Those were a nice couple of videos! I thought you narrated both of them quite well too! No crazy screaming, hooting and hollering. No swearing or any other vulgarities. Just calm, cool and collected descriptions of what's going on and other info. That was fun fishing! Great work!
We're vertical jigging from a boat. Have not tried the jerking from the beach. If you glide that rig near the bottom from shore, with a few twitches, it should work fine.
Hi John and thanks for putting up all these videos to accompany and enhance your books. I shared this and part 1 on facebook with the following comments: 21" size limit. Would be 21cm in the uk / eu. Maximum catch limit would simply never happen! No wonder we cannot begin to rival the quality of fishing on this side of the Atlantic, compared to the Eastern seaboard of the USA.....
John, you and Mike are really catching great "Flatties." We here in TX. would be very happy hooking them that fast; and a 20 inch Southern Flounder would go nowhere else but in the box. Great footage.
Thanks for being so informative, Really helps. I'm fishing out of Niantic Ct. usually party boats. I try to use the information provided within your videos. Really appreciate your insight. Thank you.
I'm not familiar with barnegat, but I've done this successfully at those depths in the ocean off shinnecock LI. You'll have trouble if you have a windy fast drift though.
We don't bleed the fluke, but I agree it's probably a good thing to do. The one time I tried it everything came home a bloody mess. We vacuum seal the fillets, and they're still good a year later. If I had more working space I'd prefer to have two coolers, one for bleeding and one for icing the bled fish.
@fishingdaybyday I would not use wire when fluke (flounder) fishing. Stay down, and hopefully the blues won't bother you. Since doing this video I've actually switched from SPROs to homemade jigs that are nothing more than unpainted leadheads. These simple cheap jigs work just fine. It's the Gulp they're after. When blues are around, we reel like crazy to get our jigs to the top when it's time to run uptide.
I use 15 lb spider wire stealth braid ! When I bring my own pole . Most of the time I use what they have on the seven bs in narr ri. Charter boat . I've been a fan of yours for the past year only because I just found out about who you are and what u do . I have been fishing for years and never had the knowledge I have since I've been watching ur videos . Also ur a top selling author . I noticed one of ur books at the Rhode Island convention center saltwater fishing show . Once watching ur utube channel I put two and two together . I can learn so much from u . My name is David Medeiros I live in Cranston ri and do most of my fishing in Warwick and south Kingston north Kingston galilee and just about anywhere there is a shore line. Thank u for responding and thank u for all u give to the fishing world .
+David Medeiros You're using the correct line. There are some areas where the current runs too hard for this kind of light tackle fishing, and you're forced to use a lot of weight. If that's the case, consider a Blue Frog deep diver bucktail. They make them up to 8 ounces with the right size hooks for fluke. They're popular for deep jigging in the ocean here. Use the same dropper rig I describe in my videos and try a 5-inch gulp swimming mullet on a plain hook for the teaser. I spent a (non-fishing) weekend on the rhode island coast last fall. Very nice there. I bet some of those South County beaches have fluke. I think I've dealt with relations of yours for the RISAA show.
It might be your hooks. We use Gamakatsu 604 6/0 hooks in our one-ounce. Those are similar to the SPRO 3/4-ounce hooks. 1-ounce and heavier SPROs have a much bigger and thicker hook that I find tough for fluke fishing, which is why I make my own.
Dude, you guys were slayin them !!!!! looks like you have the right spot and the right rigs. I will have to find them to try down here in Va. great video, new sub !!!
Really like this fishing. I am fishing in Ireland, but for a piece of mackerel or lugworm. Didn't try yet the jigging, but is so good in your movie. Best luck...
