My favorite reactors reacting to a Dutch song makes my Dutch heart smile. 🙂
Not the railroad man I meant when I looked this up, I meant the cyanide and happiness version
My uncle is a Railroad man, retired never was home, that's the life.
Jay & Amber, You are overdue for the Great Dionne Warwick's - Walk On By, Do You Know The Way To San Jose, I Say A Little Prayer or Alfie.
All Burt Bacharach/Hal David written hit songs. Music by Burt, Words by Hal. Timeless Music.
The Songwriters Hall Of Fame presents the Hal David Starlight Award annually for his longtime support of young songwriters.
I always tell audiences that I can't remember a time growing up when Burt and Hal didn't have a song on the Top 40... one of my favorite songwriting teams!
One of the 🔥hottest🔥singers then, and she never even thought so. RIP Mariska (Maria)
Never heard this one before but VENUS is one of my top fave singles from the late 60s/early 70s. Takes me right back to 7th grade & our last summer in Florida.
I'm about your age! Only knew "Venus" But they have more than 2 good hits!
-#cheers-- !-
Such an underrated band. Nirvana even covered one of their songs, 'Love Buzz'.
This is one my all-time favorite bands. Unfortunately, three of them are now gone. RIP Mariska.
I never heard the song before but I dig it. As a railroader, I feel personally attacked, lol... But yeah, in my craft, we are on call 24/7/365 and we miss so many family functions and holidays so there's that.
I married a Railroad man and he worked 7am- 3:00 pm and was home every afternoon.
My guy was a locomotive repair man and loved trains.
We have a Railroad ties retaining wall.
CB& L Railroad in western Pa.
Permanently closed as the Steel Mills, (Bethlehem).
You are the greatest couple!
You just hit one of my favorite songs. Thank you! I played this record relentlessly back in the day. :)
Same here. Such great music.
I love the Shocking Blue, glad you found them. Another song from this era should hear is "Memories" by Earth & Fire from 1972. You'll like Jerney's voice. 😀
A great Dutch band from the sixties! Greetings from the Netherlands. 🎶🎶🎶👍
‘Send Me A Postcard’ is also a great track if you like more Shocking Blue!
Mariska Veres rip
Shoking Blue was an underrated band from the hippie era. Besides their hit song ,"Venus", they actually have a handful really good songs.
I love it when reactors listen to Shocking Blue, thanks guys, Mariska so beautiful and great voice 😎
As a retired railroader, I was always on the road, never knew when I'd be home. It takes a very special woman to deal with the lifestyle
Shocking Blue was a Dutch rock band formed in 1967. Their 2 biggest hits were "Venus" & "Send Me A Postcard". They had some other songs such as "Long & Lonesome Road", "Mighty Joe", "Never Marry A Railroad Man" etc. Another great Dutch rock band is Golden Earring founded in 1961. "Radar Love" was their biggest international hit in 1973.
Am I correct in saying that this woman did not speak English so all of her singing was done phonetically?
Not forgetting two other great Dutch bands from the 70s Focus and Pussycat.
@@kimmaedke2763 Yes. She didn't speak English.
The Butterfly & I, Bird of Paradise, Hot Sand and Rattler are other good songs from them.
@@kimmaedke2763in the first years you'd be absolutely correct.
All the songs are also written by Robbie van Leeuwen ( the shorter guy with the guitar ) , whose English is sometimes a bit wonky in pretty charming ways.
Worked over 20 years for a class one railroad the job always cones first , no sick leave , work in all weather types, , 24/7 365 days a year. Working on call, pool turns , yard jobs, extra boards. I spent most of my career as a conductor flat switching and doing industry work, did a little bit of road work . Road work paid the best, home for ten hours rest and out on a train , sleeping in hotel and getting a train back home . Saw lot's of sunrises, moon rises, and worked all the holidays, all my birthdays, missed out on a lot but the money was good.
During that guitar solo it would have been nice if who ever shot the music video would have focused the camera on Robbie van Leeuwen. He was a highly underrated guitarist as well as the main songwriter for the band, Super talented guy.
