Has anyone noticed Amber using the term “I dug it”… she is morphing into a ‘70s child every minute. Welcome! 🙂
Just needs to say that a performer is Groovy to make the transformation complete.
Dig it!
Far out, man !
And all that came from the hippy, flower power 60's..
Cowabunga!
The guitarist name is Robbie van leeuwen. Thumbs up from The Netherlands!
So glad you did the original from 1969, not the remake from Bananarama in 1986. Shocking Blue was a Dutch band, the singer didn't even speak English, learned the lyrics phonetically.
This is from the Netherlands yes the band is Dutch singer is MARISKA VERES oh yes I remember it well 🇳🇱🐻❤
Mariska Veres is not alive anymore 😪
Amber, you would have been a fantastic 60's flower child..💕🌺🌼
Shocking Blue - Venus I have always loved this song.
Mariska was soo beautiful !!
The beautiful lady singing, Mariska Vere's,RIP,😎❤️
If you listen carefully you can hear Mariska Veres sing “godness” on a mountain top…there was a typo in the lyrics and she didn’t know English very well so she sang what she read instead of the intended word “goddess.” The song was written by the band’s guitarist, Robbie van Leeuwan.
just came here to say the same thing. Glad others know about this oddity.
All she needs now is flowers in her hair
When I first started paying attention to pop/rock music I discovered:
"You Keep Me Hanging On" by Kim Wilde
"Hazy Shdae of Winter" by The Bangles
"Venus" by Bananarama
After I got really into music incluidng oldies, I discovered:
"You Keep Me Hanging On" by The Supremes
"Hazy Shade of Winter" by Simon & Garfunkel
"Vesus" by Shocking Blue
Oh yeah Hazy Shade of Winter was a big one from S&G.
Try "You Keep Me Hanging On" by Vanilla Fudge.
And the original are the best for me
They're actually done a reaction to the Bangles' cover of "Hazy Shade of Winter".
Haha. And 'American Pie' by Madonna?
Loved Jay's face when he glanced over to see Amber just zoned out
This song was remade in the 80s by a band named Bananarama. Pure 80s sound in that one, and a great band name. (That’s the version in the razor commercial)
Obviously I first heard of the Bananarama version, but I love this version for the female lead. Bananarama's version has more of a harmonic sound to it.
Never heard this version, just the Bananarama verson
@@jeremiahrose4681 not many people have this version is almost forgotten cause Banaramas 1986 remake was so huge
I had forgot that bananarama did this!!
You folks must be young. This song was popular, got played on the radio quite a bit for over 15 years before Bananarama. Most people knew the lyrics before the Bananarama version came out, back then.
This band is Dutch. It was the goal of the guitarist and band leader to have created a Jefferson Airplane/Starship equivalent in Europe. They essentially succeeded, because while not so popular here in the States, this band was huge in Europe. My favorites are "Never Marry A Railroad Man" and "Inkpot". Never Marry A Railroad Man can be equated to never marry a trucker, or sailor, or airline employee.... Inkpot, we don't use ink pots anymore, so it won't conceptually translate easily, but you needed/used ink pots all the time in the day. A good example of her vocals is on Send Me A Post Card Baby
Again old heroes from the Netherlands 🇳🇱
Yes! A number 1 in America!!
1967 to 1971 in my mind were the best 5 years of music ever. so much originality.
I think you're right. Great era!
This song was covered by Bananarama back in the 1980s. You need to listen to their version.
1970 I was a kid under 5 and I remember it was blaring on the radio. An international number one
“Never Marry a Railroad Man" was another great one from them.
Oh yeah. I would say it's better than Venus. 😀
Oh yeah 😎this song 🎵is lit 🔥
Pun intended. 😉
Ya'll are gonna love it 😀Enjoy 😉😉
This is from around 1970. Shocking Blue was a Dutch rock band. Their sound reminds me of Jefferson Airplane.
