Horrible, absolutely horrible, glad too see you came out of this accident with such trauma. I would also point out for others with similar rifles, to use extra caution, with a threaded chamber lock, if you would experience in case of catastrophic failure, overpressure, the cap threads will shear off and come back to the shooter, obviously is not a good thing/design, now i would imagen every .50 caliber rifle would fail somehow with this kind of pressure, but a standard bolt action rifle would be somewhat safer, were the barrel most likely would rupture or blow and the bolt would stay in place and not come back as most heavy caliber bolt lugs can handle 100k psi without shearing the lugs. @@aregmartirosyan2076 Absolutely. I don’t remember the exact amount, but I seem to remember it’s significantly lower than that. Edit: For reference, I looked it up afterwards- it takes 15-16psi to fracture a skull, 23,000 psi to crush a small car. A skull would be dusted at 85,000.
I just found your channel through the Slowmo Guys and I heard you mention your gun exploding in another and went searching for this to see what happened. As a US Army veteran that worked in an Army hospital, all I can say, is God blessed you and I am glad to have found this channel. Much love and support!
I’ll tell you exactly what the issue was! A lot of old military rounds used Nitrocellulose powder in their ammunition and that stuff is basically a derivative of Nitroglycerin, the older it gets the more unstable it becomes!
Hi Sheldon, if I'm not mistaken most smokeless powders, including the modern ones are made of nitrocellulose. The so-called double base contain some amount of nitroglycerin as well. It turns out that the old powders were perhaps not so stabilized as the modern ones, so the older they get, more byproducts are formed which tend to degrade their performance. Not sure if that can (partially) explain what happened in Scott's case though.
I don't see how instability will lead to this. This was caused by excess chamber pressure that broke whatever the weak points were. Whether that was a manufacturing defect in the gun or the shell powder load, who knows. But instability of the shell powder doesn't make it more explosive, it would just cause it to explode unintentionally.
I know this video is years old at this point, but big shoutout to your dad for acting quickly and saving your life. I’m glad you’re still with us buddy 🙏🏼
I just found this video from a different accident video. The thing I see that saved this man's life mostly is the fact that even though he was hit in the face with tremendous force he didn't lose consciousness. If he had been knocked out he would probably be dead. The fact that he wasn't knocked unconscious is amazing in itself.
@@SmileyDave-h5z A lot of people wouldn't even think about shoving a thumb in it either. There's a vid circling around of some Asian dude having his jugular artery slashed in a street fight. I'm still baffled about a man just stuck his thumb inside his own neck to survive and stayed conscious the whole time. His face smashed, his neck severed, his lung punctured and he's got a thumb in his neck but still stayed conscious. This makes me give you more respect man...
You'd be surprised just how far you can force your own body. It's common knowledge for doctors that it is possible to avoid passing out with enough mental stimulus or just really not wanting to pass out. For him it was thinking of his family and recalling memories that helped along with having to hold a conversation with the 911 operator. I've been able to avoid passing out in a similar way myself, although, in my case, my low blood pressure wasn't caused by a injury or loss of blood. So passing out would have been safer than staying conscious (aka: my life was not at risk) His story teaches some really good advice for medical emergencies: to block any holes in your body that are bleeding by any means possible, and to keep talking and having a conversation if you or someone else is at risk of passing out.
That's what saved his life, the pressures from the thumb allowed for coagulation, so that blood can continue to circulate throughout his body. If it had been his carotid which is next jugular I'm not so sure he would've survived.
@@terrenceklaverweide6356 Both statements are true: if either one had panicked (which would have been perfectly understandable under the circumstances) Scott probably wouldn't be here today.

I wear prescription glasses and thought those would do fine till I watched this. Just ordered several pairs of over-the-glasses safety glasses. They look dorky but I'd rather be dorky and alive than not dorky and not alive. If he hadn't had those glasses on, I believe that end cap would've killed him.
@@Bender260 I personally wear prescription safety glasses myself, always. Saved me once from a probable serious eye injury caused by a jacket pealing off and returning from the guy in the bay next to me. Cut up my eyebrow pretty bad and it needed to be glued shut to stop the bleeding.
First thing I thought when he showed the tattle mark on the glasss. That would have just ridden his cheek right through the eye, probably forcing bone fragments in even worse places. The glasses are probably what broke his orbital bones as they absorbed the energy.
I agree what a guy his dad is to stay collected during that I couldn’t imagine how I would act if it was one of my kids I hope I would act the same and do everything you could

That was a horrible accident man thank god and that thumb of yours that you are back and still with us i hope that no accident like this happens to you ever again 😢❤️❤️😄
@Green Mamba Games It wasn't poorly designed at all, the gun was built to withstand upwards of 55k PSI with the threads rated for around 80k psi, he got a Bubbas Pissing Hot reload that produced over 85k psi. The only thing that could have helped would have been some sort of shroud that helped shield the shooter incase it explods but there really isnt any location on the gun to place said shroud. Don't blame the gun blame the ammo.

I’ll tell you exactly what the issue was! A lot of old military rounds used Nitrocellulose powder in their ammunition and that stuff is basically a derivative of Nitroglycerin, the older it gets the more unstable it becomes!
This should be top comment!
Gnarly..

So passing out would have been safer than staying conscious (aka: my life was not at risk)
His story teaches some really good advice for medical emergencies: to block any holes in your body that are bleeding by any means possible, and to keep talking and having a conversation if you or someone else is at risk of passing out.
That's what saved his life, the pressures from the thumb allowed for coagulation, so that blood can continue to circulate throughout his body. If it had been his carotid which is next jugular I'm not so sure he would've survived.
Dont forget the W shaped finger
this is the power of mankind. we are extremely resilient creatures if we have help and prompt medical attention
After learning of the hockey goalie and his severed jugular, i understand the need for the thumb in the neck now.