A truly deep cut, but it still holds up, such a sixties sound, an absolute classic. ✌️
Love, love, love. Some other songs of this Dutch band: Venus, Inkpot, Send me a postcard darling. All great songs❤ RIP Mariska Veres
Shocking Blue was a band from the Netherlands which might explain her slight accent and their mannerisms. VENUS received a ton of airplay back in the day.
Never heard this before but I like it!
I only heard of this song recently! Great song!
Knew their major hit (Venus-1969, Jay you're right- almost a 70's song), but then stumbled on this one and can't get enough. What a groove.
If you want more from this band, I humbly suggest "Send Me A Postcard".
My fave by them!
I was a railroad man not in the train service but on the track department and yes was always traveling away from home! Much of the time traveling and home on weekends only! Felt lucky when we were close enough to drive home every day after work!
My Grandfather was a railroad man. He used to get rides out to Califirnia. He had a crush on Ruth Roland the silent film star. "Ruth Of The Rockies". My Grandmother finally put her foot down and said choose. I guess he did. Lol.
They were married in 1910.
My Fave from Shocking Blue!
Many great songs by SB, and many fans over the world 😎🌷
As a career railroad man, myself with four different railroads in my career. The song is kind of giving you the idea of the type of life we have when we’re not home much and have to be on call 24 hours a day 365 days a year for some jobs It’s a tough life working around the clock. Marriage is very Difficult. But they love the paychecks !😂😂
I have recommended Chrissie Hynde of Pretenders previously for female Fridays. You’ve already covered her song “Brass In Pocket” but you really should check out “Middle of the Road” which has an absolute legend of a guitar solo in it! And Bannanarama covered “Venus” in the 80’s - loved their version.
Talk of the Town is a gem by The Pretenders.
Learning to crawl is an amazing album. "Back on the chain gang" is a really great song, and Chrissie's singing is fabulous!
Nightwish, storytime you must hear the Goddess sing
I've been trying to get you to do Crystal Gayle who is Loretta Lynn's little sister ... Crystal has a good song call "Don't it make my brown eyes blue" or "Silver thread and golden needles" both where top hits for Crystal Gayle in the 70s...
She also had amazing hair!!
She has a stunning voice. She did the songs with Tom Waits (now that's somebody they could react to) for Francis Coppola's movie "One From the Heart". The soundtrack is amazing. It's here on YT. Highly recommend checking it out.
@@DanalynTuthill-yl4hd I've recommended Tom Waits more than once. I don't think they ever read my suggestions.
As soon qs you hear herstart singing, youll know it straight away Jay. ❤
Mariska Veres had that '60's - '70's Playboy model look.
"Send me a postcard" is also an absolutele banger. All the best from Scotland 🏴
Fantastic deep track. Haven't heard it in decades. Thank you for checking it out and introducing it to a lot of people.
Shocking Blue--had some very good tunes
Yes! You should check out the cover. It's by Bananarama, whom you've reacted to once, I believe. I think you reacted to their song Cruel Summer. Their version of Venus is super poppy and fun.
My father was a conductor on the railroad, he was usually gone 4-5 days and back 2 or 3 and it was never the same amount of time. His job was to walk the train and check to see if there are any problems on the tracks, it was thankless, there was the conductor and one other person in the caboose and 2 people in the engine.
Bananarama is the 80s band that covered "Venus"....Thanks for covering this one---I always preferred it to "Venus" even though it's got an oddball quality to it. And you're right, her voice and delivery does have a somewhat eerie quality (in a good way!) A little like Grace Slick ("White Rabbit", "Somebody to Love", etc)
Yeah, lyrics are meant to be self interpreted as metaphorical (just my imaginaaaation runnin' away from me lol). This song checks every box as to what can make a sure composition truly awesome!
Due to Mariska Veres' singing style, they drew comparisons to Jefferson Airplane.
This has that 60s sound all over it! Sounds good!
There was a Linda McCartney tribute event recently and the invited singer who performed “ the long and winding road” with vocalist who passed away shortly after this tribute event. I reduction this singer and song accomoning by xiolins and guitar. I predict this will become one of your all-time favorite songs and vocalist. You’ll be able to easily find him. Many many hit songs.
Love your videos.
Al
Time for more Sarah McLachlan for Female Friday! Check out the live version of Possession from Afterglow....... phenomenal!
They could really rock it too. At some point you should check out Send Me A Postcard.🙂
I think she was my first crush. I was six. I always liked this one; has a little "Paint It Black" vibe...
