The cornerstone of any successful plan.
And there are some for whom their death is actually the intended last step.
Hehe
Disappointed this isn’t like a two second video saying “Because he WAS the senate!”
Yes but where’s the fun in that? Now we need to know WHY he was the senate.
1:26 So Palpatine pretty much pulled an Augustus? Letting the Senate remain in the aftermath of his rise to power to maintain the illusion that it still had a role and the population had a voice within the government.
Boss Isaac You should read the biography of Augustus by John Buchan. It is a great biography.
Sounds like America.
@@MarcussJay Yeah but unlike Rome, we are unbased and our authoritarians are all bicurious.
I mean the original star wars movies were a story about a tyrannical fascist regime and the heroes that can take it down. The prequels illustrated the dangers of liberalism being a mechanism for fascism to take hold.
This was mostly in the world building aspect of the star wars franchise, just another thread in the fabric.
Unlike Rome, though. The people disliked the empire. Majority of people in the Roma Empire actually preferred it. And, as Augustus said. "I came to Rome a city of bricks. I left it a city of marble". Both him and his step father were astounding leaders. They actually showed that having a one man leadership is better than a senate full of corrupted old farts. Clearly we haven't learned from history though.
Honestly, I think it was a stupid idea for Palpatine to remove the senate at all. It was nothing more than a figurehead rubber stamp, but it provided a tiny bit of legitimacy and let some relatively powerful leaders feel good about themselves while still serving the Emperor wholeheartedly.
Part of the point that was being made, was that dictators are power mad inevitably, that power goes to their head, they turn from cautious to reckless. The question is how much damage dictators do before they self destruction.
One thing that frustrates me is...once he's the emperor *why* does he need to do away the the Senate. Alot of his own goals don't make sense. You already hold the most power in the galaxy both politically and personally. At that point your just painting bigger and bigger targets on your back.
The senate was irrelevant by the time of A New Hope. Getting rid of them really did not make a difference from the perspective of the rebellion or the empire. The dumb thing was Tarkin blowing up Aldaran.
@@thecreatorofthedark Same reason billionaires keep trying to find ways to cut costs, lobby, monopolize, invest, and ultimately make more money even though they already have enough to live in pure opulence for a hundred lifetimes. Power and greed are not just a matter of fulfilling one's own self-interest, it transcends the self. It's an endless feedback loop of accumulation that knows no maximum, there's never enough. Even to the point of being self-defeating. Sidious epitomizes that singular aspect of our modern world while removing any of the humanity.
@victorconway444 I mean those billionairs also create more jobs and provide more services and cheaper goods to the population by doing that, compare computers originally and now, they are infinitely more cheaper and more advanced than they where before and more people have them because of the reduced cost to manufacture them.
I guess Palpatine forgot about the not dying part

I gotta say, this narrator was pretty shaky at first, but he's really smoothed out. He's a lot more natural and refined in how he speaks. He's also using different tones properly so it sounds like he's telling a story. It makes the video very pleasant to watch.
Just wanted to throw in a constructive comment. It's been cool seeing this guy adapt to speaking like a true narrator. :)
Thanks, I really appreciate the feedback :)
I totally agree with this, i really like the new narrator, he has indeed improved his skills.
This channel is a gem and it just keeps getting better!
I agree. He's improved highly since the start
Thanks a lot bud, if you have any ideas on how I can further improve, please hit me up. I'm always looking to improve my skills. ~The New Guy

Wooooaahaaaaaaaa
Pretty stupid question. He obviously wasn’t going to commit suicide after defeating the Jedi.
Palpatine may be evil but you can’t deny how successful he was. He accomplished many things that no individual or Sith Lord in the galaxy has before: He shifted an entire government to a new one (Republic to Empire) he reigned as it’s supreme leader for the remainder of his life. And he eradicated nearly the entire Jedi Order (something all sith have dreamed of but never managed to accomplish)
Because he evolved, unlike the Jedi and the Sith from the past

Why would he not keep himself around?
The answer is obvious, he's gotta keep himself around
I'm wondering how was the Senate organized, Were they all elected or were some appointed by the planets they represented and what powers did they have? Also were their any checks on the Senate other than the "Courts".
Marylandbrony The Senate was elected by their constituents. The “courts” were never really addressed after the phantom menace.
And what would happen if a planet was destroyed, but its senator was still alive?

luck myst3r only if he dies in the most painful way possible!!!
luck myst3r he deserves his own trilogy.
Yes, an alternative Star Wars timeline trilogy where George Lucas wasn't an idiot that listened to the stupid fans and stuck to the original plan for Jar Jar. That'd be awesome. Jar Jar ending up a Sith would have been the ultimate twist. Imagine that, a character most wrote off as pointless and annoying bumbling idiot and that was hated and viewed as a failed attempt at adding a bit of comedy turns out to be one of the keys to it all and a smart sith Lord. No one would have seen it coming. Then the fans went and fucked it up.
No
What exactly was the original plan for jar jar? If i may ask
"Fear will keep the systems in line, fear of this battlestation."
-Grand Moff Tarkin, Star Wars Episode IV "A New Hope"
"You know as well as I do that fear exists for one purpose: to be conquered."
"She tricked me."
"Did she, or was a part of you actually hoping to be defeated? Isn't that why you allowed Captain Janeway to come here? Because you sensed that she had the power to subdue you?"
"...No, she lied. It was very Un-Starfleet of her."
"Starfleet Captains don't easily succumb to fear."
"...What will become of us- ...of me?"
"Like all fear, you eventually... vanish..."
"...I'm afraid."
"I know..."
"...Drat."

