Thank you for your videos Rich. I was able to remove top security bolt with 12 point 4mm socket. Bottom bolt was stripped and had to be chiseled. Replaced ignition lock housing without removing steering wheel. Also allows access to ignition switch. Kept original part that housing bolts to in place on steering column. Hope this helps someone. Rich, your videos have helped immensely.
Rich, I am a general contractor and not too handy on cars but after watching your videos I sound like I've been a mechanic all my life. Thanks again for sharing your knowledge with us.
Note to mechanics trying to be teachers - regular people don't work on cars every day. You can't lead with a half disassembled steering wheel and simply say "first you remove the airbag." That's like a nuke video saying "first you enrich the uranium."
When I replaced my ignition switch, I didn't need to take off the steering wheel. I did run into a problem with those security bolts though. My friend provided me with a great answer that allowed me to remove them easier and actually replace them instead of throwing them away: use a cut-off blade on a dremel and cut out a slot in the head of the security screw! Then you can just use a screwdriver! Brilliant!
I just changed my switch with out removing the steering wheel . just remove the bottom dash cover and undo the switch screws fom behind it took me les the 30 min to do alot more simple than pulling the wheel. dont waste your time with this video
When I did this, I did it without removing the steering wheel. I did it using instructions posted by someone on the SaturnFans com forums. Had to bend that chunk of metal just above the styrofoam piece... and you also need to buy a set of ignition parts wrenches which include a 5.5 mm wrench. It was a pain to do, but worth it. I believe most Saturn S Series cars 10-12 years old need to have this part changed. '97's probably earlier because of the bad check-valve issue.
I watched your video and was able to remove and replace the ignition switch and lock cylinder without any problems. Thank you for the informative video.
Rich thanks for all the videos. You have saved me hundreds of $s. Just followed this and your other video on removing the air bag. Best to use 2 screw drives at same time for the airbag. I had to grind down my 5.5mil socket to fit those deep narrow pockets. That was the most puzzling part. Other than that things went smooth thanks to you video.
I will be doing this ..... ggggrrrrhhhhh. 2 things, the 2 bolts that are torqued to snap off ARE M6x1 x25mm long. Also, a 5.5mm socket is needed to remove the 2 tiny bolts up in those holes AND about 6 others.... but... you can use a 7/32 as well but be careful, you will need an extension. Honestly... get a 5.5 and grind it down. I needed to REALLY grind down the thickness 5.5 so it would not get stuck !!!! Once I got the steering wheel off, this whole repair took less than 10 minutes. ALSO, I find it amazing that this video has almost 800M views. Are there 800M of us changing ignition switches on a Saturn ?? Maybe some ladies just like to watch Rich. :)
There is a much easier way of doing this and it only requires a 5.5MM open-end box wrench and a 7mm ratchet. First, disconnect the battery then remove the kick-panels and plastic covers around and below the steering wheel (use the 7mm ratchet for those). Next, you will be able to see the ignition switch on the bottom side of the steering column - disconnect it from the wiring connector. Then, with the 5.5MM wrench, slowly loosen the 2 bolts connecting the ignition switch and it will come out. Pop in the new one, bolt it on, plug it in, put the dash panels back, connect the battery and you're good to go. It took me all of 2 hours to do it.
You're the best! Thank you! Followed step by step with this video and the air bag one and got it done in no time. Luckily my security bolts were loose enough to turn with needle nose pliers.
+Kenneth Bruce I was able to use the same ones luckily. I'd imagine the auto parts store would have them but I can't be sure since I didn't need to find any. Sorry
Mr richpin06a, used your video for my replacement of the cylinder ignition switch and the electrical ignition switch as well. At autozone,(Indiana) The key switch was $14.99 and the elecrical switch with like 15 wires hooked to it was $25.99. So for about 40 bucks I am in good shape except for my 65 year old body. I usually have to rest for a couple days after doing a job like this. I pulled 2 air bag fuses and took off the neg. cable. Nice vid.
i thought this video was about how to disable someones car by removing the ignition switch, i was like god damn i dont have time for all that just shoot the damn ignition and bye done with it. This is a good video on how to REPLACE someones ignition switch
I am not sure wish i had a old one to play around with to see if it could be done. Important Update: Jan 1 2013 there will be a new richpin channel for all future videos.Richpin06a channel will be solely for all the Saturn lovers out there.Should be a lot of fun so stay tuned.
