear it had that thicker, wall-of-sound gain that Orange is known for, so I locked that in as an Orange (glad I found the Orange pretty quickly since my main amp is a CR60!).
I played along and got three. Rob is a mad man. Nice work sir. Question is do you know your equipment history and could you do a blind non audio assessment based on possible specs, myth and lore alone? Belly up to the bar big fella. 😊
!!! My idea for a blindfold video: I love these blindfold challenges, and I'm always fascinated when Chappers can call out a detail like "that's a lacquered guitar". Or "sounds like a maple top" or " those have got to be P90s" My suggestion: take one of those build qualities that Chappers can readily identify, make it one of his choice that he feels very comfortable picking out, and give some serious consideration to what that's doing to the sound, what frequencies come through more clearly when that build detail is used. And THEN challenge the guys in the shop to get that sound quality through other means like amp settings and pedals. See if Chappers can hear the "fakes"
This isn't the real rob , this is an actor with no eyes who is fed a script by Lee a week before shooting. The real rob (with dreadlocks) was abducted by marshell aliens years ago but the video footage here is carefully manipulated.
Great video ! My amp can’t compete in this because it s a clean amp but i enjoy my roland jazz chorus 120 from the 80s with pedals very much. It’s so loud it s crazy! Probably louder then evh 5150
Lee is so right to lean in and switch Rob from neck to bridge pickup. I have always felt Rob over uses the neck / bass sound and things get mushy. He can spot an amp though.
I’m in a motel in country Victoria Aus. My wife sleeping next to me. I have ear buds in on the lowest volume on my ear buds. That orange amp somehow had my earbuds clipping. Great video.
It’s funny with the EVH stuff, I hadn’t really seen it as relevant to me either. But recently I played an EVH guitar through a 5150, and it was really eye opening. Eddie knew what he was doing.
That plexi had a spongy sizzle type of sound that's very present on decaying notes that I hear a LOT in my Quilter problock 200. I use the Quilter as a clean pedal platform amp & wasn't sure what it's gain structure was supposed to be influenced by and... there it is. Very Interesting .
I once had the honor to play over Brain Mays official amp setup while auditioning for the WWRY Musical in Cologne. It was a supernatural godly sound and yes, during the casting, one of the tubes blew out (they had a backup of course) But omg the EVH clocking in at 105db. Had they used the 100W versions of all the amps, they would totally have suffered permanent hearing loss.
Ya know, I 100% get his saying the fender was too bright and brittle, ear piercing etc. I'm sensitive to that as well with amps. However, I loved how it sounded recorded. I bet the in the room sound vs what we heard through the recording is very different. The fender was great recorded.
I really enjoyed this one. It showed that maximum volume isn't always the best sound from an amp. I really didn't like the sound of the Vox. The Fender wasn't good. The Orange was good for what it was if you like a loose distortion. The Soldano would be its opposite with a tight drive. The EVH was for metal only because of the EQ. The 800 was my favorite of the Marshall amps. Even so, it would have sounded better with less gain, as would most of them. There are three amp tones that I really like; the Fender Twin, the Victory RD1 through a 412, and a Fender Champ copy called the Sweet Baby JTA-05 by Joyo.
When you dime a Deluxe Reverb, it has to be on the treble channel with bass at 0 and treble at 10, not on the bass channel with bass at 10. It gets too woofy and lacks gain the way it was setup. I’ve never had an amp that can sound so vastly different when dialed in different ways as a DR. Done right, it screams beautiful bliss.
I like these videos a lot. Maybe as a future idea you could tell him all the amps/guitars/pedals whatnot apart from one. That way he'd have tougher time guessing but still have a proper shot at it
It's true, Brian May's tech has snipped the shafts off all the pots but one on all of his stage use AC30s. Saw it in a gear rundown. It looks damn weird, but keeps anybody from accidentally (or otherwise) screwing with the settings, because Brian doesn't change the settings ever.
This amps all sound different . Its noticable even through UA-cam compression but he knew exactly a model. Orange and Marshal Studio. This 2 guesses are just crazy. How?))
Next challenge , we drop 4x12 cabinets on his foot, and he guesses what they are loaded with. I have a feeling he'd nail it.

I know Lee and Pete are huge advocates for amps being set at 12 o' clock, but Rob makes a compelling case for just diming every amp lol
Nearly all amp controls are subtractive, so why not run them wide open?
No lol they were all so harsh
That's the way to go by yourself. But may not fit in the mix properly... unless the rest of the players EQ their stuff around the guitar's EQ 🤣
As usual, amazing video!
After spotting a Chappers and the Captain video, I naturally clicked. Thats my style, sir!
Fender DRRI on 10 is one thing.
Fender DRRI Treble past 5 is a whole different animal.
Marshall still sounds amazing, and so musical.
This amps all sound different . Its noticable even through UA-cam compression but he knew exactly a model. Orange and Marshal Studio. This 2 guesses are just crazy. How?))
This is friggin hilarious...LOVE this series!!
I love the video buty wow! Some of these tones are, shall we say, challenging.
I agree, just a little reverb would have gone a long way
I want more Chappers!
OK Glenn Flicker, does the amp matter now?! Turns out, there is a DIFFERENCE RIGHT? !!!
