As a young man, I saved up to buy a Remington 870. Although I had fired this shotgun literally a thousand times, in the presure of my first skeet competition I forgot to pump the gun on a double. It was an awful embarrassment, but, a great lesson. I never failed to cycle the gun after a shot again. At least I learned while losing a contest rather than losing my life in a self-defense encounter.
Agree that shotguns are hard for many people to handle (especially new shooters) and they do lack capacity. But they're not subject to the same awful restrictions as other popular firearms and have a defensive potential that's hard to beat, especially at the typical engagement ranges.
I carried a 14” Benelli M1 Super 90, for a Sheriff’s Office, and couldn’t make it through a single qualification course without a major malfunction, that couldn’t be fixed by the armorer “in the field”. Granted it was old, and well used, and abused. Every other agency I worked for, I had either a 870 or 590, and never had an issue with them! Yes, a pump gun is more complicated than just turning the safety off and pulling the trigger. This being said, you have to train with it, just like any other firearm that you would use in a life and death situation, whether you’re a combat troop, LEO or civilian that carries or has a home defense gun.

@@thewordman6013 If it's so dangerous to others inside your house, why would you be trying to "get to" that weapon, presumably to employ it against the invaders? Any use of it poses a danger to your family members in other rooms, by your own statements. It would seem unwise and illogical.
@@torjones1701 last resort and at that point, I will have my family behind the range, if you get my meaning. All I'm saying is, my AR will not be my first choice, not saying it won't be a choice
I'd put the pump-action guns ahead of the semi-autos for a home defense application, but your list is solid. I'd also swap in the Kel-Tec KS7 for the KSG. The KS7 is much lighter, smaller, and easier to maneuver in a home than the KSG, and it's also easier to use. The KS7 cycles like butter - much smoother than the KSG. Seven (+1) 2-3/4" shells, with a side-saddle for reloading, is plenty of firepower. It can kick, but low-recoil 2-/3/4" defensive loads work well with it. If that's not enough rounds, there's a magazine extension for a total of eleven 2-3/4" rounds in the tube. Another way to go is with a dozen mini-shells of #4 Buck or 1.0 oz slug in the standard tube; seventeen or so mini shells with the extended tube.
The safety on the 1301 is reversible for lefties like myself. It also uses the Baretta Optima HD, choke tubes. Meprolight makes a set of tritium replacement sights (front and back) for under $100. Buy the set made for the Benelli Nova. (Hint: Baretta owns Benelli) GG&G Tactical makes an awesome +2 mag extension with barrel clamp, for much less than Nord. I keep my 1301 loaded with buffered #4 buckshot, through a full choke. And the glowing green tritium dots give me lots of confidence in this beast of a gun!
If you're new to shotguns, one of the biggest takeaways from this video is at 7:14. That 10 second right there is one of the most important messages out there.
But in the movies the bad guy gets scared and run away. U telling me movies are a lie and that doesn’t work 😭🤣🤣. Im jp lol. Idk who or why someone would think that works.
The Tavor TS12 is totally bad ass! 16 shots of 12 gauge shells in 5 seconds in an incredible amount of fire power in a short amount of time. Also love the Barrett 1301 Tactical, and the Benelli M4 Tactical. The Stoeger M3000 is a great lower cost option.
My go to home defense is a Mossberg 500. I have used that sound several times so far to scare off intruders. If that fails a round or two will make the point nicely. If I had to use it inside I'm not concerned about the walls. I can fix drywall and wiring.
Benelli m4 is king. But those light Beretta 1301 are beast mode. Love how the 1301 has oversized controls from factory. But pretty hard to beat reliability of the m4. Dual pistons ensures if one fails it stays in the fight. Watched my friend run his with one piston as an experiment. Also seen a vid on the tube of a guy running his m4 with both o rings removed and ran flawlessly.
I have a Remington 870 I bought in about 1992. It is smooth as butter. It has never failed me and I don't recall ever short shucking it (other guns yes, but not this one). I would grab it over any other long gun (including my AR) for home defense but I live on 12 acres. Plus, I've always got a handgun on me if it ever fails me. If I had $1,300 to blow I would buy a Beretta 1301 in FDE. That's a beautiful gun and I've heard real good things about them.