Ian, it depends where you're fishing, how deep, how much lead etc... For this depth you can get away with 10-20 pound test with light to medium action rods depending if you're using bucktails, live bait or chicken rigs
Hi john u gave some tips last year and I had good luck got many on the same rig but the big one was on a big piece of hearing well on a blue fish and bass trip was over 14 pounds I hope to make it out to groton cr again to go on the Hel-cat
Thank you John. Great Video with so much to learn. One question I have, would you use the same Rig and technique if you were fishing in west coast? I usually fish in San Pedro and Newport Beach Area.
hey idk if you mentioned the action of your rod, my computers been lagging for some reason. Im gonna build a custom fluke rod and was wondering what action power and line weight would be best. thanks great vids. all of em!
John, Thank you so much for replying to all my comments over the years. As Christmas is approaching my Christmas list is being developed. I would like to get a new rod for Xmas. I love buck-tailing off of party boats, off of shore and one day I hope to have a kayak and do what you do. I am contemplating between a Lamiglas and a St. Croix Rod. I noticed Lamiglas made buck-tailing rods. I would fish light tackle like you. Which rod would you get and what size rod, action, lure and line weight?
your videos are nice man your a good guy and let lots of nice fish go your a true fisherman like me to i throw alot back and keep only some becuase i do eat them also but i have a high respect level for you skinner
Good day Mr Skinner , ? Why is it when I go on a party boat in 70 ft of water we mostly use 6 oz to sometimes 12 oz sinkers and u can drop a buck tail that ways no more than 3 oz and get it to the bottom ? I would love to know how I could do this . Thanks and I've learned so much from ur channel !!
Great video. I fish Tangier Sound in the Chesapeake. Do you think this would work here. I drift 20 - 40 ft on steep ledges. I have been fishing for flounder here for the last 10 years and the fishing has been awesome until the last 3 years. The fish are no longer coming up the bay. I have caught as many as 100 flounder in just 4 hours. The last 3 years I have only 15 fish in 12 trips. Have you see any decline in LI sound?
Hey, JS I really like your videos and they have helped me improve since my early fishing days...I was just wondering what rod and reel your buddy was using, thanks!
Hi JS, Just went out last weekend in NJ opening day and outfished all my buddies.. 5 fluke with 1 keeper! quick question for ya, when would you use a teaser and when you would not? Thanks!
John Skinner Fishing Thanks! I actually went out again on 6/1 (note i am a kayak fisher). Caught 14 fish with 4 keepers in NJ. i swear by your method and book lol! I am trying to get better at selecting the right jig weight, but right now im just choosing a heavier one, and i think that resulting of most of my hits on the teaser.
So basically you can employ the same "jerking" technique from the surf right? The only difference you have to slowly reel it in. I like experimenting so I tried it today from surf and it worked just fine, got one. Actually it was my very first fluke this season. 18,5 inches (just 1 inch short :P ). Pretty good result for Brooklyn surf flukeing. Last year I caught 1000s of them from surf and NOT A SINGLE KEEPER, not even close to 18 inch.
Hi I fish the LIS also, from Bridgeport ct directly across from LI NY which the ferry from here to there run "port Jefferson", I been using gulp with jig fishing off dock and sometimes shore, any advice on catching more fluke ,I also use gulp shrimp but separately help lol
Thank you for the good videos, I live in Florida on the Gulf of Mexico we have a size limit of 12 inch flounder...why is your size limit so high? Also have you heard of anyone using your technique in the Gulf of Mexico?
Thank you for the great video!! I mainly fish for fluke in Huntington Bay and out off Eaton's Neck in the Sound When you drift for fluke, do you drift drop-offs from high to low or do you try to stay on one side going along the ridge of the drop-off?
John, GREAT videos. I am anxiously awaiting spring! I wanted to know how often other species will chase this bucktail/gulp with dropper loop rig? I have a quantum bait caster that is rated for 120 yards of 12 lb test on a 6 foot light action rod just laying around (I used to use this setup for trout) that I want to dedicate specifically to fluke. I ask what else will chase this because with only 12 lb test on a light liiiiight action rod I am nervous that even a schoolie striper would snap the line. Do you think I will have any issues with the noted setup?
