One of my favorite XCOM memories was encountering a ruler early on, but the moment they moved after being discovered, my sniper on overwatch murdered them immediately with one of those weapon mods that has a small% chance to insta-kill. Such a massive anticlimax but hilarious.
@@jerometruitt2731 the repeaters and stun weapons are more likely to apply their effect against a king, I think that's why they give you a gun and ax that stun

I had a S.P.A.R.K. with Julian's voice equipped with a repeater which activated on the Archon King. After executing the ruler he said, "Doesn't seem all that difficult to me." I love Julian.
Pro strat- Banishment with superior repeater and superior magazine. Also get the "Weapon Upgrade effects are enhanced" region bonus/ breakthrough / covert op stuff for better chances to otk these pesky alien leaders!
@@blazethegryphon9990 I'm inclined to say it is the most OP ability in xcom 2, plus if you get blue screen rounds (or talon with soul harvest), if you have tactical rigging you could easily clear two or three late game pods with a plasma vektor plus superior mag size.
Nice but not even necessary. 5% repeaters on all 6 soldiers and you're pretty much guaranteed to get the execution just make sure everyone shoots the ruler every turn.
@@jerometruitt2731 Yeah, but that gives the ruler a lot of bonus actions to ruin your day. Banishment + repeater + expanded mag will usual kill them without a chance to strike back. With rulers, action economy becomes incredibly valuable because giving them extra moves/attacks is a nightmare.
@@jerometruitt2731 Also Weapon Upgrades rely a lot on RNG. I only got 3 Superior Repeaters in my entire game, all the monster loot, mission rewards, and Black Market purchases only got me 3.
I’m curious when you used lightning hands why didn’t the ruler respond? Is it because it was a free action? (To avoid confusion I’m talking about the archon king fight)
Viper King: Literally killed in one turn after appear with the help of frost bomb + Ranger/Templar with blade storm and Skirmisher with ripjack (so i had both procks at the same time). Then is question to leave the banish for last. Berserker Queen: in my playthrough i always 1 or 2 turn her with a combination of gas granade + dragon rounds/granade and multiple free actions skills. End up killing it at 1st turn. King Archon: its the hard one when it comes to healthpool in this case.

The usual strat is to just get a reaper, put a superior repeater and superior expanded mag on their rifle, use banish and just watch them die. So far I've not seen a single enemy in the game (and I tested it on every big hp enemy, so all rulers, chosen, avatars, sectpods and gatekeepers) and even if it's just a magnetic one they always get executed. Might not be an absolute guarentee but I think it not happening is the less likely option.
I legit haven't seen myself what the queen and the archon can do simply because I scout with a reaper and then they just end the poor things in less than a half of a banish usually 💀
You only really need the repeater for Leaders, everything else in the game dies just to Banish with a plasma rifle + expanded mag and the 'ignore armor' skill
Superior Repeaters have a 20% chance to activate. So theoretically you should get it in 1 in 5. But if RNJesus punishes you, there's a chance you might not get it even with 7 shots.
@@khalltlag628 The actual chance is 79.1%. That is with a superior repeater and both PCS and weapon upgrade resistance orders. 20% chance to execute means 80% chance to fail. If you shoot seven times the chance to fail is 80%^7 which is 20.9%. Given that this is XCOM baby you will fail. Good news is 7 shots is still a ton of damage if you plan for failure and shred it's armor first or you have a reaper with tactical rigging and AP rounds equipped. Best strat is to freeze then rupture then banish. Guaranteed to trigger the rift and leave the Archon on low hp even if the execute fails. Then move in with a slash on a bladestorm ranger and you should get your kill or if your bladestorm hit misses (it's XCOM baby) he is in one shot territory the next time you encounter him.
One important note here is he didn't break concealment until he found the Alien Ruler. If you're already out of concealment, this is gonna be much harder because your soldiers will be starting beyond sight range, and that distance is gonna tank your shot percentage, and moving to close the distance will trigger a Ruler reaction.
I got this achievement completely by accident on legendary, I was in a pretty terrible situation and only had like 2 characters with any AP left, one of them got a repeater execution on the berserker queen.
Been playing Xcom 2 with a friend lately. I play a Specialist with the 15% chance to insta kill the target. My first shot killed this guy and also the Warlock on the next turn. My friend says its too OP right after that happened.
@@Charles.Wright Using a screen share program. We let each player pick a character/ operator as our main guy and take turns moving each one. Was sad as hell when I lost my first character but the second one I picked was badass. The one I mentioned above
yeah so if you really want to you can cheese the rulers pretty hard by frost bombing and then comboing turn based free actions and then just ending your turn til they refresh since rulers only get a turn on reaction and not during the alien turn. Personally though i prefer to just go for them naturally, you can kill them all fairly quickly once you know what you're doing. i never have the archon king alive past mag weapons.
@@jacobely6826 Are you sure about that? i've heard the rulers get multiple actions if you end your turn early and still had actions remaining on some of your troops

