Hi Dr. Simi, thanks so much for this informative video. I wanna ask what’s the best method of hair removal for someone with KP that will help minimise or even prevent further irritation on the skin. Will you recommend; shaving, waxing, hair removal cream, or laser? Or is there another way?

    • @setchan12

Hi Dr. Simi, I developed KP in my mid-20's, and after researching I opted to try chemical peel, which actually removed all of it. But then it came back after a couple of months with a vengence, and now it looks much worse than before. Do you think this is just KP or something else?

3:18 i don’t know why but I started getting emotional when she started talking about this. Because I really relate to the whole not wanting to show my body because of this condition. I have it all along all parts of my legs accept the inner thigh, and I always wear long pants because im self conscious about what others will think. I’m also always uncomfortable when wearing shorts so it gets hard in summer. I never really wanted to peruse a way to get rid of these bumps until recently. I had someone who commented on the way my legs looked and I said I have a skin condition, and they asked if it was contagious. This really got to me and I felt really terrible about it. But I hope by watching this video I’ll be able to self treat and get rid of them for good.

as a south asian teen with severe keratosis pilaris since childhood this video is so so helpful, thank you for focusing on the effects on skin of women of colour, i've got hyperpigmentation from scrubbing my arms in the hopes of getting rid of the condition but am trying to go through the chemical route from now. i find it frustrating that a lot of hydrating body cleansers and washes are so much more expensive in price though

    • @DrSimiAdedeji
      @DrSimiAdedeji  4 роки тому +45

Thank you for watching and taking the time to comment! As you've already noticed, scrubbing the skin leads to irritation and hyperpigmentation which will fade with time and can be helped using topical skin care products that contain tyrosinase inhibitors such as Arbutin, Kojic acid etc. Vitamin A (Retinoid) creams can also help and you may choose from non prescription formulations and preparations that are only available on prescription from a doctor.
CeraVe does a great range of inexpensive hydrating body cleansers including one that contains salicylic acid which helps with KP. Most CeraVe products also contain Niacinamide which helps to clam irritated skin, improve the skin barrier and help to reduce pigmentation. I hope this helps.

I'm 26 and I have kp since I was 4, basically it's all over my body, even in the face, and it never bothered me personally, mentally or socially. As the doctor said, it's a harmless condition and it can be easily treated. I personally don't follow any clinical treatment, I just use a good body moisturizer and that controls any dryness. If that condition makes you feel uncomfortable, I recommend you to treat it with a dermatologist, but it shouldn't have to be an impediment to develop social relationships, so don't worry about that. Or you just can say you have crocodile skin :p that's what I said every time people asked me about my skin and it always made them laugh, cheer up!

Hi. I'm sorry to hear that this is affecting your self confidence so much. if you have tried salicylic acid cleaners and creams and moisturisers containing urea you could also try retinoid cream. Some people report that microdermabrasion also helps although care has to be taken with darker skin tones not to cause hyperpigmentation. Failing that some types of lasers can also help with the appearance of KP. I hope this helps.

Hi Samantha. This is a very common condition and it doesn't cause any physical harm to you but it can cause emotional distress for many people and affect your self esteem and confidence. Its more common for KP to occur on certain areas of the body such as outer parts of arms and legs so if you really have them all over your body, you could try to see a dermatologist for an assessment and possible biopsy. As I mentioned in my video, there are also lots of other skin conditions that look like keratosis pilaris but that are not and a dermatologist will be able to explore these options. I hope this helps.

This is the best KP video on UA-cam. I was just watching a video by the ADA and they provided the following KP tips.
    1. Keep baths and showers short
    5-10 minutes. Use lukewarm
    water.
    2. Use a mild, fragrance- free
    cleanser
    3. Gently exfoliate (AHA, BHA,
Retinoid, or Urea) skin once a
    week
    4. Use thick moisturizer on your
    skin. Look for moisturizers that
have urea or lactic acid in them.
I personally alternate between lactic, urea, and retinoid body lotions.

I didn’t even even know that there was a reason behind Kp I just thought I was the only one that had it

Thank you so much for this video! I've done a lot of research on KP but this has been the most helpful so far. I never would have thought that my preferred, ridiculously hot showers were possibly making my condition worse.

Superb video! I'm Hispanic and I noticed them while in the shower after I scrubbed my upper arm. Now its just a patch of dark spots that won't go away. I will try the CeraVe exfoliator. I will report back!

I have chicken skin. I used to feel so embarrassed about it. Because everyone used to thought that i have some kind of allergy. So they used to get scared to come close to me. Still i m so scared that i will never gonna have a boyfriend because of this 🙂

Thank you for doing this video. I’m still not sure if that’s what I have because none of those images look like my skin still but, I really needed to see someone address what different issues “black“ skin can have. It makes a huge difference

Thank you Tracey! On my channel, I address the difference between Black and Caucasian skin in my skin videos and I also address any differences in terms of medical conditions in my Women's Health videos. For example, certain skin conditions are more common in black skin such as DPNs, hyperpigmentation and keloid scarring and black women are more likely to suffer from certain medical conditions such as fibroids, certain forms of hair loss and Type 2 diabetes compared to Caucasian women.
Even Bacterial Vaginosis has been shown in certain studies to be more prevalent in the Afro-Caribbean/African-American population compared to the Caucasian population.
It's interesting to examine why these differences exist and what we can do about them whilst gaining control of our own health. Hope you find my channel a source of valuable information and education! Stay tuned for more videos on skin and products and ingredients that I recommend that work for our skin. Thanks for your support!

As far back as I can remember, I get "chicken skin" bumps on my forearms by my elbows and my knees. It looks like regular goose-bumped skin that's localized to just those areas, and it's rough to the touch. Maybe this is what I have? I thought it was maybe just constant ingrown hairs.