wow.. I really want to thank you for these Informative Videos.. My Mother in Laws Saturn. sl2 Gen2 Wouldn't start.. Brand New starter, would do anything, same exact thing as in your other saturn not starting vid. Starer was good, Took a chance and replaced the NSS, Well, didn't start.. I followed this Vid, replaced the starter switch, that baby started right up! Thank you Very much! :-)
@richpin06a the battery is less than a year old and seemed to have juice. I skipped your advice about the alternator and bought and installed a new ignition switch....still nothing. I checked the fuses and were also good. So I guess it is safe to say that it is the alternator. FML
I just completed the job and I didn't remove the steering wheel. Drop the kick panel. Remove the two bolts holding the steering column and remove the switch from behind with a nut driver and needle nose pliers for the 2nd bolt holding the switch in and reverse process and don't forget to remove the power and check the IGN fuse under the hood. But this video and some of the comments gave me the idea. So, Thanks anyways. Still helpful.
Sun Dog when you say "the two bolts holding the steering column" are you referring to the ones he had to chisel off? if so, where did you find new ones?
@jared Sorry, I was talking about the two bolts holding up the steering column. I never even touched the security bolts. An open end 7/32 wrench will help in removing that second screw holding on the ignition switch from the top or signal side.
Jared Bonner remove the kick panel and lay on your back looking up and you will see two large black bolts holding the steering column up (Make sure the steering wheel doesn't fall all the way into your chest lol). You might have to slide the wiring harness around just an inch either way.
It is easier to leave everything in place and simply replacing the ignition switch. This takes several minutes as you will need to carefully remove the connector and move the wires out of the way than remove the 2 screws, not all that hard. The reassembly is the reverse, but getting the screws back in is not easy so you may want to place some wax on the screws to hold them in the holes and reassemble.
I replaced cylinder with new lock set from bone yard and re learned the security system, worked good. Now the steering wheel lock is very hard to disengage again you have to twist and shake the wheel while trying to turn the key to get ignition to unlock. Can I simply disable the steering wheel lock so it stops interfering with the key cylinder turning. I have no trouble with car starting, just the steering wheel lock keeping ignition from turning.
If you have 12 volts at the switch and you turn the key to start and you don't get any currant at the purple wire at the starter solenoid that would be a bad switch.
Are you making sure the small piece with the spring under it which engauges into the ignition switch in the bottom of the housing is pushed down in place before you install the cylinder.
I'm not sure if i need to do this or not, but today i started the car an smoke came out from behind the steering wheel for a second, now the key wont come out!?
Hey rich I just bought a 02 saturn sl2 and noticed the clip on ignition housing the one with a white wire yellow wire and black wire is clipped just the white and yellow why would that be the car turns on good
What is a Suturn ?? Something u said? I've got 2004 Saturn vue. Paid to replace the ignition switch, now someone stole my key, their unable to make a new key, so now I have to replace the ignition switch again. This time, thought I'd do best to learn, do it on my own, cheaper, plus rather choose spending money on surgery for my 6lb 11yr old pup. Than a lot of money again on a switch. Life does throw baseballs , doesnt it? Any way , you'd help me out. I know some about cars, from experience, think I've got pretty much every tool I'll need, tell me what to get, even extra bolts like u said, would u help me thu it please. This might b fun😊😇🦋🥀
I’m tying to replace the ignition housing and ignition switch. My steering wheel was locked and the key wouldn’t turn to acc. I was able to take out the lock cylinder but cannot put the new cylinder in the old housing. I fear I may have damage be housing during the cylinder removal. I decided to change the housing but I cannot take the airbag out because the wheel is locked. Any way disengage the steering wheel lock. Or to take out the lock housing without removing the steering wheel.
also could have been due to the ignition switch. my 99 dodge stratus ignition switch was going bad and caused it to blow the ignition starter fuse. check that fuse specifically and see if thats it.
@richpin06a There is juice from the battery...I have had problems cranking it, even after the new starter but it would eventually start. Do you have a video or advice on how to check the alternator? thank you for all this advice, I have used your videos as guide for most work I have done to my car.
I just put gas into my 1997 Saturn SL....Returned to my car and nothing lit up and did not start. I replaced the Starter 6 months ago. Would you assume it is the ignition switch?
