Every time i watch your new videos i literally grab my gear and go down to the marina!! Thanks for keeping me motivated and constantly showing everyone tips.
Very insightful videos. Your humility when catching fish is quite refreshing. Some have curbed their enthusiasm others have not...keep keeping it real.
Good sign of a experienced fisherman. The other guys are talking and socializing and you Putting fish in the box. My Late Father always told me you can talk and socialize after the trip. Nothing wrong with it but time is limited and you can’t catch them if your line is not on the bottom. I have never caught one on the couch.
Very interesting John... It always amazes me how "finicky" these fish can be at times... Whether it be the color of our lures, the type of bait, etc... From day to day and tide to tide... Nice to see pro angler John G. Halkias showing off his netting skills... LOL!
J and H owes u. I just picked up the rod and reel and a bunch of glass minnows and John Skinner buck tails and of course a bunch of WHITE 4 inch gulp..... so I guess I have to call to see if they have this new color and put some gas in the car. Can’t thank you enough John for all of your videos. You have actually turned me into someone that catches more fish out of Huntington. Not on your level but with your help, we’ll see..... excited.
John, I've seen that you''re a very "i want everyone to have a good time fishing" kind of person (at least that i see from the vids). i dislike when people make a potentially relaxing/past time into such a competition. love how you share the wealth and try to help people without being too brash. i think your constant net conflict between you guys is quite comical and my only selfish wish is that you produced more videos but i understand the work involved! learning a bunch .. keep that content coming!!
I don't understand the three dislikes on this video other than the fact that there will always be haters John. Keep the vids coming! Love watching your stuff. You are an amazing fisherman.
Hey John, big fluke/flounder fisherman from OBX NC. Really appreciate your videos and I hope u keep it up. Been watching your videos for a year and just placed a big order for j+h bucktails. Big inspiration for the everyday Joe fishermen like me. Thanks again!!!
Just got back from fluke fishing with my brother about 45 min ago and I was killing them off pieces of ham out of my sandwich, 4 fish in row on ham. No sandwiches were harmed in the catching of those fluke.
U definitely know your fluke. TEXAS FLOUNDER .YOU CHANGED ME HERE IN TEXAS ABOUT THE WAY LIVE AND FEED AND MOVE .THERE IS SAMRALTY. .THANK JOHN SKINNER
I used to like the solid white or chartreuse colors for fluke. They used to make a chartreuse one that was translucent that worked incredibly. I haven't seen it in decades. Luckily I stocked up. It was the 3" size. I would have liked it if they were a little longer but not thicker
Proof of a great fishing video.....an uncontrollable urge to go fishing. I still use live bait but I never go without a variety of gulp plastics with me. Your logo should be "gulp it works" Gotta go I'm sure some flounder are calling to me out of Copano Bay.
Well done, John. Lure colour choice is always an interesting topic. I've got some 5" Jerk Shad but not had the chance to use them on bucktails yet. Just looking to see if I can get some of those salmo grubs this side of the pond. I haven't seen anyone over here using Gulp added to lures and I'm just waiting on some decent weather and a recuperating charter skipper to try some.
Wish Gulp would do bulk sales of grubs. I use them a lot. Dicks seems to have best deals when they offer discounts. Walmart is cheapest but very limited colors. They always got white though
Hi john, in the past you put some emphasis on hook eye placement of spro and S&S minnow bucktails for rapid vertical jigging, the new s&s John skinner fluke bucktails don’t look like they hang level, is this because they are swing hook bucktails or is this done to help deal with scoping out during a less than perfect drift?
Funny that you consider Sea Bass bycatch despite being excellent table fare on par with Summer Flounder if not better. In Hawaii 200 lb Yellowfin Tuna are a nuisance when you're trolling for big Blue Marlin.
John, you know you are what you eat and you have been eating flounder so long they come to you!!!! Well done! Where can I get that color? It's not on Amazon.
Went to j and h today, was out of salmon red gulp. Will be getting in 250 packs tomorrow but 150 are already sold.... make that 152 are already sold, lol. Hope that helps everyone out.
john,,,a friend of mine makes his own plastics and there pretty good IMO..not very durable but anyhow i kept telling him a solid hot fire orange i always wanted..3 years ago he got the color rite and since then it is absolutely our go to color..oddly enough many many times had the same thing happening with them swallowing the rig..a real problem being we catch so many shorts but hot orange usually always produces..
Didnt have much luck with these. Simply because they were too large, long... I kept getting the tails bit off. I had to use a straight hook and stinger to land them.
Red is the first color that goes in water. After 3 feet red looks black, this is because of light absorbtion by the water. So my question would be how well does a black gulp work? I would think that it would resemble an eel.
I'm sure you know this . My Brother would do something similar before the rise of Gulp. He would attach a red ribbon to a fluke sandwich and get some great fish with this.