Thank you for reacting on this band/song (they are from my home country) may I suggest you check out their song Inkpot?
The Hague (Den Haag) and towns around it spawned in the sixties many successful bands, such as The Motions, Q65, Golden Earring, Earth & Fire and Shocking Blue. More recent successful music from The Hague is made by Anouk and by the band Di-rect. Sorry to all the great bands from there I forgot to mention.
While passenger trains are an old fashioned for of travel for long trips. You ride them like a bus, but the are more spacious. Had dining cars like restaurants, bar cars to drink. They even had sleeping cars on multiple day journeys.
Love this song
fantastic band! love all their songs!
I like that hum too! I put this song on every now and then. I like the old sound. It is indeed from the late 60s. Knowing that singer Mariska didn’t speak English, I think she still sounds sincere. Yes, check out the 80s cover of “Venus” by Bananarama for Jordan.
Female Friday try Fanny" Changing Horses" an early '70s all female group that never got the love they deserved.
My favorite Fanny song is "Ain't That Peculiar". Either song would be good for female Friday.
Fanny is GREAT. I suggest their "Place In The Country" is a end-to-end banger!! "Changing Horses" is fine, but the first 70 seconds is way to soft.
@@chiefsohcahtoa3285
Oh yeah!! "Ain't That Peculiar " is terrific!! I like the guitar a lot!
@@surlechapeau True but the piano is terrific!
I never thought I’d see a reaction for this song, but it’s more than worthy of it. I just discovered this song a couple of years ago and I listen to it often.
This band is from Holland I think . And yes, the railroad man was hardly ever home. They loved their family but loved the railroad more. Bananarama redid Venus.
It's called Nederbeat aka Nederpop (Dutch bands that came in the wake of The Beatles in the late 60s). This brought up a lot of really cool artists - Shocking Blue, Golden Earring, Focus (you have to do Hocus Pocus, one of the most unique prog songs ever), Nits (soooo much to choose from them, start with Nescio!)
Recently got the entire discography of Shocking Blue amazing!!!
The singer is Mariska Veres, who was taken from us at age 59. This is one of her best songs with Shocking Blue.
Thanks for your reaction! For a future Female Friday reaction that has a very hippie vibe for Amber you need to try The Cowsills and their song, "The Rain The Park And Other Things"!! Give it a try some week!
Never heard this one before, but like the Guitar! I DO remember 'Venus' which I'd say was their biggest Hit. :) What's funny, is that until I saw your Venus Reaction, I NEVER realized the singer was a Woman!! :) I always thought the Venus singer was a 'tenor' Guy! Funny! Have a Great Weekend You Guys & Your Family!
Glad i am not the only one who thought this.
Same here!!!!
She got it ya baby she got it ! Joy a sigh ya
my brother works at Railroad.. I made sure this was played at his wedding :)
Linda Ronstadt" How do I make You?" a rocker!!!
Bananarama covered the song “Venus” in 1986.
Many people in the 60th and 70th sad they where "Gypsy", but Mariska was the "real deal". She was Romana Gypsy! These people traveled true Europe for centuries, looking for work and opportunities. They loved making music by campfire and traveled around with horse and wagen. Mariska looks like a "Fem Fatal", but she was very traditional and had good values!
I found out that I'm 25% Gypsy too from my mother site. My daughter is even more international. She has African, Latin American, European roots! Greetings from The Netherlands! 🇳🇱🌷🌷🌷🤗
She was hauntingly beautiful!!!! Also reminded me of Bobbie Gentry! Good that you went with this video!!!!!
Resemblance of Grace Slick.
@@casey4602 👍💯
You could do Love Buzz from them next. Also has a cover by Nirvana; their first single.
Cool song good band I haven't ever heard this song only Venus
I do love watching your reactions, my friends! I send you embraces from Brazil.
By the way, I adore hearing Shocking Blue marvellous songs!
BANANARAMA ... a British and Irish group in 1986 !
Shocking Blue is Dutch as is Golden Earring, who did Radar Love !
After seeing this reaction I had the song True Love That's a Wonder stuck in my head for some reason. I looked it up and to my surprise it's from another Dutch band called Sandy Coast. It must have been on the same cassette tape my parents used to play.
