the source engine tricks your brain that someone is watching you and humans arent scared of being alone, they are scared of thinking they are alone but they are actually not

when i was 9 i installed a mod without knowing. it was that 1 gm construct beta map thats ''huanted'' and i didnt play on it. i was through ragdoll of a big building the one with the white room directly under it. i went down with them and purposely glitched a male_09 into the wall, i looked away and looked towards the lake, next to the hill, a darkened kliener was staring ,standing. i nonclipped to it freaking out , and it walked off into the lake slowly vanishing infront of me, then poof it was gone. I immediatly quit the game and since i was 9 started cring!!! i found out just last month, 4-5 years later that it was that gm construct beta map cus it has scripted spooky stuff in it and some of the anomalies in that map can go to other maps. so thats what happened to me. i even quit the game for 2 weeks cus i got that scared
G-mod is the reason i ever discovered tf2 and valve. Truly a masterpiece
I discovered tf2 bcause of sfm and my brother playing it long ago. The i've discovered half life 2 and portal because of my older brother playing it. Now i pay those masterpieces

I think what also makes gmod scary is the random screamers on maps. like the goatse one or the take your meds that happened few days ago. Makes you lil paranoid on what you download and stuff.

I think a big reason gmod is so uncanny when you are alone on any map is the lack of any interaction of the game with you. There is no music, no "Hey, do this!" or "hey look at this" it is just you and the map, that`s it

I used to love watching people play Gmod! And I always wanted to play it myself back then. Nowadays, though I'd rather get called slurs in TF2 than explore the vast and unsettling emptiness of Gmod.

The thing that makes Gmod scary for me is a very weird feeling of finding out something that I should not find. Like, I hate going out of bounds in game because since I was a kid I remember being scared that I would find some kind of monster or maybe something weird or scary would happen. And with custom maps that exists on gmod this fear just increases because I can feel that someone would put some weird thing out of bound just to scare someone that is too curious for their own good.
this is why i love the lambda/zeta npcs , they make me feel like im with real people instead of alone
I feel no fear playing singleplayer GMod simply because I’ve built up a tolerance to it from not having anyone to play with. Barely any of my friends even have a computer, and none of them have GMod, and I don’t like going to public servers, so I simply play on singleplayer
Intro reminds me of burning through space one of my favorite sfm animations of all time.
Everytime i play gmod singleplayer to randomly kill npcs with weapon addons, i can't help but feel like something is just so off about the maps, the only thing you hear is birds chirping in gm_construct and police sirens in gm_bigcity, of course it becomes less scary whenever i play with friends or with random people on multiplayer servers, there is always that feeling in gmod that someone or something is watching you, yet you see nothing.
When I wasn’t playing with my friends I would spawn citizens to feel more comfortable.

flat grass is ok since it’s so open and like the only blind spot is under the thingy so yeah

I'm honestly not really scared playing alone much anymore, but I do get kinda freaked out when I jump into a big body of water on some maps, mainly bc I got ptsd from fighting the ichthyosaur enemy in half life and the Black Mesa fan game 😳

For me Garry's Mod is an escape away from reality. the quietness of each singleplayer map soothes me. I prefer to be alone, or with one other person, which is why I love this game.

Why is this even a trending thing with garry's mod anyway? Why do people find so much joy in saying this physics-based sandbox is somehow scary on its own?
Dude I literally just boot up gmod to pose ragdolls in goofy ways there ain't a thing scary about it until you start slapping scary addons into it.

gorilla tag is VERY scary when your alone the sound of no players and no sight is scary for a pixel gorilla game , it feels...unsettling like something is watching you...
I can handle being alone for a while. Heck, I've gone two weeks being alone in my house and I was okay with it. The most I'd be scared about was whether I remembered to lock the door at night. However, games seem to be different. I've never played Garry's Mod or any game where you are just by yourself without ANY NPCs so I technically wouldn't know this paranoia and unsettledness. However, I do know what it feels like to be alone for too long. It gets weird and downright creepy. Before I became okay with being alone at home for long periods of time, just being alone for two days at home would freak me out. The home is where people always are. It shouldn't be so quiet unless you KNOW you're living alone. It also doesn't help when you used to live in a neighborhood with possible crackhead neighbors. So, yeah. Being alone, whether at home or in a game, it's not fun.

I also have monophobia and really the only way I play gmod is playing on either hyper realistic maps or flatgrass and I have a video playing on my second monitor. I feel the same way how you did about having no friends to play pc games with. im in highschool and pretty much all my friends only play on consoles so it can get pretty stale

Human brains are hard-wired to seek out context, it’s a survival instinct. Gmod already features a lot of assets from other games removed from their original context. Take away whatever Gmod-specific context you’d otherwise have - I’m on this map to play TTT or Prop Hunt, for instance - and your brain starts to flip out just a little, like trying to solve a jigsaw puzzle with three missing pieces.
If you find that scary play tear down basically a pixel version of gmod

Gmod Single Player is my go to whenever i wanna have some good ol fun. though, i usually play with friends. i find nothing about Single Player to be scary xd. idk how anyone finds it scary if theres no threat.

Who can fix this I keep hearing cracking sounds in gm construct and weird walking sounds but when I look there’s no one I spawned gman and walked away because I was playing with the modern Warfare guns and when I look back he is not there who can fix this?
