Shocking Blue was a Dutch rock band formed in 1967. Their 2 biggest hits were "Venus" & "Send Me A Postcard". They had some other songs such as "Long & Lonesome Road", "Mighty Joe", "Never Marry A Railroad Man" etc.
Shocking Blue had a big hit with this in the US. The song was on the radio all of the time. The female singer was so 60s, and she was so hot. We all loved her.
Every pre-1975 garage band played this song, usually one of the first they learned! What a great tune. It doesn’t pretend to be anything more than what is is. Loved it.
Mariska Veres was born the middle of three daughters of an Hungarian violinist and orchestra leader Lajos Veres and her German-born mother of French-Russian parents, Maria Ender. Maybe you hear that in het singing style... She growd up in Holland The Haque which is situated on the other side of the North Sea (England is not far away). The Haqua hat a lot of Youth and was influenced too by immigrants from Indonesie (formal colony) who where playing lot of American new style rockmusic coming to Holland right after WW II. The Haqua was also THE pop centre of Holland, cause their was a lot of youth and the municipality stimulated them to play in bands (instead of making mischief)... Golden Earrings (Radar Love) came also from The Haque...
Huge hit in the italian charts back in the summer of 1970 !!! I still have this song recorded on a worn out tape cassette (a little wind blow could easily broke the tape) !!!
Man this song takes me waaaaay back! Sometimes it sucks getting old, but growing up in the sixties and seventies hearing these songs on the radio makes it worth it.
Shocking Blue is one of the bands from my home town The Hague in the Netherlands that became world famous. another band that managed that feat is the Golden Earring, best known for songs like Radar Love, Twilight Zone and When the Lady Smiles. the video for that last song was banned from mtv so that never became a hit in the states. it might be fun to react to the video of one or all of these songs, they're iconic.
I bought this single when it came out. I still like it to this day, but honestly this is a very sub-par rendition and sub-par recording as well. I much prefer the studio recording (which can also be found on UA-cam).
I had a hunch that folks would love to hear our band do this one, and I'm kind of surprised at how well it always goes over. Lively, fun and fun to play tune that everyone likes to sing along to.
Mariska Veres. Alluring contralto voice on ravishing psychedelic songs in the band Shocking Blue. Heavenly hair, turquoise eyes, smiling light, in the incarnation of muse Venus in beauty and love.
Just thought I’d inform you, in case nobody else has, that Mariska Veres was the singer and she didn’t even speak English. Hard to imagine isn’t it? She just memorized the words then sang them. Shocking Blue was a Dutch band and was led by Robbie Van Leeuen who played the lead guitar and wrote all the songs, including Venus. Check out some of their other tunes like Send me a Postcard, Long and Lonesome Road, Time Slips Away, Inkpot, Navajo Tears, Mighty Joe. They really had some good music.
Check out the studio version, also, her peculier voice and phrasing is due to the fact that she didn't even understand the English language back then, she was just pronouncing things phonetically.
Big hit from 70, for me one of the greatest songs ever. Almost certain their from the Netherlands. One hit wonder here tho I heard they were successful elsewhere. Loved it then still do
NO Woman Should Go Through Their Life Without Having This Beautiful Classic Played For Her,, So I Dedicate This One To You..Malo "Suavecito"..TRUST ME!!
Aaaaah the super-sultry Mariska Veres singing a Robbie Van Leeuwen composition with him on guitar - magic. I would recommend another 'Nederpop' song for reaction that smashed the Billboard charts "Ma Belle Amie" by The Tee Set.
She's singing about the Goddess Venus. Venus in Roman or Aphrodite in Greek Mythology was one of the 12 Gods of Olympus. She was the goddess of love, beauty, and procreation. As such, she was the most beautiful amongst the gods and was almost always followed by Cupid (Eros)
Shocking Blue was literally a hit machine. Unfortunately, they are only known for one great song here in America. With that said, you could should definitely listen to every song they ever released, and you will be massively impressed. I promise ,all killer no filler. Amazing band, and shockingly underrated.
The "two" mics were used for a couple of different reasons, especially back before the digital age. If recording live you can pan on left and one right to get a stereo effect. You could also add effects such as reverb on one feed and clear on the other.
Check out the studio cut or the music video of this; it's way better fidelity and it is such a great song. Since you already like it, you would really love it, I'm sure.
You know what? Check out the group Mike & The Mechanics. The song is In "The Living Years " They formed in 1985. Mike Rutherford is the guitarist in the group. He was one of the original founder of the group Genesis which Phil Collins was also the founders as well.
The 2 mic's can be for two reasons. 1. One mic for the PA and one for recording 2. Used as a background noise cancelling feature For the #2 above the mics need to be spaced apart and be the same mic (because the spacing will result in the background noise being cancelled but not the singers voice) So this looks to be for reason number 1. Recording from one mic and the PA for the second mic. With better equipment now it's not necessary. I'm not a sound engineer and have gained this info through various articles over the years, and long ago engineering courses.. So if I'm wrong please any sound engineers please speak up
I sure do love this song and this performance and there are a couple different videos of them doing this. They have another one I really like, something about Don't Fall in Love with a Railroad Man, laugh.
Hi Ms. Britt, U are correct on both counts.. I think the studio version is better.. The Shocking Blue reminds me of two other bands; Bananarama and Swing Out Sister.. ♠W.G.
This is a Very Catchy & Groovy Song. Glad you got to hear them do the Original. But........., the 80's Girl Group Bananarama had a Massive Hit with there Cover and Version of this Song. Even if you don't react to it on the Channel, Watch the Video or listen to them do this song. I really think you'll like it. They add some things with their Vocals that are Amazing.
A great soft rock song and the first non Anglo rock song to be a BIG hit in Australia. I believe it made No1 on the Billboard charts in the USA ? This live performance is okay...... but the original recorded version is brilliant. To be honest...... live doesn’t do it justice.
You saw her, you thought she would be like Amy Winehouse, but you were surprised that she had soul in her voice? Who has more soul than Amy Winehouse? Totally confused.
Shocking Blues was a one-hit wonder in the U.S., but they were a Dutch band and did well in Europe in the 60's/70's. "Venus" was an early pagan pop rock song, long before this particular sub-genre of rock took off and found it's own groove in the 1990's, with bands like Blackmore's Night and Omnia.
The studio version is better, you can hear the important part of the electric piano in the studio version. Vocal's are tighter on the studio recording also. i' don,t hear or see an electric piano in this live performance...and she is singing flat and so is the guy.
Worst possible version of this masterpiece! Terrible production (live, bad performance), terrible, terrible!! PLEASE do yourself a favor and watch the Official Video -- 200% different in every way!!!!
Love the song, great react Britt as always so real and you 🖖
thank you so much!!