Great videos as always. Thanks John, on the teaser that you tried the salmon gulp was there a silicone skirt on there.,couldn’t tell from the video. Thanks again
Hi John, before you set the hook, sometimes you pause jigging (but you know you are going to set because you bring your left hand to the rod), like you do at 11:40 in this video. Why do you do that? I thought you advocated setting the hook immediately once you feel weight on the line. Thanks!
John, just curious about the bucktail. I've started to try your techniques and I'm wondering if the bucktails you use have any sort of keeper on them to help hold the soft plastics like a normal jighead would? I seem to lose a lot of my soft plastics from the bucktails because they don't seem to be made with the additional soft plastic tip in mind.
The 6-inch Gulp grubs that we use do not come off these hooks. There was no need for a keeper. I've tried other Grubs (ZMan, PlugBait) and there's no issue with them sliding down.
Your are the man. Makes me kinda sick, down in Cape May, NJ the fluke fishing has been absolutely terrible in the ocean. Started nice in the back bays but was a horrible season out front.
@Fissues Dan - If you have an opportunity, you should try fishing out on the ocean side from Belmar or Sandy Hook. Action has been much better from there the past few weeks
Pick a day where you can get out on a reef or wreck in late july to August. After some solid warm stable weather with no storms. You should be able to catch.
Does this color work as good in the bays? The two videos you show with Gulp Salmon are in the ocean. Would you use this color on a jig with a new penny color shrimp in the back bays?
john, question on your rods/tackle: How are you connecting your braid to your lures. I use braid to a flor/ leader ...I have been watching your shows and I really like your rig set/up...# foot leader with dropper and loop to jig.
It did work very well for us today on nice fish. That said, I ended up catching a 12-pounder on pink shine after we ran out of the salmon gulp. I would definitely buy more salmon gulp if I could, but I'm not going to be annoyed about not having it.
John, I see you use a lot of white with green, green with yellow and pink with white. Is there any color combination that you would not use? Or that do not go together? I was surprised when you said you used all white and did very well. How do you know what colors to use....water temp?.....depth?.....water clarity?
There's no proven formula I'm aware of to know what the best color is under given circumstances. White is never a bad choice. Pink seems to work best in the presence of squid. I like New Penny when the fish are on crabs and shrimp.
I have always stuck to something familiar back when I was using bait..... squid and spearing. For these high-low rigs that you have helped transition me into, I have found the Gulp Sand Eels to be killer on a teaser with a white Tsunami glass minnow skirt (Or some other white teaser), and either a white or nuclear chicken grub on the bottom. Last trip I was on this setup was magic I enjoyed the breakdown here. I think red colored bait in general is a killer for anything really. Would be interested to see whether you could replace the pork rind bait with this for striped bass, and have either the same, or better results
I saw the Gulp sand eels work well on a trip or two, but they seemed to catch too many small sea bass where we fish. Maybe those fish are just easier to hook on the smaller profile sand eel.
It's hard to say..... I clearly don't get out as much as I would like, but every time I have fished with the sand eel gulp it has produced keeper fluke. Hard to shift away from something that works, as you mentioned :-)
Hey John, how do you determine the weight of your leader? Heavier leader for the the 3+ oz bucktails? And I just ordered the new color to try in Virginia in 2 weeks. Thanks for the video!!!
Great work. Question. I noticed in a number of videos you guys net the fish different at times. Technically the rim should be bent up but I noticed a few times it was the opposite way. Maybe a talking point, IDK. I am not trying to bash you in any way, just was wondering if you noticed this or if there was a method to why. Keep up the good work. I have learned a lot from you guys
You will notice I always have the rim bent up, unless the fish was already near the surface and I didn't have time to flip it. I think this video shows me making a point to flip it that way and straighten the net before netting. I agree with you that the rim should be up.
Another great video! U make me wanna fish more then I do, I just wish I could do what u do. Are u fishing a reef/structure or sonething more natural like holes/shoals
Oh man! Awesome video. The only thing I didn't like about it is that I'm not fishing with you. Otherwise you did an amazing job. I love fishing, but to be honest I haven't fish in a boat. When I fish for California halibut I do it on the getty or from the surf. I like your technique. Thank you so much for sharing it.
John Skinner Fishing they siwash hooks crimped onto the eyelet or they molded right on ? What size hooks do you use on the 3oz ? Thank you sir. Are you doing Fishing show in providence this year ?
They are open-eye hooks that go on the eyelet. I can suggest a really awesome, yet somewhat expensive hook. An Owner Stinger 5/0 on all of those swing hook bucktails. Model 5171-151.

