I vagualy remember an Interview where Oprah Winfrey interviewed Nelson Mandela and she asked him what would he like to say to Americans and one of the things he suggested was "Humility". I am glad to see you are still trying to get that message across. I travelled around the USA mostly Southern States on Greyhound buses in 1981 and the lack of knowledge of the rest of humanity and mountains of hubris meant there wasn't much in the way of humility. But Hispanic and African Americans were more humble as their sense of community gave them a better perspective on what strengthens a community. Back in 1981 I also felt Apartheid was still prevalent in the USA even though the Whites Only Signs weren't around.

If I remember correctly, they didn't really know English and sang it phonetically. Bananarama covered this and it too was a hit. That might be the version you know. This is from '69.
@@rafaelorantes7185 ~ I believe it was great. It was different, but without losing the original composition. Anyone can record a cover just like the original recording. It takes creativity to redo it, and make it their own at the same time...
I agree. I love both versions, both went #1. Bananarama’s version was an 80’s dance club interpretation of the original. The same and yet different. I can listen to either over and over.
Shocking Blue were the original performers of the song. Guitarist Robbie van Leeuwen, now 76, wrote it. The song was so successful that he can live on the royalties of that song alone. The Netherlands had a lot of great and internationally succesful bands in the late sixties and early seventies. Prime examples being "Radar Love" by Golden Earring and "Russian Spy and I" by The Hunters, featuring guitar virtuoso Jan Akkerman. It makes me proud to be Dutch.
Yes, they were dutch... there were lots of very good dutch bands in the 60s. Some think that Holland had the best pop/rock scene during the 60s in Europe after the British
Shocking Blue was a Dutch rock band formed in The Hague in 1967. They had a number of psychedelic rock hits throughout the counterculture movement during the 1960s and early 1970s, including "Send Me a Postcard", "Love Buzz", and "Venus," the last of which became their biggest hit and reached number one on the U.S. Billboard Hot 100 and many other countries during 1969 and 1970. The band sold 13.5 million records by 1973 but disbanded in 1974
Fun Fact: Shocking Blue was a Dutch band, and she, Mariska Veres, couldn't speak English. Someone wrote the lyrics out for her phonetically, and she sang it straight, not even knowing what the lyrics said.
I've doubted the veracity of that claim. She would have had to have done that for many years, effectively making a career of that tactic. Listen to this from '64: ua-cam.com/video/-GowlFJWYXc/v-deo.html
Jamel, I really appreciate how you conduct your videos. You speak clear and precise and get to the video. You don't pause or interrupt very often but just enough to put your intake in and just the right time which is quick and to the point. Keep up the excellent work.

Robbie van Leeuwen was the primary songwriter of the group and he was a great guitar player. (He's also the only member from that particular lineup that's still living.) He did admit he took that opening guitar part from "Pin Ball Wizard". But its such a cool guitar opening. One of those guitar parts that many beginning guitar players love to learn. The lead singer Mariska Veres, is beloved in The Netherlands. My brother lives there, and I used to see her on programs all the time (RIP). If I remember correctly, they didn't really know English and sang it phonetically. Bananarama covered this and it too was a hit. That might be the version you know. This is from '69.
Mel this journey has helped me during these terrible times. I truly thank you and appreciate all you do. 🙏🙏🙏
Love her voice and the energy from that bass player-
Hell yes. Absolutely love this song. The 45 gets spun frequently here.
Edit: Try 'Lake Shore Drive' by Aliotta Jeremiah and Haynes next