60’s songs all needed a compelling hook that grabbed you. To make it in the 60’s you had to have a charting single of 2:30- 3:00 minutes in length on AM radio. AM radio was king. FM was just getting its legs in the seventies.
“Green-Eyed Lady” by Sugarloaf was another top charting song of the same time. Every high school band played it.
Those were the days; KRLA 1110 AM with Wolfman Jack, Johnny Hayes, Dave Diamond, Dave Hull (Hullaballooer), Real Don Steele, Humble Harve, Machine Gun Kelly, Charlie Tuna. Then came KHJ 930 AM.
Loved "Green Eyed Lady"!!!
“Green-Eyed Lady” was a favorite of us kids that hung around together. If it came on the car radio, we'd stay in the car until the song was over. So cool.
The other thing is that it had to sound good on AM radio on a crappy speaker. One of the reasons for Spector's wall of sound.
The lead guitarist, Robby van Leeuwen, wrote the song. The other two band members were bass guitarist Klassje Van der Well and drummer Cornelius Van der Beck.
Didn't you leave someone out. Mariska Veres!!
One of the few Dutch bands to really hit it big, at least with a single
Dude, you forgot"Mariska"!😎
Didn't mention her because others already had--but hadn't noted the other band members.
@@bradsullivan2495 sorry 😎
The first thing I thought of was the razor commercial. Her long black hair was a wig if I'm not mistaken. She was actually compared to Cher. Never heard her compared to Grace Slick. She died from gallbladder cancer and was only 59. Great reaction!!
The first dutch band who reached number 1 on the Billboard hot 100 on 07/02/1970 my 9th bithday, My brother gave me this record on that day.
The band come from The Hague/ Holland. The one at the bassgitar is my uncle.
Groetjes uit Baltimore!
Shocking Blue was the first Dutch band to top the Billboard 100 with this song. Fun fact it only reached 2nd place over here in the Netherlands. They did some other pretty amazing stuff the one I love the most is Never Marry A Railroad Man. Or you could try Mighty Joe, a song that also made the charts in the US.
I heard it more on the compilation (like K Tel) LP ads on TV way back in the day.
That woman is LEGEND GRACE SLICK. Experts!
Some songs are not meant to be covered. This is one of them. That quintessential vibe makes the song.
This band had so many amazing songs, unfortunately they are mainly just known for Venus here in America. Shocking You,Hot Sand,Demon Lover,Never Marry A Railroad Man,Love Buzz are just a few other examples of this super underrated band.
Also "Send me a Postcard"
Love "Hot Sand"
Love Buzz had some airplay as a cover and the first single of a pretty famous band called Nirvana.
I like "Never Marry A Railroadman" and "Send Me A Postcard".
This song remains a treasure to this day. It shines through the years, through it's commercial use, and still is worth taking the time to listen.
Another song worth listening is Never marry a railroad man . Awesome composition
One of the greatest singles hits of the 60's
I still love hearing this song. So great!
Shocking Blue had a number of hits. Have a listen to Never Marry a Railroad Man.
The British all-girl group Bananarama did a cover version of this song in the 80's that is more upbeat. You may want to check it out one of these Female Fridays. Keep up the great work!! You guys are the best.
I have been trying to get them to do Venus (Bananarama version) or Cruel Summer for female Friday.
Which was much more successful, and popular, albeit not having the organic feel of the original, being based around synths.
Please do the Banarama cover! Pure '80s!
It doesn't compare to this original gem
This version is better ....and they are the originator of this song....the 60's were amazing.....
OMG this is one of my favorite singles of all time!
That strumming guitar break is epic!
Amber, you are 100% correct when you said this was 60's (1969, to be exact) and psychedelic rock. You have come SO far in your musical knowledge! Lead singer Mariska Veres (RIP) had a great voice and stage presence. As for the name of the Jefferson Airplane/Starship lead singer you ask about, that would be Grace Slick. 🙂
For your next Shocking Blue outing, give "Mighty Joe" a spin. My favourite by them.