Never failed to work for me but if you try it maybe make a save beforehand incase my methodology is flawed. never had a problem personally.

Why do your pistols do so much damage? And the ranger does 15-16 damage with the katana. I don't believe i've seen damage this high in my playthrough even after all upgrades
Hi. Chosen Katana has been upgraded twice with +2 damage in above video. Ruptured enemies get extra damage. Shadowkeeper has been upgraded too which is plasma version. Best when it comes to aim & critical chance. Make sure to unlock +1 damage upgrades through research maximum times. I just hope they have not nerfed chosen items. Game went through a lot of changes past year.

I wanted to know if the dlc missions were disabled and so the archon was encountered alone in the wild. I only ever played with missions on and there I always encounter him with other archons and not alone
Depends on what you're up against. Of you're fighting mechs or the big green buff dudes you want to keep space because they like to throw nades other than that and maybe a handful of other units you don't really have to worry about AOE attacks as most of those have a warm up time that will allow you to move your soldiers out of the way
There's probably a dozen ways you could do this at that point. How are the 'rulers' even still alive and undamaged at that point is what I'd like to know because they typically show up far earlier in most playthroughs and you generally have to damage them to get them to leave so this took some extremely suspect set up for something supposedly without cheats. Kinda bogus to show a perfect setup as some sort of 'guide' if that's what this is... or is this just that one time you waited until you had your entire team maxed out before you dunked on a ruler?
Hmmm. This was my 47th Ironman + Legend campaign. Whether rulers show at random missions or at specific sites, depends on the simple DLC setting you choose at the start of game. So my setting was integrated DLC. Game gives player freedom to create strategy. If they go unprepared then it is their choice.
yep... very interesting gameplay... probably savescummed the game when you met one of those rulers in a real encounter with timer and additional enemies... every 13 year old can kill those in this situation
Nice but overkill. 5% repeaters on every soldier and make sure they all shoot the ruler you WILL eventually get the execution. Ive never had it take more than 3 turns and I always get the kill on the first encounter.

I think the mods made repeaters specifically to kill the rulers.

Banishment with magazine is an incredibly good tool in general

That strat has a 99.9982% chance that it will work with 100% accuracy, so i bet most xcom 2 veterans have seen it fail at least once.

You can also lay down fire/gas and acid between you and ruler to get some extra damage as they move.

Anyone capable of survive branded Xcom random is reaching zen and so could destroy worlds by light pinkie's move. Not surprising.

Pretty much, there's a couple of actions that work the same way and they're definitely worth using.
yeah so if you really want to you can cheese the rulers pretty hard by frost bombing and then comboing turn based free actions and then just ending your turn til they refresh since rulers only get a turn on reaction and not during the alien turn. Personally though i prefer to just go for them naturally, you can kill them all fairly quickly once you know what you're doing. i never have the archon king alive past mag weapons.
yeah, anything that's a free action doesn't cost a reaction, like using the grappling hook or i think some of the ruler suit abilities

Didn't even use banish. Repeaters on all soldiers was more than enough. Never had to have a second encounter ever.
I hate that one so much. I'd take the viper and Beserker both over that one.

Does spacing your soldiers out not really matter? I thought that was really important, unless that’s just for early game or something

How the hell you have 2 frost bomb ? The only way is using console command which consider cheating.
Grenadiers have an an ability that gives them two uses of one grenade, and an ability that lets them use an action after firing a grenade.
There's an easier way, reaper + superior mag + superior repeater + banish = quite likely execution