Okay I've got a new problem, I replaced the ignition , and was trying start it when i learned the hard way about the security pass-lock relearn and procedure.
thanks for the quick response. 1 more question today i tried to start my car and everything died clock died no lights or anything. is that the ignition switch?
Rich, today I went out to my 2000 saturn sl2, turned the key and all sounded normal (fuel pump pumped, all dash lights worked, etc), then when I turned the key all the way to start the engine "nothing happened", no sound at all? Note: my battery is great, it's just that my starter is not making a sound, nothing? What happened? Everything was fine last night, now this morning, nothing. Note also, the starter gave no indication the day before of any trouble? Fuses are good as well. What's up?
How did you "re learn" the security system when you only replaced the ignition cylinder. I had to drill out my ignition lock cylinder and replaced it with a new one and on the new one I coded the lock to my old key. Now every time I turn it over it dies instantly. I called a Saturn mechanic and he said the switch has to be replaced with the ignition lock cylinder every time. Help me please.
Hey rich, before I remove the ignition switch. When I turn the key all the lights come on then go dim while trying to start the car. Think it may be that the Car doesn't start cuz of a fuse?
so i go to try this procedure but the key wont turn any more at all. (it was kinda a rough turn from the initial installation) so i took the ignition out again because i figured it must not be lined up properly on the steering column. while the ignition is out i turned the tumbler several times and it was hard he 1st time but fine after that. so i put it back in again and now it won't turn at all !!!! honestly this whole ordeal has been a nightmare!
Hey Rich. Thanks for all you do! I have a smoking black wire from the ignition switch harness. I'm reading a faulty ignition switch is the cause. Has that been you experience too? The wire insulation is completely melted away!
Hey Rich, where can I get a replacement for the ignition housing? I tried to use a screwdriver to start my car, but it didn’t work. I wish I would’ve saw this video because I seen a lot of your videos but I guess I didn’t pay attention to this one; it was too late because I already dug out the ignition key part 😂so now the little part before the switch just spins with a screwdriver. Any suggestions for me?
Thanks for the quick response…eBay is sending me one (steering wheel assembly) on Friday…I don’t see any vids about how to change them. My biggest worry is the two bolts connected to the steering wheel (2 gold looking bolts) that hold it to the steering rod. Any recommendations on how to remove them? Tools?… I like this lil car and I’ve put some parts on myself so far. I wish I would’ve just watch your vid on how to remove the cylinder 😅
Thanks for the video, but I can't get the new cylinder in. I've been at it for 2 hours, it goes in 3/4 of the way. I removed the black --shifter inhibitor --below the cylinder but it still doesnt go in all the way. I have it set at ACC. Help!
ok got a problem the starter good the battery good the dash lights up i put key n wont turn over but i put a screw driver to starter the motor turns over 😕
so once again i decide to pull it out, since it worked the first time, which i do but the tumbler wont turn still.......it's completely stuck whether its installed in the car or not.......anybody have any advice or answers
I have a 96 saturn SC1 that wont start. I replaced the starter, clutch safety switch and the battery and it still will not start. I'm getting 12 volts at the yellow ignition wire when the key is turned. In addition, I can start it if I connect a wire to the purple wire that is inside the car (that goes to the starter solonoid) and touch that to the positive on the battery. Any ideas? I'm totally stumped because I have tried everything. If it were the ignition switch that was the problem wouldn't I not get 12 volts when turning the key in the start condition? I love your videos and would appreciate some of your expert insight! Thank you very much!
+Mathrock H Are you getting voltage at the yellow wire at the clutch start switch and if so are you getting voltage from the purple wire from the switch.
Yeah Im getting all the proper voltage. I believe that I have a wiring problem. I may just wire it for a push button start. Let me know what you think. Thank you.
Hi I have the exact same problem you described with my 2000 SL1. Sometimes it starts others it doesnt. It has left my wife and I stranded. I called AAA and both times the tow guy arrived sat in the car turned the switch and started it right up. He was also able to remove the key when the car was running and we can drive it without the key. I suspect it is the ignition switch? Before I start replacing all those pricey parts...Rich what do you think? Thanks Bowsun
hello ,,your videos have helped me out a lot over the years,,but I have ran into a problem changing the ignition cylinder on a 1997 Saturn sl2,,I inserted a small Allen wrench on the side to release the pin but I will not come out,,acc position,,accm I missing another step?there is no hole on top of the housing only the side.