Great channel and thanks for serving. My take on it goes like this: for new shooters even though the 12ga has a lot of recoil, in a home defense situation that stopping power could prove the difference. If a new shooter uses a pistol they might have to land a few rounds to end the fight. But with a 12ga most likely not. I would stick with a semi auto shotgun though instead of a pump for new shooters. That Tavor 12 is awesome btw 😊
Love how he doesn’t choose the M4 because of price/availability. Should be titled ‘Top 5 Shotguns that you should buy from Classic Firearms’ Also WHO TF PUT THE OPTIC ON THAT FAL
I think you're over thinking this. The biggest reason he probably didnt pick the m4 as number 1 is because everyone and their brother already knows about the m4 and how good it is and youtube doesnt not need another top 10 shotguns video with the m4 as #1. It just doesnt make for good content. Plus a lot of influential people in the shooting industry have talked about how good the 1301 is.

@@mthlaxer so now someone thinks the IWI TS12 or an 870 is a better home defense shotgun than a damn Benelli. If enough people put it at number one, that’s okay. It’s not uncool to like good shit. Very interesting review. Here is the thing about home defense that needs to be addressed. Who is the home defender? That should be, but rarely is, the first question that needs to be asked. For us at OPSol, that was the ONLY question. In our cases, specifically, it was wives and daughters. As a result, we developed the OPSol adapter specifically (at the time), for the Maverick 88, using Aguila Minishells (again, this was 8 years ago). Low recoil, lethal, extra rounds, and almost all they family can grab it and use it. Mossberg, to their credit, saw what we were working toward, and after a year of having some adapters to work with, rolled out the shockwave at Shot Show 2017, with the adapter and minishells. Put a brace on a shockwave, with this combination, and see the difference. Home Defense is a Family Effort.
I’ve got the panzer m4 and it’s been 100% reliable with buckshot and anything over 1300 fps. 7 round tube and enlarged charging handle. Only thing else I’m changing is the stock to a Mesa tactical urbino. 7+1 is a decent amount of firepower to have.
As I have one, on the Mossberg 590, the "action release" ISN'T on the top rear of the receiver, the "Safety" is! The "action release" is just behind of the triggerguard on the left rear. I know it is hard to keep up with ALL the small details, yet accuracy is important. Keep up the good work guys!
Completely agreed that the sound alone of a pump-action shotgun racking will not deter a bad guy...... But on the other hand if you rack a shotgun and the individual does not seem in any way deterred you now have a very important piece of information about that individual which may be critical in the coming seconds.
The berreta 1301 gen 2 tactical comes with the extended tube, One thing I consider for home defense, If you live in the suberbs. Buckshot won't travel through your nieghbors house
The shotgun has always been my last choice in a home defense role. That said, my shotgun choices tend to gravitate towards the 870/500 pump AS LONG AS the time is committed to learning the weapon. I have recently been recommending the same Beretta series to newer shooters insisting on a shotgun. Well done as always.
I agree. While they are extremely accurate, they are just really bulky and it would be hard to maneuver in your home with a long gun vs a handgun. Follow up shots are extremely slow too, especially with a pump action. You miss your first shot and you're screwed. Atleast with a pistol you can pop off multiple rounds in a matter of seconds.
My favorite home defense shotgun is my pump action Mossberg 590 with pistol grip. Great for home defense for its size and reliability and accessories available. Also it’s American made Family owned business
I saw two meN run away from a bedroom window like greyhounds one night after I loudly racked my 12ga pump from inside. While not dependable, it does work sometimes.
I'll toss in a wildcard: Mossberg Shockwave or it's Remington equivalent. Not much in the capacity department but ultimate maneuverability in close quarter scenarios.
Maybe as a pool hall or bar is just a little bit of a different environment from your home at the wee hours of the morning against an unknown number of adversaries of an unknown mental state looking to do unknown types of mayhem. As for myself, if I hear someone trying to get into my place uninvited, I'm racking that gun way before they get in there.
My home defense shotgun is a Stevens 320 5+1 brass bead sights 179 dollars and 100% reliable the thing I like about shotguns is they are simple and affordable and loaded correctly are by far the most reliable 1 shot man stoppers
I think the ability to complete administrative reloads or changing shotshells without dumping 2 rounds out. That would be a nice feature to include in the deep dive of the 1301.