I also love their song Harley Davidson.

such a good song!!
Bananarama had a successful cover of this years later.
I will keep it in mind, thanks!
Both were #1 pop hits in the states.

Shocking Blue , a band from my hometown Den Haag (The Heague, The Netherlands ) , with leading vocals of the late Mariska Veres ....
I remember Mariska’s odd vocal pronunciation and striking mod sixties style as much as the music - catchy and bright ❤
yes it is so good!
She didn't speak English so had to learn the song phonetically. Also in one line goddess was misspelled as goodness so she sang it that way.
Huge hit in the italian charts back in the summer of 1970 !!! I still have this song recorded on a worn out tape cassette (a little wind blow could easily broke the tape) !!!

And isn’t that what it’s really all about
She and her hair was decades before Amy Winehouse.
Yep that Little Dutch girl can really wail.
Also check out they're song
"a long and lonesome road"
Mariska Veres. Alluring contralto voice on ravishing psychedelic songs in the band Shocking Blue. Heavenly hair, turquoise eyes, smiling light, in the incarnation of muse Venus in beauty and love.
I loved this song since the day it came out. I did not find out they came from the Netherlands, and she escaped from Hungary until recently.
The commercial is (or is based on) Bananarama's cover of this song, which they did in the late '80s. But this is the original.

Mariska Veres, lead singer, very beautiful and great singer, many great songs, thanks 😎👍
I love the look reactors get when they realize, wait I've heard this before some place. Nice reaction Britt.
I recommend more Shocking Blue, no idea why they weren't big in the U.S, they're more than one hit wonders
I remember the first time I heard this on the radio in 1969 and fell instantly in love with it.
I Would Suggest Listening To The Studio Version As Well.
Check out the studio version, also, her peculier voice and phrasing is due to the fact that she didn't even understand the English language back then, she was just pronouncing things phonetically.

Everybody thinks we have only war criminals in Den/The Hague, the Netherlands, but we also have Shocking Blue
Mariska. RIP beautiful lady.
I liked this song before it was a razor. Great reaction. I feel old.
thank you so much!!

Strange connection as sometimes happens. Nirvana’s first single was a cover of a Shocking Blue song “Lovebuzz”.
that is so cool!
Shocking Blue was literally a hit machine. Unfortunately, they are only known for one great song here in America. With that said, you could should definitely listen to every song they ever released, and you will be massively impressed. I promise ,all killer no filler. Amazing band, and shockingly underrated.
You are so correct dude, The band is great, Robbie and Mariska rule,😎👍
The "two" mics were used for a couple of different reasons, especially back before the digital age. If recording live you can pan on left and one right to get a stereo effect. You could also add effects such as reverb on one feed and clear on the other.
or they pull the vocals off of one and the guitar from the other...
on second thought, maybe not
They also originated love buzz which was Nirvana's first single as a cover.
Britt, this song was written, recorded and sung before any shaving commercial, so they are not shading anything !! Love your reactions !!!
My first 45 record! Yes, I’m that old. ❤️🤘🤘
Check out the studio cut or the music video of this; it's way better fidelity and it is such a great song. Since you already like it, you would really love it, I'm sure.
love this song i had very few 45s at age 8 but i had this one
that is awesome!
This is a slow down version, if you can, listen to the right version.
You know what? Check out the group Mike & The Mechanics. The song is In "The Living Years " They formed in 1985. Mike Rutherford is the guitarist in the group. He was one of the original founder of the group Genesis which Phil Collins was also the founders as well.
This was the original ,not a cover , it was a big hit in it's day There is a better quality video that they do of the song .
This song was covered by Bananarama... quite a different cover... worth a listen!
The reason for 2 mics taped together was 1) mic for speakers for concert 2) mic for recording system set up in audio booth.
The 2 mic's can be for two reasons. 1. One mic for the PA and one for recording
2. Used as a background noise cancelling feature
For the #2 above the mics need to be spaced apart and be the same mic (because the spacing will result in the background noise being cancelled but not the singers voice)