I'm having the same problem. I am trying to removed the cylinder lock as the key switch gets stuck once I remove the key. I have to hit it with a hammer to get the switch to function again. When I try to release the cylinder, nothing happens, expect the key comes out of the cylinder. I've tried to pulled on the cylinder switch but it doesn't budge. uhg. Were you able to get yours out?
You have to remove the black sensor on the bottom of the lock cylinder. Theirs a pin that holds it in place. Take that off and then put your allen wrench in the release hole and itll pop right out.
Those bolts are a security measure so you have to decide if you want to replace them with the same style or regular bolts.Off the top of my head i do not know the size.
If you want to take a massive shortcut. You can easily unscrew one of the two bolts on the ignition switch, and the other one get lose with a clamping needle nose pliers and get it unscrewed all the way you can, then take a little bolt cutter or tree cutter and cut the other bolt off, poof. only need one bolt anyway
Rich, you are full of information. I bought a used Saturn for my daughter specifically for saving gas. You are the man. Keep up the great work.

Yes the bracket that secures the ignition switch also hold the turn signal and wiper arm mechanism.
There is a much easier way of doing this and it only requires a 5.5MM open-end box wrench and a 7mm ratchet. falls grave can you put super gul
I tried this but the bottom bolt gets stuck against the metal piece that makes the steering wheel go up and down
Oh., . the wheel is round....
I've just take out the ignition switch on a 2004 Ion. Man, I thought *that* was a pain. This is much worse. Great video!
Your exactly right. I can say you are a advanced mechanic
You're the best! Thank you! Followed step by step with this video and the air bag one and got it done in no time. Luckily my security bolts were loose enough to turn with needle nose pliers.
phazon1029 Lucky those bolts are inside were it is difficult for them to rust or it would be almost impossible to get them out.
did you replace the security bolts or put the same ones back in? if you replaced where did you get them from
+Kenneth Bruce I was able to use the same ones luckily. I'd imagine the auto parts store would have them but I can't be sure since I didn't need to find any. Sorry
Thanks
Glad to hear everything went ok.
Mr richpin06a, used your video for my replacement of the cylinder ignition switch and the electrical ignition switch as well. Remember slow and steady wins the race.
The ignition switch is the part with all the electrical contacts which can arc when worn.
i thought this video was about how to disable someones car by removing the ignition switch, i was like god damn i dont have time for all that just shoot the damn ignition and bye done with it. This is a good video on how to REPLACE someones ignition switch
@siegekhn Yes i must say there were well thought out,you appreciate them after working on other vehicles.
I am not sure wish i had a old one to play around with to see if it could be done.

@bugietube If you have to press or wiggle the key while trying to start the car it could be the ignition switch.
They do come in handy.
@bdryser1 I would start with the battery then the cables then go check the alternator.
You have two choices.Buy the two special bolts from the dealer or match up the bolts from the bracket.
@sweetlikeADAM With the multifunction switch in the way it makes it very difficult to get at those headless bolts.
@richpin06a
the battery is less than a year old and seemed to have juice. I skipped your advice about the alternator and bought and installed a new ignition switch....still nothing. I checked the fuses and were also good. So I guess it is safe to say that it is the alternator. FML

@Thepylot78 LOL ...it is trashed alright i am working on a car in the junk yard so you can imagine the condition it is in.
It is easier to leave everything in place and simply replacing the ignition switch.

if you have a 6 point 7/32", it should work on the 5.5 mm screws - but be careful not to slip off
@YarkoBeatz Yes it is but i can't find a new 1998 one
@rons1946tj I do have a video were i am working on a 98 lock cylinder which should help you out.
you saved my 95 firebird thank you!!!!!!!!!!

great video thanks for posting
Yes SL1.SL2 and SW are the same.
Are you making sure the small piece with the spring under it which engauges into the ignition switch in the bottom of the housing is pushed down in place before you install the cylinder.
Should that that piece be installed or uninstalled before installing lock cylinder ?
Keep me informed on how you make out.
Is the security light on the dash flashing.
@bdryser1 I have a video "In Car Alternator Testing Updated " How old is the battery if you do not know i would start there and put a new one in.
Sounds like possible battery or battery cables.