My favorite firearm for home defense is the sbr ar platform. Very wieldy and easy to operate. Getting around corners without announcing you are about to go through a threshold is paramount at preserving EOS.
My first fun I bought was a walnut stock 12 gauge mossberg 535. I love mine. The first gun I shot was a semiautomatic 22 caliber rifle. I wanted to take the to go big or go home approach.
I actually just bought my first 12 gauge (like 7th gun though) and its the fde 1301 tac also! Before my career job, I was working in a gun store and loved those things. Finally saw one in my gun store again and scooped it up. Totally agree theyre the best bang for the buck imo. Thankfully there are more accessories these days but they're usually out of stock, but what isn't these days?
We depend on a stoeger coach gun...it is only 2 ready shots, but absolutely simple, reliable, and quiet...my instructions to the missus: anyone at bedroom door, blow them up...just ambush the sh!t outta them...she has a .38 handy if needed, but 1 shell of 00 will solve most problems...
I have the Benelli m4 and I think it's better then your number one pick. Holds more ammo better recoil just the price sucks. But the best home defence firearm is the one you have.
I Just Bought My Tavor TS12 Saturday From Palmetto State Armory, I Cannot Wait To Take It To The Range, What Brand Of #00 Buckshots Does It Pairs Best With? Thank You!!!
Buy several brands/loads. It takes 100-200 rounds to really break it in (min was around 120 rounds). Take note which yours prefers and stick with it. Seems every Ts12 is different from the videos I've seen. Mine likes Federal Powershok 1600fps (slugs).
I still feel like the standard KSG is the best shotgun for home defense. Not only is it a high capacity pump action, but it's one of the most compact shotguns in existence lengthwise, and it has the ability to hold all accessories you could ever want.
You deffinetly had some great picks but I think the Panzer Ar12 deffinetly deserved a spot in there. Especially for the price and reliability. Do I think the shot gun has a place for home defense...absolutley !
I'm not sure if it's the best, but I certainly appreciate the details on the different choices you've lined out on the video. I would do the panzer and then save up for the Benelli.
if I wake up in the middle of the night to a home invasion, groggy and hard to see, the stopping power of a shotty seems reliable. Especially with some spread so I don't have to be super accurate.
Semi-automatic shotgun is a fantastic weapon unless you're a newbie and then you should stick to a pump-action, Because if that's semi-automatic shotgun jams a newbie is going to have a hell of a time unjamming it and getting it to run again. My opinion.
I disagree. I've seen plenty of new shooters short stroke pump shotguns and then fumble trying to figure out how to unload it. A reliable semiautomatic would be easier for them to figure out since you just have to pull a trigger and some even have bolt hold opens so they know they're out when they get a "click", instead of pump actions where they have to look for the release (new shooters always have to look for it to find it) before opening it and adding a shell straight in the chamber.
Half the time even experienced people will jack out the first round of a pump shotgun when chambered, especially when under pressure. Witnessed it a lot over the years.
We depend on a simple coach gun...when hands are shaking and eyes still blurry for that bump in the night we don't need to think anything but point and shoot 1st...in about 99% of scenarios that quick 1st aimed shot is a winner...
I picked up a bullpup from radikal arms. I didn't buy it specifically for home defense, but I think it meets a lot of the requirements. Middle of the road for cost, I can get a 10 or more round mag, and even tho it has a 24" barrel, bc of the bullpup configuration, its only 38" overall, better for clearing spaces than the AR style, which run about 8-10" longer with the same length barrel. Thanks for the video, BTW. Awesome Content.
Your leaving the best part of a pump shotgun out!!! The sound of pumping it is understood by probably every person on the planet. Oddly enough try this. Rack an AK then the pump. They almost sound the same!
I instantly become skeptical when I see the title of a video as "The top" or "The best of the best" because the video always turns out to be the persons favorite firearm or the one that he owns, which is okay. I would like to see the titles be changed to like, "Great choices for home defense shotgun or whatever." Too many fine firearms out there to be selecting a handful and state they are the best or the top. With that being said, the best firearm is the one that you train and train with.
Don’t believe you needed to qualify that you’re “not a lawyer”, you weren’t giving legal advice. Definitely sound advice though. No law degree required there.

@@torjones1701 I understand your confusion. But, that weapon is dangerous inside a house when you have family members in other rooms. I prefer to use weapons that won't travel through multiple walls or even into my neighbors house. The AR is my last choice. And yes, I can reek havoc with it.