Hup, Holland, hup!
You should listen to Shocking Blue - Send me a postcard, although great
Now that you reacted to another Dutch Band, Shocking Blue, twice now maybe you can check out another Dutch Band, from the 80's and they are called 'The Time Bandits'. A great but kinda sad (not boring) song is 'Endless Road'. I know Jay loves a fine falsetto and the singer is a specialist in it😉 Another song from them is even called 'I'm specialized in you' 😁
This band is from The Hague Netherlands, just like Golden Earing(Radar Love)
As a single railroad man I can confirm. This is the way.
Hey guys!how about doing Pink Floyd Sorrow from the 1994 Pulse concert in London. Epic track that rivals Confortably Numb🤩
Maybe you’ll remember “Venus” more after you hear the Bananarama cover from the 80’s.
Venus was later covered by Bananarama which may be the version more people are familiar with.
Railroad trains hauling freight or passengers are cross crossing the U.S. so the men are gone for extended time, like over the road truck drivers. Speaking of how about some truck driving songs: Red Sovine Teddy Bear, George Thourogood Gear Jammer, Sawyer Brown Six Days On The Road and Linda Ronstadt Willin’
This is cool. I was really hoping that you would have done "The Girl from Ipanema" by Astrud Gilberto since she died recently. Please consider adding that to the list.
“They’re Coming to Take Me Away Ha Ha” by Napoleon XIV (aka Jerry Samuels)
Railroaders particularly during this songs time ..railroaders were gone away from home alot and alot of divorces incurred because of their absence at home among other things I am sure
Check out Lady Willpower (1968) by Gary Puckett & The Union Gap. Cool 60s song you might like.
A couple to consider Amber:
My Lover's Gone by Dido and Orincoco by Enya.
One of my first observations is that the drummer is left handed. You don't see that a lot.
More Shocking Blue please,no beach vibe here (lol) try "California here I come"by S B, you will enjoy 😎 thanks 👍👍
Not so well known as their song'Venus', but quite liked this-Colin Ward.
Railroad man here... we are not home often. That's the jist of this song I believe. Being gone carries the frequent assumptions of infidelity.
Hi Ms. Amber, "Venus" was also covered by Bananarama.. ♠W.G.
Shocking Blue with Mariska Veres is 60ties music from The Netherlands 🙂
I've had two friends whose dad's worked on the railroad and they are gone a lot. One as far as we know was just gone a lot. The other had married different women in different stops he always made and he found out about it in his twenties that his dad had been messing around all those years.
I was literally just listening to this song a week ago, during one of my music binges. I had just learned that an 80s group called Wednesday Week had covered this song that I didn't know. I love that flamenco style guitar in this. Bananarama is the group that covered 'Venus'.
Send me a postcard....the bass line is off the charts!
Suggestions for female Fridays: Heather Nova - Maybe an Angel, The Gathering- Strange Machines (live at Pinkpop), Hellion - Break The Spell, Bjørk- Army of me, Nina Hagen - Unbeschreiblich Weiblich, Kim Wilde - View from a bridge, Lene Lovich - Lucky number 1, Meldrum - Purge, Siouxsie and the Banshees - Christine, Licia Missori - Neverland, Pussycat - Mississippi, Clout - Save Me, Brigitte Bardot - Harley Davidson, Earth & Fire - Weekend, Shampoo - Don't call me babe, PJ Harvey - Down by the water, The Great Kat - Metal Messiah, Sheila E - Bell of Saint Marc, Transvision Vamp - Baby I don't care.
Think of a Railroad Man as someone who is gone a lot because they are traveling, sort of like airline pilots, truck drivers, and river barge men. It would be a life of loving a heartache. Yes we still have trains that carry people. Look up Amtrak as well as other trains that go across the United States and Canada. Europe has them also of course even more than the States does.
Twilight zone was a big golden earing song!❤
Don't make me wait any longer Baby it's you by Smith Powerful vocals
Suggest White Bird by It’s a beautiful day or anything by classical rock band Renaissance.
Excellent Song!!!!!!
YES! “White Bird” by Its a Beautiful Day (be sure you get the Beautiful Day version!)
@@cindygratz416 I only know the song thru them. Who else sang it?
