    Most home invasions happen during the day. Best to have options for day, night, home or not home. Most likely it's someone who is familiar with your schedule and what you have. Keep your mouth shut about your personal security.

    People often forget how useful dogs are in home defense situations. They hear and react to everything. Dogs are my first option for defense. My .357/.38 lever action rifle is my "just in case" option (I've always loved levers for defensive purposes).
    But home invasions only last a few seconds when guns are involved. They're even shorter when decent sized dogs catch intruders by surprise. Dogs give you enough time to get your guns if needed.

      In regards to dogs you need a dog that has the drive for defensive or apprehension. Food refusal is one of the first things taught. Also I high drive dog is more driven to bite vs treats. Biggest mistake is people thinking that a dog is naturally protective, they are natural at alerting you by barking which gives you time to get your gun.

    • @davidnuxoll5993

      I prefer my rifle in 5.56 or or CZ scorpion. Handgun is the most complex weapon system with only 2 points of contact vs a PCC or rifle which has 3 points of contact. Throw on a red dot for faster target acquisition.

  • @krissmall5984
    @krissmall5984 4 роки тому +186

    8 years of law enforcement / EMS has taught me that the weapon system is less important then the ammo and training. The most effective ammo that stops a target in the fewest rounds fired is the best option whatever platform your the most accurate with and comfort with and train the most with will always work the best. fight or flight kicking in without knowing how to manage it, no weapon system is effective. Pistols tend to need a much higher level of training and consist practice to be effective. Rifle platforms require more manipulation training and are longer and harder to maneuver. Shotguns require more training per ammo type. Everything is effective as long as you are effective with it. Train, train harder, train again until you fail to fail.

    • @Radb707
      @Radb707 3 роки тому +1

      Yeah because you're trained if you ever pull your weapon it's to kill. If you're a civilian, and maybe you're not used to these situations, you might pull your gun and start firing and asking questions later. That'll get you in jail if you killed them. Fear for you life isn't self defense to the law.

      I still believe in math. The higher the rounds in the magazine the more chances you have to shoot the target. You will never respond in an uncontrolled environment like you would in a controlled environment, even cops don't with all their training, we're human not John Wick. This is not a movie, it's real life. Let's not even start on if you have multiple attackers and they are armed as well. I live in California and the ten round limit for magazines is stupid for these reasons and more.

    I am a bow hunter for deer and my cousin got me started in the sport. He told me about "buck fever" and I had no idea what he was talking about till I experienced it. For those who are not hunters, buck fever is the adrenaline dump that gives you the shakes when you've been sitting in your stand all evening and suddenly realize there's a buck 15 yards away. I grew past this but when my Arlington Heights, IL condo was broken into, I got a triple dose of it. I was sleeping and awoke to someone trying to pry my bedroom door open - I had my Smith and Wesson 9MM handy but you cannot imagine the adrenaline dump. Bottom line, it pissed me off that someone broke into my condo, but I learned not to rely on a handgun. You want multiple points of contact to rein in the buck fever - go with the pistol caliber carbine with the brace - your life will be saved with it.

    .45 ACP, Speer Gold Dot 230 gr or.45 ACP Federal HST 230 gr (+P)
    They perform very well in internal, external, and terminal ballistics in the typical self defense situation.
    They’re already subsonic from the factory in any pistol barrel at full power making them ideal for effectiveness with a suppressor. I also disagree on being unsuppressed in home defense. The suppressor keeps me more confident, more situationally aware, and reduces my hearing damage. (With the loads above, zero damage so long as it’s not hours of shooting). I don’t need my neighbors calling law enforcement on my behalf. I need to be the one calling to report so that I can coordinate with dispatch, so as not to be shot by law enforcement accidentally in my own home.

    Not because of the shot spread so much. But because of the fact you don't have to worry as much about a stray round ending up in your neighbors house.