IMHO a shot gun for inside the house is too dam much
I'd put the pump-action guns ahead of the semi-autos for a home defense application, but your list is solid.
How do you feel about bazookas for home defence?
@@SlinkiestTortoise23 : Odd comment, considering I wrote a 7-shell shotgun was enough compared to a 14-shell one.
The ts12 looks like it fires phased plasma in the 40 watt range.
If you're new to shotguns, one of the biggest takeaways from this video is at 7:14. That 10 second right there is one of the most important messages out there.
“Don’t ever put your life in the hands of sound”
-Clint 2021-
Agreed... if I'm "relying on a sound" its going to be the sound of the gun firing a round (or 5) at them
But in the movies the bad guy gets scared and run away. U telling me movies are a lie and that doesn’t work 😭🤣🤣. Im jp lol. Idk who or why someone would think that works.
My pops always used to say the sound of a pump is the international sound of “Get the fuck out, or get the fuck dead” 😂
"Just put two blasts in the air to scare them away"- Beijing Biden
I like to use my flame thrower for home defense. They never expect a big ball of fire and flames coming towards them 🤣
😂🤣
I do the same thing and it has the added benefit of burning the house down so you don't have to defend it anymore
Best one on this list for the price is the Mossberg 590A1. Built like a tank and reliable. And won’t break the bank like these others.
Absolutely correct sir. If you are even remotely familiar with shotguns, the 590A1 will never malfunction. The ammo might, but not the gun.
We used the 870 in Corrections. With a pump you can run a wide variety of loads without worrying about ejection or feeding issues
Great Video Clint! I love the Benelli m4 but you can’t go wrong with a Remington 870 especially the Wingmaster👍
My go to home defense is a Mossberg 500. I have used that sound several times so far to scare off intruders. If that fails a round or two will make the point nicely. If I had to use it inside I'm not concerned about the walls. I can fix drywall and wiring.
I like the Keltec KS7. It's pump action, but it's bull pup design makes it easy to maneuver.
That Kel-Tec is just a Star Wars blaster
Friend blasted a softball sized hole thru a 24" diameter white pine tree trunk with his keltek 😲
All star wars blaster are guns lol
Should be titled ‘Top 5 Shotguns that you should buy from Classic Firearms’
Also WHO TF PUT THE OPTIC ON THAT FAL
I think you're over thinking this. The biggest reason he probably didnt pick the m4 as number 1 is because everyone and their brother already knows about the m4 and how good it is and youtube doesnt not need another top 10 shotguns video with the m4 as #1. It just doesnt make for good content. Plus a lot of influential people in the shooting industry have talked about how good the 1301 is.
"The number 5 best home defense shotgun for the first time gun owner is this large complex and convoluted Israeli contraption that I just happen to have for sale"
- This Tool.
@@mthlaxer so now someone thinks the IWI TS12 or an 870 is a better home defense shotgun than a damn Benelli.
If enough people put it at number one, that’s okay. It’s not uncool to like good shit. It’s good for a reason. Give it the credit it deserves.
Or if you wanna be edgy, put it at number two and make the 1301 number one. Who cares. But come on, dude.
@@mthlaxer seems as if you might be the overthinker
He said himself that a lot of his stuff is geared towards newbs. Not everyone feels the need to drop over 2k on a shotgun for home defense.
Damn cruising the range with peeps who don’t know how to run a pump shotgun sounds like a blast
I use a Mossberg Shockwave. I love it.
We had a 1301 comp sit at work for 3 years. I was really sad to see it go as I started to really want it. But they are great shotguns.
PPQ M2 Q4 Tact was my 1st home defense gun. Now have that and a PSA 7.5" AR15 pistol in 300 blackout.
*The top 5 shotguns we sell and can make money off of*
Fixed that for you
I like my civil war revolver for home defense. When the bad guys hear the black powder pouring down the cylinders they run as fast as they can.
Thank you for talking about the "sound" of rackin one is a deterrent. I've been hearing that and wondered when that became a thing.
I'll toss in a wildcard: Mossberg Shockwave or it's Remington equivalent. Not much in the capacity department but ultimate maneuverability in close quarter scenarios.
i’m actually thinking about picking one up
#1 high capacity
#2 lightest weight ratio
#3 smallest barrel length
That eliminates all pump action shotguns.