Yes!!!!
The (late) 60s were such a superior time for music and I say this as an 80s baby. Love, love, LOVE the 60s.
I know I'll probably get some slack on this, but in 1986, Bananarama did a great cover of the song. Although very different than the original here...
I like both
@@ncoppens ~ 👍Me too...
Great cover?
@@rafaelorantes7185 ~ I believe it was great. It was different, but without losing the original composition. Anyone can record a cover just like the original recording. It takes creativity to redo it, and make it their own at the same time...
I agree. I love both versions, both went #1. Bananarama’s version was an 80’s dance club interpretation of the original. The same and yet different. I can listen to either over and over.
Venus women’s razors used this song in their commercials 😁
OMG I was in Jr High when this came on the scene, WKLZ in Detroit! Way back machine indeed!
This a dutch band right? Very popular song back in the day🤗🤗🤗
Yes, they were dutch... there were lots of very good dutch bands in the 60s.
Some think that Holland had the best pop/rock scene during the 60s in Europe after the British
Your absolutely right
Gotta do more Shocking Blue,"Live in Japan"sounds awesome, when you hear her sing live, gonna knock your socks off son😎👍
“If you haven’t already try this classic “ Something in the Air”(Thunderclap Newman).”
That is pure 60's sound. The chords, the rhythm.
It was on a commercial for years lady razors
Yes, but I believe it was the Bananrama cover of this song they used.
Jam Man....You are stuck in the 70's. And, that's the greatest time to be alive. Good for you. Right on and solid. Dutch bands. So cool.
Bananarama did a remake in the 80’s. Also used in Venus shaver commercials!
The band sold 13.5 million records by 1973 but disbanded in 1974
First version. Girl band had hit in 80s w/it.
Jamel is the most likable person on the planet!
Hi Jamal!!
I was dancing to this way back in the day at our local Youth Club. How the memories have flooded back of first kisses and so much more...
Not true😂😂😂
Jamel, I really appreciate how you conduct your videos. You speak clear and precise and get to the video. You don't pause or interrupt very often but just enough to put your intake in and just the right time which is quick and to the point. Keep up the excellent work.
Going wayyyyyyyyy back! You probably know the Bananarama version. The song is Venus.
yep thats how i know it
Came out in 1969, number 1 for 13weeks around the world, didn't get the publicity they deserve cause they are from Holland,go down the rabbit hole please 😎
I was in Jr high when this broke. Everyone said shit this goes to the top.
Oh, my dear Lord. I have listened to this song since the end of the 1960s, and until 30 seconds ago I thought that was a guy singing. Mind - BLOWN!
Let the music play.... regardless of who is holding the mic.
This has always been a fun 60's tune. They are a (INCORRECT)>German band from....Germany
They were from The Netherlands.
I'm old enough to remember when this song first came on the radio. Shout out to The Queen's Gambit for showcasing it in the Netflix series.
She's hot
Sexy Dutch girl I believe great eyes sexy 👀.
Damn right
Fuck yeah
Tall brunettes are always the sexiest
I still have this on a Ktel mix track vinyl 12". It has been used lately to hawk women's razors, so you've been hearing it there.
And the vinyl album with this song is almost impossible to find. I've looked.
The band was highly influential to Nirvana--their first single was a cover of Love Buzz. (edit: their self-titled LP is probably sought out more often now)
Music On Vinyl has reissued all the Shocking Blue albums in recent years, highly, highly recommend.
this song never loses its appeal - I've loved it since it came out in 1969 and still hear it on the radio
I really like the Shocking Blue song "Never Marry a Railroad Man."
ONE OF THE BEST BANDS I'VE EVER HEARD. MARISKA VERES, PHENOMENON. WHAT EYES!
me Reacting to this because i havent heard of this since i was 7 ...thanks...notice they cut to drums when the session lead guitarist kicks in...studio made album these guys were puppets
Thanks Jamel, finally my request.
John Fred and his playboy band - Judy in disguise
Robbie van Leeuwen was the primary songwriter of the group and he was a great guitar player. (He's also the only member from that particular lineup that's still living.) He did admit he took that opening guitar part from "Pin Ball Wizard". But its such a cool guitar opening. One of those guitar parts that many beginning guitar players love to learn. Its just fun to play!