I just discovered this band about 2 yrs ago. This whole album is freakin phenominal!
did you notice the similarity ,the song " loving girl" from 74? to the kiss (ace freley) song "new york groove" from 77?
@bobbyj5375 did not! But I have the Ace record and now I want to compare them. Thanks for the heads up.
Still have that album on vinyl, the original one.
For your education, on this date in 1964 the Beatles had the top 5 songs in country. Please Please Me no. 5,I Want to Hold Your Hand no.4 She Loves You no,3, Twist and Shout no. 2 and Can't Buy Me Love no. 1. No other person or group has ever done that. They also had another 7 songs in the top 100.
THANKS for playing the original. Grace Slick sang with Jefferson Airplane.
GREAT SHE'S GOT IT !!!
Hit #1 on the Hot 100 three times: the Shocking Blue original in 1970, Bananarama’s cover in 1986, and as the intro to the Stars On 45 Medley in 1981.
Nobody seems to remember the Stars On 45 Medley (yet alone that it was a #1 hit). The songwriter and guitarist, Robbie van Leeuwen from Shocking Blue, did very well just from this song alone. He's also the only living member remaining from the group that recorded Venus.
Love me some Stars on 45.
I still have the original 45 and the 12" LP of the single. I downloaded their only LP on iTunes.
Lots of great covers.
@@Refugeefromcalif They had 4 albums, Stars On Long Play 1981, Stars On Long Play II 1981, Stars On Long Play III 1982, Stars On Frankie 1987. I have the first three and really enjoy them.
Your right it was in the venus commercial. This is the original band. The long hair guitarist was high as a kite. it was in a documentary. This song is a one hit wonder for them
Amber, I was thinking the same. Her vocals give me that Grace Slick vibe.
This melody has been used in numerous tv commercials over the years.
Finally, Shocking Blue,more please 😎
Love This Song. Crushed on the Lead Singer. 🥰
If you like her vocals, listen to a band called Renaissance. One of those bands few remember. Carpet of the Sun would be a good start. 60/70s. Annie Haslams vocals are unbelievable.
Oh yeah, Renaissance and Northern Lights was great - one of my dads favourites that he keeps forgetting to add to his music player.
Ashes are Burning also, Annie has that voice! Was so lucky to see them in a small bar/music venue in San Diego
OK....how about 'Mother Russia' by Renaissance?
@@mnomadvfx Iron Claw bro. The song is skull crusher
loved this song for many years, since it first came out...
Jordan, the reason this music resonates with you is that it is raw and unfiltered without the ability at the time to smooth things out and polish the sound. They just didn't have access to the equipment of today where things like that are done.
"Convoy" is a 1975 novelty song performed by C. W. McCall (better known as Bill Fries) that became a number-one song on both the country and pop charts in the US and is listed 98th among Rolling Stone magazine's 100 Greatest Country Songs of All Time. This song came out at a time when CB radios were popular and was used in a movie called "Convoy" and even being a novelty song...it was a cool song to sing drivin' down the highway. C. W. McCall passed away on April 1st of this year. The song received newfound popularity with the rise of the 2022 Freedom Convoy, to which Fries gave his approval shortly before he died. Give it a try...PLEASE!!
YES!! 👍🏻😃👍🏻😃👍🏻
OMG! I knew the Bananarama version of this song from the '80s, but I never knew it was a cover! I'm learning more from your channel (and your wonderful followers) than I ever expected. Thank you!
Wow, you must be kidding! I like Bananarama, but this song is much better by Shocking Blue.
@@richbrake9910 I...never said it wasn't.
Another great song by Shocking Blue was Never marry a railroad man.
My favorite version 🥰
This was my favorite song growing up! From the winter of 1969/1970.
On my 12th birthday my parents got me a phonograph and two 45 records. My first records. This and the Guess Who “No time”.
Today I have over 3000 records. It’s been a great ride.
You had cool parents! I fell in love with this song at the same age. The 45 is still around here somewhere. Discovered the Guess Who a little later when FM radio took over.