Im going fishing out of belmar tomorrow with the spro bucktails and gulp. The bottom is kind of rocky there and I know when we were dragging bait with weight we got snagged on the bottom a lot. Do you have any advice for preventing that and not losing my rigs? Also when you feel the fluke bite on the bucktail should you wait a few seconds before setting the hook or set right away?
do you think this light tackle would work in the ocean? In about 40-50 ft? also are you familiar with Barnegat Bay in NJ? if so do you catch fluke in there?
John, I know when fluke fishing sea robins can be pretty aggressive. I eat them so I don't mind them too much, Do you find you catch less sea robins using this method?
I used the exact same rig I hooked one fish but he got off and I get lots of bite but when do I set the hook the moment it bites or wait a second or two
I'm a Native Long Islander and I fish off of Piers. Do you have any helpful videos to help fisherman catch fluke off of piers? Because I always have trouble catching anything. I use the same Bucktail you have and the same gulp on a fish and Bucktail rig. But I still have trouble. It's frustrating.
Those were a nice couple of videos! I thought you narrated both of them quite well too! No crazy screaming, hooting and hollering. No swearing or any other vulgarities.
Just calm, cool and collected descriptions of what's going on and other info. That was fun fishing! Great work!
WOW what a great video John, for so many reasons, I'm glad I found this. Lets hope somehow the fluke fishery returns even more so this year.
We're vertical jigging from a boat. Have not tried the jerking from the beach. If you glide that rig near the bottom from shore, with a few twitches, it should work fine.
@27hilltopper
I used to bucktail them there a long time ago. Great place for fluke.
10 years ago, wow where did it go? Happy New Year John , you and yours.
@chilza321
We are vertical jigging in 20- to 25-feet of water using 15-pound braided line.
Hi John and thanks for putting up all these videos to accompany and enhance your books.

About a foot. See here the "underwater drift view" video on my channel.
flip camera, 18-26 feet.
@xxxtremesportsxxx
We're east of Port Jefferson.
I've caught many 15- to 30-pound bass using Gulp Worms on tubes. There are "tube and worm" videos on my channel
@mtednby21
A lot of people call fluke "flounder" south of NY. We also have "winter flounder" which are different than fluke.
White is great. I use swimming mullets 4-inch.
@striperlouie
I have no favorite tide. I just try to avoid the wind against the current.
I don't, but some people do well with gulp tipped bucktails.
I don't know about gulp worm alone. That rig will definitely work from a dock. I was catching from shore with it yesterday.
Really like this fishing. I am fishing in Ireland, but for a piece of mackerel or lugworm. Didn't try yet the jigging, but is so good in your movie. Best luck...
May and June where I am (LI Sound)
Ian, it depends where you're fishing, how deep, how much lead etc... For this depth you can get away with 10-20 pound test with light to medium action rods depending if you're using bucktails, live bait or chicken rigs

Don't fish too heavy. Try to glide above the rocks. I set the hook almost immediately when I feel weight.
The latest video that I posted on my channel shows this and the complete rigging.
Should work fine there. We've had plenty of fluke in LIS up until a couple weeks ago.
Congrats! Nice Tips and Info. Thanks. I'll go to City Island get a rental boat from Jack Bait and Tackle and try to find a spot like that.
16-ft starcraft with a 40hp.
That's a keeper, nice video, I can almost smell the low tide coming. Flounder is so tasty good:) I think people would get sick of Beef all the time.
4-inch swimming mullets white or green.
Thank you John. Great Video with so much to learn. One question I have, would you use the same Rig and technique if you were fishing in west coast? I usually fish in San Pedro and Newport Beach Area.
Yes.
Our limit is down to 19 inches now. Our fish run bigger than yours. I've caught flounder in Pine Island Sound in SW florida on gulp and bucktails.
Mine is medium action, 8-17# line.
hey idk if you mentioned the action of your rod, my computers been lagging for some reason. Im gonna build a custom fluke rod and was wondering what action power and line weight would be best. thanks
great vids. all of em!

WOW! in Florida on the Gulf coast they have to be 10 inches or 12 inches, and by the way u have some good videos!!