    My choices: 12 gauge pump shotgun, loaded with 00 buck, configured with 1. side saddle for extra rounds (that include #6 birdshot, maybe even slugs for options) 2. a flashlight of course (mounted so your hand on the forend can easily reach it) and 3. Fiber optic clip-on front sight substituting for the bead. The fiberoptic bead is nice & bright in the daytime, and extra bright at night with the flashlight on. Train with both eyes open. And for backup a beautiful stainless work or art 38 special / 357 magnum revolver. The 12 gauge is about the only weapon that can surely dissuade an aggressor with a single hit, and the pump-action is the most reliable way to load another round in the chamber. The backup revolver will definitely go bang with the pull of the trigger. And if on the rare chance it does not, then on the next pull. Keep it simple, train. I practice with cheap 38 special rounds, keep the revolver loaded with 38 +P - why not 357 mag? because my eardrums matter.

    The issue with shotguns and AR is shooting in enclosed spaces is noise. It’s so loud that your ears are ringing. Your hearing is vital at night to hear what is going on and if the bad guys have friends sneaking around. One round and you can’t hear. Wearing sound protection is also pointless because you can hear anything. If you have electronic hearing protection then think about your family. If their ears are ringing they can’t hear instructions when you tell them how to get out. Screaming it isn’t good since it tells the bad guys exactly where the vulnerable people will be. So pistol is the best option. I keep a G19 with a light in a safe bedside with an extra magazine of hollow points. In CA we are only allowed 10 rounds per magazine.

    I have seen many introduction level videos about choices for home defense weaponry. Over penetration is frequently mentioned as a safety warning to homeowners, which is a good point. But, I seemingly never hear about the most obvious hazard with high power calibers. I am talking about either blowback debris or ricochets. Just one shot at a wooden door could send razor sharp splinters flying back at the homeowner, which could sever an artery or even blind the shooter in one or both eyes. Also, high caliber rounds, like .223, can easily ricochet once or even many times off of hardwood doors, steel countertops and the like. Care has to be taken, otherwise you could wind up shooting yourself!

    Another reason not to use a suppressor for self-defense: depending on where you live, and what your self-defense scenario is, you might NOT get your firearm back from the police. And that would include any expensive optic, suppressor, etc., that might happen to be attached to it. That's why my own home-defense firearm is a used, police trade-in Mossberg 500. I bought it for $175. It has an 8 shot mag tube, and a heat shield. I added one of those picatinny rail "donuts" that clamps on the mag tube (under $10 on Amazon.) I threw a cheap Feyachi weapon light on there that I also bought on Amazon (under $50.) It throws 1200 lumens of light, and it has pretty good ratings. It came with a standard cap switch, a pressure switch with an extended wire, two rechargeable batteries, a picatinny mount, and a battery charger. I zip-tied the pressure switch pad to the heat shield, directly above the left side of the pump. Simple but effective. I can easily operate the on/off switch or temporary on switch with my left thumb. I also added a stock-mounted sleeve that holds an extra 5 rounds. I think it was $10. So for less than $250, I have an effective home defense weapon that I won't "miss" if I never get it back.

    We're in sync on shotguns, which is ironic because my first shotgun, purchased decades ago when the internet barely existed and I knew less than nothing about them, was the classic 12 ga. Browning A-5 (now an A-9). Having realized that at it's 50" length it was more of a hazard than a help for home defense, I upgraded to a bull-pup like the BP12, except I went with the Israeli designed CQB 12 ga. IWI Tavor TS12, which has a 15+1 capacity (for 2.75" shells, 12+1 for 3"). It also sports an Eotech 558, rechargeable light and laser. I use #1 buck for home defense, with one 5-shot tube occupied by 5 slug/00 buck combo shells. This makes an excellent home defense weapon as well. I believe the TS12 is a bit more expensive than the BP12, but if that's where your budget gets you, the BP12's a good choice. However, with triple the capacity and an extremely rugged military design that's truly been "battle tested" in true battle scenarios, the TS12 is possibly the best choice for a semi-auto 12 ga. out there.

    Again I don’t know if drums for AR’s have a different design but it’s typically a bad idea to store drum mags for extended periods of time with the springs cranked. We store them loaded but with the springs loosened, and crank them when needed.

