This is awesome! I'm donating my body to science when I die and I'm heavily tattooed, so I hope I'll delight at least a few students when they whip off the sheet to see an old lady covered in skull tattoos.
Whenever I see body parts that belonged to an actual person, I always ask myself "how did they die? Why did they choose to donate their body? What was their life like? What kind of person were they?"
My father considered it while on his deathbed. I think it was mainly to save money for funeral expenses so my mom would have more in the bank. But my son was employed at a medical research facility where a lot of these remains end up and I didn't want my dad cut up into bits as it was described to me and thrown into an incinerator anonymously . We opted for cremation at a cemetery but no big fancy funeral.

@@alguemaleatorio8713 I wouldn’t say it was for nothing. The video accomplishes exactly what it was meant to do, which is to teach you about tattoos in a more in depth way than what most people would normally be used to. You can also use some of the information in the video to maybe pass an anatomy or biology final, if you are in that circumstance (this is said as a generality, not directly specifically to you in case that was lost in translation). I think this "I can't get rid of it, so imma just keep it from spreading" makes sense. When I was a kid, I accidentally jammed a sharp pencil into my finger and underneath the skin of that finger, there's still a mark. So I essentially accidentally got a permanent pencil tattoo?
Same on my right middle finger where your joints near your palms are, i had this one very sharpened to hell pencil that i just poked my finger to feel its sharpness, someone bumped into my hand that i was holding the pencil so it pierced my finger, i wasn't able to bend my finger as it got pass my skin when i looked at it a bit closer, it's been years sine that happened and i can see a small black dot at the spot the pencil passed through

One of the most important reasons to not get a tattoo is that the ink is not regulated, or controlled in any way by any government agency. You just don't know what they're putting under your skin. It could be automotive pigment, paint pigment, or who knows what.

Not just the skin: "After tattooing, a part of the injected tattoo inks leaves the skin via the wounded surface. Pigment particles remain in the dermis and absorb light in a specific spectral range causing the color of the tattoo. Another fraction of the injected tattoo ink is removed from the skin passively via lymph or blood vessels or is actively transported by migrating cells. As a result, tattoo pigments are found in the local lymph nodes but are likely also transported to other organs such as liver, lungs or kidney. Experiments with mice suggest that pigment particles of tattoo suspensions are picked up by Kupffer cells inside the liver as indicated by the detection of particles via electron microscopy." "Tattoo inks are suspensions that may contain up to 100 different chemical compounds that may or may not be added intentionally. The coloring pigment is mixed with solvents, preservatives, and various other substances. Although they are injected into the human body, tattoo inks usually do not need to fulfill specific safety requirements in contrast to other substances that are inserted into the human body, such as medical drugs or implants. The exact list of ingredients, if known at all, depends on the practice of each manufacturer. Tattooists and beauticians purchase the tattoo inks directly from suppliers or through the internet ." "Potential hazardous properties of chemicals in tattoo inks include carcinogenic, immunotoxic, and sensitizing properties. Tattoo inks containing hazardous chemicals are frequently found on the European market. The major substances of concern detected in analyzed samples are polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) (43 %), primary aromatic amines (PAA) (14 %), heavy metals (9 %) and preservatives (6 %)." Additionally, German studies have found a that tattooed individuals have a higher rate of liver disease occurring within 10 yrs of tattooing.
Did those German studies note if the sample of tattooed individuals who had a higher rate of liver disease... also lived a wilder lifestyle that included alcohol consumption and/or other substances? I bet that's an important detail. Correlation does not equate to causation.

