The thing about Palpatine is he didn't crave power, he just craved to remove those who had power above him, once the Senate and the Jedi were removed, he was freed from this desire and thats when he started sitting and watching and not directly ruling.
I feel like Palpatines intentions were less, typically sith oriented like than his means to get to his goal. In general the rule of 2 sith were far less brutish and seemed to have actual goals for the Galaxy.
Kind of relatable tbh. Only thing is, in a rightly ordered world there is nothing wrong with worthy people having more power than you. Palpatine probably didn’t think the world was rightly ordered; also he was an unfathomable narcissist, so he hated the idea of anyone having a position above him even if they deserved it.

You can even see it in the movies themselves. Palpatine in the prequel trilogy is very active, always plotting and planning, until the decisive moment when he takes power. And in the OT he is either away from the action or chilling in his chair. He truly was the most dangerous, when he had nothing.
If he doesn't kill you for fun or because he's pissed at you, that statement is factually true. He has great taste to say the least and his statements put hallmark to shame.

so if I lived in the galactic empire while Palpatine was at his height, say a year or two before the battle of Yavin, could I have purchased and read some of his work? The idea of Palpatine as a writer is quite fascinating and honestly I would have loved the chance to get a rare glimpse into his mind through his books. Also just as a historian he's pretty impressive. he seems to have been the scholarly sort and I suspect if one could sit down and converse with him without being fried by force lightning it would be an interesting conversation.
As long as you weren't a direct threat to overthrow him, I don't see why he wouldn't. Especially if you were knowledgeable on the subject. However, in order to be deeply knowledgeable, you have to be learned and experienced in the matter, meaning you most likely would be a threat. Can you just imagine old Sheev getting bored of sitting in his throne room, so he decided to fly down to his lakefront castle on Naboo and spend his time zipping through the forests on his speeder bike?
You can even see it in the movies themselves. Palpatine in the prequel trilogy is very active, always plotting and planning, until the decisive moment when he takes power. And in the OT he is either away from the action or chilling in his chair. He truly was the most dangerous, when he had nothing.

so if I lived in the galactic empire while Palpatine was at his height, say a year or two before the battle of Yavin, could I have purchased and read some of his work? The idea of Palpatine as a writer is quite fascinating and honestly I would have loved the chance to get a rare glimpse into his mind through his books. Also just as a historian he's pretty impressive. he seems to have been the scholarly sort and I suspect if one could sit down and converse with him without being fried by force lightning it would be an interesting conversation.

As long as you weren't a direct threat to overthrow him, I don't see why he wouldn't. Especially if you were knowledgeable on the subject. However, in order to be deeply knowledgeable, you have to be learned and experienced in the matter, meaning you most likely would be a threat.

Even with him being the evil Sith Lord, I can't help but smile a bit when I hear he just wants to live out his life in the moment and that ultimate and unopposed power starts to bore him fast.
