Great tut. A few notes: a compressor increases soft as well as reducing loud (avg level). gain should be below noise filters and above compress. noise gate should be (subjective) at the top to reduce (cpu) work on noise filter if using it, because it can cause encoder lag with slower systems. The filters are processed top down. I prefer to use noise gate only to avoid voice distortion since the background noise is pretty much drowned out by my voice anyway; and if it isn't, the environment is too loud. Of course I use a dynamic mic instead of condenser to cut down on outside noise, so keep that in mind too.
Hey Pete! Thanks for the great the video. I just want to add that in case distortion, at high audio levels happens for any of you guys - try moving the "compressor" filter to the top, so it takes priority first. To do this, right-click the cog icon, go into filters, then select the compressor filter and press the "^" (up arrow). This solved my issues with my sound getting distorted when "yelling" into the microphone. My setup looks like this: - Compressor - Noise suppression - Noise Gate - Gain Best Lifting

thank you so much for posting this, a veteran streamer here and I just been in the office for so long that i completely forgot ALL of these settings and this was a great refresher to get me back in the game!
So I have streamed, mostly as a hobby, for roughly 6 - 7 years. In all of that time I've struggled with audio and it's always been a pretty huge issue. I've tried looking things up and most of the time if not all the time, it was confusing and got me nowhere. Your video was an extreme help, it actually got me to a point to where I actually think it sounds good. So I wanted to say thanks and say it was extremely helpful!
hi! can you please tell me your settings for your noise gate? everywhere online only has male voice settings and my words keep getting cut off when i speak Dx
@@vikkyts try increasing both hold and release times. my words got cut out horribly with my new mic setup (tinkering with everything today) and i noticed a big improvement removing noise suppression, setting the levels for the noise gate, increasing the hold and release times (mostly the release time so it fades out smoother instead of being an abrupt cutoff from all sound)
I spent three days trying to fix my audio in OBS. Your video was the only one that explained the meaning of each setting and what they do in a very didactical way without rushing it for beginners. I finally got to fix my audio. Thanks, man.
Exactly what I was looking for, I've just started using OBS and when I found and opened the Compressor I had no idea what the settings really meant. Thanks!
I didn't know what was wrong with my mic cuz it gave a standard noise, even when it was muted. My friends thought it was cuz of the mic, but I refused to believe that because everyone else with this mic had no problem. This video made my audio 10x better
Am I the only one who thinks the audio quality is massively degraded once enabling noise suppression? It almost sounds like you're talking in a Pringle can or a fishbowl. Yes it cuts out fan noise and other close sounds but I sound completely different when I enable it.
Yes, I'm thinking the same way. Also when I tried it myself it seems like it also take away parts of my voice. On the other hand the breathing sounds is really annoyng especially nose breath out sound... So I'm trying to find a way to get rid of this without having robo voice, gaps etc.
I agree. I had to remove my suppressor because it completely defeats the purpose of having a nice microphone. And it sucks because when my gate does kick in, my voice sounds clear but you can hear my fan in the background.
The reason is because it’s taking away frequency’s that are causing the noise you want taking out. Thus making the rest of the audio rubbish. I just recommend the gate, and finding a quite area to stream. Also if you don’t want a fan to be heard in your videos, just turn the fan off.
Tip for everyone: Make sure you test your sound/Mic settings when your computer is at 100% or volume. made the mistake and was super loud on my last stream
Beckiie Estrada which broadcasting software are you using? You could potentially add a filter onto your mic setting to increase the “gain” which in terms makes the mic volume louder.
I was searching for something that could remove that annoying microphone noise and came across this, not only it remove that annoying noise but also improved my microphone quality, thanks a bunch for explaining how those filters works!

Happens with noise suppression all over the board regardless of mic (as far as I know with the mics I’ve used for recording). All about striking a balance between noise reduction and “robot sound”. I’ve found that less is more with this tool - try removing as many noise sources as possible to get as clean audio as possible IN; the better your IN quality, the easier to make the OUT sound amazing 👍🏻👍🏻 hope that was helpful even though it’s 2 months too late 😂
That's the nature of noise suppression. It's doing what it's supposed to do. By using this filter it will reduce the audio quality slightly, depending on how much noise suppression you use.

Wow, I should have been using all of these. For the longest time I was only using noise gate, eq, and limiter. The noise suppression helped even more with the fan noise of my PC. But even though I thought I built a quiet PC, next one is going to have to be even quieter. Or I find some long cables to move the PC away from the Mic.
Thank you so much! You clarified this question for me. I struggled so much trying to learn what to do with my microphone noise. I installed tons of programs like Voicemeeters, Canabile, vst filters but it didn’t helped me much. You gave me a great idea of what I really should try.

Thank you belive this was very helpful i was sitng for hours trying to figer out why i was so low volume compared to the game and your video helped me a lot!
Small tip I'm surprised was overlooked. You can enable audio monitoring to hear your voice in real time rather than having record and playback. Though I don't recommend using this method through the whole process since what you hear will be a mix of what OBS is outputting and your inner voice. I wold say use it alongside looking at the visual representation for broad adjustments where you can tell if the audio is extremely off, then move to the record and playback technique for fine tuning.
Fine thank you. But I haven't known OBS to have filters. I was searching the net for best noise filters while it was under my nose all these days. My other comment is, your intro and "outro" videos are a bit noisy and the blue snowball mic sounds so clear even without the filters. Two thumbs up!!
Just a small thing, ratio isnt amount, its basically how open or closed the top of the comressor is, how harshly it cuts off the top end. a Compressor with a ratio all the way closed is actually a limiter.
Hey guys! I just released an updated tutorial on this topic which is much more up-to-date: ua-cam.com/video/-SLk_ScNAps/v-deo.html

Awesome video! It wouldve been nice if you were to show the gain first and then afterwards the other ones. Because ones i setup the other three and started on the noise gain I had to redo the other ones.
Thanks for the help!
Thanks for the video mate, had my set up going pretty good though thanks to a update i lost all my settings when i had to roll back, so you just made my life so much quicker tonight.
Anytime I upgrade my setup I rewatch this video , you are amazing, Im a big fan!
Great video! OBS was bugging the hell out of me with my mic picking up the fans from my PC. I'm gonna do this tonight! Awesome.
The first section of your video helped me. Thanks for uploading. Blessings
Fine thank you. But I haven't known OBS to have filters. I was searching the net for best noise filters while it was under my nose all these days. My other comment is, your intro and "outro" videos are a bit noisy and the blue snowball mic sounds so clear even without the filters. Two thumbs up!!
The way you explain things give anyone hope....
You're the man, Pete! You have fantastic content and I really appreciate your detailed explanations of each setting.
I love this guy. His green screen video and this is so informative. Appreciate you
Just a small thing, ratio isnt amount, its basically how open or closed the top of the comressor is, how harshly it cuts off the top end. a Compressor with a ratio all the way closed is actually a limiter.
Gotta admit that intro convinced me, subbed
