Fresh out of college I built my own fishing poles with the extended back to 'lock in' to my elbow when fighting a fish. Mine was a fly rod blank converted into a spinning outfit for trout. Glad to see others are finally after 30 years of my fishing are catching on the the convenience of the extended handle. I was not the original person to come up with this, but when I decided to build that style pole the rod builder whom I bought the materials from explained to me exactly how to build it. Works today even though the grommet that holds the two poles together is beginning to fail.

Wow. I tried your technique yesterday! With the bucktale and the glass minnow. I kind of experimented. I had one rod sitting there with a hi low skirt rig with spearing on both hooks, and the other rod is your technique. Turns out I only caught one fish on the spearing rig and all the other plenty of fish took the glass minnow with gulp! John, you should do a video like this to show how much better it works with your technique!
Very good video John. You explain things very well. I live near Chincoteague & Wachapreague Va. and we fish for flounder here quite a bit. I use very similar rigs and tackle here and have found the gulp products work well for flounder. The new mantis shrimp gulps are really performing well this summer. Just FYI. Let me know if you ever head down this way.
You ever try a double drop shot with freshwater gami worm hooks the gulps? I just found they are far more effective then putting the gulps on a bucktail? Just curious what you think?
Thanks for the great vids and book. Really learning a lot. UW vids are super. If you really want to speed up fishing change to a left hand reel. No swapping. Really helps most when casting a lot though. Please tell me why you never cast out and reel the jig the bait back.

Hey John..thanks for all you do to help the sport..my question has to do will the reel . On my setup I use a 3000 series spinning reel .. thought I give the bait caster a try..picked up a quantum accurist PT - 6.3:1 gear..15lb power pro line..use 1 to 1 1/2 oz buck tail .. fish in 25 - 50 feet of water.. at times with current.. seems with the bait caster the line comes off the reel much slower causing scoping.. don't have much experience with these type reels... just curious how you set yours up..I see there are two adjustments on either side of the spool..thanks ...rod is a st croix pc70mf

Followed this to the T and it produces Fluke over and over here in South Jersey. In calm water and choppy water as well. Have you had any success with pink Gulp or Gulp shrimp in different colors?
@@JohnSkinnerFishing thanks! We usually use a trolled herring early in the spring until live bait arrives. Live bait has been on fire recently and now I see some fisherman throwing swimbaits as well.
John, I fish long island and my boat is located in flanders bay. Whereabout on the sound are you fishing (east or west side, etc.)? I can drive to orient point in about 1 hr to 5.5 hrs in good conditions and I just want to know if it is worth the journey.
On the rig.. Is tying the top teaser closer to the bucktail a good idea? I seem to tie mine around 6-8in apart with the same rig. Wondering if i should extend it to the 12in like you do for this season
This water appears so calm and waveless is it in the ocean? I went on my daughters boat yesterday @ traders cove marina on mantaloking Nj I was so disappointed to catch nothing.. the whole bay says it’s 5-7 feet of water deep I was surprised how shallow the water is ... is it possible to catch keeper fish 🐟 it 5 feet of water ?

When tying the braid to your rig I noticed you use a barrel swivel, do you ever tie braid to fluorocarbon direct? I noticed that a lot of the guys I fish with don't use swivels when jigging, does it make a difference?

dennis mako I don't chunk the beach, so I couldn't do anything with that. Seems like a good year for it. Lots of sharks close to shore on the bunker schools.
Really have enjoyed your videos so far, JS. Went out twice on party boats off N.Shore, LI. Not much luck out there with gulp & shrimp rigs. Do you recommend any differences on party boats? On one trip, the bucktails wouldn't hold bottom - switched to a 4oz Fluke ball w/ bucktail and gulp and a teaser w/ a gulp. not much luck there either
hjltax The Port Jeff and Mattituck Partyboats fish the same areas I fish. You can see one of them in the background of this video. I'm sure this technique works there. It sounds like you had tough conditions if you needed 4 ounces.
hjltax Make sure you are using braided line! That thin diameter is everything when jigging with light bucktails. John uses 15lb braid i believe, i use 20lb.
John Skinner Fishing Actually fished out of Huntington. The first time, not crowded, so bucktailed only. 2nd Trip, crowded and fished in deeper water. I may have been holding bottom, but was continuously got tangled with others. Finally switched to Fluke ball to reduce chances of tangling. Thanks for answering.

We fish usually in 8 to 20 feet of water the current is usually running at a decent pace. 1/2 TO 3/4 OUNCE BUCKTAIL AND A 1/2 ounce grub lure any suggestions would help and be much appreciated

Has anybody tried this for Plaice in the UK? I've been trying for the last 2 years to catch a flatfish on a lure with no luck so would be interested if anybody has had any luck with the same techniques?

Get the 3/4 to 1 1/2 7 foot heavy tsunami classic rod I own three of them and I also own the Nexus jigging rod definitely a great rod for using heavier bucktails for fluke But I also get away with using a 1 1/2 oz Bucktail and a 3/4 oz teaser on the Nexus 7 foot heavy action jigging Rod in 15 to 40ft of water super nice rod

Nick Rossi I would look for a baitcasting rod 6-7 feet that is good with 15-20# braid. It doesn't need to be high end. Just something that handles 3/4-1.5 ounce nicely.

Absolutely. Many nice fluke are caught from the "skinny water" of Long Island's South Shore bays.

Are you using 15# or less braided line? If so, I think you're looking at 3/4- to 1-ounce bucktails in that environment.

+Jarek Czarnecki You need to spool braid on very tightly when you fill the reel. Then it won't dig.

What oz glass minnow do you use?
Hey John, just a quick question. I'm relatively new to fishing like this. If I wanted to use a more conventional/baitcast setup like that with the reel on top, does it matter what type of rod I buy, or is there a specific type I should invest in? Thanks.
Nick Rossi I would look for a baitcasting rod 6-7 feet that is good with 15-20# braid. It doesn't need to be high end. Just something that handles 3/4-1.5 ounce nicely.