Microbiologist/Geneticist/Pharmacologist here and tattoos have been happening for thousands of years without causing any problems in 99.9% of people that have had them, even done in unhygienic ways or with inks that contain metals like lead, arsenic, and mercury or other solid compounds. Still, the tiny amounts of ink used make this similar to levels that are in many things we ingest daily including water. Nowadays, tattoos are harmless if the artist is skilled and hygienic, using an antiseptic spray every five or so minutes, and if you aren't allergic to the ink (the most significant risk in a proper studio) or reactive to dyes, usually red which can irritate some people. This video is a bit dramatic; collagen is so abundant, and the inflammation is not that bad, especially if you are relaxed. We have inflammation at all times in the body, but we have an elaborate cellular process to deal with it, or we can even utilize compounds like ibuprofen that can make it minimize it. Tattoo ink does not contain plastics; it contains inorganic pigments such as carbon black, the most common, synthetic organic pigments as colorants (azo dyes or similar dyes), glycerol, ethyl or isopropyl alcohol, distilled water, and some brands use preservatives to reduce contamination risk and to add viscosity. The contaminants in some colors are metals that are discrete molecules or small solids in cheaper inks that do not get used much. The metal molecules are compounds such as iron oxide, chromium, selenium, aluminum, and titanium dioxide (although not in a lot of countries, as a lot of these things are illegal in most regions now). Occasionally, there is beryllium or antimony in trace amounts in some ink brands, depending on the laws in the country. Still, most do not have any toxic metals our cells and the immune system can't deal with in trace amounts, and many countries have banned them. Some of these are already endogenous or included in multivitamins to improve health, included in medications as fillers, vaccines, and other injectable pharmaceuticals as adjuvants and preservatives. Some of these sound nasty, but for comparison, our cells produce peroxide and formaldehyde and other things that lysosomes and other organelles can deal with. Our cellular system and genes can handle a lot and deal with corrupt or senescent cells, damaged or incorrect genes, inflammation due to aging, sunlight, and other natural stress, and more daily. We can even reduce or reverse these things with natural supplements or certain practices and change things epigenetically. I have several tattoos, including standard tattoos, traditional tattoos inked in Borneo/Sarawak with the manually tapped needle method, and I even have deep tissue tattoos where the needles are thicker and pushed much deeper, they create a scar, so if the ink fades or you get laser removal, it is still visible due to it being a scar because it is deep and essentially cut in. Tattoo aftercare is simple and hygienic with bepanthan cream or a high-quality tattoo cream that is made for tattoos and keeps the ink in whilst being antiseptic so no infection occurs. The key is don't get cheap tattoos and don't get them done by a professional artist who isn't both skilled and hygienic and look after it properly while it is healing, then you won't have any problems.
The Yakuza have resorted to purchasing livers in order to deal with their liver failure from full body tattoos. Tattoed skin does not sweat which can lead to liver toxicity and the need for liver transplant.
I’m taking Anatomy right now online and the definitions can be daunting, but the visuals you provide with breakdown makes learning relatively painless. THANK YOU.

@tyrastarrweaver I think they keep them stored in embalming (?) fluid when not in use, as you can when they do the up-close shots a little bit of clear fluid on the body part, plus their gloves always get wet during the demo.
I liked this video and have seen others that you've done. I'm a professor in a school of nursing, and I appreciate how you can explain A&P in a way that makes sense to a lay person - also appreciate the cadavers. One thing I was hoping you would touch on in this one is the heavy metals that are in all tattoo inks - each color has a predominance of a specific heavy metal. They have been linked to increased sensitivity in general in people, including joint replacements when they become necessary - that good ol' well-meaning inflammatory process.

This video isn’t necessarily saying tattoos are bad (relative term), but explaining how each anatomical layer works and why tattoos stay in place. As a medical double major myself, this was a simple refresher.
I find it rather disingenuous that a person that should know the human body better than most is saying tattoos are neither good nor bad. Especially when you know for a fact that the body’s immune system actively tries to get rid of them. How can anyone look at this and objectively say tattoos are good or not bad, especially when you realize they’re functionally useless? They do nothing except to elicit a certain aesthetic.
Saying that something is functionally useless only bc it serves a certain aesthetic purpose is to say that art is useless and unnecessary to humans. @@dukeonwheels
@@Laura-ob4om That’s reaching. Art is necessary. Tattoos are not. The human body and its design is a work of art in and of itself. Putting tattoos on it is akin to vandalizing a building with spray paint. But it’s even worse because you’re purposely introducing a foreign, inorganic substance into the body that it is not designed to break down. How the body responds to tattoos should be a telling indicator of how they should be treated.