I'm happy to hear you're catching there. I heard it was better there than to the east this season.
Love the enthusiasm on the intro to the new color you truly are a legend!!!!!!

I'm glad you appreciate the tone of the net trashing among us. Not everyone gets it. We have a lot of fun out there!
Just picked up a new rod and reel with that gulp, can’t wait to to try it out!
I laugh every time John says his fish is smaller than it is(which is everytime). John catches a 22" and acts like its 16" lmao
I have a hard time staying calibrated.
I don't understand the three dislikes on this video other than the fact that there will always be haters John. Keep the vids coming! Love watching your stuff. You are an amazing fisherman.
I think its the white, chartrueese and pink grubs that disliked this video
For some reason oranges and bright fluorescent red/orange always intrigue me for fishing. Even freshwater fish attack them like crazy!
Stop complaining. Aren’t you glad that John shares any new info that he gets? I’m grateful. Not his fault that suppliers don’t keep up.
Hey John, big fluke/flounder fisherman from OBX NC. Really appreciate your videos and I hope u keep it up. Been watching your videos for a year and just placed a big order for j+h bucktails. Big inspiration for the everyday Joe fishermen like me. Thanks again!!!
Good luck with the new gear. I've had a lot of positive feedback from NC.
Just got back from fluke fishing with my brother about 45 min ago and I was killing them off pieces of ham out of my sandwich, 4 fish in row on ham. No sandwiches were harmed in the catching of those fluke.
Lol
I’ve seen guys catch on strips of bacon too
U definitely know your fluke. TEXAS FLOUNDER .YOU CHANGED ME HERE IN TEXAS ABOUT THE WAY LIVE AND FEED AND MOVE .THERE IS SAMRALTY. .THANK JOHN SKINNER
I've caught numerous fluke using white belly steips from sand shark! They are good for something! And one strip will last a looooooong time!
I used to like the solid white or chartreuse colors for fluke. They used to make a chartreuse one that was translucent that worked incredibly. I haven't seen it in decades. Luckily I stocked up. It was the 3" size. I would have liked it if they were a little longer but not thicker
I've noticed red colored lures in general are just 🔥🔥🔥. Can't wait to diamond jig cod and sea bass with them this fall/winter!!
Awesome video! It's always fun going after them fluke!
That'll be my next purchase! Nice work John. Hi, Halk...nice fish too...
Proof that it's not how lures look to us but how they look to the fish.
One heck of a trip! You were reeling them as fast as you got the line back out.
Good to know on the colors. Thanks!
As always great video man! Your narrative skills are flawless!
Hi John, great info on the new color. Thanks, Mickey
Thanks for the tip on the new Gulp color.
Rick Bartley don't forget to get jiggy with it!
Thank you for another awesome video John!
What a gorgeous boat
Wish Gulp would do bulk sales of grubs. I use them a lot. Dicks seems to have best deals when they offer discounts. Walmart is cheapest but very limited colors. They always got white though
madmedic366 a cpl months ago they had a $5 rebate, I was told they do it every spring but this was the 1st i heard of it
I kept putting off doing the rebate, expired now, lol
ok
I've seen and have caught some nice bass on Merthiolate colored worms.
The narrator's inflection sounds a little like Alan Alda. I love it. Funny and comforting.
He lives about 15 miles from me.
@@JohnSkinnerFishing Say hello to Hotlips Houlihan.
The capt of the boat drives me crazy when he reels in his fish he almost feels it in all the way up to the eye of the fishing pole wtf
The red gulp is DEFINATELY worth using........ I caught my limit in Sea Bass yesterday!!!!! The bluefish like it as well unfortunately.
In my experience yes. The eye is more toward the front with a big eye to help reduce action when scoping out.
As the season progresses crabs get oranger in coolee. Maybe that's what they're zoning in on?
Funny that you consider Sea Bass bycatch despite being excellent table fare on par with Summer Flounder if not better. In Hawaii 200 lb Yellowfin Tuna are a nuisance when you're trolling for big Blue Marlin.

Nice fish
Didnt have much luck with these. Simply because they were too large, long... I kept getting the tails bit off. I had to use a straight hook and stinger to land them.
On your older underwater video's it shows the bucktail changing color as its deeper in depth I wonder what this new gulp looks like in deep water
ua-cam.com/video/QK0tfBwk_bo/v-deo.html
Hello John can you show how and where to cut and bleed the fish ... one day thanks
Red is the first color that goes in water. After 3 feet red looks black, this is because of light absorbtion by the water. So my question would be how well does a black gulp work? I would think that it would resemble an eel.
Thats crazy... sea money has episode party boat fishin where a sea bass caughes up a gulp. Are gulp minnows breeding in the atlantic. Lol
I'll try those colors over here in the panhandle of florida.
Hey John what rod and reel combo would you use on a boat where you needed to use 6,8,10 oz jigs
Just ordered some from J and H along with some of your new blackfish hugs and a curado dc
I'm sure you know this . My Brother would do something similar before the rise of Gulp. He would attach a red ribbon to a fluke sandwich and get some great fish with this.
Go in thru the gills to get those deep set hooks. Very easy to do!
martin m
Agreed...hold the fish white side up in your left hand. Get the rig with your right hand through the gills
Your description reads hot red but you kept saying orange on the video? Thanks for advice I’m going to get me a pack this weekend! 👍🏻
It's called "salmon red".
@@JohnSkinnerFishing I bought a pack! Enjoyed watching you catch those slabs. 👍🏻