  • @VTPSTTU
    @VTPSTTU 4 роки тому +5

    Thanks for the video! I think you raised some great points. I'd like to follow up with a few more thoughts.
    One of the first points I'd make is that new gun owners should check their area for places to practice and what the requirements are at those places. Even if they get great training, they will need to practice. Some ranges aren't going to allow AR-15 rifles or pistols or any other firearm that fires a caliber that is traditionally a rifle caliber. They might even have some restrictions against guns that "look scary" if the local government is unfriendly to firearms rights. The simple 9mm pistol that one can practice weekly because the range allows it is better than the AR-15 that one can only practice every few months when one can go to a range that allows using that firearm.
    Another issue one should consider is whether attackers might be in a mob or whether one is just dealing with more typical home invaders. While there's a good chance that a mob would disperse at the first round of anything that comes towards them, there's a great deal of stupidity in the world today. I'm more inclined to have something with more than fifteen rounds in the magazine now than I was a few months ago. That I might see a larger group of attackers has made a shotgun less of my "go to" home defense firearm.
    Another point to consider is that many invaders are working in groups or two or three these days. When intruders broke into my home in 2018, there were two of them. I think they both went into the enclosed front porch originally but then one broke into a back storage room. I've heard of others that hit both the front and back doors simultaneously from the beginning. This kind of attack would favor having more rounds but would also favor having a firearm nearby at all times. Those qualities are a bit contradictory. I keep a single-stack 9mm near me almost constantly now. I have six in the magazine and one in the chamber. The good thing is that traditional invaders are likely to retreat at the first shot. In my case, they retreated when I howled. That was good because my poor health means that I can't fight well, and I didn't have a gun near me at the time. Where they were, I was cut off from reaching a gun.
    In the old days, many people got their earliest training in revolvers. Even as police departments started to make the transition, most people who taught classes were people who had learned on revolvers, had carried revolvers for a long time, and who believed in teaching new shooters using revolvers. I'm no longer promoting the idea that everyone needs to start with a revolver. Because 9mm practice ammunition is much cheaper, I see a value in new shooters starting with a gun that uses less expensive practice ammunition. Many people teaching today are people who have much less of a history with revolvers, so their teaching from the beginning with a pistol makes sense. Their students will learn better if the instructor is teaching a firearm that he or she really knows well.
    On top of these factors, all of the scenarios that I mentioned are ones where a revolver will be at a disadvantage (except for being welcome at a range). I'd rather have the faster loading of a pistol when facing a group of attackers. I'd rather have the higher ammunition capacity if multiple attackers break into my home. On the other hand, a revolver is still a great choice. Seeing even traditional sights isn't that hard with a flashlight sitting anywhere behind the shooter and sending a little light forward. Many attackers will retreat at the first shot. The Glock people make a good argument that a Glock will still be shooting with nothing more than routine cleaning when almost any revolver will have gone to the gunsmith for timing work that will completely stop a revolver from shooting. On the other hand, no one tells revolver owners that they need to practice tap-rack type drills for when a revolver doesn't feed. For anyone who needs real advice on firearms for home defense, a revolver is still a worthwhile firearm to consider.
    I'm sorry this reply is so long. That's the danger of asking me what I think about a topic.

      If you go to a range that won't let you shoot an AR for any reason other than it's a pistol only range, then you should leave immediately & never go to that hell hole again.

    Man, video after video claiming to know what the best home defense weapon is, and every single one of them is absolutely wrong. The best home defense weapon is simple; its the one you know. Its the one you're comfortable with. Its the one you know how to load, unload, flip its safety without looking, you've cleaned, you've loaded, you've unloaded. .22 to 10mm, 12 gauge buck to .223. What these people say doesn't matter. What matters is what youre comfortable with, and what you feel you can be effective with. The end.

    Practice, practice and get to know the firearm of your choice as much as you can and then learn the layout of your home as much as possible since that is your main advantage over the intruder.
    In a small home or apartment, nothing comes close to the devastation of a shotgun with buckshot/bird bb's combo and a high lumen strobe flashlight.
    For the corners, just go with a 18.5" barrel and lowest LOP you can comfortably manage. I will agree that making the loudest possible racket to wake up the entire neighborhood is a good idea since that could work out to be a good deterrent too.

    The main reason shotguns have been recommended so much for home defense isn't so much their ergonomics but rather their devastation. You hit a target with a 12 G 00 you can rest pretty well assured that the threat is neutralized which is the whole point. Not always the case with other weapon types. There are alternatives however I replaced my 12 G with a Marlin 1894 in 44 because I feel the round is just as effective but with a little less recoil and the action is similar. That is just me though I don't blame folks for sticking with a shotgun. It will blow both of your eardrums out however if you shoot it inside.