I would like to know what happened to the senators when they were removed and what their reaction was after their leader who they supported for years removed them.
Killeric Longstar I know that Jar Jar ended up as a street clown, and also went to parties and entertained kids.
He was alive long after ROTJ, I wouldn't be suprised if he was alive during TFA. It is sad to see a Galactic Senator become a street clown, though, even if he is Jar Jar.

There is not one single person to be blamed. Most of the senators were corrupt. The Republic almost unable to deal with several threats. Democracy was rotting.

The Galactic Imperial senate was probably like the real world Senate it is based on, the Roman Imperial Senate.
They held on after the Fall of the Republic, but just barely, and yet they still managed to kill and even appoint many an Emperor.
In Star Wars, the raising of Senator Mon Mothma is similar to this, only, like appointed reluctant leaders in the real world (Marcus Aeralius, George Washington and Charles De Gaulle) she had no interest in being an autocrat, and so shared her power.
As JRR Tolkien said ‘The most improper job of any man, even saints (who at any rate were at least unwilling to take it on), is bossing other men. Not one in a million is fit for it, and least of all those who seek the opportunity’
I AM THE SENATE
This is why I love the empire more than the first order palpatine was a genius in and out i also feel that the imperial military is better than the first order military.
There’s a reason the original empire were stronger than the first order, the first order is basically disney’s version of the imperial remnants from the old cannon pre disney

I wonder if after he built the first Death Star, was he planning to build a fleet of Death Stars or just one more? (or two if you count Starkiller Base)
dragonweyr44
Considering the amount of resources needed, actually aauiring the material to build the body of a *DEATH STAR* was the relatively easy part...but acquiring the *special components* needed for the planet destroying super laser would be the very difficult task. So the empire could've built dozens of them but you have to remember the weapon is a *major deterrent* not something meant to be used liberally, its a *weapon of fear* first and foremost.
This is so interesting. In between movies is just seems like Sidius instantly gained complete control, so this makes so much more sense! Awesome video!!
In anime its called a timeskip lol
Well, let's be real. The Senate was filled with figure heads with the authority power of a hall monitor during the imperial reign. They basically had none to speak of. But the people still look to them. But like how it ended for them, brings more irony then merit. many provided thunderous applause to the new Empire, but soon found only sorrow and suffering. More cheer in the lower level of Corascant then the surface.
In a new hope, tarkin says the "regional governors will keep the planets in line", so... what happened? It sounds like Palpatine made each region more autonomous.
How’s the galactic senate going? Pretty good, it DOESNT seem.
When Palpatine dismantled the senate, he technically dismantled himself, because he is he senate
2 senates !
Perfect! That’s one way of how modern dictators come to power in the real world: politics, instead of launching a military coup, or a revolution. Modern day examples that i could think of: Venezuela (maduro), Bolivia (evo morales), Russia (putin), Belarus (lukashenko), Nicaragua (daniel ortega), Turkey (erdogan) and so on...
It’s tricky, because you need to shape the institutions and the military to concentrate power in your hands, but once it’s done, you propose a new constitution, solidifying power in your figure, and passes it. Now, you’re a dictator :D
The Lore Master can you make video about Master Yadlle who has made appearance in the phantom menace?

I don’t get why people hate on the Empire lol, it’s literally America except there isn’t a “Sidious” behind everything.
The U.S. government is a system of checks and balances. A "Palpatine-like" scenario could not happen. The president holds most of the powers in the government, but even that is relative. As soon as a President tried to increase his powers, Congress would immediately stop it, as soon as Congress tried to force the military to do something, the President could stop it, and in vice versa. Picture the U.S. government as sort of like "rock, paper, scissors".
Larry-three That’s exactly what I just said. There isn’t a person that controls everything.
How is the U.S. like the Empire? The U.S. is not fascist, Americans hold a strong anti-Imperial attitude, our government is not a monarchy. If anything, the United States never shuts up about freedom and democracy. Not that I am complaining, ha.
Where were Palpatine red guards when he died??? seeing how they were soooo loyal they couldn't even be at his side to protect him?

"All Palpatine had to do was build a new Death Star and not die..."
*cue Always Sunny in Philadelphia theme*
Palpatine Dies and the New Death Star Blows up.
So if Palpatine is the senate, then when he disbanded it he disbanded himself which means he wasn't empeor, or he died then because senate died aswel which means empeor we see in legends is imposter.
"We know how the rest went out"
Yup both 2nd death star and it's ruler sidious plus it's hater vader were destroyed. And anakin skywalker was redeemed with luke being a grandmaster. Happy end....

Because he loves democracy
Looking back, mountain dew missed out on a shit load of marketing.