@@cmsilva534 yeah great parents. Thanks and have a great day
My favorite band of the 1970s and 80's. Venus is a great song, as well have sung by many well known artists.
Great reaction. It brought to mind another great female vocalist from the 60's and 70's. Melanie and her song "Lay down (Candles in the Rain)" really speaks to that time for me. I hope you get a chance to hear it sometime.
Yes
Especially with the Edwin Hawkins singers backing Melanie up in that song
When I think of Melanie I think of "Brand New Key". Such a silly song but brings back great feelings. Thanks for reminding me.
Agree. I’ve suggested it a few times for female Friday.
Mariska has a great voice. When I first heard this song in the spring of '69 I like many others actually thought it was a guy singing.
Such a incredible song
I'm your Venus, I'm your fire "what's your desire"
Hi guy,s thank you for reaction on shocking blue, a stunnig band of the 60,s formed in Den Haag The Netherlands. However there are more bands from Den Haag in the 60,s and 70,s, Check out Earth and Fire,Q65,The Shoes and many more. Greetings from Amsterdam.....
I love Earth & Fire! They have some great songs (Weekend, Memories, Seasons). And I don’t know how well known the band Lucifer - with Henny Huisman on drums - is outside the Netherlands. The song House for Sale gives me goosebumps. The Netherlands has some great female singers!
Amber I saw it on your face when you recognized it! I wondered if you would! Hey and it was on that great Remember the Titans soundtrack.
And someone said you’re morphing into a 70’s child. I think you’ve always been one, just born in the wrong decade! Love it! ♥️
Yes. Her look when Mariska first sang “She’s got it!” was priceless. I first heard Bananarama’s cover but love the original so much more.
great one someone else suggested also...Melanie with Edwin Hawkins singers "Lay Down"...what a voice and Woodstock related
Mariska Veres sung this 1 time No. 1 song in the Hot 100 :-) The other No. 1 song from The Netherlands was George Baker Selection with "Little Green Bag" :-)
The US only really knows Venus, but I bought a greatest hits cd and they had quite a few good songs on it. Send Me A Postcard was my next favorite after Venus. Also, fun fact: Nirvana’s first single was a cover of Shocking Blue’s Love Buzz.
Yes. There's also "Never Marry A Railroad Man".
Yea dude. Send me a Postcard #1 - Shoking You #2
Great dance tune. I remember it well. Anybody notice the left handed drummer/drum kit?
"Send Me a Postcard" is an absolute must by the Shocking Blue! Highly recommend.
I was a toddler when this was released. I remember hearing it at a young age and being completely enthralled with the song. Great Dutch band. Mariska Veres, the lead singer, unfortunately is no longer with us. RIP. Bananarama did a great cover in the 80s. Would be a great listen on Female Friday's.
R.I.P. Mariska...... There where many great bands from the Netherlands in the 60's.
Shocking Blue, George Baker Selection, TeeSet, Focus.......
a pop tune I must admit that is not in my vinyl 45 collection. Now hearing it again, & your reaction, it is a 45 I shall be looking for.
One of my favorite songs from my senior year in high school. Check out "Vehicle" by the Ides Of March. "Circle Sky" by the Monkees is another favorite from the same year. Nice job you guys.
I was just 11 , when this hit was released. Was already into this music and this unique sound. It's ageless!
Time to serious consider these women artists for Female Friday or any day!
Carole King
Patti Smith
Chrissie Hynde of The Pretenders
It's Too Late by Carole King!
Freida went solo for a while after ABBA broke up and since the women were the leads ABBA can also qualify for Female Friday.
I've recommended The Pretenders - Middle of the Road has some harmonica so you know they'll love that, plus Chrissie is just a legend.
Yes!! I also want to add......
A Group Called Smith- Baby It's You
Anything by Carly Simon..😁
Carole King is very important to music. Very few people didn't own her album "Tapestry"
ONE OF THE BEST BANDS I'VE EVER HEARD. MARISKA VERES, PHENOMENON.
I read that the lead singer didn’t know one word of English. She sang the song phonetically.