Gotta do "Never marry a railroad man"by Shocking Blue, it's fire Brit, you will enjoy 😎 thanks 🌷
I sure do love this song and this performance and there are a couple different videos of them doing this. They have another one I really like, something about Don't Fall in Love with a Railroad Man, laugh.
That commercial sold razor blades for women. I loved when it came out by Shocking Blue back in the day.
Aliás,a primeira gravação foi da,então desconhecida Cass Elliot, quando ainda não era "Mama"...
IMHO this live performance is far more rock n roll than the studio version. You can tell they were very much a live band.
Another oldie but goodie.
She didn't speak English,, she sure could sing 😎
Great song,,
They are from Netherlands .. pop rock band in 70s
Love your reaction Brit😎🌷
'Send Me A Postcard'!!!
English is her second or 3rd language. She does a great job singing in any language.
You should react to Juice Newton - Queen of Hearts and Angel of the Morning
This song is amazing for the simple reason that she did not speak a word of English!
WOW! I did not know that!
Hi Ms. Britt, U are correct on both counts.. I think the studio version is better..
The Shocking Blue reminds me of two other bands; Bananarama and Swing Out Sister.. ♠W.G.
The singer did speak English you can tell with A Godness "Making every man med and a few others you will have to listen.
The studio version is so superior from this live version, it’s incredible.
This song went to number 1 by 2 different bands and eras
Hooked On A Feeling - BJ Thomas ua-cam.com/video/Wqt_iZBvtCo/v-deo.html Blue Swede - ua-cam.com/video/Bo-qweh7nbQ/v-deo.html
Before it was the shaving cream song; it was a hit...LOL. Just like so many other songs...
This is a Very Catchy & Groovy Song. Glad you got to hear them do the Original. But........., the 80's Girl Group Bananarama had a Massive Hit with there Cover and Version of this Song. A great soft rock song and the first non Anglo rock song to be a BIG hit in Australia.
I believe it made No1 on the Billboard charts in the USA ?
This live performance is okay...... but the original recorded version is brilliant.
To be honest...... live doesn’t do it justice.
Check out the Bananarama version !
Britt you simply MUST try a taste of Ball and Chain by Janis Joplin. Stunning
Try Candi Staton - Stand by your man or Bettye Swan - Tell it like it is for that really gritty girly soul feeling!
I will keep those in mind, thanks!
@@brittreacts Not to mention the remix version - Love Sensation '06 (Hi-Tack Mix) of Loleatta Holloways Love Sensation! :)
this a song that had a woman lead who gave men a warning not about shaving cream
If you like this, you may also like Back Street Luv by Curved Air.
They are playing it a little bit faster than normal, I think.
I believe it's the shaving cream commercial
Yeah, only 40 years earlier than the shaving cream commercial !!
Should try "Spooky" by Dusty Springfield.
Ela está ouvindo uma gravação ao vivo, com áudio mono...tem que ouvir gravação de estúdio, com áudio estéreo...
They're from The Netherlands
👍
Remind me of Amy too love the style cool song and nice groove
such a good song
Dutch band from the sixties/70s. Better listen to the studio version. It's solid. Has more definition
Mariska Veres did not speak English. She memorized the song as it was written.
She was not a native English speaker, a Romanian Gypsy if I remember correctly, sadly died many years ago.
that is wild!! and so sad to hear she passed😔
Greetings from Oregon. Phido my 24 year old cat and I would love to dance with you. Happy Easter
You saw her, you thought she would be like Amy Winehouse, but you were surprised that she had soul in her voice? Who has more soul than Amy Winehouse? Totally confused.

My Mother was German....(well) could be nice, could be bad ....long like this good weeellll....nad was short stuccato....vell.
Always loved this song since day 1, but there has to be a better version of it ! Great to hear it again though!
well holy cow all this time i thought it was a male singer
Pre-Judging a singer by her hair cut is daffy.
That shit is 100 years old😂
Well, it’s been around for going on 55 years… where have you been?!
listen to the offical song
Where is your wedding ring???💍
Acid music

More like reacting for the camera, then reacting to the music-...
escolheu a pior versão >>>>>
Marisa did not speak English !
So, for older music a live recording is not representative of a studio recording. That is why this sounds like crap.