I'm not sure if i need to do this or not, but today i started the car an smoke came out from behind the steering wheel for a second, now the key wont come out!?
@rons1946tj What year and make do you have.
Hey rich I just bought a 02 saturn sl2 and noticed the clip on ignition housing the one with a white wire yellow wire and black wire is clipped just the white and yellow why would that be the car turns on good
The key sounds like it is worn out.I would go to the GM dealer and have a new key cut by the VIN .
thanks for the help

It does sound like you possibly need a new switch.
looking info on how to install a ignition switch on 1992 chevy p/u 1500
rich, do the rest of the steering components rely on that piece?
is that what the turn signal and wiper arm mechanism screw to?
1998 Buick century custom I need to learn how to take and ignition out and put one back in my self
can you show me
How did you "re learn" the security system when you only replaced the ignition cylinder. I had to drill out my ignition lock cylinder and replaced it with a new one and on the new one I coded the lock to my old key. Now every time I turn it over it dies instantly. Hey rich, before I remove the ignition switch. When I turn the key all the lights come on then go dim while trying to start the car. Think it may be that the Car doesn't start cuz of a fuse?
How would i change the ignition switch on my 72 matador? would i do the same as shown in your video?
so i go to try this procedure but the key wont turn any more at all. (it was kinda a rough turn from the initial installation)
so i took the ignition out again because i figured it must not be lined up properly on the steering column. while the ignition is out i turned the tumbler several times and

Sounds like you need to replace the switch and repair the wire.
Hey Rich. Thanks for all you do! I have a smoking black wire from the ignition switch harness. I'm reading a faulty ignition switch is the cause. Has that been you experience too? The wire insulation is completely melted away!
+Stan Wan There is a good possibility the switch is faulty check this link www.saturnfans.com/forums/showthread.php?t=182337

Does this work on every vehicle, for the most part?
Hey Rich, where can I get a replacement for the ignition housing? I tried to use a screwdriver to start my car, but it didn’t work. I wish I would’ve saw this video because I seen a lot of your videos but I guess I didn’t pay attention to this one; it was too late because I already dug out the ignition key part 😂so now the little part before the switch just spins with a screwdriver. Any suggestions for me?
I did a quick search and saw a housing on ebay for sale.
Help!
fatcatdj this for the cylinder removal/install not the ignition switch
Is there any other tool than a chisel to remove those security bolts securing the ignition lock housing? A Torx or Torx security bit maybe?
I have used a center punch.
ok got a problem the starter good the battery good the dash lights up i put key n wont turn over but i put a screw driver to starter the motor turns over 😕
so once again i decide to pull it out, since it worked the first time, which i do but the tumbler wont turn still.......it's completely stuck whether its installed in the car or not.......anybody have any advice or answers
is it the same with most cars?
Thank you.
is this the same procedure on sl1?
is the ignition the same on a bmw 3 series
Couldn't you have just left the steering wheel and everything in place?
Hi I have the exact same problem you described with my 2000 SL1. Sometimes it starts others it doesnt. It has left my wife and I stranded. I called AAA and both times the tow guy arrived sat in the car turned the switch and started it right up. He was also able to remove the key when the car was running and we can drive it without the key. I suspect it is the ignition switch? Before I start replacing all those pricey parts...Rich what do you think? Thanks Bowsun
This is exactly what is happening with mine.
Can you tell me what the solution was for you?
Thanks!
hello ,,your videos have helped me out a lot over the years,,but I have ran into a problem changing the ignition cylinder on a 1997 Saturn sl2,,I inserted a small Allen wrench on the side to release the pin but I will not come out,,acc position,,accm I missing another step?there is no hole on top of the housing only the side.
I need this done. Anybody know how much a mechanic would charge for this job??
Will this work for a Buick Regal?
For those security bolts, can they be replaced with a regular bolt? And do you happen to know what size threads they are?
Those bolts are a security measure so you have to decide if you want to replace them with the same style or regular bolts.Off the top of my head i do not know the size.
They are M6 X 25mm. I replaced loose ones with regular
Me too. Worked just fine.
thnx.
No they very a lot.
is this ray ramano doing the video lol good video thoe just sounds like ray
You can order the 5.5 mm deep socket off I snap on
No it is not.
Thank you for the tip.
30 minutes on a Gen 1 very doable.
@heliraisers9 I am his long lost cousin everyone loves richpin.