I use a teaser all of the time now. I might eliminate it if I was casting from shore and needed distance.

Not that I can see. I use swimming mullets 4-inch now
John, What size drift sock would you recommend for a 20' boat doing similar drift fishing in western long island sound?
So basically you can employ the same "jerking" technique from the surf right? The only difference you have to slowly reel it in. I like experimenting so I tried it today from surf and it worked just fine, got one. Actually it was my very first fluke this season. 18,5 inches (just 1 inch short :P ). I try to drift along the slope most of the time, but the drift direction will dictate what's possible in a particular spot.
John, GREAT videos. I am anxiously awaiting spring! I wanted to know how often other species will chase this bucktail/gulp with dropper loop rig? I have a quantum bait caster that is rated for 120 yards of 12 lb test on a 6 foot light action rod just laying around (I used to use this setup for trout) that I want to dedicate specifically to fluke. bass, blues, seabass, pretty much whatever is around.
I use bunker for fluke in Sandyhook and 4 inch gulp and caught a fluke 15 inches
Hi John, what is the best month for fluke fishing ? thanks alot for the video, GBU
I bet you miss taking your kids out with you. Looks like a great day.
Do you just tie on the bucktail on the line. You don't put any splitshots or fishfinders etc on right?
Im going fishing out of belmar tomorrow with the spro bucktails and gulp. The bottom is kind of rocky there and I know when we were dragging bait with weight we got snagged on the bottom a lot. Do you have any advice for preventing that and not losing my rigs? Also when you feel the fluke bite on the bucktail should you wait a few seconds before setting the hook or set right away?
do you think this light tackle would work in the ocean? In about 40-50 ft? also are you familiar with Barnegat Bay in NJ? if so do you catch fluke in there?
Would a spro jig and a regular twister tail grub would work as well or only the Gulp grubs?
Thank you very much just making shire but will that rig work from dock and can I use the gulp sandworm alone to catch fluke and bass?
I don't charter. Try "luv2fish" out of port jeff.
I wish, but it does almost eliminate crabs.
I don't think it would work as well as Gulp, but it would work.
We fish in Raritan bay NJ and have had years catching over 500 fluke. This year is not as good as previous , do u know why?
John, I know when fluke fishing sea robins can be pretty aggressive. I eat them so I don't mind them too much, Do you find you catch less sea robins using this method?
How is white Live Minnow Grub instead of green? Also what other gulp types have you had success with?
Do you think gulp sandworms could catch fluke or striped bass and could you do a review or test?
Where do you launch for Long island sound? And where do you drift? just anywhere?
Do you take people out on charters?, I live in DutchESS county, NY,I have my own kayaks all the right gear, I just need a bit more help
This would be similar to a pier. ua-cam.com/video/EDry09-xWDg/v-deo.html
what color bucktail do you usually use for fluke and striped bass
can you please tell me which spot (N.J) I should go in beginning of Aug, to catch fluke
thanks
just west of mattituck.
Is there any difference between the gulp alive grub or mullet.
Not seabass, but porgies rarely.
Exactly what kind of reel are you using?
wow thats a lot of fish, i have a boat and we fish in the great south bay. We dont catch anything near that! At the most we catch 2 fluke.
Do you charter or could you recommend a charter, for this area?
6-footer rated 8-17# line
bucktail for me
but do you think pink is a good color for fluke
i know its spro and i dont have that color do all colors work?
berkley should be cutting you a check my friend. Great job !!!!!!
What kind of boat do you have and motor size?
How heavy of a rod are you using?
are fluke and flounder the same fish?
how do you hook the mullet on?
What kind of line are you using?
where in long island sound are you
last year my cousin pulled one up tht was 35 inches it ws the biggest fluke i have ever seen
i was in new jersey this summer and i caught a nice fluke off the beach sadly it wasn't a keeper
@jskinner5278 have u ever used fake whole squid
that's a great 2 hrs ..very nice
Mt Sinai or Mattituck. Fish near buoys 5, 7, 9, 11