Sort of how Ritchie Valenz sang "La Bamba" or how I sing along with "Suki Yaki" by Kyu Sakamoto
Correct, & that’s why she sang godness instead of goddess on a mountain top, there was a typo & she didn’t understand to correct it.
You always mention liking 50s 60s 70s music best. It's because back then we actually PLAYED our instruments. We didn't have autotune or protools. If the drummer messed up a fill we had to do the whole song over. And over and over and over, depending on the drummer. You knew who a guitarist was by the way he fretted the note, the way he picked, the way he held that bend for just the right amount of time. That's the part of yourself, your soul if you will, that you put into the music that you create. You guys get that. Thank you both for letting others hear this amazing music that we created.
Everyone should check out more of Shocking Blue. Great group!
This is one of my all time faves!!! ❤
Big difference between the 50's and 60's music. The 60's heralded in a completely new sound, the beginnings of the hippie movement in music. The 50's was a lot of do-wop.
Groovy! Thx for the junior high school memories! The Rascals are groovy too!
I'm your Venus, I'm your fire.. at your desire... Gotta love these lyrics... Great reaction.
I mostly heard the Bananarama version, but you can never beat the original.
I met the drummer in Rotterdam. I said, "OMG we were all in love with your singer!". He told me that she was the reason they did not make it to the top, apparently, she put on weight to the point where the TV bookings stopped. He earned a million Guildas from this one song.
That's sad
One of my "Guilty Pleasure" video's from the 80's is Banannarama's cover of this song ... that is all ... Carry on
Ha, I knew Amber would recognize it from the commercials! Also suspected you'd dig the vibe of the OG song.
Gerry Rafferty- "Right down the Line" and Al Stewart- "Time Passages" and "Year of the Cat"
Great one-hit wonder in the US. Mariska Veres on lead vocal. 1969, Dutch band.
Shocking Blue was definitely not a one hit wonder... they have many great songs other than Venus...
You are correct. In the US they were a one hit wonder.
Have you heard some of their other songs? I've just discovered them recently... Wow!!!
Not a one hit wonder,many great songs,😎
Hit wonder ?? No my frend
Jordan, your guess about why in the 50s and 60s sound different is precisely the equipment - like you said. Big advances in multitrack recording were seen in the mid to late 60s. The sound and how it was rendered definitely changed, definitely became fuller.
This track was originally recorded on a Studer 2-track in The Netherlands in April 1969. Amazing sound considering this technology. New recording now have the original remixed to sound even better.
WOW! One of my all time favorites! Never imagined you guys would react to it. The song was a #1 hit for them, but their only hit in the United States.
Mighty Joe just missed being a top 40 hit in the U.S.
The Righteous Brothers - Rock and Roll Heaven 1974 A must listen.
Guys, I think Amber is morphing into a 70's child. She is so into the music of our time, I love it.
Venus was released in the late 1969 so not quit 70s
Grace Slick is the Jefferson Airplane singer. There's a couple of great UA-cam videos of her singing a couple of their hits a capella
A superhit from the 60!
Brings back a lot of memories.
Classic 60's psychedelia. I love the "light shows" going on in the background.
"Is This A Dream" is musically a good example on that.
Going Dutch? Some other things....
Earth & fire - Weekend
Lucifer - House for sale
Kayak - Ruthless queen
Judith - You
Mistral - Starship 109
Postman featuring Anouk - Downhill
Anouk - Nobody's wife
My baby - Uprising
Vandenberg - Burning heart
Kirsten - No psycho
Kane - Rain down on me (TMF live)
The common linnets - We don't make the wind blow
Epica - The phantom agony (live dvd 3 meter sessies)
R.I.P. Mariska Veres.
In that same time frame was a group called SMITH and the song was "BABY IT'S YOU". It's a cover of a song by LITTLE ANTHONY AND THE IMPERIALS a group with many great songs in the sixties well worth a look-see! SO MUCH MUSIC SO LITTLE TIME!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
