It was framed! I haven't read all 5 of those, but I have 11/22/63 in the house, I'll get to it eventually! I'd maybe have added '87's Misery, as it has zero supernatural element in it. There's nothing spooky, or mysterious - it's a "straightforward" suspense thriller, and it's incredibly cleverly done, coming in around 370pgs. The 1990 movie is a rare GOOD adaptation of King's work, and Kathy Bates deserved the best actress Oscar for that year.
Yes you got it, Derri! Misery is fantastic, and there’s a lot that I could’ve added to this but these 5 are just the ones early on that really got me hooked on King. And Bates absolutely should’ve won, she was amazing! I can’t wait to hear what your thoughts are on 11/22/63. I love that book so much!
I was one of those who never gave King a chance. This was a HUGE mistake. I just finished The Drawing of the Three and it was an absolute banger of book with excellent writing, characters and story lines. I loved it!! Can't wait to jump into more of King's works. Salem's Lot and IT is slotted for Oct. Great video Collin.
Yeah man!!! I’m so happy you enjoyed the first 2 DT books. I thought that series was just such a blast. Those are fricken great October books and I’m jealous you’ll be getting to read them for the first time. Thanks for watching my man!
Well if that’s what you’ve got lined up I don’t think you can go wrong! I hope you enjoy the DT. Such a unique experience. Enjoy your journey man! I’m excited for you!
My first Stephen King was this year. Different Seasons… and it was so awesome. Almost finished with Salems lot and I can’t believe I have put it off for this long.
Different Seasons is one that I plan on reading really soon. I absolutely loved Salem’s Lot. I’m assuming you’ve enjoyed it so far? Thanks for checking out this video and stopping by the channel, Jeremy! Happy reading!
BECAUSE HE WAS FRAMED!! That one came to me immediately...hopefully it's correct. Great vid, Colin! Here's a few of mine that got me into King: 1- Cujo 2- Needful Things 3- Pet Semetary 4- IT These are titles that I read before I even got into high school, and probably instilled my love for reading thereafter.
Ahhh man I really need to get to Cujo and Needful Things those are 2 I haven’t read yet. I think I’ll love NF it sounds like a premise I could really get behind. And YES you nailed it! Way to go! Thanks for watching Anthony!
@@ColinsCornerYT NF is one of those character-focused books we all love. Some of them are weird and disturbed in their own fascinating way that's addicting to read. I got a sense that you'd really enjoy it.
If I would finish The Stand I’m sure it would be at the top. I had started to experience a bit of a slump and moved onto something else and just haven’t picked it back up. The Character work in It is unmatched by anything else I’ve read. In spite of some cringe scenes it’s probably my favorite.
I think having Carrie his first published novel was a bold move. Considering Carrie is a teenage girl, and King an adult man, there are certain scenes that really speak to how well King could write even that early in his career. It is definitely my favorite stand-alone of King’s. It’s hard to write a 1000+ page page-turner, but I didn’t want to put it down. Except for that one scene in part 1 that felt…strange. 11/22/63 was great. However, by page 200 I absolutely hated the word “obdurate.” He uses that word probably over 100 times in that book. Otherwise, I love the Yellow Card Man, and his mysterious tie ins to other works of his. Haven’t read Salems Lot or the Institute, but I definitely want to read both. Personally, I think Duma Key is one of King’s best non-horror works, and it gets slept on heavy. I want to say my top 5, in no order, are: It, Duma Key, The Green Mile, The Dead Zone, and Bag of Bones. That’s excluding the Dark Tower which I rank separately from the rest of his work. Great video dude, can’t wait for the next one!
I agree and King has given his wife Tabitha her flowers regarding Carrie. She helped him a lot he’s been quoted as saying. And he does absolutely love the word “obdurate” in 11/22/63😂. I remember thinking “what’s his deal with this word!?” Duma Key was fantastic and I wish it were more well known. Maybe because there’s no adaptation for it? Not sure but I agree with you it does not get enough love. Thanks for watching brother!
I've read and enjoyed all of these books. I might have chosen a different 5 books to give examples of King's various styles besides horror, but these are all good books. He writes some of the best characters of any author out there. I like to recommend Billy Summers as an unexpected King novel. No horror at all but great characters. I was going to say the picture went to jail because he was due to be hanged, but I bet alynam82 got it right. Very thoughtful post, Colin.
Oh there are certainly many other King books out there, many of which I haven’t read yet! These are just the 5 the got me personally into him. I agree with you, his characterization is fantastic! That isn’t a bad guess on the joke, but Anthony did get it this time! Thanks for watching!
I started reading king's books back in 2013 the first was full dark no stars and then under the dome since then I have enjoyed some of his work like the dark tower series Dolores Claiborne insomnia
I have yet to read either Dolores Claiborne or Full Dark No Stars, but I do own them both so they will be coming down the pipe hopefully sometime soon. I still have so many more King books to read, and this man just keeps on writing! It's amazing. Thanks for watching, Angela and happy reading!
Super great video! I have only read Pet Sematary, Fairy Tale and the first 3 books in the Dark Tower, so this is super helpful to decide where to go next. When I first read one of his books I was actually pleasantly surprised by how compelling they are, for some reason I was just expecting something very different and I couldn't tell you why. Thanks for sharing!
Well I’d say you’re off to a good start with those 5 books! I feel like a lot of people (myself included originally) feel similarly and that’s why I felt like making this video! I’m glad it was helpful, and thank you for watching!
Good video. I'm a constant reader, definite King fan, and couldn't agree more about his talent and diverse genre styles. Dude could write the phone book, and it would come off with a Maine islander accent, have a supernatural twist, and be totally more interesting. I had to skip your details on The Institute and 11/22/63 as I haven't gotten to those yet. I'm slowly working my way through the latter part of his catalog - I've read all the older stuff - and I'm doing content on the books as I go, but I've got a long way to go still. But Carrie and It are fantastic, I agree, and 'Salem's Lot is actually one of my favorites!
I agree! And sorry if that stuff was a little too spoilery, it’s always tough I try not to include anything that isn’t on the back cover but some people don’t even want to know that so I get it! 11/22/63 is the closest thing to a masterpiece that King has written of what I’ve read so far, in my opinion obviously. It is just so good. I really hope you enjoy it when you get to it! Thanks for watching guys!
@@ColinsCornerYT - No worries on the spoilers. I think you did just fine. I'm just definitely one of those where I barely want to know ANYTHING about a book I'm already committed to reading. Want to discover on my own. But I know that about myself, and easily avoid such things. You video is just fine. 😊