@@whitemoonwolf13 Hey there! Like Kippy has said, Saniderm is a great way to heal your fresh tattoo. Saniderm uses a process called wet healing and, by doing this, speeds up the healing process, reduces itching and scabbing. The recommended instructions are to keep the first piece on for 24 hours since this will fill up with plasma. Take the first piece off, wash with antibacterial soap (Saniderm sells foam soap), pat dry, and replace it with another piece. That piece can stay on for 4-6 days. Afterwards, you can use moisturizer, like our all natural Sanibalm, to keep your tattoo hydrated for years to come! Hope this helps 🙌
So a tattooed persons white blood cells will just stay put, holding down that ink for all their life time? That's a full time job with no pay. That's punishment.

This makes me wonder if a person with a lot of tattoos has a slightly weaker immune system since the body has to waste energy throwing white blood cells at the ink to contain it, and replacing those cells over time.

Im a tattoo artist and found this very interesting! Every time i felt i needed to comment something he would mention it, everything except why stretching the skin during a tattoo is so important? Its like drawing on a deflated balloon. If you dont stretch it out, it doesnt turn out right.
I’m not a science teacher or anything but my guess is that the dense cells on the epidermis creates crinkles in the skin and the tattoo tool needs smooth surface to properly glide the ink. It’s like trying to iron a shirt that came right out of the dryer without straighten it out- the iron wouldn’t be able to effectively smooth out the wrinkles without you straighten out the shirt

Well, anatomy is all he does. Let's hope he's excited about it.
Not just the skin:
"After tattooing, a part of the injected tattoo inks leaves the skin via the wounded surface. Experiments with mice suggest that pigment particles of tattoo suspensions are picked up by Kupffer cells inside the liver as indicated by the detection of particles via electron microscopy."
"Tattoo inks are suspensions that may contain up to 100 different chemical compounds that may or may not be added intentionally. Tattooists and beauticians purchase the tattoo inks directly from suppliers or through the internet ."
"Potential hazardous properties of chemicals in tattoo inks include carcinogenic, immunotoxic, and sensitizing properties. Tattoo inks containing hazardous chemicals are frequently found on the European market. The major substances of concern detected in analyzed samples are polycyclic aromatic hydrocarbons (PAH) (43 %), primary aromatic amines (PAA) (14 %), heavy metals (9 %) and preservatives (6 %)."
Additionally, German studies have found a that tattooed individuals have a higher rate of liver disease occurring within 10 yrs of tattooing.

Tattoos are bad!
@@daddybendover69 Oh yeah im destroying my body using drugs, tats, piercings, you name it. Im so raad yo!
@@HH-ni5hm lol you're not clever
I like the lack of judgement in this video. I've seen a few similar videos that were very judgemental of tattoos.
This makes me wonder if a person with a lot of tattoos has a slightly weaker immune system since the body has to waste energy throwing white blood cells at the ink to contain it, and replacing those cells over time.
Your body is a mechanism meaning your immune system never stops working irregardless of what it is especially something it's commonly used to /seeing
I had the same thought.
Well i have 2 tattoos on arms and since last year when i get my first tattoo and then second fww months later. Surprising my immunity system is way bwtter than it was before. + I losed good amount of weight and since start of last year i wasnt ill not even little , even though i runned in winter , or was out in rain or when wind was strong

Im a tattoo artist and found this very interesting! Every time i felt i needed to comment something he would mention it, everything except why stretching the skin during a tattoo is so important? Its like drawing on a deflated balloon. If you dont stretch it out, it doesnt turn out right.
That makes sense! I've used a sharpie on a balloon & then inflated it for sure
Wow
Could that be explained or?..
@MStay lit it’s not bad, it’s not exactly good either but the trauma it produces are tolerable for our anatomy
This dude just answered so many questions for me. Every time I get a tattoo I always sit there wondering how it all works and how it manages to stay intact
I honestly watched this because of Jungkook.🤣 Hi army! 💜

One of the reasons I was to resist the temptation to own a tattoo. Today it is rare to find people without tattoos.
It could be a reason, why some men want to go overseas? Not all though.
I blame the plainness of modern clothing
@@kathleenking47 wtf does tattoos have to do with men going overseas lmao
I’m a rarity, and I love it.
Now i I wanna see how the cells in “Cells at Work” would react to being inked
That sounds like a great idea!
That anime has a lot of potential... they should do more seasons... a drug addict cells... would be so eductational andmaybe add some story on the persons's body something like "Osmosis Jones" (Bill Murray like-character or so)

Are we just gonna ignore the fact that he had REAL HUMAN SKIN
Like, I know it's for scientific purposes. But it's still creepy to watch him touch skin that used to be *part* of someone.
People do donate their bodies to scientific research.

