It may, (but not 100% sure) Be me that you were talking about difficulty using re: cover.
I'm talking about using this on more irregular large cover, be it a large flat rock, long cover like hood, braced off a tree branch, etc.
Where the handguard bottom is inaccessible, and typical manipulation would end up occluding the your optic, or physical block the normal use of a support hand.
This type of cover, for me. Is far more prevalent in urban and rural environments that I used this in. It's not really a downside as you can still easily bypass the scope switch when needed, and more of a comment about how I ended up just not using the SS in specific covered based scenarios.
Around narrow cover like window sills, vtac barricades etc. manipulation isn't impeded like you mentioned.

I could see this being useful when shooting long range. In the desert shooting at 4-700 yards I found myself often going from 15x down to 8x to transition between targets before zooming back in. If I lost my eye box it was a bitch to reidentify the target. On the other hand at these ranges I'm mostly shooting prone so I wonder how well the switch would work when the rifle is close to the ground or rested on a backpack.

    • @BrassFacts

@@Mykaelous I find that when shooting long range, my support hand is back by the stock supporting a bag typically. So the normal way is more natural, and does as you state.

Think you using it wrongly because having max zoom and red dot side mounted can achieve what your doing with them. - Now think your an Operator in a some dodgy area with a elevated position you have the Max range of rifle Enemy and everything in between - Now this is where it shines because say you have a scope thats Long Range mile out kind of power your Ar has long barrel can push out quite far this is where you would want it set up So when you Push Out To Zoom so you max control of Rifle for Max range and then pull back for targets Closer and then next target far out again but you eyes in scope and zooming it to what you need for each target then if they are really close then twist to side mounted red dot - Amazing bit of kit and Great review like to see you run it differently to test

Those videos have resulted in many thousands of people with VAST misunderstandings of what happened, and I do not have time to fully explain the details of each part of the situation every time.
I started the install on your ScopeSwitch, and the collar is the last part, and I was and am incredibly busy, so I had Kara, a brand new employee finish it up. It was her first or second time ever doing so, as we were training her up. Massive mistake.
I wish pretty desperately that I had personally installed the problematic part, as we had never had a breakage or issue before, and we tortured the shit out of them. Had I installed the collar and not gone back to work, this particular conversation wouldn't be happening. Also if I had given you a torque spec, or had spent more time to help you fix it, then things might be different. I take responsibility for this occurrence on many levels, including the design.

I don’t see this having a place in real world combat. You’ll basically never have to change magnifications that quick, it’s extremely weighty, takes up space, and adds complexity that can/will fail. It bums me that Bill Rapier was a proponent of this, because I distinctly remember hearing him complain about gimmicks a few years ago. And that’s what this is. A gimmick.

    • @armorers_wrench
      @armorers_wrench 7 місяців тому +4

That's just your opinion. Just so we have a point of reference, have you ever actually been in real world combat? It's important to this topic because you are making a claim specifically about combat and you're referencing someone who has certainly been in combat who says he likes it.
I don't really see how this is a gimmick. It does what it is advertised to do and appears to be durable. The complexity/potential failure aspect literally doesn't even matter because even if it does fail, which it didn't in this video, the scope still works and can still be adjusted the old fashioned way. The entire system weighs 10.5 oz and 6.3oz of that is an extremely high quality and robust 7075 T6 scope mount with 4140 steel lugs. For reference a Geissele super precision 1.93 scope mount made out of 7075 t6 aluminum weighs 7.2oz. So, you're basically getting a high quality 1.93 scope mount that weighs 6.2oz and for the material type that is pretty standard(it's actually on the lighter side of things as far as 7075 t6 scope mounts go), in addition to that the cables and switch weigh 4.3oz. So, it isn't extremely weighty like you claim. It does add a little weight, but if you can't handle 4oz I dunno but that sounds like a personal problem.
The only valid criticism that you leveled is that it does take up space. But everything is a tradeoff, isn't it? You cannot add any functionality to a rifle without adding weight and taking up railestate. You could say that about anything. Why have a light? It takes up a ton of space, has a bunch of cables, is heavy, needs batteries, etc. Plus, that light adds complexity and could fail! SO why have it??? Besides, you'll probably never use it anyway so just don't even bother.
That's pretty much what you sound like. This isn't necessarily a product for every rifle but it clearly is useful and serves a specific purpose. It isn't a gimmick imo.

@@armorers_wrench I have been in combat, yes. Bill has obviously seen combat as well. But I don’t know his opinion on this product in regards to whether or not he thinks it would do well in combat. As I mentioned, I remember being at AmTac and hearing him talk about his dislike for gimmicks like this. Which is why I’m surprised he got on board with this.
The weight is an issue. My rifle overseas weighed around 15lbs. And that’s with me trying to be thoughtful about weight. My colleagues had rifles that were even heavier. Weight isn’t an issue if you gain something from it. A light will grant you the ability to fight in low light environments. LAM/IR opens up the night for you. But what does this product give you?
It’s at best a “quality of life” product. Like a BAD lever. You don’t need it. But at least the BAD lever is small, and doesn’t hinder anything. I have never been in any combat situation where this product would have helped or made a difference. I have asked others, and they share said opinion. You are taking up space, adding weight, screwing with one of the most important pieces of your weapon system, and for what? To be able to zoom in and out slightly faster?
The only place I can see this being used is in 3 gun comps. And even then, I’m not sure how useful this will be. But as far as combat goes, this is an absolute no go.