A police buddy of mine said no matter how loud the jukebox was when you racked the slide on a pump shotgun you had everybody’s undivided attention
I believe the Beretta 1301 has a capacity of 5 rounds + 1 in the chamber!
All I’m saying is if I was someone breaking in to a home and heard the very distinct sound of that pump action my ass would pucker up real quick! Haha
The Panzer M4 seems great. Too bad no one ever has it in stock.
I’m glad to see the TS12 getting some love! Mine nestled beautifuly next to my bedside. She’s a running she’s a track star!
Make more vids about the black ace tactical semi auto shotgun (aka) transformer shotgun
I have one. The bullpup FD12. I LOVE IT! 😊👍
@@timothylikes782 cool
Sorry Black Aces are junk. Not to mention their customer service is a joke they don't back their products
I honestly just want a side by side coach gun. And I just love break action shotguns in general. Though, you're usually only getting one or two shots.
I would too I just can't find any I wanted to find a super cheap one to make a new project
Shouldn't really need more than 2 shots when you think practically about a home invasion and what that entails... unless you're a drug dealer i guess
A new 1301 Tactical & a Glock 17 for HD here. Thanks for the review...
How much did you pay?
@@papatorr3669I Paid $1,400 but, After Tax And Shipping, It Came Out To $1,525.
Buy several brands/loads. It takes 100-200 rounds to really break it in (min was around 120 rounds). Take note which yours prefers and stick with it. Seems every Ts12 is different from the videos I've seen. Mine likes Federal Powershok 1600fps (slugs).
@@marcmonge3704 Ok Thanks!!!
I still feel like the standard KSG is the best shotgun for home defense. Not only is it a high capacity pump action, but it's one of the most compact shotguns in existence lengthwise, and it has the ability to hold all accessories you could ever want.
Remington Versa Max Tactical for me. Love it
Mossberg pump little shorty .... yeah !
Surprised the moss berg 930 Spx tactical didn’t make the cut.
Too many possible issues (mostly in the past) and feels pretty cheap in hand considering its role as a semi-auto. I own one and love it
You deffinetly had some great picks but I think the Panzer Ar12 deffinetly deserved a spot in there. Especially for the price and reliability. Do I think the shot gun has a place for home defense...absolutley !
I'm not sure if it's the best, but I certainly appreciate the details on the different choices you've lined out on the video. I would do the panzer and then save up for the Benelli.
"Wot the fuck is that?" "It's a shotgun Sol" "It's a fucking anti-aircraft gun, Vincent!"
Paid almost 2000 dollars for the Benelli m4 as my "dream shotgun". Worth it? maybe...jury's still out on that as of now.
Got my M4 for about $1600 a couple years back...Love it!! I prefer Keltec for close quarters due to length but DAMN my Benelli is smooth!
My Mossberg 930 holds 10 shells and is lightweight and is cheaper than your first pick.
Well played sir!
Personal top 5 ..
1. Benelli M4 / M1014..
2. Mossy 590A1 20" Blackwater..
3. Beretta 1301..
4. Rem V3 / Versamax Tactical..
5. FN SLP
if I wake up in the middle of the night to a home invasion, groggy and hard to see, the stopping power of a shotty seems reliable.
Anyone know the shotgun on the back wall that’s above the scar… looks great
I think it might b a Mossberg 940 Jerry miculek model could b wrong tho
Check out the Salient GLD
No offense, But if you ever rack that slide to scare someone. I hope you don’t wind up wishing you have had that extra rd.
Agreed.
5:19 what is the capacity of the Remington? Please answer
Judging by the mag side, 5+1 or 6+1
BENELLI M4 is still #1
The centurion is one of my favorites 10 rounds of semi auto 12 gage finicky high brass only .
Swap the 1 and 2 but Good List!, I'll take any of those haha
What about an AA12? 😂
AA12 shotgun is my favorite
Ya the sound wont scare a bad guy away but they sure as hell wouldn't think "o I got nothing to worry about it's just a shotgun"
Don’t believe you needed to qualify that you’re “not a lawyer”, you weren’t giving legal advice. Definitely sound advice though. No law degree required there.
The anti-gunners don't care if it's legal advice or not. They'll sue. OR you could consider their thought process as: When it doubt, sue.