Hello, Clarice.
I am so glad it has never occurred to me in my entire long life to get a tattoo

If this guy was my teacher at school, I’d probably be a doctor by now.
I took 2 semesters of of A&P and I wish this guy was my teacher, I worked in the same hospital for 33 years, in California was a phlebotomist & EKG technician…this is a great video……
my ap professor walked in the door, said "pay attention you'll be better at sex" we listened to her lol
I had a medium sized upper arm tattoo disappear completely. Years later I had another done in nearly the same place and that one faded away completely as well. On number three now and the only thing I've learned is that tattoos get more expensive the older you get.
I knew a guy who couldn't keep red ink. All other colors held just fine with the expected aging, but not red ink. Maybe you guys have some weirdly strong white blood cells?

Stab wounds stay forever. Ugly 50yrs ago. Ugly now. Guy didn't charge me to do it

never thought about tattoo artists having to take into account varying skin thickness before! Very interesting :D

A party trick in our studio was guessing peoples lifestyles and jobs/careers by the makeup of their skin!
We can tell a lot by someone's skin and the variety in how it is to work with and how it responds is huge and very interesting! I'm a decade in to tattooing and still come across new skin types and clients all the time!
Very interesting, especially about skin thickness and blowout. Tatooing requires much more knowledge and finesse than I originally thought.
I'm very prone to auto-immune problems and really just have an inflammatory reaction to pretty much anything. Prone to eczema, easily get heat rash, also just random pains and itches in general. I'm afraid getting a tattoo would just bother my body a little too much.
EDIT: I love all the different comments you’re all sharing! (But the ones who think tattoos are ugly in general... that’s not what this is about and is kind of a useless thing to mention here.) And I really do think in the end, everyone is different and you’re the one who knows your body the best! To those suggesting a tiny swatch test; very clever idea! ;)
No one asked.

It's crazy how I learn more in a youtube video than I do in biology and an actual health science class
I have learnt so much from this. It made me fall in love with science all over again after graduating university for over 5 years now.
I feel exactly likewise, Adaobi. As a PhD graduate in communication sciences in speech therapy since 2019, till date I still feel like a student. I enjoy every bit of it. Very well presented 👍🏾
I’m Nigerian/British, btw 😊
I’ve had a couple tattoos now, and I can personally attest to saniderm. Great product, and water proof, so you can shower with it. Great video, learned a lot about the anatomical side of tattoos.
he talks about it with so much passion unlike most teachers which just made very interested in anatomy
I’ve been in the process of getting tattoos removed. I’d love to hear how removal happens/works 😊
I asked him to explain that as well. I just completed 10 rounds of the PICO Laser removal and mine is 95% gone.
Yup! Mine is about 90% gone now lol
I’ve been procrastinating on what could/should be my last session. The pain sucks even with numbing lol
What does that cost, generally speaking, and does it cost more than getting the actual tattoo? I realize this is a broad question, but any information would be helpful. I assume it's multiple sessions depending on the ink choice too.
@@mkl5448
Cost depends on the size of the tattoo. I’m removing 4 small ones and it’s about $160 a session. I’ve had 5-6 sessions and might need one more (if I choose) So, yes, it’s more expensive than the tattoos I have.
I recently saw an online dissection of tattoo lymph nodes, not pretty, black and green saturation, exactly the same colour as the ink used to create them.
I didn't quite get how it got into the lymph nodes in the first place. Can u please explain

I just had breast cancer surgery, I had dye injected into my breast and it travels to the first couple of lymph nodes under your arm, and dyes them blue. The surgeon them knows which are the first lymph nodes and can remove them to see I the cancer has spread.Thankfully for me it hadn’t spread