John, on the teaser that you tried the salmon gulp was there a silicone skirt on there.,couldn’t tell from the video. Thanks again
Yes. There's a link to it in the video description.
How late in the season will you continue to target fluke?
Is it ideal too slow drag the buck tail tipped wit gulp grub off the shallow end of jetties.or this kind of lure is better for jigging
I would like to know where you are fishing? Structure or just open water?
I’ve had success strictly with blue fuze, it’s like fluke crack... I had to get it on eBay though.
Hi John, before you set the hook, sometimes you pause jigging (but you know you are going to set because you bring your left hand to the rod), like you do at 11:40 in this video. Why do you do that? I thought you advocated setting the hook immediately once you feel weight on the line. Thanks!
The hand goes over if I think I feel something. Many times it's a false alarm. The hits often feel subtle, especially at that depth.
I watched it. I think I was getting tapped and making sure the fish had it before I set. I don't set on taps. I set on weight.
Makes sense, thanks!
John, just curious about the bucktail. I've started to try your techniques and I'm wondering if the bucktails you use have any sort of keeper on them to help hold the soft plastics like a normal jighead would? A lot of places have under-performed the last two seasons.

I have not found this color to be as good in the bays. I like white glow and pink shine there.
Amazing video John!
What depth are you fishing?
fluke are currently up shallow in the back bay and move into the depths of 80-90+ in the summer as the season progersses
john, question on your rods/tackle: How are you connecting your braid to your lures. I use braid to a flor/ leader ...I have been watching your shows and I really like your rig set/up...# foot leader with dropper and loop to jig.
I connect the braid to the leader through a barrel swivel. Palomar knot on the braid, clinch on the leader.
thanks Johnny !!!!
just used this color today for fluke! The skates love it, the fluke, not so much!
It did work very well for us today on nice fish. That said, I ended up catching a 12-pounder on pink shine after we ran out of the salmon gulp. I would definitely buy more salmon gulp if I could, but I'm not going to be annoyed about not having it.

I'll be working on it today.
Hello!! Is the sent of these Mystical Red / Orange gulps the same as the other gulps? OR Is there also a new Fantastic sent to go along with it?
I'm pretty sure only the color is different.
Hey John, you should have mentioned that the salmon red gulp was a limited run from Berkley! Even J&H Tackle dosen't have it!
No one told me.
Yea that sucks they stopped making it u can find some here n there but mainly in the grub style
I must know- in all your pictures it shows the bottom side of the flounder- why?

I was surprised when you said you used all white and did very well. How do you know what colors to use....water temp?.....depth?.....water clarity?
There's no proven formula I'm aware of to know what the best color is under given circumstances. White is never a bad choice. Pink seems to work best in the presence of squid. I like New Penny when the fish are on crabs and shrimp.
What color buck tail would you recommend using with the nuclear chicken and the salmon gulp?
I have always stuck to something familiar back when I was using bait..... squid and spearing. For these high-low rigs that you have helped transition me into, I have found the Gulp Sand Eels to be killer on a teaser with a white Tsunami glass minnow skirt (Or some other white teaser), and either a white or nuclear chicken grub on the bottom. I enjoyed the breakdown here. I think red colored bait in general is a killer for anything really. Would be interested to see whether you could replace the pork rind bait with this for striped bass, and have either the same, or better results

thanks for the video. do you reuse gulp lures? how do get them off the hook? do they get bit off by fish?
I keep reusing until they get torn apart.
Hey John, how do you determine the weight of your leader? Heavier leader for the the 3+ oz bucktails? And I just ordered the new color to try in Virginia in 2 weeks. Thanks for the video!!!
25# is fine. I'm using 30# here because the bottom is so rough and the leader gets a lot of abrasion.
how does one add the tail to the gulp ...sorry im new to all this
Cant seem to find this color anywhere (salmon red) , its eathier sold out or on back order. Does anyone know where they are available ?
Hey John is the mattituck inlet good for fluke
It's good in the Sound there May and June.
Whats the best gulp color for fluke ?
If I could only have one, I'd choose Glow White. After that I want Blue Fuze and Salmon. Those are my favorites. Not necessarily the best everywhere.
